No coursework = no promotions. Obviouslytalking smack about how much free time ENS Lewishas didn’t work.

Sea Cadets should send the coursework directly to Judy Lewis9022 E. Diamond Rim Dr., Scottsdale, AZ 85255 or email to her email

at: [email protected] or submit it during drill to ENS Hilko (lastresort). The chapter tests at the end of the course are the tests thatneed to be submitted.

League cadets are to submit their coursework to their LPO oradult leader, INST Meade or MDSM Hopkins. The coursework to submitis the tests at the end of the book associated with each section. Wegrade the coursework onsite and if there is enough adult help to gradethe coursework and you pass you will if eligible get promoted that drill.

Please make sure your name, SSN, course name and chapter is

written on the completed score sheets. The Sea Cadet courses,BMR, Seamen etc and the Navy League syllabus may be

downloaded from:

http://compass.seacadets.org/cadets/index.htm.

Cadets: This doesn’t affect my promotions, just yours. Thebetter you do the higher you will be promoted, the greater the

chance of going to the cool trainings and the greater the

chance for scholarships and the harder I will work to get youROTC, Academy appointments or in encouraging the recruiters

to help you or be used as a reference in the civilian world. Youwork hard, the staff will work hard for you, you don’t work

hard, and the staff won’t work hard for you.

Commanders Corner:

It is our start of a new training year even while summertrainings are occurring. The unit grew in June which traditionally is amonth when numbers shrink. Eight cadets and eight new staff joined

during this past month. We continue to have people join from theevent at Luke Days but we are now recruiting from the other eventssince Luke Days. We needed the new staff desperately as the adults onstaff were beginning to get overwhelmed with the numbers of newcadets. This program does not survive without the help of dedicated

adults.

The July drill is adult staff only drill as it for staff training and

planning drill. The supply room will be open for supply issues but only

for those cadets who are going to training. We have many new adults

who have joined recently so that both days will be dedicated to

training and for planning.

Our next drill for cadets will be in August. The league cadets will

continue to work on the basics. There will be time when the less

experienced Sea Cadets will receive basic instruction while the

advanced cadets will be broken off some of the time for Seabeetraining. We are working on some fun activities for the afternoon part

of the drill. The uniform for the drill will be PT gear. The pool is looking

like a winner for an afternoon for each group again. There will be a

sea-bag check for all cadets scheduled for October to get ready for

winter uniforms and after the summer growth spurts.

Ten cadets and five staff from Veterans Pride Battalion,

Phoenix Division and Region 15-2 assisted the family of Army

PFC John Corey Johnson, a 10th Mountain Division Soldier

KIA in Afghanistan, in support of Operation American Patriot. The PFC Johnson support was the first public event for

The following is an email from the mother of PFC Johnson.

Subject: Gratitude from family of PFC John Corey Johnson

Dear Jerry,

I have begun the task of writing "thank you" notes to all the many people

who assisted us through this most difficult time. At the top of my list is your

name but your card does not have a mailing address on it. Is it possible to

get a mailing address where I can mail a card to you? Also I would like to

know how to contact the Sea Cadets that attended the reception. What an

awesome group of young men. If they have meetings of some sort I would

even like to bring in a pizza or something for them and let them know how

much they are appreciated.

I have always believed that the events of our lives are predetermined by God

but never has it been as clear to me as it is now. I feel a total loss of control

of everything that life meant to me. Through all of this some very special

people have been brought into my life and you are one of them. I only hope

that our relationship can continue past these events and that I can in some

way continue to serve the great country that my son so loved.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart,

Vicki L. Dryer

Eight cadets and four staff from US Naval Sea Cadets Region 15-2,

Phoenix Division and Veterans Pride Battalion for two days supported the

2011 Statewide Symposium in Support of Service Members, Veterans &

Their Families, 2nd annual Arizona Coalition Military Family (ACMF)

symposium. This group is supported by the AZ Dept of Veteran Services

and AZ National Guard Yellow Ribbon program.

“The Arizona National Guard’s top priority is to take care of our military members.

The ACMF will provide a great way as a resource to all of Arizona’s military

communities.” –Major General Hugo E. Salazar, The Adjutant General

Two Cadets in particular, Crew and Tomlinson, volunteered 26 hours

during the last two days supporting PFC Johnson’s family and thesymposium during a two day period. Outstanding job! The Sea Cadet

program will be tasked to provide support to ACMF and OAP in the future.

10 cadets/6 staff from Veterans Pride Battalion and Region

15-2 with the USS Arizona replica attended the Phoenix

Memorial day events at the Phoenix AZ National

Cemetery. The cadets acted as an escort for the local

chapter of the Pearl Harbor survivors and participated in amass passing of colors.

Attendance is vital to the cadet’s success in theprogram. While this is a volunteer program, consistent attendance atdrill is very important to the progress of the cadets. We have grownsignificantly over the last few months. If a cadet doesn’t attend drill for

8/3/2019 Newsletter VP July 2011

three months in a row without communication, they will be droppedfrom the program. If a cadet is in the position of authority in theprogram and misses drill with or without communication consistently, the cadet will lose that position. Don’t let that happen to you

While a League Cadet does not technically outrank a Sea Cadet,a Sea Cadet who shows disrespect for any LeagueCadet regardless of rank is a behavior set that willnot be tolerated. It has come to my attention thatsome Sea Cadets have an issue with some LeagueCadets especially when those League Cadets whohave earned a position of authority. That authoritycomes from my position as a CO and if the SeaCadet cannot respect that, then there are someoptions that Sea Cadet has and those optionsinclude get over it and do the work to be advancedin the program, verbal counseling, losing rank or nolonger being allowed to participate in the program.

