From the Principal

As Mr Edgcumbe would say “the place was rockin’” and this week it was all down to a visit from the Orroroo Area School music students who performed for our students during Wednesday lunch time. Our students had a go too and it was great to see everyone listening along as the bands belted out some tunes under the shade of the outdoor kitchen area. Thank you to Mr Custance from Orroroo and Mr Edgcumbe for enabling this shared experience to happen, hoping that BCDS can return the favour and visit OAS for a return performance. Staff at the kindy enjoyed listening from a distance too! Thanks also to Mr Glayde for being the “roadie” moving equipment around.

This week the ongoing shearing course is on again! Much appreciation to Howard Bastian for allowing students to shear his sheep and for the time and effort he has put in to get sheep to the yards in workable numbers and changing sheep over when shorn. Well done Mrs Kupke for the organisation of the course, the help of Mr Glayde and TAFE for providing an instructor. Keep an eye out for the next advertised course at BCDS.

This week we learned that Mr Ben Muggleton has won a position as SACE Achievement Officer for the Mid North schools. This is a promotion for Ben and we congratulate him on his success and wish him and his family well in his new venture. We will still see Ben on site from time to time in his new role as he works with SACE Coordinators and teachers. We are currently in the process of finding a replacement for him.

The 3 Way Learning Conferences (3WLC) and primary teacher/parent interviews

have come to a close this week, with reports for SACE students (year 11 and 12)

coming out next week.

Kindy News This week we explored our own backyard! We went on a picnic to the Booleroo Centre Complex and played on their new playground. After our big walk up to the oval we were lucky enough to be shown some very old tractors in the shed. Thank you to Ian McCallum for opening the shed for the Kindy and Rural Care children. After our picnic lunch we had a great time playing in the cubby house and swinging on the swings. Before we left to walk home again, we went on a nature hunt for some natural items to bring back to Kindy for our making table. We found gumnuts, curly bark, feathers, pine cones and much more! Safe to say they all slept well that night!

AIE's Industry Experience Days are a great opportunity for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to learn about the local and international game development, 3D animation and visual effects industries. Students will get the opportunity to learn about the different pathways to get into the industry, what should be in a portfolio and will be able to get creative in practical workshops using industry-standard 3D animation and game development tools.

Shearing School

This week, TAFESA have been conducting shearing and wool handling courses in the Pichi Richi Trade Training Centre – ‘The Shearing Shed’. We are hoping to continue this as an annual event in Week 10, Term 1. There is a possibility for another shearing school in September.. depending on the availability of sheep, and numbers of applicants for the course.

Applicants have come from around our region, and we hope they have enjoyed their training.

Thanks to everyone who has helped with the set up of the course – in particular to Glenn Haynes (instructor), Jackie Falland (TAFESA, and a relative of Ian Collins) and Howard Bastian for the ‘loan’ of 250 sheep. Thanks to Russell (our groundsman), Harry and Barney who helped too! We are really happy to have the opportunity to offer this experience in our region.

We are looking forward to seeing participants in shearing sheds around the place in the future. Check out the

photographs on our facebook page.

Learning Conferences

This week, we held our Learning Conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Thank you to the students

who prepared their conversations to share with us, and the parents who took time out to participate in this

learning experience for their children. Also, thank you to the teachers who mentored the students in their groups.

We really appreciate the support that is given to the school when trialling programs we believe to be beneficial for

the students. Teachers enjoy the opportunity to have this interaction, and to get to know the students, also.

There will be a survey distributed shortly so that parents can provide feedback on this process.

Students will have access to a feedback report in their Pathways folder, once they have been processed. If you

would like to see this information, please ask your child to bring their Pathways folder home in the following

weeks.
