On May 15th, Blue Jays fans across Canada kept the phone lines hot as they bid on exclusive Blue Jays experiences and memorabilia during the 5th Annual Sportsnet Charity Broadcast Auction presented by TD.
Thank you to everyone who stepped up to the plate and supported Jays Care by entering the All Access Contest, purchasing one of 750 Fan Packs, and bidding on 10 auction items.
Thank you to Evanka Osmak for hosting the evening, the Sportsnet production crew, and our valued sponsors, TD Bank, WestJet and UPS, for your generosity and support in helping make this our most successful Broadcast Auction yet!
On May 4th, 285 children and parents from Camp Oochigeas spent the afternoon enjoying carnival games, face painting and ballpark fare in the John St. Terrace, and later cheered on their Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre!
On May 2nd, Toronto Blue Jays catcher JP Arencibia, nutritionist Jennifer Sygo and Blue Jays mascot ACE visited a Grade 2 class of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Toronto to discuss the importance of eating healthy and staying active.
Major League Baseball named the Toronto Blue Jays the 2012 recipient of the Commissioner’s Award for Philanthropic Excellence, which recognizes the extraordinary charitable and philanthropic efforts of an MLB club. The Blue Jays were honoured for the Blue Jays Baseball Academy, a series of initiatives to help support youth across Canada and provide them with opportunities on and off the fi eld of play.
By covering J

REMOVING BARRIERS TO SPORT & RECREATION
Get started:bluejays.com/supportjayscare
In response to this widespread need for affordable recreational
programming, Jays Care has partnered with Toronto Foundation
for Student Success’s beyond 3:30 after-school program.
A Grand Slam Grant recipient, beyond 3:30 gives 1,350 at-risk
students a chance to be active every day, eat a healthy meal, and
learn to play baseball in a safe environment – at no cost to them
or their families.
The availability of physical activity programming is severely
limited by the cost of operating accessible facilities and hiring
highly-trained staff. In addition, the fi nancial burden placed on
families to enroll in these programs is another major barrier to
physical activity.
Jays Care has partnered with Variety Village to provide a “fi rst
step” to physical activity for children with disabilities. Children
in Motion teaches the fundamentals of sport to kids that have
a tough time learning through traditional instruction.
After meeting Lucas and Zane Braun, you won’t soon forget
their contagious laughter and witty sense of humour. In
many ways, Lucas and Zane are your average teenage boys,
playing baseball in their yard and video games on weekends.
What makes them so different is they both were born with
Morquio syndrome. It’s the reason they won’t grow taller than
3 feet, have endured weekly three-hour drives to Sick Kids
Hospital appointments, had 11 orthopedic surgeries, and have a
signifi cantly shortened life span.
Despite their ever-present physical challenges, their outlook on
life is unmatched. “You don’t have to fi x me, Mom. I’m perfect
just the way I am,” claimed Lucas at the young age of 5.
For the past fi ve years, Lucas and Zane have been thrilled to
attend Camp Woodeden, an Easter Seals program, and a Jays
Care Grand Slam Grant recipient.
What makes Camp Woodeden so great? With two-to-one staff
support and fully-accessible activities, it’s the perfect summer
By covering Jays Care’s staffi ng costs, Rogers Media Inc. helps
ensure your donation goes towards helping kids across Canada
reach their full potential. In addition, Rogers Media helps
spread the word about Jays Care through their national media
properties in an effort to make more Blue Jays fans aware of
our impact from coast to coast.
Thank you, Rogers, for your unbelievable generosity, steadfast
support and collective belief in our vision for Canada’s
children and communities.
Toronto Blue Jays fans are encouraged to show their support
for Jays Care by hosting a Fan Fundraiser! Planning a birthday
party, corporate event, car wash, bake sale, dinner party or
slow-pitch tournament are all great ways to raise funds and
help kids across Canada reach their full potential.
Have you thought of a creative way to pitch in? Whether
your goal is to raise $100 or $1,000, we’d love to help you get
started in planning your own Fan Fundraiser!
getaway for the Braun brothers. Growing up in small-town
Ontario, they had limited exposure to kids with physical
disabilities, leading them to believe they were the only ones in
the world with a disability. For Debbie Braun, Woodeden helps
her sons understand they aren’t alone. They can make lifelong
friendships with kids facing obstacles just like them.
Despite the high costs of operating the camp – costs
that would put enrolment out of reach for many families
– Woodeden ensures that no one is turned away. To help
give even more kids the chance to get active and make
unforgettable memories, Jays Care has subsidized the cost of
56 kids to attend Woodeden.
On entering the tree-lined Camp Woodeden grounds, you
approach a sign that reads Future World Leaders at Play. “As
a parent of kids with disabilities, you get stuck thinking about
all the obstacles your children are facing,” said Debbie. “When
you see that sign, you realize that anything is possible.”
Growing up in Toronto’s priority neighbourhoods can be
challenging, with increased poverty, immigration issues and
violence. Middle-school aged children are particularly vulnerable.
At this age, parental supervision decreases, gang recruiting and
dropout rates increase, and opportunities to participate in sport
and recreation are extremely limited.
In Toronto’s priority neighbourhoods, only 5% of young people have access to after-school programs of any kind.1
A lack of equal access to recreational opportunities is the most signifi cant reason why only 3% of kids with a disability participate in sport.2
“It’s a very cool place for kids to come after school,
hang out and play sports, and just be involved in
a good program put on by great people who, like
myself, love community.”
— Brett Lawrie | 13 Infi elder, Toronto Blue Jays
“Thanks to Jays Care Foundation, and our incredible staff, many of our kids quickly transition from one-to-one to three-to-one support throughout the 11-week session. Kids learn the fundamentals of recreation and move on to grass roots and competitive sports. Children in Motion is our starting block for a lifetime of activity.”
— Robyn Parashyniak, Variety Village
“beyond 3:30 and Jays Care Foundation believe that if we can help our young people succeed in school, we all win. If our youth are healthier and more active, we all win. And, if our young people are connected to their school communities – and to each other – then this can only benefi t the wider community and make our city healthier.”
— Shannon Quesnelle, beyond 3:30
Toronto Blue Jays infi elder Brett Lawrie cuts the ribbon for the grand opening of Langley Boys and Girls Club’s Jays Care
Community Clubhouse in December, 2012. This $250,000 Field of Dreams project will serve 250 kids each day.
