Dear all:

This January leading to Easter is time to go back to school. It has been much on my heart of late to preach about the matter of prayer. We have begun the Covenant Prayer Summit which meets each month through May. But I would like to do teaching and preaching on the subject of prayer in order to deepen the prayer life of the congregation I love. I am enjoying immensely just reading and studying some of the great authors on prayer.

But of course the greatest pray-er of all time was our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The disciples of old observed his prayer life, they watched the intensity of His praying, they watched how God answered His prayer and they wanted what Christ had. It is why they asked Him “Lord, teach us to pray...” And then Jesus not only taught them The Lord’s Prayer, but showed them through His life, His trials, His temptations and the person of prayer they observed, how to pray.

That is why I call this series leading through Lent and Easter – CHRIST IN THE SCHOOL OF PRAYER. We are going to school in order to deepen our prayer life. Our teacher is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. And in the process we will meet Him in prayer, we will have an encounter with the Holy, and we will watch in excitement what the Lord can and will do in our lives.

Let’s go back to school. Let’s meet Christ in the School of Prayer.

Praying for you!

Faithfully, Dr. Stu Broberg

UPDATE ON THE DOVE TREE AND OTHER HOLIDAY BLESSINGS

The response to our “Dove Tree” in the Commons this year was exceptional! The beautiful Doves (lovingly prepared by Peg Caesber) were placed on the tree on a Friday afternoon and by the following Monday morning they had all “flown” into the hands of members of our congregation who wanted to bring some Christmas Joy to others! Most of those Doves had the names of women in recovery at the Turning Point here in Washington. Several of the Doves had the names of children whose home had burned in a fire and would

have little else for Christmas. When the Doves returned, a few days before Christmas, they brought with them evidence of the love and generosity of The Church of the Covenant family of faith! Beautifully wrapped and bagged gifts of all shapes and sizes were delivered a few days before Christmas and I thought I would share with you some excerpts from the thank you notes we received from the women at Turning Point. #1 “Thank you for your dedication and willingness to support Turning Point halfway house. A lot of our women’s wishes were fulfilled with just an act of kindness. Your warm willingness helped our women’s spirits. Many couldn’t see their families this holiday…smiles were surrounding our group room when opening these gifts. Thank you for understanding our process and lifting our spirits on Christmas. Many of us have forgotten what the Christmas Spirit is about, but gifts from the heart helped many eyes open to the true meaning. Thank you, Felicia A.” #2 “Dear Church of the Covenant, I would like to thank you, very much, for my gift. I appreciated everything and I am very grateful that there are still good people in this world today like all of you. I pray that you all had a Blessed Christmas as well, and once again I thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything. Sometimes, it’s just the little thing’s in life that mean the most to people in a big way. I believe that God does work through people and those people are you. I have a long journey ahead of me but, on this journey, this is one of the moments I am taking with me always. God is good all the time. I am very blessed to know that God has angels who work on earth for Him. God bless and thank you, so much. Signed, Lana T.” #3 “I just wanted to thank you for the gifts that I received from you. They truly meant a lot to me. The jacket, hat, gloves and scarf will keep me warm through this winter. I didn’t have any of those things. I am truly blessed with everything that I got. I appreciate everyone who got me my things. You made my Christmas and New Year. Thank you, Danielle C.” #4 “I want to thank you for your kindness and generosity. And, also, for taking your time to give us a present under the tree. People like you give us hope through hard times. I appreciate the great gifts. I have no family or support system, so your gifts mean so much. Keep doing good deeds, as God will reward you in a priceless way. You are special people for caring about us here. Lots of love, Hollie” More thank you notes received are in a basket on the Welcome Center.

In addition to the Dove Tree, because of your generosity in the Christmas season, we collected almost $2000 to help women and children through Domestic Violence Services and CASA and we are sending $2000 to Haiti to help the homeless and hungry suffering from severe draught there.

