Update from our Board of Trustees - Property As some of you will know, the Ministry of Education is providing Greendale School with a new classroom to accommodate our ever-expanding community. This is alongside our ongoing project to create better staff and administration facilities. It is hoped that we will have a new building in place for the start of the 2020 school year.

The new building is to be sited at the end of the present building beyond Tūrepo classroom, and our aim is to have extra rooms to accommodate Technology/ cooking facilities/library/teaching facilities alongside a classroom; and provide us with better facilities for Teacher/PTA/Board and other school meetings. We envisage this will allow us to have assemblies and hui in the school once again, as well.

Once this building is in place, our school can then breathe before starting on our plan for better admin and staffroom facilities, which we plan to complete during 2020. We also have plans to upgrade and improve the swimming pool building - an ongoing project. All of this is aimed at providing for the future of Greendale School and our community, and as such we hope we can call on your help and assistance in achieving our goals to create these facilities.

Welcome back to the final term for the year. A big thank to everyone who came to help in our annual compulsory whānau working bee. Our caretaker has very few hours allocated, hence our need to do this once a year. I understand everyone is busy (including me), and it’s the holidays, so I appreciate all of us coming together to help. Many jobs were done together and kai shared at the end. We still need our woodwork container undercoated - Ash and Katrina McPherson have offered to spray paint it this coming weekend.

This week we have held our annual Mataī class camp. We had three days at Wainui YMCA in the Banks Peninsula. A huge thanks to the parents who gave up three days to help us, as without your support fun trips like this cannot happen.

We begin to prepare for our Pets Day next Friday. Dads and Grandads, I hope you are beginning to plan how you could decorate a cake (your own homemade, or bought). This is a long standing tradition that is held at the end of Pets Day, to raise funds. Thank-you for your support. The Pets Day schedule has all info you need to know; for other questions, go to your class teacher or Deb in the office.

Early in the term we have Athletics (“Run, jump, throw”). The whole school will be preparing on Thursday afternoons in small groups with teachers and Jayde, and also during class time.

Last term, we had a very poor response to our Reading Together evening programme which we were hoping to run. Reading is such an important part of school and this will be an informative and interactive course. This is a compulsory programme that all Malvern schools are running, and at Greendale School we are asking all Tūrepo parents to come along, please. We are guessing that the four-week commitment has put you off so ... we will be condensing it to a 2 1/2 hour evening instead, with dinner included and a trip to the library. The date is Thursday 7 November, 5 30 - 8 pm. As part of the programme, children from Tūrepo are asked to come along too; when not required, Mrs Hamilton will look after them in the class next door.

We need your help!!! PTA fundraiser at Hororata Highland Games on Saturday 9 November. We have been given the opportunity to sell Scottish sausages from the BBQ at the event - if any parents can help for a few hours, please contact Rhyannon on 0210 660 410. PTA next meeting: on Monday 21 October, at 7pm at 151 Greendale Road. Everyone is welcome to come along.

We are starting to plan the vegetable garden, so we can put vegetables in the community pantry for all to enjoy. At our next meeting on Tuesday 29 October (2 30 - 4 00 pm), we will be planning for the term: to attach hens to the hen house, set up the woodwork container, and discuss a Greenwood Grove sign.

Wishing our October birthday children a Happy Birthday:

Musings from Mataī… Well, we have begun Term 4 as we mean to go on … chock-a-block PACKED FULL of ACTION and awesome LEARNing! We have had a FANTASTIC time away at Wainui YMCA Camp and are very proud of our wonderful LEARNers in Mataī developing their resilience and tolerance being away from home (for some, for the very first time), pushing through some tough challenges that needed a Growth Mindset, and encouraging each other in their groups. The wet weather didn’t dampen spirits at all, and it was a good reminder to just get on with what we have to do regardless of what is thrown our way (and be grateful for rain jackets!) The instructors at YMCA were fabulous, and did a great job of looking after us with a programme of challenge, fun, action, and team building. It was wonderful to hear the mixture of cheering, laughter, and encouragement, with times of quiet in the Enviro Studies activity, listening to the waves rolling in, raindrops and beautiful birdsong. Some highlights that have been shared have been the flying fox, the campfire, the swim in the sea (which we can both vouch for was FREEZING!) and the food!

