Paul Pyrcik Ornamental Turning

Paul Pyrcik brought in his MDF Rose-Engine Ornamental Lathe, explained what it could do, and gave us a quick demo. This machine is not inexpensive, but is capable of an amazing array of ornamental products using program disks (bottom left) that can be purchased. Thanks Paul for an interesting machine and presentation.

Paul (on left) is doing a demo (below) for Bill Schwartz (middle) and Bill Hochmuth (right). Paul mentioned Jon Magill’s web page and articles as a resource for those interested in pursuing this subject further. http://www.whidbeyworks.com/root/Home.html

Member Check-in

The FVWWC Board and some members have noticed a few individuals regularly attending our meetings and enjoying our programs and hospitality that have not paid their dues. In some cases, they are past members who have not paid their dues for several years. As you know, guests are always welcome at our meetings, but after checking us out and continuing to attend meetings, we think you should join the club. Our membership dues are the main source of funds that cover the cost of the meeting room, speaker’s fees, and refreshments – which can exceed $300 per month. Dues are a modest $30 per year for individuals – that’s only $2.50 per month – even the refreshments and coffee are worth that much! So, we will have a member check-in table at the July meeting. If you are not current on your 2014 dues, we ask that you become so or not attend. Some of you may not remember if you have paid up for 2014 or may have forgotten your badge – we’ll check the current membership list for you. Steve Fox, our membership guy, will be there to get you current if need be.

Raffle The Big Raffle is still alive! The items being raffled are 2 Veritas saws. One is a crosscut tenon saw; the other is a rip tenon saw. These are professional grade hand tools valued at $250.00. Tickets are $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00. All members current in their dues are eligible.

Silent Auction

One of the ways FVWWC raises funds for our programming and awards is via the items donated for the silent auction table. While many of us are notorious packrats, at some point you have to give in and clean out your stash of unneeded woodworking tools, wood, and other supplies. That way you can free up room to get more stuff! So, get on the ball and dig through your workshop shelves, toolboxes, and cabinets for items someone else might want. It’s a three way win – you get more space, the club gets some cash, and the buyer gets something he needs.

Howard's Corner with Howard Van Valzah

Aka: The Woodorker

There have been a few situations lately where there were questions on how to proceed with a project. As usual when doing church projects it is often a committee where getting answers takes a lot of time and when you get the answer it does not seem right to you. So I usually decide not to ask and go ahead my way. So far that has always worked out. A good example of that is the sign I made to direct visitors to the church office. Our Pastor asked me to "spruce up" the old sign but offered no details and left for a three week vacation.

I visited a local craft store and found they had wooden lettering that was the right size to fit the existing sign board, but there was no room for the arrow pointing in the right direction. I decided to go ahead, bought the lettering and a small bottle of outdoor Acrylic yellow paint. I cut out a triangle to attach to the old signboard to show the direction and the result was quite satisfactory to me, but I had no idea how others would accept it since it was well beyond sprucing up. Our Pastor is not yet returned but everyone else who saw the sign this past Sunday commented favorably.

The risk involved in going ahead on your own is not as high as you might think and I would recommend you try it if you haven't already. But remember it is a bit different when you are doing it for a paying customer. The risk is higher and it depends a lot on your customer. If you have worked for him before and he was pleased, it's a whole lot safer to go on your own. With a new customer the cost of waiting time will not be as bad as the cost of not getting paid for the work done.

How many router bits are enough?

You can’t have too many router bits – or can you?? Over the years, I have accumulated a large collection of router bits. Early on, I bought those router bit sets that come in nice wood boxes that were said to provide for most of your basic routing needs. NOT! Many of those bits are still in pristine new condition – unused after decades. For each new project, I search my collection and inevitably find new router bits are required. The crown molding and trim for my period secretary desk designed by Lonnie Bird, required special bits to replicate the authentic period profiles. None of my existing router bits even came close. But CMT offers a special Lonnie Bird set with all the bits needed – hmmm! Butterfly inlays for a cabinet project? A new 1/8 inch carbide spiral bit is required! Pattern routing project? Whoops, a top bearing pattern bit is needed and I only have a bottom bearing bit. On and on and on it goes – you get the idea.

This is some of my router bit collection – shown not to brag but to emphasize my point that you never have enough router bits.

Even when you had the right bits, a change in equipment will send you to the store for more. I replaced my old dovetail jigs with a new one, and voila, my existing dovetail bits are the wrong size for the new jig. Lie Nielsen uses special bits for their jigs which they are happy to supply at a premium price. Thankfully, I found that Woodcraft sells equivalent bits at a better price. Then, I thought I had all the necessary LN dovetail bits until I needed to make drawers with 3/8 inch thick sides the other day. Nope - another trip to Woodcraft for yet another router bit. Most frustrating of all is having so many bits that you don’t recall what you have and so you end up buying duplicates. And, I have learned that the router bit manufacturers don’t always distinguish clearly between radius and diameter. I recently ordered a 3/16 “diameter” bull nose bit only to discover they meant 3/16 inch radius. I already had two 3/8 inch diameter bits and now have three. I have a 3/32 inch radius bit on order – I hope they didn’t mean diameter! Adding insult to injury, some of these necessary bits are used only once. Maybe we should have the club stock router bits for loan. Could we ever have enough? Probably not – the Woodcraft store has a great selection of router bits, but sometimes even they have to special order the one I need.
