How It HappensBy Barbara Parker, 37th Ave.

I sat down with John Platt on lucky Friday the 13th of June, in part to apologize for not doing a better job of featuring his Mayfair contributions in the June news-letter. But as we talked, I was reminded that John and St. Clouds does much for the community. It made me realize that community thanks can’t go where they need to go if the community does not know about all that goes into any given event. Mayfair is the example.

John’s role in Mayfair goes back some 14 years to when St. Clouds opened in Madrona. Then and now he has provided tasty treats at Mayfair including the much-loved Imperial Mix-Up dish that has been a big seller over the years. All profits go to Mayfair--totalling over $600 from St. Clouds this year. John donates his own time to cook and sell at Mayfair and in recent years the Madrona Com-munity Council has provided volunteers to work alongside him. In this way John and the MCC partner to provide a May event everyone enjoys.

In addition to organizing the event—a task that Stacey Kryman has gracefully helmed in recent years—Madrona Community Council volunteers staff the event, helping John to sell his products or at the bake sale or cooking and selling hot dogs or helping little ones onto ponies. But, wait, there’s more. On any early Mayfair morning you can find MCC Board volunteers and many others at Madro-na Playfield bantering with one another as parts A, and B, and C are laid out for

Metro Updates on Anticipated CutsBy now you are well aware that the vote to raise car tab fees to fully fund Metro failed in the April election. That being the case, in recent months the County has been working through the difficult process of resolving what transit service cuts and restructuring to undertake due to budget shortfalls. In July the County Council passed an ordinance to make the Sept. 2014 cuts and to set the number of hours to be cut for the Feb. 2015 cuts. Metro was supposed to hold workshops to collaboratively explore alternatives with the community. Instead Metro called a meeting and listened to comments for the first hour of the meeting from selected representatives and then presented a sin-gle across-the-board alternative they said would not work rather than look at how to fine tune the necessary cuts to address the community concerns. Then Metro ended the meeting without time for adequate feedback or discussion.

Mary Gallwey, attending on behalf of Madrona Community Council, commented at the end of the meeting that “The real needs of the elderly and partially disabled are not being addressed by Metro. These people will be isolated from city life and they are the fastest growing segment of Seattle’s population.”

Metro’s package is due to King County Council on Sept. 2, so at that time we will know what Metro has determined to do. At the time of writing this article, we can only hope Metro decides by some miracle to resurrect some level of Route 8 service from Group Health to Mount Baker Station via MLK Jr. Way and to keep Route 27 alive, since it was abundantly clear coming out

of the meeting that Metro has no plans to change their propos-al about restructuring Routes 2 or 12, moving transit service from Seneca to Madison, and terminating it at First Avenue as the 12 does now. It will be essential for every community member to contact City and County elected officials as soon as possible, so they hear loud and clear that Routes 2 and 12 need to be bought back with any new funds. If Routes 8 and 27 are not saved in some fashion, these also will need strong advoca-cy. Let them know that voters need assurance that the transit dollars voters are asked to approve this Nov. will be used first to buy back our routes and, in particular, return high ridership routes, like the current No. 2 on Seneca, to their existing rout-ing and service levels.

Madrona Garage Sale Bucks TraditionThe Madrona Neighborhood Garage Sale 2014, led by MCC member Rob Ward, took place on June 28. Twenty five neigh-bors registered their garage sale events on the MCC website and were listed on the map. Contrary to past years when rain appeared on garage sale day, this year the sky was merely over-cast. Many thanks to Rob for his work and for the volunteers who put up signs, created and distributed the printed map, and otherwise helped make the garage sale a memorable event. Funds raised in the event support Madrona neighborhood activities, such as the Halloween Party, the Mayfair Block Party, and the Madrona News.

