3/4 Learning Community
The Chickens Recently this term we have welcomed five feathery new members to our school community. As part of their
Investigation on the environment, Riley Beste and Mackenzie Ewings from 3/4 Red cleaned and fixed up the
chook shed in the back corner. They researched how to care for the chickens and have been doing a wonderful job
ensuring they are safe and well looked after here at school. The boys got the idea for introducing the chickens as a
result of our increasing school compost, and the chickens love the food. The first eggs were laid on the weekend! If
you haven’t seen the newest members of our school yet please go over and have a look at the chook shed and what
the boys have done, and remember to read the rules and signs on the fence and act respectfully around the chicken
yard. If you would like to know more about the chickens please see either of the boys.
From the 3’4’s:
Hello, we are here to tell you about ‘six word’ stories.
Georgia- What is a six word story?
Here is one example: Waves coming together to make fun. A six word story is when you might have a
magazine, photo, newspaper or a book and you choose a picture and you tell a story in six words.
Daisy- A six word story is a story you have tell in only six words by looking at a picture, book or a
photo. Here is an example: Good times take chances in life.
Jessie- A six word story is a story that you can only use six words to tell and you can do it with a photo.
Here is my best: Nature is closer than you think.
In 3/4 Purple we have been working on writing a proposal. We have written them to ask our teachers if
we could start workshops to teach our fellow students how to do something that we are good at. Our
teacher, Miss Fiesley had written up on the white board a step by step procedure on how to write a
proposal. Step one was to write your name and the subject. The second step was to write the purpose and
the third to write down any background knowledge you have in your head. The fourth step was to write
the solution to the problem and the fifth step was to mention if there would be any costs involved. The
sixth and final step is to write down the conclusion to completely persuade or convince the reader to
agree with you. By Jack Farrow, Darcy Hindle and Lincoln Sertic
Writing a proposal!
In 3\4 we have been writing proposals for either changing something in the area or making a workshop
for Kidspeak on Friday.
A proposal is like a persuasive text except it has different steps and it is asking someone for permission
to do something.
Here are the steps to writing a proposal,
Subject, Introduction, Background Information, Solution, Cost and Conclusion.
We had fun and the whole 3/4 wish to do it again. Remony
Kidspeak
Kidspeak is an opportunity for kids to teach something they know to people who don’t know it. We were
allowed to go into a group or by ourselves when we did our proposal. We had to write a proposal to
convince the teachers to let us run a workshop. Three teachers ran workshops that went for two hours and
all of the others were for one hour, so we had to choose two or one if we went with the teachers. Some of
the workshops were dancing, cooking, art and craft, basketball and Lego. There were lots of really cool
activities, like the one I did with Ms Jordan which was cooking spinach triangles. I liked it because we
learnt things that we did not know. I had lots of fun and I can’t wait until next time when we have
different workshops to choose from. This has been an exciting week for all of the 3/4 kids.
Annie, Moana and Hayley
Two weeks ago we had swimming. First, we were tested to see which group we were going in. The
activities were lots of fun. I learnt how to hold my breath longer.
At the end of the week we did lots of races and diving. It is really important to learn how to swim
because one day you might get stuck in the water and not know what to do.

RESURRECT THOSE EXCESS REUSABLE
BAGS!
Plastic Bag Free Torquay is launching a Bag Amnesty –
where excess reusable bags will be collected, checked and
cleaned, before being returned and offered at the checkout
to those who have forgotten theirs – for free! The Amnesty
will be trialled at the IGA Supermarket, before being
rolled out to other stores.
A collection point for excess bags will be located in the
foyer of St Therese Primary School Office, so dig them out
of storage, and put them to use! And help us in
making Torquay plastic bag free!
Thanks once again, Stacie Bobele for Plastic

