CAFOD Salford News

These long summer days are a special time of year. Enjoying our (limited) sunshine, the flowers and the smell of new mown grass, our senses are delighted, and we can rest in the

knowledge that - come all else - our grass is green and the flowers plentiful thanks to the blessing of rain.

Yet across the world others are suffering from a lack of rain. It is hard for us to imagine our land turning to dust, our cattle dying, our store cupboards running empty, the pain of parents seeing their little ones and elders withering from lack of water and nourishment. Do you stay in the hope of things improving? Or do you go now, leaving everything behind to

trust in the mercy and kindness of others who may be able to help. How do you make those life and death decisions?

“Lord when did we see you a stranger and give you food?”

These people in such great need should not be viewed as strangers – these are our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers; we are their family, the family of our God.

CAFOD supporters & parishes across the diocese have responded

quickly and generously to the cry of the people of East Africa for assistance. With your help we have been able to work with local

partners who understand what is going on. One of the greatest strengths of the Catholic Church is that it is in all these regions already. There are priests, catechists and lay people in the church in all these communities, and CAFOD is working with them. It just

takes determination to meet those basic needs.

Chris Bain, CAFOD‟s Director, says: “Every donation is having

an impact on the front line of this crisis. You can literally make the difference between life and death for thousands of people over the coming weeks.”

Come October we will be giving thanks for the harvest and celebrating Harvest Fast Day. You will be aware that the money from Fast Days helps fund our long-term development programmes around the world, which help

Anne Marie Coppock has been CAFOD’s Diocesan Manager in Salford, full-time, since September 2005. She recently decided to go part-time, and so CAFOD advertised for a person to share the job.

We are delighted to welcome Ann Wilson to the Salford team. Ann has been involved with CAFOD for some

years, both as a Schools Volunteer and in a temporary post. Now she will share the CDM post with Anne Marie. Normally, Anne Marie Coppock will work Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday, and Ann Wilson will

work Thursday & Friday. Mary Clark continues as CAFOD’s Diocesan Officer in Salford, normally working on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday.

Ann Wilson writes:

I have been working alongside Anne Marie and Mary now since the end of May and have had the great pleasure of meeting many of you at various events in the diocese and further afield. Although I have not been in post for very long, I have

been touched by the kindness and consideration of the volunteers and CAFOD supporters in our diocese of Salford. You are, indeed, the bedrock of CAFOD Salford and the job is made easy because of you all. I hope to be able to serve and support you as we all endeavour to live out our faith in a way that embraces our sisters and brothers in the developing

world.

The office has been busy recently with a large increase in the number of donations for the East Africa appeal and it has been

a privilege to read some of the notes attached to those donations and see the empathy that CAFOD supporters in Salford are showing, despite the difficult economic situation

that we are burdened with in the UK. In our increasingly secular world, I feel that, by your kind actions, you are showing that there is a different route to follow, one not based on an accumulation of wealth but on care, consideration and love for our fellow human beings wherever they are. I hope to be able to support you as you continue in your work with

CAFOD.

GOING GLOBAL. In our last edition, we invited people to join a monthly course, in partnership with Global Link Lancaster, to look at the complexities of international development. We are

pleased to say that the course is now full, and the first session will be held on 21st September.

Remembering CAFOD in your will is a fantastic way to continue to help people, even after you‟ve gone.

CAFOD has produced a new guide, called “Sowing Seeds of Hope”, that tells you all you need to know about leaving a legacy in your will.

Legacies are incredibly important to us - not simply because they

fund more than a tenth of our work, but also because they provide a solid basis of support for the future of some of the world‟s poorest people.

Out and about

A FEAST OF FOOTBALL.

St Augustine‟s High School,

Billington, was the venue on 18th May for a (first) Sponsored Football Tournament. Competing for a cup, provided by the

Larmenier Retirement Village, were teams from 10 local primary feeder schools.

Congratulations to the team from Ss Michael & John, Clitheroe,

(pictured above) who won the cup – and to everyone who took part and helped organise the event, especially Tom Holt, Head of Sport at St Augustine‟s. The event raised a superb £1085 for CAFOD.

John‟s Primary, Padiham, enjoyed themselves so much that they held their own tournament (left),

raising £655 of the total.

A LUCKY DRAW. During Fairtrade Fortnight this year, the Justice and Peace group at Loreto High School, Chorlton, obtained fair-trade raffle prizes from the

Co-op, and made over £60 for CAFOD by selling tickets to their fellow pupils at lunchtime in the dining hall. Here (right) are two of the lucky winners.

