“The Rosette” Newsletter of the TNSOCR Winter, January 2019 Dear Sisters and Brothers, I hope each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas. Plus time to fellowship and enjoy food brought by many members in between. Four more graves stones were uncovered in a beautiful service in Huntersville Confederate Cemetery. Betty Aronson and I made the trip to Western Virginia for that event, and participated in the school day the day before also. Always wonderful there with Lee’s Lieutenants. Dear Sisters and Brothers, I hope each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas. We’ve been so busy in

Tennessee it’s hard to believe its winter! We’ve been part of so many Christmas parties and parades in all parts of our beautiful state it’s impossible to keep track of them all. For the first time in all the years I’ve been a member we were not needed as docents for Elm Springs. But thru all the fun and camaraderie we haven’t forgotten our purpose. There have still been many opportunities to share history and honor the soldiers and their dedication.

Alice Thompson Chapter #19 has re-chartered in Summertown with Rawdon-Spears SCV Camp #2113. Nellie Chomech and her staff are on fire for the Cause – I know we’ll be hearing good news from them very soon.

At least 7 chapters were represented in the annual event sponsored by Camp #33, “Sam

Davis Remembered”. It was a wonderful daylong event, speaker, and memorial service at Sam’s grave, ghost walk.

Several of our members along with a good number of SCV brothers honored those who fought and died in Franklin that awful day in Nov 1864. We made the 2 mile march as they did, their honor and sacrifice remembered.

We thank Kortney Brus for her service as historian for the state. She has stepped down from that position. With new baby Cooper, making 3 sons, and a full time job, she has a full plate and doesn’t any longer have the time necessary to devote to a state scrapbook. If any TNSOCR member would like to take over as State Historian please contact me.

Remember we are on a calendar year here in Tennessee for our dues/membership. 2019 dues are due. 2018 membership expired 30 Dec 2018, please be sure your chapter president has your dues and any updates to your info submitted this month.

Happy New Year ! May we work ever harder for the great heritage and history of Dixie!

Roses of Appalachia Chapter #26, Chattanooga

The holidays are for fellowship and family. That's what happens when Roses, Thorns, Rosebuds, and Young Rebels get together. We gathered together for a potluck Turkey fry. Three turkeys were fried. Amazing potluck dishes were served. Carson Camp graciously opened the museum for everyone to visit. An exceptional turnout and good time was had by all.

A Christmas Eve Memorial service was held at the Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery to honor our fallen ancestors. Not just for this cemetery, but for all of the Confederate heroes. A presentation was done by James Skipper. Other attendees spoke up for their ancestors as well and encourage all to continue the cause to save our heritage.

Maria Baker Lemmon Chapter #25, Covington

October was a busy month. Many of our OCR members participated in Civil War Days at Columbus

Belmont, including several of our OCR kids who also participated in educating other kids on school days on

Friday. On October 20, 22 of us took a trip to Shiloh, where our local Shiloh historian and VP, Sherl Rose

guided the tour through Shiloh. She had the kids march through the Hornets’ Nest and imagine what the

experience must have been like. We had a great day!

November 3, many of our OCR participated in Civil War Demonstrations at NBF Park at Eva Beach. Four

of our OCR kids: Gabriel Patrick, Ryan Adkison, Madalyn Boland, and Jesse Boland participated in the days

activities and helped the Park Rangers. All 4 were made Honorary Junior Rangers for their participation.

November 10, many of our members participated in a memorial service for Mr. Woody Sterling at Parker's

Crossroads. On November 11, Veteran's Day, we held a meeting at our new meeting place, thanks to Dunham

Masonic Lodge in Covington! We did a program (complete with poppies) for Veterans Day. After the program

and the meeting, we had fun making “old-fashioned” Christmas ornaments including fans, burlap angels,

wooden bead strands, and fabric trees. Many thanks to our newest member Betty Craig for her tireless efforts on

the popcorn strands! We listened to period Christmas music, munched on goodies, and got in the Christmas

Spirit. The ornaments made were used on our Christmas tree on our float in the Covington Christmas Parade.

Crystal Marcy, Ruthie Patrick, and I made keep sake ornaments for all the members to commemorate our first

Maria Baker Lemmon TNSOCR #25 Christmas together!

