Apprentice For Life Apprentice for Life Lecture Series

(held at the Senior Center)

All lectures are free, reservations are appreciated.

The Curious Myth of Biddle City

Wednesday, September 12 at 1 pm

In 1904, the Lansing Journal first printed the story, "When Lansing Was Biddle City," as a

"pioneer recollection" of the elderly Daniel Buck, looking back to 1836. Buck was a three-

time mayor, owner of the furniture store, builder of the Opera House, and an undertaker.

Everybody knew Daniel Buck. He said men from Tompkins County, NY bought land in Biddle

City, but when they arrived at the site in mid-Michigan, there was no town. The land was

underwater, and the men they bought lots from did not own the land. Hear how the presenters

grew suspicious of the founding story, became detectives and pieced together maps, property

deeds, family diaries, and more! Come and learn about this enticing "story."

About the speakers: David Votta and Linda Peckham are accomplished speakers and authors.

They have been members of the Historical Society of Greater Lansing as well as many other

history related organizations.

Generously underwritten by Home Repair Services of Kent County

This trusted and respected non-profit organization touches thousands of households each year

through home repair and improvement classes, remodeling coaching, home inspections,

foreclosure counseling, repair assistance and access modifications for seniors.

Mt. Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa

Monday, October 29 at 1pm

In August 2013, GVSU history professor, Craig Benjamin set out to climb the two highest

mountains in Africa - Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro. His party, which included his daughter,

brother and niece, successfully completed the arduous ascents of these two spectacular ancient

volcanic mountains. In this lavishly illustrated lecture, Craig will share his adventures with us,

and discuss some of the history of exploration and mountaineering in the East African region.

About the Speaker: Craig Benjamin, Ph.D. is a professor of history at the Frederik J. Meijer

Honors College at GVSU. Craig is a frequent guest presenter at conferences worldwide, and

the author of several books and articles. He has programs on The History Channel and The

Presentations (Continued) Relocation Without the Frustration

Thursday, October 11 @ 1pm

You may be thinking of a future move. Whether it is now or in the future, you can start

educating yourself for this event now. If it's downsizing to another home, moving to senior

housing, or downsizing everything into a motorhome, we will support you in making the

transition as easy as possible. You will learn about home values, whether or not it makes sense

for you to move yet, walk you through the best way to downsize your possessions and prepare

your home to sell for the best price, and help you locate your next forever space.

About the Speaker: Lynette Bowser is a licensed Realtor as well as an interior designer. This

uncommon combination sets her apart and gives her an unique perspective. She offers a pre-

listing consultation as well as a walk-through to offer suggestions on what can be done to get

your home ready to list. She gives you ideas on how to stage your home, can make all the

suggested selections with you and enlist any contractors that need to be involved. She

coordinates the project for you! Lynette removes all the barriers for her clients.

Presentations (Continued) Don’t Let Your Feet Hold You Back

Monday, October 22 @ 1pm

As we age, standing and walking can be

painful. In addition to foot pain, our changing

feet can cause knee, hip and back alignment

issues which can cause discomfort and can

even lead to arthritic complications. Feet are

the body’s foundation, and as the foot slowly

breaks down over a lifetime, the impact on

balance and daily comfort can sneak up on us

and begin to limit our ability to live an active

joyful life. The good news is that you don’t

have to accept this fate! There are ways to

properly support your feet that can greatly

improve comfort and balance.

About Foot Solutions Grand Rapids:

We are a FOOT HEALTH STORE that

“looks” like a shoe store. We are all about

taking exceptional care of folks who suffer

from foot pain. Our store is staffed by

Certified Pedorthists and we are trained to

help relieve these issues.

People come in describing heel pain, arch

pain, ball-of-foot pain, or they tell us about

sore ankles, knees, hips or lower back. Many

care for a spouse or loved one all day, or they

are starting to feel discomfort when walking

for exercise or grocery shopping.

We are unique in that even though we’re a

retail store - we typically spend at least 15-20

minutes with a customer “getting to know

their feet” before we introduce footwear.

give everyone an opportunity to go.

Although we are spreading this trip across a one year timeframe, we are still taking the same

number of participants as we have always taken.

Our future dates will be November 15, 2018, January 31 2019, and March 28 2019 however

we are only registering for the October 10 date at this time.

Friday, September 7: Saints & Spirits Walking Tour

The bucolic grounds of Aquinas College abound with not only beauty, but historically

intriguing stories of earlier lives who traversed the woods, gardens and streams. The tour will

visit today’s campus buildings that date from the original Lowe family era: the mansion,

carriage house, stables, winery, and gatehouse. We will also investigate various landmarks on

campus which foster superstitious traditions. And maybe, just maybe, we witness a spirit of

haunted Holmdene before we peek at Brookby, a “related” mansion just around the corner.

Friday, September 14: String of Pearls Walking Tour

There are so many unusual and interesting sights and noteworthy Grand Rapids landmarks

that do not fit neatly into an existing “themed” tour. So, we string them together in this

invaluable tour of gems and jewels, and call it a String of Pearls. From historically significant

buildings to an amazing astronomical post, earliest millstone, colonial horse trough, and a

century-old American Elm tree, we will astonish you with over one dozen brilliant

“pearls”. What a treasure!

Friday, September 21: Market to Market Tour

We will visit the city’s oldest farm market, the Fulton Street Market, bustling with shoppers

and delectables. We will have an opportunity to walk amongst the vendors and perhaps fill

your personal baskets with the fresh-picked features of the day. Boarding the bus again, we

travel onward through East Town and down the Wealthy Street corridor to the newest food

marvel in town, the Downtown Market, alive with epicureans and local mouth-watering treats.

We’ll stroll inside, marveling at the 20+ vendors. A great tour to enjoy the season’s bounty!
