On Thursday, April 2nd Victor Harbor hosted their annual Sports Day which
was a great success. The day kicked off with a school warm up led by Mrs
Harris and the team captains which limbered everyone up for a day full of ac-
tivities. The kids were involved in a number of fun games and events through-
out the day working as both an individual and in a team environment. The day
finished with the highly anticipated relays as well as a teacher relay.
Well done to all students who were involved. The level of participation and
sportsmanship showed on the day was excellent to see. It was great to see the
number of family members showing their support on the day and a big
thankyou to all who were involved in making sportsday a success.

ANTI BULLYING
Recently we had the Brainstorm drama production visit the school to present shows to all our classes. The
theme centred around respect in school and cyberspace and in building positive relationships. Feedback from
both staff and students was that the play was entertaining, educational and had a positive and strong message.
This production was also a reflection of our school values and helps promote a school environment that is safe,
supportive and one that does not condone bullying.
At times children may say they are being bullied and it is important to differentiate between a thoughtless or
unkind act and bullying. Bullying is ongoing, repeated and involves an imbalance of power.
Bullying is when people repeatedly and intentionally use words or actions against someone or a group of peo-
ple to cause distress and risk to their wellbeing. People who do it usually have more influence or power over
someone else, or want to make someone else feel less powerful or helpless.
Bullying is not the same as conflict between people (like having a fight) or disliking someone, even though
people might bully each other because of conflict or dislike.
The sort of repeated behaviours that can be considered bullying include: Keeping someone out of a group (online or offline)
Giving nasty looks, making rude gestures, calling names, being rude and impolite, and constantly negative teas-
ing.
Spreading rumours or lies, or misrepresenting someone (i.e. using their Facebook account to post messages as
if it were them)
Messing around that goes too far
Harassing someone based on their race, sex, religion, gender or a disability
Intentionally and repeatedly hurting someone
Intentionally stalking someone
Taking advantage of any power over someone else
Bullying can happen anywhere. It can be in schools, at home, at work, in online social spaces, via text messag-
ing or via email. It can be physical, verbal, emotional, and it also includes messages, public statements and be-
haviour online intended to cause distress or harm (also known as cyber bullying)
As a parent you can support your child by:
Staying calm and positive
Talking with your child
Reporting the bullying to the school
Seeking help for your child to improve his/her social skills
As part of the National Day of Action Against Bullying (March 30th) which also coincided with Harmony
Day, we had a poster competition in which all interested children participated. There were prizes for the differ-
ent sections of the school.
The winners were: Junior Primary Liam, Middle Primary Allie, Upper Primary Jamie & Jenna
We will also be having an evening workshop early next term (Tuesday 12th May, Week 3) for parents. The fo-
cus will be how to support children to deal with issues and to become more resilient. More info will be coming
at a time closer to the workshop.
Liam Allie Jaimee & Jenna
On Monday 23/3, nine Victor Harbor Primary
School senior classes attended 90 minute
sessions run by Education Interactive
focussing on Forensic Science and how it is
used in real life situations to help solve
mysterious cases. The workshop was held in
the gym, and the title was “A Case of
Emergency” and dealt with the fictitious (but
based on a real life case) disappearance of a
young boy attending a circus.
During the workshop students heard about and
handled items similar to those involved in the
boy’s disappearance, and used processes of
fingerprinting, UV light analysis, animal
tracks/scats identification, chromatography,
and microscopic examination of leaves/plants/
seeds, to try to piece together vital clues left at
the scene.
The workshop was part of the “Human
Endeavour” strand of Science study at school,
and was intended to show the students that
“The driving force behind all forensic
investigation is the reconstruction of events
based on the evidence examined by the
investigators”. It was a very hands-on
workshop, and seemed to be enjoyed by the
students, who even got to dress up in genuine
forensic suits.
A quick overview of some of the events happening this
year.
We are trialling a new teaching methodology this term
called Teaching with Comprehensible Input. This
means teaching in a way which almost exactly
replicates the process by which each child learned his/
her first language. Students will be in a language rich
environment made understandable (comprehensible)
through the use of body language, visual aids and with
lots of repetition. For more information on the
methodology see ‘Ibu Sharon’s Indo Update’ blog.
In term 2 we have another Indonesian guest teacher
visiting Victor Harbor, Port Elliot and Goolwa Primary
Schools. As with many of our Indonesian guests, they
visit through the APBIPA program. Dates to be
advised.
Our sister school, Sekolah Petra Berkat, in Bali, will be
visiting our school from 13th—20th September (this is
week 9 of term 3). They welcome families from our
school to visit them in Bali any time. So if you are
planning a Bali holiday this year, and are interested in
visiting the school, let us know.
There will be 12 students and 2 teachers working
across the three schools. We are looking for families
that would be willing to host a student (between the
ages of 10-15) in their home. Ideally students would
be billeted in pairs, however we understand this isn’t
always possible. All you need to do is provide a bed,
meals, and travel to & from school. You don't need a
spare room, as they will be just as happy to bunk down
on the floor in your child’s room.
This is a great opportunity for the students to spend
some time experiencing the Australian way of life and
a great opportunity for your family to learn more about
Indonesia and Indonesian culture.
If you are interested in hosting, could you please
register your interest at the front office, or contact
Sharon Mann. Host families will be confirmed as soon
as possible so that police checks can be organised for
anyone over the age of 18.
Terima kasih,
Ibu Sharon
FORENSIC SCIENCE WORKSHOP INDONESIAN NEWS (Sekolah Petra Berkat)
On Monday 2nd March the Dawson/Skene year 5’s
and the Vickery Howe/Dommerdich year 2/3’s spent
part of the morning exploring the rocky beach area
near the Encounter Bay boat ramp. These two classes
are involved in regular buddy lessons with older
students helping the younger ones with science
activities.
It was a lovely morning and the tides were good. The
students were excited to find a large number of crabs.
The classes should be congratulated on the respect and
responsibility they showed towards the marine
environment and each other.
Thank you to the parents and volunteers who came to
help supervise and share the students’ enthusiasm on
the day.
On Tuesday 3rd March the Dawson/Skene (yr 5) and
the McClaren (Yr 5/6) classes went to the mouth of the
Hindmarsh River to test their homemade boats.
The students had a lot of fun and most boats managed
to stay afloat.
In week 4 of this term on 17th February it was Shrove
Tuesday, otherwise known as Pancake Day. The
students in several classes across the school had a great
time cooking, decorating and eating pancakes of their
own creation. It was a lot of fun, and pictured below
are some students from the Dawson/Skene and
McClaren year 5 & 6
classes preparing and
enjoying eating their
creations.
If your contact details have changed please notify the
school by ringing the front office on 8552 1166,
coming to the front office in person, emailing us on
[email protected] or writing a note in
your child’s diary. You can also notify the school of
your child’s absence the same way.
Please note if any of your child’s medical information
changes it is important that you let the class teacher or
the front office know ASAP.
Thank you

PAY IT FORWARD
On Friday the 27th of March the Victor Harbor R-7 School held a fundraising event for the Kersbrook Primary
School because their sports shed burnt down in the recent Adelaide bush fires.
It was a successful day and altogether we raised $505.
When the Victor R-7 School’s classrooms burnt down at the end of last year we had an amazing amount of help
and support so we decided to ‘Pay it forward’. The students donated gold coins and the words ‘Pay it Forward’
were written on the ground with the money.
We would personally like to thank Maureen for organising and spending her day doing this along with Tika, Mar-
lene, Brooke, Chloe and Aliyah.
We hope that Kersbrook Primary School gets back on their feet soon.
