NEWSLETTER Wednesday, 7th February, 2018
Dear Parents,
The abnormal start to the school year has impacted on myself being on class. A number of whole-school decisions were still being made after students had returned causing an extra burden on my workload. Fortunately, Mr Blackmore is keeping a steady ship while I am attending to these administrative tasks. Thanks, Mr Blackmore!
Here’s some news from Mr Blackmore:-
This term in Year 3/4, students will continue to
learning about Narratives. The Year 3 will focus on writing a short imaginative narrative
based on a familiar theme, while Year 4 students will create a new chapter for the
narrative ‘The Twits’ for an audience of their peers. Drama is the strand of Arts that
they will be studying this term that concludes with students performing their production
of a ‘Lost Land’. In Maths students will continue to strengthen their addition,
subtraction, multiplication number facts knowledge and time reading skills. The Science
focus is Life and Living. Year three study is regarding ‘living’, ‘non-living’ and ‘once
living’. Year four will be studying Life Cycles. Students examine in HASS (Humanities and
Social Sciences) Year 3 look at communities, while Year 4 learn about the settlement of
Australia.
We look forward to a busy and productive Term!

Tonight, is the first P&C meeting for the year. On Monday, we sent out relevant information about the purpose of the P&C and subsequent role expectations for executive members. I trust this information has enlightened you on the importance of the P&C. As too, provided you an awareness that we are all in this together when raising funds and hosting an event. So, hopefully you can attend and help make it another great year.
The first event for the P&C being discussed tonight is the family BBQ next Friday afternoon. This is a great opportunity to welcome new families and catch up with familiar faces. Hope to see you there.
Last Friday’s parade was another sign for a good year ahead. Thank you to the many parents who attended. Supporting this weekly event makes school life more enjoyable and memorable. To Fynn and O’Hara, Well Done!
As things start settling down, we begin to ramp our focus for the year. To date, we have focused mainly on Reading with great success. We still retain a strong focus on Reading though our main focus this year is improving Writing performances.
A significant action within this focus is to establish individual learning goals for Writing to begin Term 2. However, if you would like to know more about what is happening in your child’s learning, within Writing or other areas, we are more than willing to discuss how we can work together in the best interest of your child.
As we begin the year, it’s a timely reminder how this school values the importance of preventing and appropriately reacting to any form of bullying, including cyber bullying. Attached to this edition (p 9 and 10) is an appendix within our Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students which outlines procedures for preventing and responding to incidents of bullying. This procedure aligns with our values of Understanding, Co-operation and Initiative.

UNAUTHORISED, which then requires us to attempt to contact you as soon as possible as to
your child’s whereabouts. Parents please remember that school BEGINS at 9:50am, so it would
be appreciated if your child could be at school before this time, so that they are ready to go to

ensure that your child is here on time and that has his/her school uniform on. Each child will

Photography” and has been taking our school photos for a number of years now. They don’t ask
for any money upfront and offer a variety of packs to suit. The photos arrive at the office for
parents to come up and choose, so you are under no obligation to purchase the photos if you do
not choose to.

GARDENING NEWS
“THE LEVI” Despite the rain last Friday, we had a very productive first Friday of the
year. Before Parade, Zoe, Jocelyn and Claire helped me harvest for KAFE –
zucchini and eggplant for the pizza, and ingredients for the ‘forage
salad’ (Ceylon spinach leaves + shoots, nasturtium and amaranth leaves,
melon flowers, and cherry tomatoes). Along with the HUGE number of
pumpkins I picked with some Year 5-6 girls last week PLUS the eggplants my husband Steve grilled and
marinated over the holidays, Zeb and the gang put together a great, tasty healthy lunch.
Due to the wet weather we had the 5-6 class indoors. First, Mr Tony and I discussed appropriate and
inappropriate behaviours in the garden with the kids – and we all agreed on appropriate consequences for LACK
OF ADHERENCE. (In a nutshell: you have to listen to adults; if you whinge or don’t do what you’re supposed to
do, you miss out on an ice block after class AND you have to do a yukky job - like clean out the chook pen, or
wash the caddies. You must use tools safely. You also need to share tools with everyone, whether they are a boy
or a girl, and regardless of their background - and even if they are your sister or brother).
Then we got to menu planning. The kids used cookbooks and/or the internet to find a main course and another
dish (eg soup or dessert) which included veggies + fruit from all the five colour groups – red; green; white +
brown; yellow + orange; and blue + purple. The dishes would be on the KAFE menu this year. The colour idea is
based on a Queensland Health campaign – see more at:
www.healthier.qld.gov.au/about/give-colour-a-spin
The kids really engaged with this. At the end we wrote up a list of potential meals and voted on them. The
winner was actually a recipe devised by Levi. We’re calling it “THE LEVI”…
THE LEVI: A salad of red onion, tomato, lettuce, avocado, carrot, beetroot, cheese, crispy chicken with Italian
dressing (ie oil and oregano)
The side dish is dumplings (something Zeb and the kids have served before). Dessert is a fruit salad, served with
or without home-made ice cream.
With so many root veggies (onion, carrot and beetroot) this really is a cool season menu, and we need to think
about sowing some seeds soon.
A close second menu was Sushi with avocado and salmon, plus Rice pudding with mango and blueberries - and
home-made rhubarb ice cream. Definitely a warm season menu, with the mango and avo’s. Maybe Zeb will
consider serving this soon.
My intrepid garden angels, Robyn and Anne, meanwhile, braved the rain to finish harvesting for Zeb and to do
some weeding in the food garden.
After first break Michelle, Asheley and I took the Prep-1-2s out during a brief dry spell – straight to the chook
run, the kids’ favourite place in our garden. Two of the chickens have developed an irritation on their chests, so
we picked some aloe vera and rubbed the gel on their skin. The girls (the chooks, I mean) really seemed to like it.
A few of the kids already knew of the benefits of this plant – to relieve burns and stings. Even little Chris was
engaged, especially when I told him that the chooks originally came from his grandparents at Pomona Ag
Supplies.
Great work kids. I’m looking forward to another productive year with you all. Adult helpers ALWAYS welcome,
too. Keith

KIN KIN KIDS GO TO CANBERRA
The year 6’s are finally getting their chance to go to Canberra for their school camp. They
have always gone camping at various Sunshine Coast places but this year they have de-
cided to do a yearly trip to Canberra. Some kids have never seen snow! Lots of excite-
ment and fundraising ideas throughout the 13 Kin Kin kids. They are fundraising by
washing cars, raffles and asking businesses to help.
They will be going at the end of July and need to raise as much funds as possible. The
kids, parents and P & C are helping them get there and have raised over $3000 already.
Donations have come from High Spirits, Kin Kin Community Group, Vizion Group, Country
Life Hotel and Kin Kin Drama Group so far.
Keep up the good work! To help please contact the school on 5485 4168 or see facebook for events on https://www.facebook.com/KinKinStateSchool/
