NEWSLETTER Summer 2017
As you will see from this final newsletter of 2017-2018 it has been a busy and
successful year here at The Telford Park School. Over the last two weeks we
have celebrated a variety of successes. Our annual awards evening and
Reading Oscar ceremony were both well attended by staff, students and
parents alike, it was wonderful to see so much pride on the faces of all.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our superb staff for all of their
hard work this academic year, it is down to their passion and dedication
coupled with the student’s hard work that enables the students to be the best
they can be.
Other recent amazing events have included our Year 11 Prom held at the
Madeley Court Hotel on 30th June, the students (and staff) looked stunning
and had a fabulous time. On Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th July we held our
Year 6 transition days, our new students fitted straight into
The Telford Park School and demonstrated intelligence, hard work, optimism
and enthusiasm.
I wish you all a happy, relaxing and safe Summer holiday. We look forward to
welcoming our students back on Tuesday 5th September at 8.25am.

More Homework Please!
The largest component of the homework system for Years 7, 8 and 9 is currently the Independent Learning Project or ILP. These projects are available to download on the school website and lots of pupils have taken advantage of this opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge with plenty of ViVOs being issued as a reward. To develop homework even further we have invested in an online system called ‘SAM Learning’. This approach provides teachers with the ability to allocate a variety of award winning tasks to pupils to extend their learning and target areas for improvement. Each time a pupil completes an activity their teacher can check how long they have spent on the task and how well they have done. If pupils don’t score 100% first time they can try the activity twice more. Pupils can also use the ‘Activities’ page to complete Not only will SAM Learning help pupils make progress academically, but there are also points to be won along the way. There is a leader board that pupils can opt in to or out of and they can select ‘buddies’ to track their progress compared to their friends. Your child is already able to logon to this system and can start using this straight away. Following these steps:
Log on to www.samlearning.com Enter Centre ID: TF3LS2 Enter User ID:
The username is made up of the pupil’s initials and their birthday in six-digit format. For example, if you were born on 27 September 2007 and your name is Robert Jones it would be: 270907RJ
Click ‘Sign in’. Pupils are welcome to complete these activities at home on a PC, tablet or smartphone. They can also stay after school and attend one of the homework club sessions where computers are available for their use. Since 1994, SAM Learning has been improving grades, adding value and raising student attainment in schools across the UK. These successes have grown and in 2016 SAM Learning has was given the Bett Award for Best Secondary Digital Content. To find out more about SAM Learning please go to www.samlearning.com.

Reading is indispensable to learning and those who read – succeed!
Our Accelerated Reading and Corrective Reading programmes provide all our KS3 students with the
opportunity to not only enable them to increase their reading levels to have a positive impact on all
areas of the curriculum but to also increase their enjoyment of books.

two afternoon teas, over three thousand Vivos and finally The Accelerated Reader Oscars on Thursday

On Monday and Tuesday last week we met the Year 6 students who will be joining us at Telford Park in
September. The students followed a timetable for the two days where they experienced all of the
different lessons. From creating snakes in Science, Super Heroes in English and Minecraft E-Safety with the
Tablet Academy.
The Students found out which house they belonged to and met their tutors and tutor groups where
welcome cards were given out. Lunch time was a success! The students thoroughly enjoyed the food on
offer, especially the Slushies!
And then outside for football, table tennis or just running around. They all met their parents at the door
with smiles on their faces and I quote from one young Randlay student, “I’ve had the time of my life.” We
look forward to greeting them on September 5th looking smart in their uniforms ready for an exciting year
at Telford Park.
Transition Project
Two weeks ago we were fortunate enough to host a year 5 science project with Grange Park Primary
school. We had two different classes split into two groups who came for a day to experiment with Moon
Landings.
The year 5’s had extensive knowledge about space and the moon so after all the questions were answered
the challenge was set: How to land three marshmallows (Astronauts) using only straws, papers, a plastic
cup, mini marshmallows and sellotape?
The student’s designs were fantastic but the real test was if their astronauts (marshmallows) survived and
didn’t fall out. Much fun was had dropping them from the balcony to see if they survived. The students
had a great time and were wonderfully behaved.
On Tuesday 4th July five Year 9 pupils attended a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)
Challenge day at Shrewsbury 6th Form College. Pupils were split up into groups and completed 3
activities. The first activity involved designing, building and then racing a small motor car, the second
activity involved making a robot and programming it to navigate a series of obstacles and the final
activity involved using police software to create an E-FIT of a ‘criminal’. Pupils were only given 50
minutes to complete each activity so team work was an essential part of the day. Pupils from
Telford Park School came second in the robot activity and first in the E-FIT activity. When asked about
their day pupils responded very enthusiastically saying that they found it fun, interesting and
challenging. Pupils also said that they would recommend the challenge day to other pupils as it was a
good way to learn new skills.
Year 10 Geography Field Trip Students headed off on foot to observe and learn about the locality of Stirchley....in the rain!
Stirchley has such a rich heritage.
From a Norman church to farming and village life...to quarrying for clay to supply the iconic china works of the Industrial Revolution.....to housing Japanese business people and local factory workers....and most recently a £14 million primary and secondary educational facility built next door to a nature reserve and recreation field. Seen through fresh eyes and supported by Mr. Mottrams guidance and local knowledge, Year 10 students are now fully equipped for the next stage of GCSE Geography.
Cameron and Kiya Price have been fundraising in their own time and raised over £300 during one weekend. They will continue for the rest of the year to raise more for Acorns Children's Hospice. Previously, they have raised: £2500 for Hope House, £3500 of new equipment for the children's ward at RJAH hospital £2100 for Make a Wish Foundation.
They are also planning a big charity show for next year.
We think their achievements are amazing!
James Luo in Yr 10 took part in the 131st Wenlock Olympian Games badminton competition on Saturday 8th July. He played in the doubles and the singles tournament and won GOLD in both events. A huge well done to James. This is the result of a lot of hard work and dedication from James. He trains up to 6 days a week to reach the level he has. We look forward to seeing how he gets on next year in the district.
We have had a fantastic term of PE at The Telford Park School. Within lessons students have been

Graffiti Art
Year 10's had a go at graffiti and spray paint art, producing some really exciting experiments for possible final piece designs. They experimented with mixing colours, different spray effects and using templates in the style of graffiti artist Banksy. Well done year 10's, let the fun of year 11 begin!!
Year 10 Art Mock Exam
Year 10 pupils have done really well in their first Art exam showing that preparation is everything! Pupils had designed their final outcomes and were really confident going in to the exam producing some fantastic work. I have included a selection of some of the pieces here but we will also be doing an exhibition to show off all of their lovely work.
Year 7 Abstract Paintings
All year 7 pupils have been working very hard to finish their own abstract painting in the style of the painter, Wassily Kandinsky. pupils have designed an individual piece of work that is based on their own emotions and personalities and have used only shapes and colours to represent who they are. All of the paintings will be displayed around school together to produce larger pieces. This collective piece of work will represent the wonderful individual characters we have at The Telford Park School and how we all come together to produce one large beautiful team.