Letter to the EditorDear Madrona and Kismet Salon clients,

We want to thank you for ten fantastic years. Madrona has been such a welcoming and supportive neighborhood to open and grow our successful salon. We have watched your families grow up, weathered ups and downs, seen neighbors move in and out, and enjoyed the changes in Madrona personally and as a business. I signed my lease the day I went into labor with my second child and she took her first steps in my salon. I will always have the best memories of my time here. I spent quite a while thinking about my business and the great relationships I have created here, but now the time to change and improve my business has arrived. The opportunity to grow my salon and spa presented itself and we are very excited to take the next step. We are moving to 512 Broadway Ave. E. at the beginning of October, only 2.3 miles from our first home in Madrona. We will be able to offer more services and Aveda products at our new location. We will continue to offer the same friend-ly professional service you have come to expect from Kismet Salon and Spa. Because we cherish our current clients we will be offering five percent off services for life and will validate parking at one of the conveniently located parking lots near our new salon. Any questions? Stop by Kismet Salon on Spring St.: we will be in Madrona until September 27. Thank you for your support and good wishes.

Neighborhood News and NotesIn May Genesis House closed its facility at the corner of Cherry and 34th, but not after successfully relocating all of its clients. A Genesis House Board Member reported that Genesis House still exists as an organization; the Board has always had a com-mitted, mostly neighborhood, board that will continue to meet and work on future plans. The property was sold to a devel-oper of single-family homes, but information is not available regarding the developer’s immediate plans or timetable. The Board intends to use proceeds from the land sale to further the treatment of drug addiction.

Totara Children’s Boutique is now open at 1130 34th in the space previously occupied by Montagne. The store features clothing, gifts, wall decorations, and other items; summer hours are Wed-Sat from 11:00am-6:00pm and Sunday from noon to 5:00pm.

As of mid-August Pritty Boys Family Pizzeria had closed.

The Central District USPS facility moved in Aug. The good news is that the facility didn’t move out of the CD, but was relocated to the small shopping center facing 23rd and Union. The owner of that block intends to develop the block, so an-other USPS move is probable for the future; hard to say when. Rental mail boxes formerly at the 23rd and Union facility moved to a Broadway location.

If you are part of a social services group or provide activities for youth, the MLK Community Center gym and auditorium is available free of charge Mon.-Sat. from 8:00am to 5:00pm. After 5:00pm, there is a $35.00/ hour charge for each venue. Please call MLK Community Center, 257-5572 for more information.

In July real estate broker Hanna Petros sponsored a Green Planet event at Garfield Community Center that collected recyclable items including computers, appliances, and other household items. The proceeds benefit organizations that include Seattle Children’s Hospital. Ms. Petros has organized similar events in other neighborhoods to make the Puget Sound a healthy and de-sirable area. Contact her at [email protected] for additional information or to be informed of future recycling opportunities.

In June Windermere’s Eastlake real estate associates partnered with Rebuilding Together Seattle to make a home on 27th Ave.

safe and habitable for its aging owner, an Army veteran who has lived in the house for 55 years.

For two years Andrea Matus-McGee headed up our Mutt Match-up department, producing wonderful photographs of adorable dogs and their attractive owners. Andrea thinks it is time to pass this opportunity to another Madrona volunteer. The job entails monthly photos of three pets and their owners that then are forwarded to [email protected] together with first names of owners and the pet(s), and the name of their Madrona street. A monthly reminder is issued via email for newsletter deadlines that fall mostly in the first week of the month. Interested vol-unteers are welcome to contact [email protected]. Many thanks for your good work Andrea.

Neighborhood School News and ActivitiesCoyote Central Gears Up For Fall Term

After a full-house summer of well over a hundred courses, a thou-sand kids, and two public art projects, Coyote is gearing up for their October 18 start date for both their fall and holiday terms. Kids 10–14 years old will enroll in another round of high action courses with professionals in creative fields including fashion design, fine arts, culinary and shop arts, performance arts and media arts, animation and electronics—visit www.coyotecentral.org in September to catch them all.

Because of their options for scholarships and bartering or trading of services for tuition, Coyote courses are available to all kids 5th – 8th grade regardless of family budgets. Kids will enroll from over thirty different schools from throughout the city.

