PSHEE D.O.T. DAYS FOR YEAR 8 AND YEAR 9

On Monday 25th April, Year 8 students took part in a PSHEE day. Students watched a performance by the fabulous LOUDMOUTH Theatre Group and then took part in a workshop with the actors. The rest of the day was based around the key themes of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE). Year 9 had a very similar day on Tuesday 26th April. Safe Squad/Vivo Ambassadors

At Telford Park we have recently launched a team of safe Squad mentors. The safe squad are a group of young people who are there for our pupils to talk to should they have any concerns regarding their own safety or the safety of others. The group recently undertook a training session with The Telford Langley School Safe Squad run by Mr Preece Deputy Headteacher. The training involved looking at scenarios and how they would be handled plus procedures for passing on their concerns.

Bridge Centre

The Bridge Centre are taking part in the ‘Rocket Science’ seeds from space project which is running across

schools nationwide. This is an experiment looking at whether seeds that have been in space grow differently to

those that haven’t, and we are all very excited to be working with something that has been up in space! Look

out for updates in the next newsletter!

Nurture

Students currently using the nurture room have been busy potting up some impatiens plants ( busy lizzies). Courtney Taylor, Toni-Leigh Whiting, Tammy Tarpey and Courtney Ball are now going to nurture these plants into brilliant, colourful blooms for the summer. The plugs, compost and trays have all been provided as part of the Shrewsbury Flower Show Floral Train and will be planted into troughs in the coming weeks and taken to the Shrewsbury showground in June. They will then be on display in all their glory at the Shrewsbury Flower Show in August with the name of the school attached.

Please find below the extra curricular information for different subjects after schools.

This can also be found on our website

The Telford Park School SEND department are pleased to welcome Mrs Creen to the team. She will be working in school every morning across all year groups and is really looking forward to getting to know all our students.

Homework club is still available to anyone who needs a quiet place to complete their homework. Laptops and internet access is available as well as two members of staff. It is currently running on a Tuesday and Wednesday after school (2.35 – 3.35) in A3.59.

Our students are fully embracing our drive to embrace a reading

culture at Telford Park School and it has been an absolute pleasure to

see them engrossed in their books during READ45.

KS3 families recently received a detailed Reading Diagnostic Report in

the Student’s report which outlined their reading age and their ZPD

(which stands for Zone of Proximal Development).

All KS3 now undertake regular computerised STAR tests which auto-

matically calculates their reading age and a range of books the stu-

dent can read which will stretch and challenge them. All KS3 students

then take an online quiz for their book and their percentage accuracy

is generated immediately for them.

All KS3 students regardless of ability and reading age have the same

target of 85% as they are all reading books within their ZPD.

If you wish to review the students Accelerated Reader account to

discuss the books they have read, monitor their progress and their

percentage accuracy then please go onto our website, select Quick

Links and then select Accelerated Reader Home Connect.

The log in details were posted home in February however, it is the student’s login and password which they all (should) know. If they cannot remember please email me at [email protected] and I will provide you with it. If you would like more information regarding our Literacy Pro-

grammes please visit our website and under the title of Literacy Pro-

grammes is more information relating to Accelerated Reader and

Corrective Reader.

Finally, please follow @readingatPARK on Twitter for regular tweets.

Art

This last few weeks has seen a huge effort from Art students to complete their coursework. Pupils have done their exam and have put the final touches to coursework creating some amazing hat sculptures. Well done for all of your hard work year 11’s, once again, you have done us proud.

Keep posted for the GCSE Art exhibition where you will be astounded by the quality of work on display……coming soon!

This month also saw the results of the Rotary Young Photographer of The Year competi-tion. Mariah Lamb took part in the competition and submitted of her photographs into the competition. At a presentation evening at Enginuity we discovered that Mariah has been successfully chosen to enter the Rotary District Young Photographer Final!

The entries will be judged at the beginning of June with a presenta-tion evening on Tue 28 Jun 2016 at Denstone College, Uttoxeter so fingers crossed for Mariah and her continued success with photog-raphy.

Research Project for the Y9s at Park Over the last half term some Y9s have been conducting a research pro-ject within their group. They first of all created a questionnaire and then analysed the results using Excel and then devised a presentation to summarise the results. They were able to use graphs and music to enhance their presentations. Although the students were somewhat nervous at the start of their presentations each one grew with confidence and gave a fabulous perfor-mance of their analyses

Departmental news

We have now moved onto summer sports for most in PE lessons. However, the boys are still receiving 1 lesson of rugby a fortnight to

keep their skills up ready for next year.

We have also had a very popular new club started on Tuesday’s – Handball. This is being run by The Shropshire Handball Association.

Following the first session, 2 students (Sandra Amo and Chloe Leigh Growcott) were asked to go forward for trials for the county

team that is being set up. Watch this space for how they got on.

Girls Fitness!

A huge well done to Mrs Perry’s PE girls for the improvements made in their fitness tests. A special mention to the following who

have gained some great Bleep Test scores:

Mollie Perks level: 10.4, Rhianna Nicholls 10.2, Holly Halford 10.0 & Chloe-Leigh Growcott 12.11

Rugby

At the end of last term over 40 boys attended the RFU All Schools festival at Telford Hornets Rugby Club.

They played against all the other local “All Schools” Schools – Telford Priory, Telford Langley & HLC. Tel-

ford Park played some great rugby and demonstrated how far they have come over the last 2 terms. The

yr 9/10 team won all their games. The yr 7/8 team won 3 out of 5.

We have already got several fixtures booked in for next year when we hope to build on the progress we

have made this year!

Football

Thursday’s football club is proving very popular and students have been improving their skills with the help of Steve & his team from

Double Touch Coaching.

The Yr 10 team played in their Plate Cup match last week against Thomas Telford ‘C’ team. They played well in the first half but unfor-

tunately Thomas Telford showed their class and won the game.

Netball

Mrs Perry, Mrs Jolly, Mrs France & Mrs Jones have all been wowed by the attendance and attitude of the girls taking part in the net-

ball club. Keep it up girls!

Athletics

As we are now in the summer term the inter school athletics competitions will be on from May. See the school TV screens for the

dates and ensure you show us your best in PE lessons! We will be picking the

teams over the next few weeks!

Ski Trip

14 lucky Telford Park school students accompanied Mr Phillips on the school ski

trip during the penultimate week of the spring term. They went to Risoul, France.

The students had a fantastic time and all left the mountains competent skiers and

with some interested tans!! See the pictures attached.