We worked for 2 weekends on a float that we did with our brothers from the Simonton-Wilcox SCV which

was very beautiful and a great success!!! On the float, we had a home scene with family at home including

grandkids, kids and “mama” reading a letter that was written to her by her son on the battlefield with an angel of

protection around the family. The other half of the float was the son writing the letter home to mama while the

troops gathered around the camp fire.....also with an angel of protection and giant cross. The Christmas Parade

was December 4. December was such a hectic month for all and we spent so much time on the float that we

voted to not have an official meeting in the month of December...... but we will be back at it with our Lee-

Jackson Banquet we are planning for January 19! Submitted by Claudia Chapman, Pres.

Mariam Beck Forrest #5, Gleason

On Oct 13, Jan Hensley with a heavy heart attended the funeral of one of the the most revered members of the SCV, Boots Nix. He and his son, Buddy, were caretakers of the Forrest Boyhood home for over 15 years. His soft spoken voice and Southern presence will be sorely missed.

Oct 5 -6, Debbie Erickson and Lou Shaw were with the 19th Alabama on Friday they held school days and Saturday was open to a large crowd of people.

Debbie and Lou set up again with the 19th at Paris Landing next weekend. The weather was not kind and they had to break camp early on Saturday to avoid putting up wet tents on Sunday. Ah the joys of camping! Margie Potts, Mona Henderson, Jim Weaver, and James Randall Price did a cannon demonstration at Chickasaw Park. During the weekend of Oct 20, various Indian tribes held a celebration at Henderson and the cannon was enjoyed by everyone Our chapter and the Maria Baker Lemmon #26 will host the 2019 state convention at Shiloh. Their chapter is the closest one to the convention but unfortunately only chartered last year in May so we are offering our assistance. We have enjoyed working with them and the convention will be a lot of fun. Maria Tabor-Braun, Charlotte Gray, Lou Shaw, and Jan Hensley met on Nov. 1 and we want to give all our sister chapters fair warning that there will be a new mascot in town for the next convention. We are entering a scrap book also which means the competition will be a nail-biter in April. On Nov. 12, Margie Potts, Deborah Teague, Jim Weaver, and James Price were at a Fall Festival at Shelby Forrest giving cannon demonstrations again. Everyone loves the smell and smoke of gun powder and the sound of a cannon. Submitted by Jan Hensley, President

Roses of the Cumberlands Chapter #1, Crossville

We had a great ending for 2018 for our chapter. My daughter, Joy, my husband and I attended the Kingston Street Fest the first Saturday in November. On November 10, some from our chapter were in the Crossville Veterans' Day Parade. On December 8th, the Hamby camp and our chapter had a float in the Crossville Christmas Parade. Then, to wrap up our year, the annual Christmas Banquet was held at Cumberland Mountain State Park restaurant. We had a great turnout and everyone enjoyed the evening. A certificate of appreciation for past service to our chapter and to the entire TNSOCR was presented to Ms. Ruby Pruett. Ms. Ruby just recently published a book also. It has been a busy year but we are looking forward to an even busier 2019 and want to wish everyone a Happy New Year from our chapter. Submitted by Carol Phillips, President

Sophie Reilly Hatton Chapter #24, Lebanon

Our winter months were full. October 5 Jason Carlton was at the Lotz House

demonstrating. He also appeared on TV. Terry Twigg went with some other OCR

members to Standing Stone on October 13. The same day we had

a work day at the Sam Davis home. The Meadows and the Woods

helped paint the small cottage, getting it ready to rent. October

14 we were invited to Granville to participate in a demonstration. We had a good

turnout and also saw many of our sisters. The Hoovers, Sarah Shriver, Martin, Tony,

Woods and Sarah Belongie. October 20 Kevin and Jordy helped raise a new flag in

Newport.

Terry spoke at several SCV camps and Kevin attended the

Hamby Camp. Several of us were in Paris Landing for their re-

enactment. On October 21 the Meadows met with several SCV members and other

OCR sisters to honor six soldiers at the Alexandria Cemetery. Their graves were

marked and honored in a ceremony. Hoovers and Woods set up and demonstrated in

the Candlelight Tours at Oakland Mansion. November 1 Tom Meadows spoke at the

Gainesboro SCV Camp and Dottie got selfies with some of her sister Roses. On November

10 several of our members participated in the Lebanon Veterans Day Parade with

Camp 723 and several of our OCR sisters. On November 11 Dottie went with Vonda to help

re-charter the Alice Thompson #19 Chapter and Dottie explained how she had discovered that

the namesakes for our chapters are related. November 14 was the second annual Mec/Cav OCR picnic and the

meadows attended. November 15th Janet and Anita joined the Cheairs SCV Camp

for Friends and Family Day. The same day Jordy and Kevin were marching in Johnson

City Veterans Day Parade. On November 17 Kevin marched with the Knoxville SCV

camp in their parade.