HOT STUFF. Sacred Heart parish in Westhoughton had a terrific success when they

held a cake sale and raffle for CAFOD one weekend in July. It seemed as though every parishioner baked or bought a cake, and the raffle tickets went - well, like hot cakes!

The event, plus a collection, raised over £2300. Thanks. GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS. Members of the CAFOD Action Group at St. Augustine‟s RC High School, Billington, made a tour of seven local parishes during Lent. They spoke

at Sunday Masses at Our Lady & St. Hubert (Great Harwood), St. Wulstan (Great Harwood), St. Mary (Sabden), St. Mary (Langho), St. Charles (Rishton), St. John (Padiham) and St. Philip (Padiham).

The theme of their message was CAFOD‟s latest campaign „Get Down to Business‟. This highlights the efforts of many individuals in developing countries who are struggling to start small businesses to provide for their families. Andrew Mitchell,

Secretary of State for International Development, is being urged to direct money, that the UK Government already spends in its “Aid for Trade” budget, into small businesses.

Small businesses can be a lifeline for the millions of poor men and women who run them. They can help people in poverty

get meaningful work, earn their own wage, and thereby regain their dignity.

Parishioners were invited to sign CAFOD‟s campaign cards (left), which have been sent via school to Mr Mitchell.

Campaign Update

TEATIME FOR CHANGE. Eight CAFOD

supporters from Manchester joined the Lobby of MPs at Westminster on 9th June. They went to talk to the 4 Manchester MPs about international development issues.

For Hannah Steele (pictured 2nd left), this was her first taste of such a lobby. Hannah had taken a supply of iced cupcakes

to serve with a cup of tea to her MP. Hannah writes:

We set up our table and laid out my cupcakes which were iced with messages such as 'Love CAFOD, Hate Poverty', 'A Time to Change', 'Stop Tax dodging' and 'We Heart Robin Hood Tax‟. As soon as we had set the tea table, lots of people starting coming over to have a look at my cupcakes and before I knew

it I was being interviewed on camera about why I had chosen to travel down to London for the day and what I hoped could be achieved as a result. I also got to meet lots of people from CAFOD's

Head Office. Some of them wanted personalised iced cupcakes, so I pulled out some plain cupcakes and got icing. I even got a free CAFOD t-shirt in exchange

for an iced cupcake!

At 2pm, John Leech, our MP for Manchester Withington, turned up. John shared tea and cupcakes with five of us from his constituency and listened as we presented our views. John was very much for the idea of ring-fencing 0.7% of GNP for development aid, and he was also in favour of an innovative

way of raising funds for development through a Robin Hood tax, which would deliver a tax on the financial sector. He also

listened to our concerns about the lack of tax transparency of companies working in developing countries and how people and governments in some these countries were kept in the

dark about companies‟ profits and, as a consequence, were losing out on tax revenues.

All in all, I had a fantastic day and felt really inspired to continue the campaign that Tea Time for Change started. I had the chance to meet people, from all over the UK, who are passionate about tackling global injustice and helping the

voices of the poor to be heard.

ACT AND PRAY FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE

gathers in Manchester for its annual conference, you are invited to join us on Saturday 1st October for a CAFOD “Campaign Energiser” - an afternoon of

inspiring talks & workshops at Salford Cathedral Centre, 3 Ford St, Salford M3 6DP, 12-4pm.

Speakers include Chris Bain.

Then we will be joining

with supporters of Christian Aid and Tearfund at 5pm for a joint ecumenical service in Manchester Cathedral, before walking in candlelit procession to the Conservative Party conference venue to take our message &

prayers to party leaders. 7.30pm finish.

Letter from Ethiopia

Mary Clark has spent six weeks this summer in Ethiopia, with 2 volunteers from CAFOD & Trocaire, on a project run by nuns in Mekele, and helping to teach some of the local children

English. Mary has been sending a weekly letter back home to keep her family and colleagues up to date on her progress. Here are a few extracts:

We are getting more used to being stared at wherever we go! Little children shout „faranji‟, meaning „foreigner‟. Paula is good at making sure

we don‟t get charged „faranji‟ prices. We are much more familiar with the geography of the town, the animals on the road and the street sellers - including lots of

young boys trying to make their „birr‟ by cleaning shoes or with weighing scales.