My heartfelt thanks to this church family ~ ever willing to do God’s work and always blessed to be a blessing! Debi Nicolella Church Administrator

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION INFORMATION

Preschool Registration Preschool registration for 2016/2017 is upon us. Registration for church members will take place on February 1st. Please call for a registration packet. On February 2nd, the community at large will have the opportunity to register their children. Registra-tion times are from 9:00 to 1:00 in the preschool area. Even if you don’t have any children this age—Please continue to help spread the word about our church preschool! It is the place to be! Any questions please call Miss Camille here at the church 724-222-0190 ext.121 or at home 724-225-2947.

Our Church Preschool Update! Now that the holidays are behind us, the children would like to pass along some of the things they were involved in the past month. The children and their families contributed to Toys for Tots. We had such a successful drive for the children. We are hoping they enjoyed their surprise Christmas gifts and the thought that someone was thinking about them. Thanks to all Preschool parents for their thoughtfulness. This month we will continue to talk about how the wise men followed the star to Bethlehem, learn more bible stories, letters and colors, and so much more. As always, please stop down during the day just for a few moments to see what the children are doing or stop to read them a special story.

Now to look forward to February—The Transition classes, which are the 5 year olds, the big kids of our preschool, will make a visit to Evergreen Assisted Living to spread some of their love to the folks there for Valentine’s Day. The children will ring bells for the residents and sing a special song “Oh Won’t You Be My Valentine” and other tunes to brighten their day and even a little dance. What a wonderful time they will have! The residents will truly enjoy the entertain-ment that the kids provide and the kids will be extremely proud that they make other people smile! It’s wonderful that the kids are learning the value of doing for others, even at this young age. Thanks to all the parents who provide transportation and to Miss Linda and Miss Stacey to take this time from the classroom and help spread some greatly needed loving cheer to all. Early Eye Health Check-up---we are all about it! The Washington Green County Blind Association makes it possible for all of our preschoolers to have a free vision screening. Nurse Hazel has been visiting our school yearly and we are fortunate to have her with us again for this important checkup. The kids absolutely love her, plus the cool stickers that she gives to each child after the vision screening. So yes, we are very busy learning, visiting and having visitors at our Preschool---won’t you be one of our Visitors, too? Come on down for a visit—we like to give out smiles and hugs and maybe a sticker or two!

Sunday School Extravaganza, Sunday, January 31st 11am

- We’ll meet together as a group in the Covenant Kids Room. We’ll have games, snack, and watch a video and spend some time with friends.

Ash Wednesday February 10th

A Journey of Prayer- 5:30-8pm.

Join us for a reflective evening as we begin the season of Lent. This Journey is suited for fami-lies and people of all ages. From 5:30 to 7pm

there will be various places to journey throughout the Covenant Center to pray, reflect, and make something meaningful to enhance your prayer life. There will also be a light Lenten meal available during that time with various soups and bread to share. Beginning at 7pm our prayer journey concludes with our Ash Wednesday service in the

sanctuary. Our special guest, Dr. Andrew Purves, will be preaching and we will also have communion. We’ll con-clude by nailing our sins to the wooden cross. It will be a powerful evening you won’t want to miss as we prepare our hearts for Lent.

Tuesday Night Speaker series returns,

with Dr. Jim Platt, February 16th at 7pm.

The topic will be “The 40 days between Jesus’ Resurrec-tion and Ascension”. With Lent beginning February 10th isn’t it a good time to focus on the life of Jesus? We tend to study the days leading up to the crucifixion, but what about Jesus’ time here on earth after his resurrection? Dr. Platt will give amazing depth and insight into this topic. Mark your calendars to attend this 6 week series! 40 Days - Finishing Strong ~ Dr. Jim Platt

“He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by

many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and

speaking about the kingdom of God.” Acts 1:3, ESV

After his resurrection, Jesus spent forty days back on this earth, impacting many lives for the Kingdom. He was on a mission. A mission to demonstrate that death had been thwarted and that the Kingdom of God was victorious. There are some vitally important stories recorded about these forty days…stories that have the power to transform our lives. Join us as we investigate the example Jesus set for us and the powerful teachings He shared as He strove, during this last 40 days, to finish strong!

