Happy fall everyone!

Congratulations to Ron Lentz for winning our annual cribbage tournament. He won several months ago, but I forgot to post the result (jealous, I guess). The next cribbage tournament isn’t scheduled yet, but you all should be honing your skills. It’s always a lot of fun and is a great way to meet other members of the church.

Ron Lentz also took top prizes for Best Chili and Best Pie at our recent Chili & Pie cook-off!

Smile Not that you need another reason to smile as you walk the church grounds, but now you may be on camera. For enhanced safety and security, Ring video cameras are being installed at strategic locations around the property.

Thanks for your continued support and involvement!

Jeff Thoelke, Board President

October 2019

“For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save

it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?

(Luke 9:24–25)

Life in God is full of paradoxes. When we reflect on how God works and the life of faith we start see-

ing how different it can be. The gospel message is about God’s redeeming act. Here we learn that we must de-

ny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Jesus. Here’s the thing: crosses are for dying. How can an instru-

ment of death lead to life? Even more paradoxically, if I desire to save my life by losing my life in order that

Jesus might save it. Wouldn’t that appear to be a contradiction? It seems like simply obeying this command

will result in… not obeying it.

Along these lines, our hope is in the forgiveness of God. However, even here we start to see how much

we need to be saved. As Paul put its. “I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh; for I have the

desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19For I do not do the good I want to do. Instead, I keep on

doing the evil I do not want to do. 20And if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living

in me that does it.” (Romans 7:18-20)

One Christian writer, G. K. Chesterton, put it this way: the paradox of being human is that we’re both

“chief of creatures” and “chief of sinners.” For as we strive forward in faith, we start to see how much we fail

at our callings. We see how much we fall short and how much God’s grace surpasses it all.

Fall is a mark of changes in the church calendar. The long green season is nearing its end with festivals

and celebrations starting with Advent/Christmas right around the corner. This month we celebrate Reformation

Day, with its focus on the Grace of God and the power and importance of Scripture as it reveals God's will for

us in Christ. The paradox of this day filled with life is seen when we see its counterpoint, All Saints Day. For

All Saints Day is a day both of sadness and grief, but its centers on remembering and celebrating the lives of

those saints in Christ who have gone on before us. Focusing on those who serve as inspirational examples for

Christian life and most importantly the life that was given to those who are departed. Truly a paradox, when

we celebrate the life given in Jesus when one loses their life.

Paradoxes might be fun – but there is more to this than mental exercises. Often, we look at days like

Reformation and it becomes ‘theoretical day.’ However, the message of the Reformation is the call to the Gos-

pel. A message of the complete forgiveness won in Jesus and the perfect life he lived for you. Not just some-

thing we give lip service to but actual new life given. New forgiven life, that calls us to change how we live,

not out of threat but because it changed who we are. That's where Reformation and All Saints meet: in the

lives of people we care for who brought us inspiration and joy and challenged us to live lives of faith, that is,

in the Saints that God sent into our lives to show us his presence.

With the struggle of living the reformation-faith till we gain the life given to us in Jesus, we see a

glimpse of life in Jesus’ words. One of the readings for All Saints Sunday is the Sermon on the Mount from

Luke's Gospel (Luke 6:20-31).

Here we read Jesus' simple, basic, impossible guide to saintly living. As a reflection exercise, read the life that Jesus calls you to in Luke 6:20-31. Reflect on who Jesus says is blessed. Who does He speak “woe” to and how you are to treat your enemy? Jesus' outline of the simple, love- and faith-based life is such a worthy challenge. Don’t allow this to become something merely theoretical but hear the call to live in the challenging paradox/reality of Life in Christ

God’s Peace We all great each other with these word on Sunday morning. But what is peace. When I think of peace, I think of things like a sleeping child or a rain-bow after a storm. I think St. Paul put it well when he said, “the peace that passes all understanding.” You only have to watch the five o’clock news to see that this world is in great need of God’s Peace. My prayer for us all is that God’s enduring peace should be the force in our lives that keeps us going in the right direction along with enduring love. Thank you for giving me this little opportunity to express my thoughts. Have a great October friends. God’s Peace, Paul Muhle The six elders are; Paul Muhle, Phil Zafft, Don Ronfeldt, William Kittler, Bill Lair and Marvin Pascual. If anyone has any suggestion how we can better serve this church please feel free to contact anyone

of us.

Caring Community There are so many ways that we can help around the church. One of the ways we can come together, helping the church and its

missions, is in some of the prep work. Caring Communities is a group looking to help the needs of the church and school with some projects. Everyone is always invited to come and join us at our Thurs-day’s school chapels. This is another

way to come see the school, show support to the teachers and make connections with the parents and

teachers.

Over the summer we held monthly Game Nights. After a month off, we will return to holding these every month.

Beautiful Savior Lutheran School is a great place for children! It is a school where there are classes for children from birth

through Pre-K age. Everyone is welcome at BSLS, and it reflects the community. There are eight different nationalities

represented with seven different languages plus English being spoken in the homes of the students.

Children have been adjusting quickly to a new school routine and class expectations. Already children have been able to

play rhythm instruments, participate in group dances, work on letters and letter sounds, count, sort, create patterns, put

puzzles together, paint, manipulate clay, build with blocks, play in the home center and hear many stories. On dry days

the children also enjoy the playground where they love to climb on the equipment, play Shadow Tag, Freeze Tag, Duck

Duck Goose, London Bridge and more. Teachers have been busy doing assessments of each child. Every Thursday, Pastor

Chris comes for Chapel. The children enjoy singing praise songs, hearing the Bible Stories, praying and collecting offering.

During the month of September our offering basket was overflowing with bars of soap and deodorant. All the collected

mission items will go to Refugees Northwest. Thank you for your continued prayers, suggestions, donations and support.

May God continue to bless us as we work together to make BSLS a great place for children and families.

Blessings, Mrs. Kittler (Mrs. K.)

the families might be successful. During Thursday Chapels, Pastor Chris also uses the video

series that accompanies this Bible.

It is our prayer that families will grow in their walk with Jesus as we all learn together

throughout the year.