We bumped into „Dani‟, one of the older boys on the project, and a great example of the transformation brought about by the work of the Daughters of Charity here. He was found on

the streets as a very young boy and spent time living on the project. He is now at school and hoping to pass his 10th grade.

It is now Sunday and it has continued to rain even through the night, but this is unusual; it has been very sunny with occasional bursts of rain most days. So we begin a new week. We pray that it will be a good one, and that our efforts will be

right for the children. We will be preparing them for an excursion next Saturday to Africa‟s highest hydro-electric dam, about 3 hours drive away. Should be fun!

When we first set up the 6 CATs (CAFOD Action Teams) in early 2010, we said the arrangements would be flexible. Nearly 2 years on, we have reviewed the position, and want to make a

change. 4 of the CATs are working well together, but Central & South West CATs have had some problems. Central has turned out to be too geographically disconnected, and we have not been able to find a lead person in South West.

So we want to replace the existing South West and Central CATs by a new South West CAT (mainly

comprising the Salford and Trafford districts) and a new West CAT (combining Bolton and Bury districts). We hope that these new boundaries will produce more cohesive team areas.

There is a meeting on 12th September at St Ann‟s Parish Hall, 1043 Chester Road, Stretford M32 8LF, starting 7.30pm, to which all our supporters from the 2 previous Central & South

West CATs are invited. We will share with you the new map and our hopes for the future.

But the main focus of the meeting will be a report to update you on CAFOD‟s emergency work in Haiti following the 2010 disaster and also on the present situation in East Africa.

RIDE THE LIGHTS. On Tuesday 30th August, between 7pm & 10pm, starting on Blackpool Promenade, you could join Team CAFOD and ride your

bike through the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations. Ride the Lights is not a bike race - it's a fun and free bike ride open to all cyclists. Under 16s are welcome, if accompanied by an adult. Enjoy the lights, and raise funds to help sink boreholes in Ethiopia at the same time. There are 20 places available, and each entrant

is asked to try and raise £50 in sponsorship. To register, phone CAFOD Lancaster on 01772-733310 or email Lancaster@cafod.org.uk.

CAMINO WALK. Fred Uttley from the North East CAT wants to organise a small group of people to do part of the Camino walk this year in September. The group would fly out on 20th

September and return on 28th September. A vehicle will be hired to reach the starting point, 100km from Santiago de Compostela. Cost is estimated at around £450. For more information, please contact Fred on 01282-773032.

GREAT NORTH RUN. Three of our supporters from Salford Diocese - Andrew Kelly, Kathy McNicholas and Justin Pasteiner

- are taking part in the Great North Run in Newcastle on 18th September. Best wishes to all three.

LONDON MARATHON - 22nd April 2012. For charity runners, this is the best marathon in the world, and is incredibly popular. Every year, it draws half a million spectators to the

streets, and 5 million watch the race on TV. CAFOD has places available and is currently taking applications on-line at www.cafod.org.uk. Applicants will be contacted in early October to tell them whether they have been successful. For a CAFOD place, runners must pay a £100 registration fee, then

commit to raising £2500 in sponsorship.

Recycling

Since 2009, you have raised £190 for CAFOD by recycling your old ink cartridges and mobile phones. This is fantastic and, to increase the amount raised, we have sent you an

envelope with this newsletter to encourage you and your friends to continue to do this. If you have no ink cartridges or mobile phones to recycle, PLEASE pass the envelope on to someone who can use it.

If your school or parish would like a large box to collect LOTS of phones and cartridges, please contact the office (0161-705 0605), or email to salford@cafod.org.uk.

Thank you so much for this. It is a great way to raise funds

without digging into your own pockets.

GIVE US YOUR UNWANTED FOREIGN COINS. What do you do with foreign coins that you bring back from trips

abroad? You probably lose them.

But now CAFOD is running a Foreign Coin Recycling scheme. Working with a specialist company, we can collect your

coins and repatriate them to their country of origin (for maximum value), and get a fair commission that makes it worthwhile.

You can send your coins (tightly wrapped in a jiffy bag) to

the office, or bring them to any CAFOD event. Every time we reach 5kg of coins in weight, we will send them to be shipped back to be changed into sterling.

CAFOD‟S 50th ANNIVERSARY. Mass of Thanksgiving at

Westminster Cathedral on Saturday 28th January 2012, with many bishops of England & Wales. All past & present Salford volunteers are invited to join us for this unique celebration. Let us know if you are interested - we may take a coach.
