Spring is in the air!

Our new year got off to a great start with much to celebrate.

Our Annual General Meeting was held on Friday 7th March. We voted in a new Committee to run our Centre for the rest of this year and into

next: Chair Angela Brydges Vice Chair Pat Annis Treasurer Jacqueline Westbrook Minute Secretary Barry Newitt Committee Joyce Hale

Helen Anastasi (Gardening Group)

We REALLY need more help because next year, both our Chair and Treasurer are planning to step down from their roles after many years loyal service. We need willing people to come on board to learn the ropes and get involved to ensure a seamless handover and the future of this Centre. The commitment isn’t huge – you need to attend a management meeting one evening per month (7.30-9.00pm) 10 times a year.

Contact Angie (07770 785512) or Donna (07732 806925) for further information and check the date of the next meeting.

Dedication to Derek At the end of our AGM, we had the opportunity to honour one of our long standing members of the Uxbridge Centre, Derek Munn, who has been part of the Association since the very beginning, back in 1983. Derek has been Chair, Treasurer, Buildings & Maintenance Manager and Health & Safety Officer over his many years’ service and is a skilled carpenter. He has worked tirelessly for the Centre and has been made an honorary member.

Derek is pictured with The Deputy Mayor, Catherine Dann, Deputy Mayoress, Rita Kilroy and Councillor Judith Cooper who made the presentation of a trophy, hand crafted by Stephen Ross, depicting tools in action and a dedication

plate. Thank You Derek!

Since Autumn last year, Jane Greer (local artist) has been leading us in a community project to commemorate our 30 years as a community centre. We wanted to create a tapestry and involve as many people as possible from the local community. Together with David Varley, (Designer) they came up with a theme of community, history and architecture unique to our neighborhood.

Fabric panels were issued for people to sew, paint, applique whatever image was special to them – so each panel has a little story as well as being relevant to our community. Our small hall was turned into a gallery of art when we opened our doors on Sunday 9th March and displayed the 40 panels we had so far received.

The Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Allan Kauffman and his wife Lynne graced the occasion and commended us on a unique display of talent.

It was SEW good we made front page news (in the Gazette anyway!)

Before we bring all of the panels together to make one tapestry, there are plans to exhibit the individual panels within the Uxbridge community for everyone to enjoy.

It’s not too late to get involved – if you want to contribute, contact the Uxbridge Centre and Donna will put you in touch with Jane.

The cost is £50 per child per week and the children will be lead in a range of activities including craft, games and sports. It is planned to take the children on a trip one day of each each week.

A group is pictured here on their visit to the Iver Nature Study centre last year.

Nicola will shortly be contacting families who have attended previously. To register your interest, please email [email protected]