Pack the Pickup Success!

On Saturday, December 12 our youth, along with youth from three other churches in the area, rallied for our fourth annual Pack the Pickup food drive. We manned five grocery stores with trucks loaned from Washington Toyota and All Ways Moving and collected 4811 pounds of food....nearly two and a half tons! We collected the food into one of the All Ways Moving trucks and took it to the Greater Washington County Food Bank. The food bank supplies 45 distribution sites and seven agencies that help to meet the needs of about 25,000 people in Washington County who experience food shortages . Pack the Pickup was their largest single day drive of 2015. Many thanks to all of you that contributed to this effort.

Coming Youth Events

Here are some special events in the world of youth at The Church of the Covenant through February (in addition to our regular Sunday morning Breakfast Club):

• Sunday, January 24: Swim party at Artuso’s from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Come and be part of a great time at an indoor pool (well...it is January!) with food and a timely message.

• Saturday, February 13: Valentine's event at Washington Alliance Church, 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Several churches are joining together to give their students a really nice evening.

• Saturday, February 20: Confirmation Classes begin. The Class of 2016 will learn all about the meaning of church membership through class time, activi-ties, a mini-mission trip and more. They will then join the congregation on June 12.

Club 56 December RECAP

Club 56ers packed Operation Christmas Child boxes and delivered Christmas cards. On December 20th a group of Club 56ers and some parents went on visits to Southmont, Southminster, Belmead and a few other stops. They brought cards and cheer to over 15 folks. Earlier in December, they packed the final OCC boxes to send to children every-where. We are proud of the compassion these kids show for their church friends and for others near and far.

Upcoming Club 56 meetings

January 24th 4:30 – 6 pm.- Swimming at Artuso’s. Bring your swim suit and towel. Contact Don or Stacy for more information or directions.

February 7th- 4:30 -6pm.- Games and God talk . Come to the church for games and God Talk! We’ll explore the topic of talking to God, otherwise known as prayer. Do you just give a list to God of your wants or do you engage in a real conversation with him.

Spiritual Renewal Weekend...February 26-27

The historic role that the church and the Christian faith have played in our nation's past is little known, but it is vital....vital even to our continued survival. However, it is not enough to merely know that history. We must also understand that the church in America is not as influential as it once was. Why is that the case? The results of that waning influence have been devastating, but do we need to settle for a lesser role in the life of our nation? The church must reengage in all areas of American life. That will happen when each follower of Christ and each church cries out to God, "Here am I, Send me!" When every believer discovers and carries out their God-given assignment, our nation will have a different story. Will you be part of that story? The OAR Committee of The Church of the Covenant is sponsoring Winning America's presentation for its Spiritual Renewal Weekend. It will be presented by Don Nixon on Friday, February 26 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm

and on Saturday, February 27 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm. Lunch will be provided at about 11:00 am. An offering will be received to help cover costs. Please register by Monday, February 22 so that we can make sure we have the notebooks and materials needed. Register any one of three ways:

• on the website at www.winningamerica.org (Click on Upcoming Events)

• by email: [email protected]

• By phone: 412-480-5895 (Don Nixon's cell)

We look forward to seeing you there and trust that our Creator speaks to you in a powerful way!

War Room!

It sounds like a secret bunker under the White House. Actually, it's anyplace where God's people go to him in prayer. We are currently doing that with The Covenant Prayer Summit. There is also a movie that depicts this kind of effort in a very fresh and alive way.

We will be showing “War Room” in the Covenant

Center on Sunday evening, January 31 at 6:00

pm. This film could revolutionize the way you look at prayer. Watch how ordinary people seek God to transform a family.....and transform themselves as well! Pleases join us and help us to change lives for-ever as we initiate a war room in our church.

