Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards for the Cambridge IGCSE and AS and A Level June 2013
On 28th November an Award Ceremony was held by Cambridge International Examinations to recognise the Outstanding Cambridge Learners in Malaysia. This year there were four exceptional learners from Tenby International School, one more than in 2012.
Nozomi Oishi, our Y13 student was awarded the Top in Malaysia for AS Level Geography. We are very proud of this achievement as Nozomi is a student from our first A Level cohort.
The second award went to Chloe Tang Ruen Yi, a current Y11 student who also received the Top in Malaysia award for IGCSE Mathematics (without coursework).
The next award was for Tan Li Syen (currently in the UK) for High Achievement for IGCSE Physical Education. In 2012, Li Syen also won the award for Top in Malaysia award for IGCSE Mathematics (without coursework). This is the second time
(last year this award went to Justen Lee Yikai) Tenby Setia Eco Park has received this award.
Finally, Ilona Clayton received the award for High Achievement for an outstanding performance in IGCSE German. Only a small number of candidates take IGCSE PE and German hence the award title of High Achievement.
Last year more than one million students sat Cambridge examinations in more than 9000 schools in countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, United States, China, India, Singapore and Malaysia, as well as throughout Europe, South America and the Middle East. Therefore, we commend these four students for their achievements and we congratulate them, their teachers and their families for their dedication and hard work.

SIXTH FORM VISIT TO THE KUALA LUMPUR INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW WHICH WAS HELD AT
THE PUTRA WORLD TRADE CENTRE
On the 20th November, we went to the KL motor show.
There were cars high and low, big and small, racing ones and
trucks to actual camping cars and a full electronic car with the
outside as a massive LED screen fit to the car’s shape!
The KL motor show was an experience, and we would love to
go and experience it again, maybe this time there would be
some more interesting cars that we could test out.
Some of the innovative cars we looked at were the Nissan Leaf
which was a hundred per cent electrical car and was small, the
Hyundai EV ester which was an electric sports car which could
travel up to 700 km an hour with only producing 45g per km of
carbon dioxide emissions and the Toyota fun car which was
probably the most ingenious car there. This car was a hundred
per cent zero emissions, it could be easily charged as if fitting your phone into your charger and in Toyota ’s words,
“Changing the look of the car was as easy as changing your Facebook status”.
Looking at these cars made us realise how fast the world is changing and developing. The level of technology
astounded us as well as the amount of thought and processes these cars had to go through to be fit for show. There
were Thunderbirds and Bolts from the 50’s to 80’s; it really was a sight
to see. Those cars were such prized items to be showcased and so rare
in the world today.
Overall, our visit to the KL motor showcase was a great one. We
learned many things about cars, the value of actually producing some
of the cars in the world today, eco –friendly solutions, the different
electronic uses that can be put to a car and how much electronics and
motor vehicles cross paths to make some of the most innovative and
interesting cars seen to date.

Primary English Language Week 2014
The week beginning of Monday 10th February was a week of fun and excitement. For many it was an
opportunity to display their talents. A variety of language activities were planned for all levels and all
students with no exceptions, took part in the activities. The preliminary rounds were carried out in their
respective classes and the finalists performed in front of an audience with great confidence.
Through these competitions it is hoped that awareness is created among students on the importance of
upgrading themselves in English language. It would also serve as a catalyst for students to start using and
learning English in a more serious manner.
The objectives of the Primary English activities are:
To inculcate interest in the English language among the pupils.
To practice self-discipline in acquiring essential language skills.
To nurture positive attitude towards given task among the pupils.

Secondary English Language Week 2014
This year’s Language week activities took place the week of Monday 10th February. Competition such as,
storytelling, poetry recitals, presentation on National Patriots, drama competitions and debate took place for
English Language classes throughout the week. Students had a great exposure to explore emotions, opinions
and relationships, hence to accommodate these abstract concepts more readily by representing them in a
more concrete form. Moreover, the activities were themed according to their literature component, thus
leading to deeper understanding of poetic devices. Congratulations to all the winners. The presentation of
prizes (book vouchers) and certificates will be held during the assembly in the week beginning Monday 3 rd
March.

