The students of Banksia have been studying Artist, Pablo Picasso, and completing exercises relating to portraits. Each student completed their own Portrait by cutting and spreading a copy of their own face and applying it to a block painted

background to create subtle distortion. Last term the students completed a 3-D piñata Easter Egg using the technique of paper mâché over a balloon. This was then

filled with delicious treats and enjoyed at Easter time.Cheryl Murray

Year 11 English Studies students are one step closer to landing themselves a job. As most people have experienced going for a job interview can be nerve-wracking and cause us to forget even the most basic of information about ourselves.Year 11 English studies students recently had the chance to explore a job of their choice, complete a job application letter and resume suitable to the job then attend a mock interview with a community expert in the field.Whilst most students admitted that they could have “done a bit better” they all val-ued the experience and felt they learnt from the advice given on the day along with the course content. We would like to thank the community members and the staff from SkillSet in Mudgee for helping us with this task. KICKSTART PHYSICS EXCURSION TO DUBBOYear 12 Physics students participated in an interactive learning experience in Dubbo recently. The day involved the students participating in a number of different practical activities that enhanced their knowledge of the 1st hand investigations that are required as part of the syllabus. Experiments involving liquid nitrogen, others demonstrating the motor effect and electromagnetic induction allowed the students to gain a deeper understanding of how commercial power distribution works. We would like to thank Ms Momsen for organising the excursion and Mr Ludwick for accompanying us for the day.

Year 7 students have been busy harvesting their vegetables this term. The Year 7 vegetable gardens began early Term 1, where students were to design their own garden and research vegetables suitable for the Kandos climate. Some of the vegetables grown include rhubarb, spinach, carrots, radish, cauliflower and lettuce. Year 9 and 10 Agriculture students have been working hard to prepare our Merino wethers for the National Merino Show and Sale in August. Students have broken in the wethers to lead and have also been learning about the nutritional requirements of sheep and how to judge sheep on their meat and wool qualities.

The Support Sensory Learning Garden Project continues to be an engaging learning space for students and staff. Autumn harvesting has taken place and produce used during Food Technology to create a variety of recipes such as Sang Chow Bow, Tomato Relish, Celery and Chicken and Vegetable Soup. Winter planting sessions and garden maintenance are currently underway, allowing students to discover which plants are suitable to grow in our harsh winter climate.

Homework is a valuable part of schooling, it establishes habits of study, concentration and self-discipline.To assist students, the Maths faculty are running two free tutorial sessions for students after school this year. Tutorials will run on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30pm. If your child needs some help with their maths, they may come for all or some of that time. The Mathematics faculty thanks you for your assistance to help your child build these good habits and improve their Mathematical skills.

MATHS HELP

The traditional maths textbooks weighing down school bags are not only heavy, they’re increasingly ‘old school’. The new kid on the block is an amazing online teaching platform developed in Australia and being used around the world.Mathspace is part textbook, exercise book and personal tutor. While it can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection, its real strength is how it’s being used in classrooms. The app breaks down each maths problem into simple steps, and gives you instant feedback and hints. This personalised, step-by-step approach helps students understand how to solve a problem, instead of just supplying the answer. It is now being used in Hong Kong, the US and in more than 200 schools across Australia.Mathspace focuses on a student’s progress when tackling a problem. If they’re struggling to get the correct answer, they can revise the previous lesson before moving forward.