Given in Memory of Lolly Carnahan by Margaret and Robert

Mateer. (3 books)

Thirty Lessons for Loving: Advice from the Wisest Ameri-cans on Love, Relationships and Marriage by Karl Pillemer, PhD. This book is based on the results of a very detailed sur-vey of people who have been married for a long time. The author asked for advice on the big questions as well as the small. The book is filled with personal stories that are often moving, sometimes funny and always filled with great advice for anyone at any stage of a relationship. Soul Keeping: Caring for the Most Important Part of You by John Ortberg. The author focuses on what some consider to be the most overlooked, underrated, and least-understood part of your being. A well-cared-for soul holds our connection to eternity and can help us see past the concerns of the present. It has access to the kind of peace, gratitude and blessing that comes only from God. All the Places to Go…How Will You Know?: God Has Placed Before You an Open Door. What Will You Do? By John Ortberg. Ortberg states that our lives are filled with open doors. “Open door” is defined as an opportunity pro-vided by God to act with God and for God. We need to train ourselves to look for and respond to moments of divine inter-vention. It’s a certainty that God will place an open door be-fore us and the question becomes…what will you do? Given in Memory of Lolly Carnahan by Betty Braun. (2

The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows. In this novel, the main character, a young lady named Layla Beck, has her allowance cut off by her father, a U.S. Senator. The year is 1938 and he demands that she find a job on the Federal Writ-ers’ Project, a New Deal jobs program. She is assigned to cover the history of a remote mill town in WV. She rents a room in the home of a prominent local citizen and becomes very involved in the family’s complex world. (The author co-wrote a well known best seller The Guernsey Literary and

Potato Peel Pie Society which is about the invasion of the

English island of Guernsey by the Nazis in WWII. It is also

in the library.)

What to Do When You Don’t Know What to Do by Dr. David Jeremiah. This book focuses on the Book of James in the New Testament. The author offers stories and biblical insights about some of the following topics: what to do when you’re feeling pressured, when you don’t know what decision to make, when faith doesn’t seem to work and when you face difficult times. There are 12 chapters, each one focusing on a specific issue. There is also a Reader’s Guide. (The library has other books by this author.)

The following book was donated by Linda Pitner.

Heretic: Why Islam Needs A Reformation Now by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. The author, who was raised a Muslim, lived in Af-rica and Saudi Arabia before seeking asylum in the Nether-lands. She is now a fellow at Harvard University. In this book, she makes a case that a religious reformation is the only way to end the terrorisim, sectarian warfare, and repres-sion of women and minorities that each year claim thousands of lives throughout the Muslim world. She proposes five key amendments to Islamic doctrine that Muslims must make if they are to bring their religion out of the seventh century into the twenty-first. (Recommended by Linda. Another of the author’s books, Nomad, is also available in the library.)

The following books were donated by Barb and Tom Knight.

The Harry Bosch Novels 2 by Michael Connelly. This col-lection of novels includes three books about the LA detective, Harry Bosch. The titles are The Last Coyote, Trunk Music and Angels Flight. Any one who enjoys crime stories and their solutions will like this writer. The library has two more of Connelly’s collections. (Recommended by Barb)

The Secret Place by Tana French. This is another story in the Dublin Murder Squad series. The case begins with the mur-der of a handsome, popular boy at a private school. Detective Stephen Moran is joined by a female partner to try to solve the case. The private world of teenage girls turns out to be more mysterious and dangerous than either of them realizes. (The library has the first three books of the series.)

The following gently used book was donated anonymously.

The Library Committee thanks the donor.

Jackdaws by Ken Follett. This novel takes place right before Dday. The main character is a woman named Felicity Clairet who is a senior agent in the ranks of the SOE (Special Opera-tions Executive) responsible for sabotage. She’s a British agent operating in northern France. One of the most impor-tant targets is the largest telephone exchange in Europe. The first attempt goes wrong and now a second attempt is being planned that will require an all woman team that has to be trained quickly.
