Oh No! It’s a skunk!

We have had several sightings of skunks in the neighborhoods recently. While they might be cute they are wild animals and can make life very uncomfortable is you get too close. Below is an article provided by Doug Johns, FHA’s Director of Maintenance, that will help you keep those stinky animals away.

How to Get Rid of Skunks - Wikihow Edited by Carolyn Barratt, Tarun Parwani, Maluniu, BR and 7 others

Methods: Remove the Skunks' Food and Shelter

While skunks are generally harmless creatures, it's best not to get to close to them. You risk getting a dose of their noxious spray. Skunks are omnivores that can live off of human waste, so they often take up residence in yards and under decks and hiding places. Learn how to make your property less enticing to skunks who need a

home.

1 Remove food sources. Skunks are scavengers, so they'll eat anything nutritious they can find. Use a tray un-der your bird feeder to catch most of the seeds, and clean up stray seeds dropped by birds often. 2 Protect your waste. Similarly to raccoons and other stray animals, skunks can survive on garbage alone. It's important to keep your trash cans properly sealed. Use an enclosed container, since skunks like to eat old fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells, and other items that you may be disposing of. Do not throw food waste on the ground.

3. Call the Franklin Housing Authority office. We have set out a few traps recently to attempt to capture and remove the skunks.

Back to School Event

You are invited to join area churches for a concert and back to school event. The event is

planned to show our children they are loved and supported as they head back to school.

Come out and enjoy entertainment from several of the area churches including choirs, gospel

rappers and praise dancers. There will also be food provided, games for the children and

school supplies available for those that need them.

Mark your calendars for:

Residents’ Council Message

This month’s residents’ meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 12th at 5:00 in the Tulip Poplar Room located at the FHA Community Center. Residents’ meetings are one way for residents to voice their opinion on issues that affect their quality of life and community. The monthly resi-dents’ meetings are also a great way to get involved in our neighbor-hoods and community by participating in activities, programs and events that will educate, empower or just make you feel good about changes in FHA. We hope to see you at the meeting this month.

Residents’ Game Night is getting better and better each week. For the residents that par-ticipate, it is more than just winning prizes. It’s about reconnecting with a neighbor, laugh-ing with an old or new friend and if you were to ask the Game Night Players, we’re sure that they would say, it’s the whole experience. We would also like to thank those residents that are truly supporting this activity by bringing food and setting up the room for game night. Without you this would not be happening. Again, thank you. We would name you but there are so many, we just don’t have the room. So if you are looking for a few hours of stress relief and fun….. Then come on down!

The Residents’ Council would like to thank Pastor Chris and OneGenAway for making Movie Night a reality. It’s our honor and privilege to have partners with so much love for our community. We hope to continue partnering with OneGenAway in making our commu-nity stronger. If you missed Movie Night, Game Night or need information on Residents’ Council events or activaties, please give us a call at 794-1247 extension 208. Also for pictures of events and more like us on Facebook, at FHA Residents’ Council

Thank you, Calvin Scruggs, FHARC, President

Tips to help your child succeed in school

With school back in session, parents play a major role in the success of their children in school. If you communicate firm and realistic standards and set up a home climate that contributes to positive achievement, your child will be more successful. Below are some other tips to help you and your child.

Establish a daily routine. Wake your child up every day at the same time and eat breakfast to-gether. Enforce the same bedtime. Children may not admit it but they crave structure.

Healthy bodies, healthy minds. Make sure your child has had all the regular physical exams and proper immunizations including regular dental, eyesight and hearing checkups.

Nutrition. The brain can be as little as 2% of body weight, yet it uses as much as 20% of the body’s energy. Proper nutrition gives your child the fuel to maximize energy and to perform well physically and mentally. Avoid junk food and encourage more fruits, vegetables and milk.

Exercise. Another way to supply the brain with energy is through exercise. Exercise seems to help activate brain chemicals for better attention and memory and is dissipates the “wiggles” that strike so many children when they have to sit for long periods.

Set goals with your child. All A’s may not be realistic for all children. Discuss specific goals for grades in each subject and go beyond grades to ask what your child is hoping to learn in school. Write these goals down and save them in a special place.

Agree on a specific time for studying. Schedule a set time each day for homework. Some children do better when working in short stretches including breaks. Help them develop a homework “to do” list that will keep them on track.

Start the year out right. Developing a working relationship with your child’s teachers helps you and the teachers better assess your child’s readiness and ability to do the job. Attend activities at the school and get to know the teacher before problems crop up.

Positive affirmations works well to encourage and instill self-confidence. Reprinted from The Tennessean, July 28, 2014