We would like to extend our HUGEST THANKS to the parents for your fundraising contributions, yummy baking … and to our Camp Parents, a special thank you for giving up your time to join us on camp to help transport, encourage and support – we couldn’t have done it without you! We hope you have caught up on some sleep. Preparations are now

underway for Pets Day next Friday. W e will also be putting the finishing touches to our model solar system now hanging up in our classroom – pop in and have a look when you can. We are also completing our Calendar art based on the solar system.

WAINUI YMCA CAMP 2019

from Mrs Cridge [email protected]

Welcome back to Term 4! I have sent everyone a brief newsletter outlining what we're doing this term. If you haven't received it, please email me and I'll send you a copy.

It's great to see most of the children with their hats on, even though the weather has not been co-operating.

A couple of things I forgot to mention in my recent class newsletter: Library for Tūrepo will be on Wednesday afternoons. So please bring books back that day or earlier if you've finished with them. I do have a library box that they can go in.

I hope to be using Seesaw a lot more this term. If you have no idea what I'm referring to, let me know. It is an online portfolio where children keep a record of their learning. I started it at the beginning of the year and a couple of things went on during my time away but the newbies will need a parental consent form which I will send home next week. Photos of your child's learning can be stored here and only you can see it if it's on your child's journal.

I also have new AWS books to give to students who have finished their first book; I will hand these out next week.

The children will be doing lots of physical activity every day so please make sure they have good running shoes every day unless it's raining, as they will be running and jumping a lot.

Keep up the reading. It's great to see parents’ signatures so I know the children have read their book for that night.

I hope you've survived the first week back and routines have settled in again. The children have had fun making playdough and the animal crafts this week, all ready for Pets Day next week.

Many thanks. We really enjoyed our visit from the Edge Connector last term

Whānau Night on Wednesday 13 November: Please note this evening

on your calendar. This is a new initiative where we can all share in a casual evening together. The children will perform shorts plays, we will run a sausage sizzle, optional children v adults soccer, unihoc and tug-of-war, and hopefully the pool will be open for swimming. Following this evening, it’s a long weekend (Teacher-only day Malvern-wide on Thursday, and Christchurch Anniversary Day on Friday).

Whole School Fitness Programme - Term 4: This term

we are all doing a “Run around Selwyn”. Each morning we all head outside at 8 50 am, with a different activity each day. After the fitness, we colour two dots on our class maps and aim to get all around Selwyn, beginning in Lincoln.

Prize-giving Awards 2018 cups return: We are preparing for the end of year Prize-giving. If your child was

awarded a cup last year, pleae return it to the school office, so that we can arrange this year’s engraving. If you are in touch with any past pupils, please let them know. Many thanks.

Second-hand uniform items: We will gratefully receive any uniform items

that your family no longer requires; these are passed on to other families for a monetary donation to the school.

School photographs: The sample photographs and order forms have been

distributed. By this Wednesday, 23 October, please:

make payment online to the photographer

Return completed order forms to the school Office. Do not remove the sample photo from the envelope.

Many thanks to Alissa Cleaver, who collected the junior picnic tables, and

delivered them to school . Tūrepo students love their size-specific furniture!

Medical conditions/Allergies, etc: For camp, some families advised us of

students’ medical conditions that we did not have noted on our student management system. If your child has any conditions, please advise Deb in the Office - what is the condition, and if it were to occur at school, what do you advise us to do? This information will then be available to all staff at all times.

The new term dawned very quietly, as Mataī class were away on camp. The opportunity to take on all of the roles of the seniors was relished and the PE Shed was well looked after, the rubbish and milk cartons were dealt with very efficiently, and just about everyone got the chance to ring the bell. I have included some photos of the last day of term's movie afternoon, where our Make and Do focus was making something to sit in to watch the movie. This was very successful and much enjoyed. Our focus for the first couple of weeks this term is Pets Day. We have just about completed our Recycled Animals. I have asked the children to keep the size down so that you can all enjoy the fruits (boxes) of their labours after Pets Day. I am currently packing my PJs so I can enjoy a sleepover at school with the Year 3s and some wonderful parent helpers. There will be a few stories to publish in the next newsletter from this, I am sure!

On the last day of Term 3, Horopito made cars for the SpaceDogs “drive-in” movie, and watched the movie with Tūrepo. Mātai painted planets and watched Muppets in Space.