Our region’s Recruit Training (RT), Petty Officer Leadership

Academy (POLA), and Seabee advanced course will be given in NMduring late July. LCDR Sartain will be in charge of RT (21-31 July) atAlbuquerque NM and I am the POC for the POLA course that will beheld at Bataan Military Academy, Albuquerque NM (24-31 July). Costsare expected to be $190 for the RT and $105 for the POLA course..While travel costs are the responsibility of the parents, the unit isworking to have the parents help each other out. The Navy League

Orientation course is a work in progress that we are looking to givethis winter if we have enough volunteer instructors. The region isworking on recruiting adult instructors. You could be one.http://www.seacadets.org/public/officer/The following is a video from a training graduation in California:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVahgEmUhZ8

Over the last month I have sent out numerous emails askingfor volunteers and for cadets to respond (RSVP) whether or not youwill be able to support activities. RSVP that say you are able orunable to attend are important to managing the events. Many of these events are important for the exposure the program receivesand looks very good on resumes that each child needs to build forcolleges or for those cadets considering the military academies orROTC programs.

The Question:

Hello we would like to know what the letters r.s.v.p. stand for. We know

what it means, but aren't sure what each letter stands for. Please help.

The Answer:

The letters stand for "repondez s'il vous plait," which is French for "please

respond."

If anyone knows a school, church or other youth program that isinterested please contact me with a point of contact. Your cadet willget credit for at least one of the new recruits. Our separated unitprogram continues to grow. The separated program is a difficult one tomanage but we are improving as we learn about the inherentchallenges that we were not aware of on the first evaluation of theprogram. Thank you to those adults who have worked with me on this.Progress has slowed with the start of summer vacations.

There will be a training course being held during July drill at theReserve Center. An OPD101 (adult entry level in-resident course) willbe given on Sat July 16th and the OPD 201A/T (Intermediateadmin/training courses) will be scheduled for Sunday July 17th theOPD101 course is a requirement for all instructors. The OPD201A/Tcourses are required for all those involved in the command, admin or

training administration areas of the program. All parents who areinterested in learning more about the program and/or about themilitary are invited to attend the OPD101 course.

Our schedule for the last third of the year is filling up.Veterans Pride Battalion will spend the weekend of Sept 10-12 at the Navajo Nation to support a small Sea Cadet unitlocated in Ganado. It is a big parade at the Annual NavajoNation Days parade but for parents, who think they want togo with us and believe there are hotels nearby availablethat weekend, the closest available hotels are usually inFlagstaff and the parade is in Window Rock with very badtraffic. The cadets and staff will be staying at one of theschools in Ganado AZ.

12th, Pearl Harbor Day Dec 7th Downtown Phoenix, Wreaths acrossAmerica with the Patriot Guard Riders in early December are just someof the events being scheduled. Work has been started in supportingthe 100th anniversary of the state of Arizona for next year. I expectmany more requests for support from the Sea Cadets.

The USS AZ replica and some of the regional staff will beattending the Pearl Harbor 70th anniversary later this year. Initially wetried to make it a training event for cadets but logistics, costs and timeproved to be our enemies in this case. Schools will be too close tofinals for the cadets to be able to miss a week of school.

As many know the Naval Reserve center (NOSC) is closing downin December and the Navy Reserve is moving to Luke AFB. Due tosecurity requirements of Luke AFB and logistical issues, I have decidednot to move the unit to Luke. We have not yet found a permanenthome with all of the requirements, storage on-site is an issue, thereare several options for the staff is currently pursuing and we have ameeting place for the foreseeable future.

Other projects the staff has worked on include meetings with theNavy Recruiting Command, CDR Wessman, XO and next CO, A STEM(science, technology, engineering and mathematics) exploratory groupformation was discussed and working on greater cooperation. TheNavy has a website: http://www.stem2stern.org/index. The regional

senior staff also met with the Navy League Phoenix Council, the civilianNational Org, http://www.navyleague.org/ ,that is responsible for theSea Cadet program to discuss how to revitalize the cooperationbetween the two groups.

I have a request for all cadets, parents and staff: If you aregoing to miss drill, need something from me, etc etc email me. Even if you told me and I “heard’ it maybe even responded with more than an

8/3/2019 Newsletter VP July 2011

incoherent mutter as I went from one thing to another at drill orduring an event. With 40 plus cadets, 10 plus staff, XX maybe XXXnumber of parents/family members and that is just VPB, I don’t standa chance of remembering it all anymore. As we continue to grow theprogram and we become involved in multiple activities, my brain only

holds so much and “stuff” you tell me is leaking out. I jumped on acadet and parent about communicating about missing drill, they toldme two months ago that they informed me that the cadet was going tomiss drill, I had completely forgot. We are putting processes in placebut I and the other volunteers in the program ask all to work with us.

Thank youBob Dalpe LT CO VPB USNSCC