Weekly English Day on Thursdays
Reading is important for a variety of reasons. One of the fundamental reasons is that reading develops the
mind. Reading is also a method of discovering new things and adding value to our knowledge base. For the
benefit of our students, we have organized a day where the whole school reads. This activity is carried out
every Thursday in the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) from 12:40 to 13:10hrs. Students are to bring their own
reading material; in the form of an article or a novel.
How do we track students’ reading? Well, each student will be given a reading review slip, where they have
to complete it once they have read the article or the novel. For every five (5) reading review slips collected,
one (1) merit point will be awarded to the student. All these merit points will be accumulated for Gold
certificates to be awarded at the end of the year during the PSEC graduation ceremony and Superstar Awards
ceremony. We hope to see students gaining the most from this reading program. According to Ernest
Hemingway - “There is no friend as loyal as a book.”

Primary Student Led Conferences
On Friday 14th February, TIS Primary held its first ever Student Led Conferences (SLCs). We decided to move away
from the old style Parent Teacher Conferences (PTCs) to SLCs for a number of reasons:
Student Led Conferences are another way to encourage children to reflect on what they have learnt and
develop their ability to articulate their learning.
They support our Core Values of lifelong learning and effective communication.
They encourage students to be actively involved in their learning journey, whilst developing their leadership
and communication skills and developing self-confidence.
They support open and honest dialogue between teachers, students and parents.
Staff and children had been preparing for these conferences since the New Year, getting the Pupil Portfolios ready
and role-playing the conference. The children already knew the National Curriculum level in which they were
working. To help the children understand the language of each level, we provided the children with friendly
versions of each level, known as ‘I can…’ statements. We then planned reflection time in lessons where the
children self-assessed, finding examples of work reflecting the ‘I can…’ statements.
By ticking off each statement as they achieved it, the children could clearly see what they still had to do in order
to achieve their expected level. This enabled the children to decide upon their own targets. Having ownership of
their learning targets will encourage the children to work harder to achieve them and puts the children in charge
of their own learning journey.
Many of you whom we spoke to on the day stated how impressed you were that the children could so clearly
explain their own strengths and weaknesses. Most of you were impressed by the signs of leadership your child
demonstrated and some of you enjoyed seeing actual evidence to support what your child was telling you.
As with any new initiative, there were a few teething problems: a few children became unusually shy during their
conference and needed prompting to speak; because the children wanted to show you so much, some of you ran
out of time; there were long queues to see specialist teachers.
We have already held an evaluation session with staff on how we can improve the process for Term 3. We will
shortly be sending parents a survey of the day to get your input on ways to improve this new initiative. The
Primary Leadership team will then collate the feedback and plan some changes to make our Student Led
Conferences even better than before.

Primary Art
Pop Art, Pop Music and Pop up Drama.
The Art exhibition was a fantastic display of work created solely by Year 9 students who had studied Pop Art & Experimental Painting & Screen Printing in Term 1. There were bright colours, vivid designs, recognisable images drawn from popular media and products. The visitors enjoyed celebrity spotting in the many amazing screen prints. Harry Styles and Liam were there!
An array of wonderful hoodies created in Design Technology demonstrated the versatility of our students as well as two fabric patchworks which were a montage of various Pop Art patterns and colour creative textile techniques.
Add in the drama - students popped up around the venue to perform short dramas inspired by song lyrics and asked the guests those as yet unanswered questions, “Do you know the way to San Jose?” and “Is this the way to Amarillo?”
The event was enlivened by performances by the school’s resident bands with students from Year 8 to Year 12 strumming guitars and bashing drums tunefully and rhythmically respectively.
The event was also to celebrate the opening of the EPC, Exhibition & Performance Centre, and to wish Mr Robert Lloyd our retiring CEO the best of luck as he moves on from Tenby into the world of retirement.

Result Tenby 3-2 AISM
After a slow start which saw AISM take the lead the Tenby boys
started to find their feet and dominated the half. There were
some great performances by Muiz and Zohiir in the first half.
Tenby came off the pitch at half time 2-1 in front thoroughly
deserving their lead. They continued in the same way in the
second half extending their lead to 3-1 before a late goal by
AISM made it a nervy finish. In the end Tenby were well worth
their victory and all the boys out in a huge effort and were
