At Woodlands many of our patients living with lifethreatening illnesses attend a special ten weekSupportive Living Programme designed to enablethem to live life to its full potential for aslong as possible. The programme consists of a variety of sessions thathelp patients explore hopes, fears, concerns andanxieties. It offers advice and support and coping strategiesto help them manage living with illness. A group of patients attend

each session and this allows them to shareexperiences and offer peer support. Duringthe sessions the group may openlyexpress concerns they haveabout death and dying andtheir families and loved ones. They will

also cover topics such as body image, symptom control, nutrition, stress and anxiety.

Supportive care is now considered of equalimportance for the patient as the diagnosis andtreatment of life threatening conditions. Itaddresses different stages intheir journey and nurturesa therapeutic relationshipwith the patient.Specialist nurses facilitatethe sessions by listening toand guiding patients and offeringemotional and spiritual support.

The Supportive Living Programmeencourages self-management of

symptoms by providing information andeducation, empowering patients, andimproving confidence and self-esteem.This enables patients to regain control of

their lives and make informed choices.

Once they finish the programme many patients choose to remain incontact and so continue to attend each week as part of a supportgroup, allowing friendships that have developed to

continue andto offer peersupport.

Sheila Mills, Senior Nurse, whofacilitates the programme says“It is a real privilege to shareeach patient’s journey; I amreally passionate about mywork and get so much frombeing able to empower ourpatients”.

Supportive Living

As the WardManager atWoodlandsHospice, Iregularly

meet with patients and relativesat a difficult time in theirlives. In my role, thefamilies and loved onesof our patients oftenask me if they can havesome kind of memorial atthe hospice for their lovedone. This year, for the firsttime, we’re offering you thechance to do just that. Our Forget-me-not Appeal gives you theopportunity to dedicate a beautifulwooden flower to celebrate the life of aloved one. The flowers will be hand-written with your loved one’s name anddisplayed in our gardens throughout July.

At the end of July, you are welcome to

collect your flower at one of our specialcollection events. It’s a lovely way tosupport us and remember your loved ones.

One such family member, Anne, shares herstory here of why she is choosing tosupport our Forget-me-not Appeal.

By making a donation to dedicate aForget-me-not to your loved one, youwill not only be celebrating their life, you will be helping us to support ourpatients and their families at a time theyneed it most.

ABOUT WOODLANDS HOSPICE

and the poem shewrote recently

www.forgetmenotappeal.org

We support each other as we all experience

similar problems.

Can saythings you couldnever say to your

family

We can talk about anything

and everything

Highlight of my week coming to this session, I can be

myself.

Can’t do with all the pity, I want positivity

in my life and this programmeand the group help me get on

with my life.

Anne’s story“My sister Julie was an inpatient ontwo occasions at Woodlands. Theword ‘Hospice’ frightened us, butafter seeing the way Julie andothers were treated it totallychanged our view. The care was fantastic, nothing was too muchtrouble. I can’t put aprice on what they did forJulie and us as a family. It is a place of laughter and friendly faces, patience, care and compassion. That’s why I came back as avolunteer.Thank you for what you did for my sister, I will neverforget it.The Forget-me-not Appeal is such a great way toremember Julie and all loved ones and give thesupport to our local hospice in order to provide carefor others in their time of need.”

I first decided to be adoctor when I wasaround 14. I alwaysloved science and itseemed the rightpath for me as Iwanted to put that topractical helpful use –I think I would misspeople if I was stuckin a laboratory all