November 18 th the Memorial service at the Sam Davis Home was attended by many. We were able to place

roses with many of our Black Rose Sisters and Nancy received her pin. Dottie

and Nancy took soup and snacks and contributed to the meal that was

provided. It was a beautiful service with Jason Boshers speaking. November

25th we marched at Winstead Hill, Franklin.

December brought Christmas parties. Our OCR sisters decorated for the SCV

Camp Christmas dinner on December 6. Many of our members attended

including Terry, the Meadows, Woods, Frosts, Carltons, Robert Towson and

his grandson and we invited our recruit who joins us in January, Tamathy. On

the 8th the Woods hosted a party for the 19

th Alabama Civilians and several of

our members attended. We were able to present Sara Shriver with her certificate

since she was home from Hawaii for a while. On the 8th OCR thorns Kevin and Jordy attended the Rouse Road

Christmas Morristown parade with local SCV and UDC members. Kevin also attended the 2nd

Annual

Christmas Eve Service at the Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery with some MechCav brothers. Several

members attended Memorial Services at Confederate Circle in Murfreesboro on Sunday, December 30 and then

Wild Mountain Roses Chapter #11, Elizabethton

Here's hoping everyone had WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS holidays filled with family,

friends & many loved ones. For those of you missing loved one's anew this year,

prayers that you were still able to think of them with fond memories of times gone by!!!

Clara Ingram Craft is still in need of our prayers as she continues to have problems

with the ankle that was broken over a year ago. She recently had another hospital stay

with antibiotics & from what I understand, she had to have the screws & possible the

plates removed due to an allergic like rejection of those items. Sandra Kyte & Kay

Millsaps have both had some health issues & hospital stays also. Please keep all these

folks in your prayers for better health in 2019.

In Oct. our OCR chapter paid honor to 4 Confederate Soldiers buried in a family

cemetery here in Elizabethton. Only Cindy Pate & I were able to work out our

schedules to be able to do this dedication. This was a project our OCR started working

on in 2017 & it was finally completed. Cindy's husband Greg who is the Camp

Commander for the Lt. Robert J. Tipton, SCV Camp#2083, started the dedication by

prayer & then Mr. Bill Hicks, past Camp Commander of the same camp gave a brief

biography of each of the four men honored. The men we were honoring were: William

A. David Cook; William White Roberts; George W. Malone & Jeremiah Peeks. A

bouquet of red silk roses, baby's breath & a small Confederate Battle flag was placed @

each headstone along with a larger Confederate Battle flag.

Honoring 4 soldiers in the Colbaugh Cemetery In the program at Sam Davis Home

We have a new Rosebud, Savannah Peterson, whose application was approved in late

Nov. & her certificate will be presented to her by the Camp commander of her

grandfather's camp Carroll County Rough Riders #1952 either in Dec. or Jan. I hope

to share a photo of her receiving her certificate with our next newsletter page!

Savannah lives in Earlham, IA but they do not have an OCR presence there so she & her

Grandmother Colleen are members of our chapter.

I was privileged in Nov. to be able to attend the Sam Davis Memorial with many of our

OCR sister Roses. Yes, there is a funny story even there – Susan and I got locked in the

historic home! Tapping on windows until someone got a docent with key to let us out!!

I have also attended several SCV camp meetings of the Dillard-Judd Camp located in

Cookeville. 15 Submitted by Ann Shepard, Pres.

We also attended camp meetings with our sponsor SCV camp Dillard-Judd in Cookeville. Helped some on planning with SCV Highland Brigade Commander James Lovelace for the upcoming Brigade Lee-Jackson Banquet, this year to be held in Smithville, TN. SCV Commander In Chief Paul Gramling will be guest speaker. Location will hold up to 300. Come & support the Highland Brigade & TN Division on 26 January 2019, come early, 3:30-4 pm. Pot luck supper, opening ceremony starts at 5 p.m. Come in modern civilian clothes, in period dress/uniform. A bluegrass band will be there making music. Will need a color guard & riflemen. Even if not in opening ceremony come in period attire if you can. SCV needs all the support we can give them at this event, they need 200-300 show up if at all possible. 16 Submitted by Mike Williams
