January Sessions Offer More for UpperclassmenThe schedule is different for 2011 - two January sessions rather than one, to allow more

upperclassmen to attend. In preparation for that, we’ll be designing additional programming to help with those who soon will enter the job market and start their professional careers.

For both January sessions, we’ll have alumni on hand who are involved in corporate

recruiting, hiring/ring for their companies, or who provide services or support for those preparing for new jobs. General and breakout sessions will help you make better decisions about your future.

Bring your resumes! – we’ll have experienced people who can provide critical analysis and recommendations to make your resume more effective. Take the online career assessment (see story on p. 3) to get an idea of where you can be successful and happy. Come with questions

about how to establish yourself within your professional community.Just the opportunity to sit down at lunch with a corporate CEO, entrepreneur, attorney or

small business owner is an excellent way to nd out more about your options. Our faculty is here to spend time with students and is eager to hear your goals and share their knowledge. A

number of our attendees have found internships or summer jobs through some of our speakers. Currently, we plan to have sessions on nding and getting the job you want, your resume and job interview skills, or working internationally.

Breakout sessions are planned to help with your business wardrobe, starting an investment fund, buying a home, or moving to a new city. We’ll also have people who can talk about utilizing the resources of Phi

Psi’s many area alumni associations – a great way to begin networking. If you’re graduating in the next two years, this is a program that will help you prepare yourself for life after college, and help you plan for your future. Going to graduate school? We’ve invited speakers who can

explain the process and provide hints on the admissions exams and how they affect your prospects. Few of these sessions will be offered during March, when most attendees are freshmen and sophomores.

Fellowships for ALA Registration Fees

The Phi Kappa Psi Foundation has announced $10,000 in

need-based fellowships for students to attend leadership programs.

The ALA’s Cabo Leadership Experience (CLE) qualies for those funds, so CLE attendees are eligible to apply.

Applications are available online now, from the Endowment Fund website (see link below). Students may apply for an

amount to cover their registration fee. If approved, those funds

will be paid directly to the ALA in that student’s name and you’ll be provided a discount code to use to register online.

This is an excellent opportunity to help those who might not otherwise be able to attend a CLE session. Campus contacts and

alumni volunteers should make their groups aware of these

fellowships, the application process and the website link.

Online applications will be accepted until December 1, but attendees for our January sessions should apply before the November 1 ALA registration deadline.

For more information, or to apply online, visit the Phi Kappa

Psi Foundation website at: http://alturl.com/wrins !

Tryon Hubbard currently serves as the National President of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.

Hubbard to Attend January SessionsJ. Tryon Hubbard, Alabama ’64, plans to be with us during both January sessions. A charter

member of the University of Alabama Chapter, Tryon left the university with a degree in electrical engineering. He put that knowledge to good use with the U.S. Army and the Boeing Company, as a guidance system engineer on the Saturn V Apollo moon program.

Since Boeing, he’s worked with a small software rm that became a Fortune 500 company, founded a Theatre ‘Round the Corner, Huntsville, Alabama’s rst professional theatre, and is an owner of VideoRay, LLC, a world leader in remotely operated vehicles. He’s served AL Alpha as House Corporation President and is a founder of both the Florida Panhandle and Huntsville Alumni Associations. He has twice received the James H. Webb Outstanding Alumnus Award from his chapter, as well as the Edward H. Knight Award of Merit from Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.

Tryon served as Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President of Phi Kappa Psi and was elected President at the 2010 GAC in Orlando in July. While it may not be rocket science to lead a national organization, it’s nice to know the skills are there... just in case! !

Online Registration Deadlines: November 1 for January sessionDecember 1 for March sessions

Prepare to Learn...Don’t think of this as a Spring Break trip – it’s so much more.

You will have information and opportunities in Cabo that you won’t get on your campus, and that will give you an edge over others seeking leadership positions and in nding a job. You also

will nd new ways of looking at old problems and will become more condent in your ability to lead. That may make this program the most valuable tool in your success as an undergrad

and in nding a job later. Compare the expense of attending to the cost of a four-year education and it’s a bargain!

Attendees will get out of the program what they put into it.

Come ready to participate, learn, ask questions, and network with proven leaders and you will walk away with skills and information you can use throughout life. It’s a wonderful compliment to your academic work and, when it gets right down

to it, may be the one distinguishing factor that gets you the interview you need to start your own successful career.

So many past attendees use the words life-changing to describe

their experience, and they made decisions while in Cabo to make changes in their personal and chapter life to get rid of habits that will drag them down and embrace and practice habits that will

help them succeed in life. Every student has the possibility of this kind of experience, if you come ready and willing.