day! I came to Liverpool in 1997 to studyMedicine at the University. Liverpool wasmy first choice because everyone wasvery friendly when I went to visit and Ihad always wanted to live near the sea.As a medical student I did a four weekplacement at Queenscourt Hospice and I lovedit. I had never been inside a hospice before andwas anxious about it, not knowing what Iwould be faced with. It just made perfect senseto me, such a different, much more commonsense way of caring for the whole person, helping someone to feel better even if youcouldn’t make them better. This philosophy ofcare really appealed to me and I began to thinkthat this might be something I could do in thefuture. I like the way of thinking we have inPalliative Care - I recently attended a coursewith other doctors and I suddenly realisedthat everyone else was dressed in sober grey, black or navy and I had on my pink fluffyjumper which made me chuckle inwardly abouthow different we are (or maybe I just haverubbish dress sense!). Looking back on my medical student hospiceplacement made me realise how important it isto ensure that medical students come tohospices and find out about what we do andspeak with our patients and families who canteach them so much about what is importantto them. Even if they never consider PalliativeMedicine as a career, I hope the students comeaway from their placements here at Woodlandsmore confident to care for patients who havePalliative Care needs. After several years training and working atseveral hospices in the North West, (in fact Iwas the first registrar on Woodlands in-patientward), I qualified as a Consultant in PalliativeMedicine and I am now Clinical Lead atWoodlands. I feel it is a privilege to care forpeople and their families at this often quitevulnerable time in their lives. I enjoy tacklingthe complex problems that patients may beexperiencing. Every day presents newchallenges and our aim is to help people live aswell as possible in the place they want to be,which is usually in their own home. Each morning I call into the Hospice in-patientward for the handover meeting where thedoctors and nurses discuss the needs of eachpatient and any problems which need to beaddressed. We then plan the admissions for theday, looking at who has been referred, andprioritising admissions according to need. Thisis one of the most difficult aspects of our job, trying to make the right decisions on theinformation we have available from the doctorsand nurses who refer patients for inpatient

care. The Hospice beds are a scarce resourceas there are only 15 of them. The decisionmaking process can therefore be difficult andwe admit people for different reasons; paincontrol, or other symptoms such as vomiting, psychological support, or a drain to relieve fluidin the abdomen. Some people are admitted toundergo a specialist procedure for paincontrol via our join Pain and Palliative Careclinic which I do together with Dr ManoharSharma, who is a Pain Specialist from theWalton Centre. He performs a variety ofprocedures including one called a percutaneouscordotomy which can be very effective forpatients with certain types of severe pain. There are only a few places in the country thatoffer this procedure so it is great to be able tooffer this to our patients as it makes such adifference to them. Most patients come in forjust a short stay and once their symptoms areunder control they return home.If it’s a Tuesday, I go straight to themultidisciplinary meeting where the wholeteam of doctors, nurses, Physiotherapists andOccupational Therapists, Discharge Planner andFamily Support Team meet to discuss the needsof all our inpatients and suggest alterations totheir care plans. After this I do my ward round, when I meet with all patients individually. Thecare we provide at the Hospice is holistic so Itry to take my lead from the patient, discussingwhat is most important to them. Conversationswith patients can often be very difficult, theymay be worrying about what will happen tothem, or they may have concerns about theirfamilies, especially if they have young children. Patients with children often worry about whois caring for them at home and so we plan theircare to enable them to return home quickly. Some patients have young grandchildren whothey are very close to so we see a lot ofchildren visiting: playing with toys in thecommunal areas and enjoying the gardens. Wealso offer advice on how to explain to childrenwhat is happening and support children afterbereavement. I often meet with families toupdate them on the condition of a closerelative and answer their questions.Often a patient wishes to return home for aspecial anniversary or Christmas or to watch afootball match at home with their family, andwe try really hard to make this possible.Sometimes a patient misses a favourite pet sowe have visits from dogs and cats on the ward.I also see outpatients in my clinic in thehospital or the Pain Clinic in the Hospice. It isnice to get to know people over a period oftime and support them in this way. I often referpeople on to the Wellbeing and SupportCentre at Woodlands so that they may benefitfrom the services on offer there. It is lovely tobump into them in the café and see themlooking and feeling better because they havehad input from the Hospice. The Hospice is always busy and a hive ofactivity. Christmas was a very busy time: ourtalented doctors Kate and Jamie brought theirchoir in to sing carols for the inpatients, weheld parties and the patients had great fundecorating the ward. They made sure our

doctors’ office was festooned with paperchains and a flashing Christmas tree which keptus feeling festive. The hospice is much moreuplifting than people might think; we often helppatients host birthday parties and celebrateanniversaries. We even organise the occasionalwedding, which is a great privilege and we areglad to be able to do this when requested. At any point in the day I may be contacted byGPs, hospital doctors, district nurses orcommunity nurses asking for advice about theirpatients. This may lead to a home visit if thepatient is unable to travel to the Hospice or awalk across the car park to see a patient in thehospital. Every week I and my colleague Dr JulieRaj meet up with the Community NurseSpecialists and can offer advice to help themmanage their patients’ symptoms in thecommunity. I am often on call overnight andover the weekend, taking turns with Dr Raj toprovide senior medical cover for the SpecialistPalliative Care Service outside of normalworking hours. I can resolve issues over thetelephone usually, but if there is a particularlydifficult situation, I will come in to attend topatients and support staff.

I am also the Lead for Education for theSpecialist Palliative Care Services in ourcatchment area. I feel it is really important thatdoctors, nurses and other healthcareprofessionals know how to manage palliativecare problems such as pain and nausea whenthey are faced with these in their areas of workand so the whole team here at Woodlandstakes this training and education for otherhealthcare professionals very seriously. It isimportant that alongside training for healthcareprofessionals we engage with the general publicso that society as a whole becomes more ableto talk about death and dying, and more peopletalk about what they want for their future andat the end of their lives. I support campaignssuch as Dying Matters, which aims to getpeople talking about these issues in advance.Looking to the future, I would really likePalliative Care to be given equal priority withother health care services so that we cancontinue providing the best service we can forpeople on our patch wherever they are;hospital, Hospice, home or care home. For methe very best part of the job is dealing withpatients and families and also the sheer varietyof challenges I need to address. People moreoften than not want to be at home and part ofmy job is ensuring support is available at homeand intervening to try to avert crises. Peopleoften ask me if the job is sad and depressingand yes it can be, but knowing that we havemade a real difference for a person helps us todeal with the sad times. We can’t change aperson’s situation, but we can make it lessdifficult for them and that is so important. 3

A Day in the Life of...Dr Kate Marley

Woodlands Hospice Clinical Lead and Consultant in Palliative Medicine

Our Family Support Service aimsto reach out to patients and theirloved ones, offering a range ofservices that support patients andthose close to them at what canbe a very difficult and distressingtime. At Woodlands Hospice we know howimportant it is to ensure that patients haveopportunities to let us know what reallymatters to them and their family, and wecan provide an environment to do thiswhich is gentle and caring, recognisingpeople’s individuality.

Family life is very precious, and each familyhas its own unique way of dealing withevents, celebrations, and unexpectedsituations. Here at Woodlands weunderstand how crucial it is to include andinvolve the family in planning care thatmeets the patient’s needs. In developing ourFamily Support Services we hope torespond to family life, and patient’sindividual life style requirements.

For many patients and those closest tothem ‘home is where the heart is’, weacknowledge this and can provide outreach

services directly to your home. Home ismuch more than bricks and mortar, friends, neighbours and the local community allimpact on the way we live our lives. Wevalue this and want to make sure we link into community life, bringing comfort andchoices of how and where patients wantcare to be provided, tailoring this withdignity and respect.

We recognises that children and youngpeople also need to be heard, to be listenedto and be valued for their individuality. Theymay be struggling with news of a familymember or a friend’s diagnosis ordeteriorating health. The Family SupportTeam can provide age appropriate inclusivesupport giving time for young people andchildren to express themselves in a safe, caring environment.

It is with this in mind that our FamilySupport Services work with patients andtheir families. We listen to their concerns, worries and ideas, and work together tomake a difference making the most of life.

The café sells breakfasts, hot lunches, soup, paninis, plenty of homemadecakes and the homemade ‘scouse’gets rave reviews. Patients andrelatives frequent the café and itprovides a safe, friendly environmentto meet and enjoy each other’scompany. Staff and volunteers fromthe hospice also enjoy the good foodand word is spreading fast with manyexternal staff regularly popping in tosample the refreshments.

All the volunteers receive training inHealth & Safety and Food Hygienebefore starting in the café and thenthe rest of the training is ‘on the job’.

Shelley tries to pair up new

The volunteersdon’t just servecustomers
