Growing Vitality in a Volunteering Community
Tena Koutou
Along with a large group of volunteers, I spent a beautiful morning out in at Te Karaka on Wednesday picking daffo-
dils for the Cancer Societys Daffodil Day. Around the district, people have donated their daffodils to this cause, the
patch at Te Karaka is a particularly large one and each year Mrs Cranswick donates them to the Cancer Society.
Many hours have been put into establishing and tending this plot for the benefit of others. Volunteering takes place
in so many different shapes and forms, and this is one example of how it is the generosity of giving in so many ways
that make volunteers a special kind of people.
During the past financial year we have made 314 referrals to community groups , people registering to volunteer
rose slightly and fourteen new organisations joined the Centre. An increasing number of people are registering via
the website. The internet is having an impact on how people become involved in volunteering and they may register
directly with groups. Our focus, however, is to provide a holistic volunteering service, promoting, supporting and
recognising volunteering in the community, so while people registering may remain static, the Centre is busy
strengthening the volunteer sector in the community.
We have some exciting and varied positions available at present , from laying trap lines in the bush to showing
cruise ship visitors around town. We are looking for around 24 new volunteers to be guides and another 36 to helpin a new preloved goods shops opening soon. Check out what is available in the positions available column in this
newsletter, on VolunteerNow or by contacting us, if you are interested in any please let us know.
Since our last newsletter, Grant has moved onto paid employment at EIT, where he is helping people move into the
workforce and Patrick Kaiwai has joined our team. Jane K is back in for a few hours a week and Jane P and Flo are
still providing fantastic support in the office.

Hospice shop, opening soon.
Hospice Tairawhiti shop will be opening its
doors to then Gisborne public soon. After many years
of relying on fundraising events, Hospice has decided
to open a shop to supplement the much needed
funding we need to provide free medical, nursing and
emotional support, as well as equipment to the ter-
minally ill patients and their families in the Gisborne
region.
The Hospice shop will be staffed by 34 volunteers un-
der the expert guidance of a shop manager. Our phi-
losophy of care will be fundamental in the day to day
running of the shop. There will be a strong emphasis
on the benefits of recycling pre-loved clothes and
home wear, to ensure the continuation of the free
specialist care, through our slogan turning second
hand goods into first class care
The Gisborne Volunteer Centre will be advertising
positions to cover 4 hourly shifts. Comprehensive
training will be given to all volunteers interested in
helping Hospice make a success of this great initia-
tive. Please contact Jenny for further information
Menzshed
Are you or do you know someone who a is retired or
unemployed man? Are you sick of sitting at home with-
out being active or having anyone to have a good korero
with? Do you love building and tinkering? A Menzshed
could be the perfect place for you!
Tauawhi Mens Centre is interested to work in collabora-
tion with the Te Tairawhiti community, social service
organizations and businesses towards the development
of a Menzshed in our local region. Menzsheds offer a
friendly, social and active environment for men of all
ages where men are able to participate, engage and
form connections with other men through constructive
activities. Sheds are a place for men to develop friend-
ships, relax and feel safe in an environment where they
are listened to, valued and not judged.
It is important that the development of a shed comes
from the grassroots and is responsive to the local com-
munity and men. We are holding a Consultative Hui on
Tuesday 1st of October 5:30pm at the Gisborne District
Council to hear YOUR korero on the development of a
Menzshed. Kai and tea and coffee will be provided.
