UNLOCKING THE

LEARNERS
Dear Parents and Carers
On Sunday the 16th of June, I attended the 18th International
Children’s Festival with Mrs Hasimoglu, our cultural dance group
students and their parents at the Collingwood Town Hall.
It was a spectacular event with dance performances from children
representing many cultures. I had the privilege of being
entertained by Slovak, Punjabi, Polynesian, Indonesian,
Macedonian, Bosnian, Ukrainian and other cultural dance groups.
Our Meadow Heights Primary School students performed with enthusiasm and
enjoyment which gave us much joy.
I would like to thank Mrs Hasimoglu for working with the students to prepare their
performance during lunchtime. We would like any students who know a cultural
dance to share this with the cultural dance group. This would expand the range of
cultural dances the student will be able to perform while acknowledging the wealth
of different cultures we have at the school. Mrs Hasimoglu would love to hear
from any student who can share their cultural dance.
Have a wonderful week.

Grades 5/6 have had 10 weeks experience with the Melbourne City Soccer Club where they came in for two
hours a week. One session is to work on their soccer skills, the next session is to build robots. The students
worked in groups of three to build robots using coding to make it move and/or talk. Great work Grades 5/6!
On Monday Prep C and Prep D performed their current favourite brain break the ‘Tooty Ta’. Brain breaks are quick, whole-class activities that give our students opportunities to pause, and take a break from learning. This helps the students re-energize and increase their on-task behaviour.
Year 5/6 How to make Turkish Tea Activity in
Turkish Class
Year 5/6 students involved in some Turkish cultural
awareness activities during this term such as getting
familiarise with Turkish symbols, icons, folk tale story
characters, national and religious celebrations etc.
The students watched a video clip with English subti-
tles about the steps of how to make Turkish Tea. They
took notes as they were watching the video clip and
learnt some key words to be able to produce a simple
procedural text in Turkish with the teacher’s assis-
tance.
After Ramadan (Eid) Festival, they involved in a role-
play activity based on Bayram (Eid) visit comparing to
other customs and religious festivals such as Easter.
The students practised some proverbs and gestures
related to Bayram (Eid) Visit.
This week the students involved in making tea activity.
The students explained the step as the tea was being
prepared.

from Meadow Heights Primary School performed at the 18th
International Children’s Festival at the Collingwood Town
Hall (140 Hoddle Street, Abbotsford).
The students danced to a patriotic song called ‘March of Izmir’. This march is Anonymous and written for the Turkish Independence. Some part of the lyrics are as following: Yaşa Mustafa Kemal Paşa Yaşa! - Long live Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Atatürk) long live! Adın yazılacak mücevher taşa. - Your name will be written on the gem stone (of history) I’d like to take the opportunity to extend my regard to MHPS principal Mrs Margaret Leach and our parents for their valuable support. JSC Visit School Council
Members of Junior School Council (JSC) attended School
Council on Tuesday night and spoke to parents about
their goals for 2019. It was wonderful to hear their ideas
and see several parents at the meeting.
The JSC students had many ideas for improving the ap-
pearance of MHPS. They have already started this
through the Clean School Initiative to ensure there is less
rubbish in the yard. Each week the team choose a grade,
which has kept the area near their classroom clean and
they are then presented with a trophy at assembly.
They also wanted to stop students from writing on walls and generally take care of the school. Any damage on path-
ways should be repaired, and the back oval improved. They hoped to encourage students to be kinder and thought of a
friendship tree, so if someone felt lonely they could stand near the tree and be collected by other students who would
play with them. To help students return to class on time they felt we needed to install speakers on the back oval.
JSC collected data from students throughout the school to gain ideas for the play space near the science room. Their
findings included quiet spaces for children, places to sit and read, a nice garden and even a flying fox! To help fund
some of their projects they hoped to fundraise with a sausage sizzle or a Glee Club band performance, which students
would pay money to watch.
They hoped for lunchtime activities, which would include activities such as board or computer games, embroidery and
woodwork, and to look at providing healthy food options for students.
The group wish to let kids have a say and let teachers know what they like. They are planning future surveys to allow
this to happen. At the same time they plan to promote School Wide Positive Behaviour in our school and are develop-
ing some comic displays to do so.
We hope to see some of their suggestions take shape throughout the year. They are a wonderful team of representa-
tives for the students in our school. Keep up the great work JSC!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

SOME USEFUL TIPS FOR DEVELOPING A LOVE OF READING AT HOME
Establish a home reading routine. Read aloud with your children every day. Ten minutes for each child
around a book of his/her choice. If English is your second language, read in your home language. If you lack
confidence in reading aloud, the fact that you are reading with your child is what matters. Talk about the il-
lustrations and contribute where you can. Share your excitement for reading and this will be the model your
child will adopt.
During reading time, turn off electronic devices and give each child ten minutes of your undivided attention.
Make reading a special time that you share together!
At the end of the book ask questions that encourage discussion, for example: What was your favourite part?
Tell me about the characters. What do you think will happen next? What did you think about that setting?
What do like/ dislike about this book?
Provide your child with positive feedback.
Visit the local library — make it a family ritual on a set day every week. Let your children select their books
while you select books you are interested in reading. Not every book has to be read cover to cover. Your
child might select books based on illustrations or factual information about a topic of interest.
Model what it means to be an enthusiastic reader. Create a home of readers where everyone reads – It is
just what we do in this house! Talk about what you have read. Read aloud what makes you laugh and share
it with your child.

kültürel zenginliğimizi sergileyerek tanıtma imkanını elde etmiş
olacaklar.
Sizlere harika bir hafta sonu diliyorum.
