Indigenous Gardening Club IDSNon-aboriginal and aboriginal students are participating in the Indigenous Gardening Club, held every Friday during FLEX block. Pictured above, students dig hole prior to planting an espalier apple tree. So far, students have learned about perennials, annuals, bulbs as well as how plant and transplant flowers and trees. This is an Independent Directed Study (Horticulture 11).

ORANGE SHIRT DAY SEPT. 30, 2016

Our first field trip of the year involved students learning about indigenous plants and their traditional and medicinal uses at Fish Trap Creek. Next a group of grade 12 students toured the former Indian Residential School in Kamloops on their way to Little Shuswap Lake where they stayed at Quaaout Lodge. While there, they enjoyed learning some ethnobotany while hiking along the Adams River Trial and canoeing in the lake. On Sept. 30 Mouat participated school wide in Orange Shirt Day to encourage awareness of the Indian Residential School’s legacy and the need for reconciliation. Our first Feast of the year took place on the Sept 26.

What’s Up So Far?

Sturgeon FishingStarting in Mission Harbour, four jet boats carried 12 Mouat Aboriginal students and four staff members who went sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River on Oct.19. Not only did students enjoy a beautiful day, but they also caught plenty of sturgeon, measured and had microchips inserted in them for the purpose of conservation. Fish ranged in size from 6’6” – 19 inches. Science, conservation and culture were highlights of this trip.