Two Coyote projects this summer brought public art to the Central Area and the International District. Summer 2014 Hit the Streets participants fabricated art panels for six tall columns now installed on S. Jackson St. on the site of Washington Middle School. Their panels represent themes that connect people to their community. Public artists Timothy Siciliano, Deborah Law-rence, Brent McDonald and Liza vonRosenstiel led the project.

Another team of current Coyote participants and alums brought the first public art to The Goodwill off S. Dearborn St. With public artists, Karen Stocker and Ann Fasano, they created mosa-ics for the planter/seatwall near the main entrance that welcomes shoppers and Goodwill employees.

On the second Tuesday of every month, Coyote hosts a popular

Cappy’s Boxing Gym launches Life Coaching Program

By Coach Ann Bailey, 22nd AveCappy’s Gym is celebrating our 15th year anniversary this Fall. Our recent successful Indiegogo Fundraising Campaign ensured that we have the funding we need to stay committed to the Central District even as the demographics and neighbor-hood change. Our new Life Coaching program is a big part of that commitment.

As a Boxing Gym, we offer challenging workouts that combine the authenticity and history of boxing with the plain fact that boxers must be in amazing shape to compete in the ring. That means boxing workouts are some of the most complete work-outs out there.

But we have found that people want more. People want more awareness of how they are communicating with others, they want more choices in dealing with conflict, they want richer and fuller lives. In other words, people want Life Coaching.

If you are more comfortable in a Gym than in a therapist’s office, this program is for you. A lot of other programs only address what’s in the head but they forget about the body. We believe that accessing the body is the key to making changes. Contact Cap Kotz for more information. [email protected] or visit our Life Coaching Page at www.cappyslifecoaching.com

Last spring, more than 100 sophomores and juniors applied to be Garfield LinkCrew leaders. All were recommended by their teachers, and after interviews a full complement was chosen to be student mentors for the incoming freshman class. Last spring and this summer, mentors have been preparing and training for the 2014-15 school year. Pairs of student leaders will be assigned small groups of ninth-grade students to welcome and help them learn the ropes, first at orientation on Aug. 27 and then, throughout the year with monthly meetings to discuss grades, social activities, and school events.

The vision is that--like other high schools across the nation--this program can help Garfield build bridges among groups and cultures, and give its new students a positive, inclusive transition into high school. Culture change takes time, but this is a big and exciting step. To learn more about LinkCrew at Garfield, please contact Sarah Antoncich, [email protected] or John Eickelberg, [email protected]

Madrona K-8Things are off to a great start at Madrona Pre K-8. The annual back to school barbeque, held at the end of August, officially kicked off the school year. Principal Mary McDaniel, teachers, and staff members were on hand to welcome all new and return-ing students and families. As always, it is proving to be another busy and fun year. The next event is Curriculum Night on Sep-tember 25 when families can come and see what their students

(continued on next page)

will be learning throughout the year. And the PTSA is working with school staff to plan events and activities that will help raise money for the school, expand students’ enrichment opportuni-ties, and continue to engage both the school and neighborhood communities. Anyone who is interested in learning more about Madrona PreK-8 or interested in becoming more involved can contact the PTSA at [email protected].

The 3rd Annual NAACP 5K Walk/Run will be held Sept. 20. This local event is both a fundraiser for underfunded schools in the Seattle area as well as a health and education fair. Please con-sider signing up to help increase opportunities for all students.

Free music tutoring for 4th and 5th graders also is coming to Madrona K-8 this fall via a partnership between the school and Seattle Music Partners which pairs Central Area elementary school students with tutors who range from high schoolers to professional musicians; free instruments also are loaned if need-ed. Students from Madrona K-8 often go on to attend Garfield High School, which has a nationally recognized music program, so music education at Madrona is geared toward preparing stu-dents for a potential continuation of music studies at Garfield.

Madrona K-8 and its new full-time music teacher Stephan Childers need your help to provide sufficient instruments and supplies to extend the program’s benefits to all students who want to participate. They have set up a fundraising page on Swo-pBoard (www.swopboard.com) which accepts cash donations and list items for sale with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward
