SaintsPeterandPaularethetwopillarsthatformthefoundationoftheearlyChurch.StoriesoftheirlivesandministryformthebulkoftheNewTestamentoutsideoftheGospels.Peter,ofcourse,wasknownasSimonuntilJesusmethimandchangedhisnameto“Rock.”Becauseofthiscommission,Peterisalwaysdepictedholdingkeys;Jesus’wordsplacehimattheheadofalonglineofpopeswhopreserveapostolicsuccessionandconnecttheChurchtoJesushimself.Intheyear43,apersecutionbrokeoutandPeterwasarrested.TheChurchralliedaroundhim,prayingforhisdeliverance.Thenightbeforehistrial,Peterwasawokenbyanangel,whofreedhimfromhischainsandaccompaniedhimpastthesleepingguardsuntilPeterwasfree(Acts12).TraditionholdsthatPeterwaskilledinalaterpersecutionundertheemperorNero.Wehavenoaccountofhisdeath,butearlyauthorsstatethathewascrucified.Peterfeltunwor-thytodieinthesamemannerastheLord,soheaskedtobecrucifiedupsidedown.Peter’sbodywaslaidtorestatthefuturesiteofSt.Peter’sBasilicaattheVatican.

St.PaulperhapsdidmoretoshapetheChurchthananyotherfigure.Heisknownasthe“apostletotheGentiles”becausehewasthefirsttotakethemessageofJesusbeyondtheJewishcommunity.PaulalsohadadifferentnameuntilheencounteredJesus.HewasknownasSauluntiltherisenLordappearedtohimandinspiredadramaticconversion.Hesufferedgreatlyforhispreaching—atonepointhewasstonedandleftfordead.Hewasar-restedonseveraloccasions,andhewasevenshipwreckedafterbeingarrestedandbeingtransportedtoatrial.Hewaseventuallyarrestedandmartyred—becausehewasaRomancitizen,hewasbeheaded;depictionsshowhimholdingtheswordofhisexecution.

AMessagefromtheMetropolitanArchbishopsoftheCatholicChurchinEnglandre-gardingtheresumptionofcollectiveworshipinEngland:

DearBrothersandsistersinChrist,

GracetoyouandpeacefromGodourFatherandtheLordJesusChrist.

OnTuesdayweheardtheannouncementthat,fromthe4Julythisyear,placesofworshipwillbeabletoreopenforprayerandservices.Wewelcomethisnewswithgreatjoy.Sincethelockdownbegan,membersofallfaithshavefacedrestrictionsonhowtheyhavebeenabletocelebrateimportantreligiousfestivals.OurownexperienceofEasterwasunlikeanyotherwehaveknown.Now,inourchurches,andwithourpeople,wecanlookforwardagaintocelebratingthecentralmysteriesofourfaithintheHolyEucharist.

Therecentreopeningofourchurchesforindividualprivateprayerwasanimportantmile-stoneonourjourneytowardsresumingcommunalworship.Ourchurchesthathaveopenedhaveputinplaceallthemeasuresneededtoensuretherisksofvirustransmissionareminimised.Thisincludeseffectivehandsanitisation,socialdistancing,andcleaning.WeremaincommittedtomakingsurethesesystemsofhygieneandinfectioncontrolmeetGovernmentandpublichealthstandards.

WewanttothankeveryonewithintheCatholiccommunityforsustainingthelifeoffaithinsuchcreativeways,notleastinthefamilyhome.WethankourpriestsforcelebratingMassfaithfullyfortheirpeople,andfortheinnovativewaysinwhichtheyhaveenabledpartici-pationthroughlive-streamingandothermeans.Wearegratefulforthepastoralcareshownbyourclergytothoseforwhomthistimeoflockdownhasbeenespeciallydifficult,and,inparticular,towardsthosewhohavebeenbereaved.Werecognisetoothechaplaincyservicesthathaveplayedavitalroleinsupportingthosemostinneed.Gainingfromtheex-perienceofallthatwehavebeenthrough,andbringingthoselessonsintothefuture,wemustnowlookforward.

Withtheeasingofrestrictionsonworshipwithcongregations,wetreadcarefullyalongthepaththatliesahead.Ourliveshavebeenchangedbytheexperienceofthepandemicanditisclearthatwecannotsimplyreturntohowthingswerebeforelockdown.Weremaincen-tredontheLordJesusandHiscommandattheLastSupperto“dothisinmemoryofme.”WemustnowrebuildwhatitmeanstobeEucharisticcommunities,holdingfasttoallthat

weholddear,whileatthesametimeexploringcreativewaystomeetchangedcircum-stances.

Itisimportanttoreaffirmthat,atpresent,theobligationtoattendSundayMassremainssuspended.Asignificantnumberofchurchesmayremainclosedastheyareunabletomeettherequirementsforopeningforindividualprayer.Fulfillingtheserequirementsisapre-conditionforanychurchopeningafterthe4thJulyforthecelebrationofMasswithacon-gregation.

PleasebeawarethattherewillbealimitonthenumberofpeoplewhocanattendMassinourchurches.Thiswilldeterminedlocallyinaccordancewithsocialdistancingrequire-ments.WethereforeneedtoreflectcarefullyonhowandwhenwemightbeabletoattendMass.Wecannotreturnimmediatelytoourcustomarypractices.Thisnextstepisnot,inanysense,amomentwhenwearegoing‘backtonormal’.

WeaskeveryCatholictothinkcarefullyabouthowandwhentheywillreturntoMass.OurpriestsmayneedtoconsiderwhetheritispossibletocelebrateadditionalMassesattheweekends.GiventhereisnoSundayobligation,weaskyoutoconsiderthepossibilityofat-tendingMassonaweekday.ThiswilleasethepressureofnumbersforSundaycelebrationsandallowagradualreturntotheEucharistformorepeople.

Movingforward,therewillstillbemanypeoplewhocannotattendMassinperson.Wethereforeaskparishes,whereverpossible,tocontinuelive-streamingSundayMass,bothforthosewhoremainshieldingandvulnerable,andalsoforthoseunabletoleavehomebe-causeofadvancedageorillness.

WhenwereturntoMasstherewillsomedifferencesinhowthecelebrationtakesplace.Forthetimebeing,therewillbenocongregationalsingingandMasswillbeshorterthanusual.NoneofthisdetractsfromthecentralityofourencounterwiththeRisenChristintheEu-charist.Weaskeveryonetorespectandfollowtheguidancethatwillbeissuedandthein-structionsineachchurch.

“AsIhavelovedyou,”saidtheLordJesus,“soyoumustloveeachother.”(Jn13:34)Thelockdownhasbroughtforthremarkableactsofcharity,oflovingkindness,fromCatholicsacrossourcommunitiesastheyhavecaredfortheneedyandvulnerable.

Wehaveseenloveinactionthroughcharitableworks,andthroughtheserviceofmanyfront-linekeyworkerswhoaremembersofourChurch.Nowwecanbegintoreturntothe

WhenyoucometochurchforprayerpleaseconsidertheseDOandDON’Tlist: WELCOME to church for private prayer Please follow instructions at all times. If in doubt, please ask. We are allowed to open within strict government guidelines and can be subject to visits by the authorities. Failure to keep the rules is bad for the Church and the Parish and can lead to prosecution and fines. Under health and safety legislation we are required to keep records and have them available for inspection if requested. Please co-operate in providing your name and contact details and contact the Church should you subsequently be diagnosed with Covid-19. This is required as if there is any risk of infection, we are legally obliged to undertake deep cleaning of the premises and notify others present they may be at risk of infection. DO

• Bring and wear your own facemask when you come to church. • Read and obey the instructions from the Diocese on the poster displayed at the entrance • Respect and obey the directions of the Stewards – without their presence today we could

not open for private prayer • Remain seated where a green cross allows you to sit for private prayer • Ensure you take home all your property and this sheet of paper • Ensure any children with you remain by your side at all times and obey the instructions • Ask Stewards to help you if you wish to light any candles, they will place the candles on

the stands and light them for you. Please note the maximum candles permitted is 5 per family

• Place candle money in the basket near the candle stand without touching the basket • Place any parish offerings, planned giving money in an envelope clearly marked with

your number and or name, or any Mass intentions in envelopes with written details in the offering basket as you leave church

• Use kneelers • Change seats during this visit • Say communal prayers, we are only allowed to open for private prayer • Touch statues, stations of the cross, etc • Allow children to run around • Shake hands, hug or touch people, a friendly word or wave is allowed • As to use the toilet, we are unable to open them • Ask to go to the sacristy or flower room, they are out of bounds

StFrancisdeSalesprayer