5/6 EXPO – A JOB WELL DONE! – You can leave us a
comment on our blog here On Tuesday and Wednesday our 5/6 students held an expo in the hall at school to
showcase their Negotiated Tasks which they had been working on for the majority
of the term.
Our BIG IDEA this term was Olympics with sub foci of Geography, History
and Economics. Each of the students were asked to complete 3 Negotiated
Tasks, with each having an Olympic focus and then each individual one
linking in with either History, Geography or Economics. The students
negotiated these tasks with the teachers and once an agreement was made on
the path each student was taking, they were off.
After 8 weeks of hard work the end result was an array of interesting and fabulous Negotiated Tasks all on display
at our expo. Tuesday's expo was held for the parents and Wednesday's expo was held for the rest of the school. All
feedback given from parents, teachers and students was positive. The students did an amazing job and should be
very proud of them.
NETBALL – TEACHERS v STUDENTS – You can leave us a comment on our blog here
On Wednesday a Netball game
with a twist was played at St
Therese during lunch time –
Teachers V Students. It was
decided by the Year 6 students
that the Sports Leaders would
represent the student body while
a large selection of Teachers
were in rotation for the teacher
side.
There was a lot of support from
all St Therese students who
created cheer squads on the side
lines. The competition was
fierce with both sides playing
their hardest. In the end the
teachers won 10-2.
A big thank you to all teachers
and students who participated in
the game and a HUGE thank
you to Miss Day who organised
the game!
YEAR 5 EXCURSION – You can leave us a comment on our blog
here On Thursday 13th September, the Grade 5’s enjoyed a day full of activities. We
started off at Vic Beach Geelong where the students participated in beach volleyball
and soccer. After that, we headed off to Bella’s Restaurant in Waurn Ponds for some
delicious pizza before then going over to Leisurelink. Students had a fantastic time
and represented our school beautifully. A great day was had by all!
COTTAGE BY THE SEA – THANK YOU! For the past 3 weeks we have been selling raffle tickets to win a skateboard
and also doing a food drive for “Cottage by the Sea” in Queenscliff.
By selling raffle tickets we raised $239.50 and we bought a whole box full
of food like canned tomatoes, flour, sugar, milo, honey and juice boxes. We
went around every day after lunch to every class and sold tickets - we sold
741 raffle tickets. We earned a lot more than we expected, so thank you
everyone who participated and supported us. The winner of our raffle was:
Eddy. M from 3/4.
“Cottage by the Sea” is a place for children who don’t have enough money
to go on holidays. The children go there for a week and have a great time at the beach and interesting
places like that. They play football, basketball, make paintings and dress up. Thank you for your
generosity, Emma Walters, Emma Quinn, Alexia Conway and Kesia Buckley

5/6 Interschool Sports
During Term Three the 5/6 learning community were involved in interschool sports. The sports were
football, netball and softball. We managed to play 4 games out of the possible 7 due to the weather. The
schools we played against were St Patrick’s, Star of the Sea, Holy Spirit and St Patrick’s again. The games
were fun and quite competitive. We managed to win most of our games through good teamwork and great
skills.

St Therese Golf Team News! Congratulations to the St T Therese Golfers from Year 5 and 6 who have competed in a number of events
this term. After some early tough competitions, one of our students, Ruby Hurley from Year 6, qualified
for the State finals and recently participated in the event at Koringal Golf Club against some very tough
opposition from all around the state. Ruby tried her very best on the day and should be very proud of her
achievements even though she didn't quite have her best score in the final event. The St. Therese school
community is very proud of you Ruby! Well done!

Extend OSHC at St Therese Primary School: A message from the Team Leader:
“We have had a happy and productive term at After School Care. Most days we were able to get outside for a play,
in spite of the winter weather. On cold days, the children enjoyed hot snacks. When the weather forced us to stay
indoors, the children produced an amazing variety of artworks. A small but dedicated group is still making up
puppet plays. We went through the “Master Chef” phase, had lantern making competitions and built towers to rival
those at San Gimignano.
Next term we will be able to spend more time outdoors in the spring weather. We have also planned lots of
interesting indoor activities, including making our own books. In the second half of the term, we will be making
Christmas decorations, cards and preparing a Christmas play. Again, we are keen to hear any suggestions from our
parents.
Nicola, Melissa, Jo and I hope that you and your children enjoy the holiday break and we look forward to
welcoming you back next term.”