Visit the website for more information and to reserve space for your campus, but hurry. Space is limited to only 150 men per

session. Reserve space early to secure your seats. !

Jeremy Tillman A recent addition to the ALA Board, Jeremy is a UCLA grad (BA & MBA)

and is President of Printworks of California, in Palm Desert. Before that, he worked in healthcare IT and as a systems engineer & technology manager. Jeremy’s most recent work for ALA includes a revision of our website, logo and marketing materials. You’ll see those rolling out this month. As with other ALA Board members, he’s doing this at no cost to the ALA, as an investment in the success of our programs. He’s also going to be at one or more of our program sessions to work with students. We’re happy to have him with us!

Connect with your Career! For 2011, we’re happy to continue our

partnership with I’ve Got Skills™. I’ve Got Skills™ is a provider of online career assessments and can help users nd the

careers and specic job descriptions where they will have the greatest likelihood for success. The $350 test will be available to

January attendees for $25.The online assessment

was created from a

program designed for major corporations, to help them determine which mid-level employees

had the skills and qualities to move up into executive positions. It is based on a

data set proling top performers in hundreds of professions.

Users take the ve-part assessment online and answer questions about their passions, interests, skills and competencies, as well as respond to more

quantitative questions in math, reading and other skills. The composite score is used to

generate recommendations of professions (general) and jobs (specic) that match a student’s interests and skill sets.

As they say, nd a job you enjoy and

you’ll never work a day in your life. It’s also said that when you do something you’re passionate about, success will follow.

At any rate, it makes sense that students who are able to pursue careers that interest and fulll them, and also

match their skill sets, will be more successful than those who hate their jobs or don’t have the skills or aptitude to do them well.

If you don’t know what you want to do with your life, this test will give you dozens of options – options for

which you’re already a good t. If you think you already know what you want to do, see how closely the

test matches your plans. If there’s a poor match, you may want to

rethink. It doesn’t mean you can’t pursue something different, just that it may take

more effort to be successful. ALA program registrants will receive low or no cost access to this valuable online assessment. !

Fraternity Staff at Each SessionDuring each session of the Cabo Leadership Experience,

members of the Phi Kappa Psi professional staff will be in Cabo. Each will have a speaking session or two and all will be available to meet with chapters after our educational sessions, to help address your specic needs. In addition, many of the elected ofcers and foundation trustees will join us for sessions.

This is a great opportunity for your chapter to work on goal setting, organize a rush workshop, or discuss how to overcome challenges at your campus. Fraternity staff are experienced in every facet of chapter life, from scholarship and philanthropy, to buying, managing or replacing a chapter house.

Staff plan to be in Cabo on the following schedule. Know who will be at your session and be ready to make the most of their knowledge and experience. !

Annual CampaignThe 2010 Annual Campaign is well

underway, with a total of over $265,000 donated already. Each year, over $400,000 must be raised to underwrite ALA’s

educational programming. Without this support, the cost to students for the week would be nearly $600, in addition to their

airfare. Since the ALA is an approved charitable entity, all donations are deductible to the full extent allowed

by law.Gifts can be by check, mailed to the

ALA, or made online by credit card or electronic check, via our Campaign

Webpage. Of special note is a recent Recurring Gift option that allows donors to set up a monthly or quarterly gift. Not only

may this allow a larger gift, in installments, but a generous donor has agreed to match all recurring gifts, up to a gross total of

$5,000 per month. Work for an employer that matches gifts and you can triple its impact on the ALA!

If you value the programs the ALA

provides – whether the impact on the students, on their organizations when they return, or on the potential we create for

leaders in America – we encourage you to invest in the programs with a contribution.

For additional information, click the web

links above, or contact the ALA by E-mail at [email protected], or by phone at 877-257-1458. !

ALA Board of DirectorsThe ALA Board had its fall meeting

September 28th to prepare for the 2011 season. As usual, budgets and curriculum were discussed, fundraising plans were

reviewed, and the Board voted upon orders of business to allow the ALA to fulll its mission of education.

the board as its newest director. Other directors are: Chairman

John Henebry, USC; Vice Chairman Dick

Starr, Ohio State; Treasurer Brian Bangs, Nebraska; Directors Brian Clarke, Indiana; Brent Monroe, Oregon; Jeremy Tillman,

UCLA; Greg Wittstock, Ohio State and; John Ziegelmeyer, Kansas. Tom Pennington, Texas, serves as ALA’s Executive Director and Secretary of the ALA Board.

stays on mission and that funds are used wisely and appropriately. !

meeting mentioned above, the Board of ALA Holdings LLC (ALAH) convened to review issues related to its ownership of the stock in the Mexican corporations that own
