At least, the good ones. Whether they happen to us, or we are taking delight in some wonderful thing that has happened to a friend, positive surprises are welcome. Negative experiences, or shocks, aren't so welcome or easy to cope with. We can learn a lot from Joseph's experiences, as outlined in Genesis. The beautiful coat that his dad gave him must have been a delightful surprise. Visions of his brothers bowing down before him, likewise. As an immature seventeen-year-old, he seems to have thought it was no more than he deserved. Being sold into slavery by his own brothers and experiencing unjust imprisonment, on the other hand, were not welcome surprises. But he did learn and grow through them. We know this because years later when his brothers came down to Egypt seeking famine relief, instead of seeking vengeance on them, he was able to say: "You intended it to harm me, but God intended it for good".
