Newsletter Week 10 Term 1 2020
Principal’s message
While we move toward the holidays I would like to acknowledge the resilience of each and every member of our school community. These are complex times for all of us and we are each experiencing it in our unique way. Lucky for us, kids are resilient and bounce back – of course with the correct support and guidance. I hope that you are keeping well and taking care of yourself so that you are in the best position possible to take care of your kids.
Thank you for the work you are doing with our students at home – ensuring the learning continues is our priority. Our teachers, School Learning and Support Officers and administration staff have been working tirelessly to ensure the provision of education for students is uninterrupted. The communication and feedback I have been receiving from families highlights the value placed on education and the support you have for our school. The messages we receive are held in high regard and make us proud – while I was writing this message 5PW parents sent through a message of thanks to Ms Wiley - ‘Thank you for all your efforts supporting us through the transition to online learning, especially under such challenging circumstances. We look forward to when we can come together again as a class. In the meantime we hope you stay healthy and safe’. Thank you to those families who have made time to provide feedback in one way or another.
Yes, our school is open, and no student will be turned away. However, today is the last day our staff will come together as a whole school – due to flexible working arrangements staff will be working from home at times. Teachers will continue to communicate with each other around their teaching and learning, as well as the wellbeing of their students. Resources for remote learning will continue to be provided for students learning at home. Students attending school will be supervised and supported with their learning by teachers. For them it’s business as usual; and our office remains open from 9.15am to 3pm.
While what happens today may not be happening tomorrow I would like to wish you all the best for the school holidays, and hope that you take the time to do something you enjoy.
We all look forward to connecting with you again next term, remotely or at school.

Parent / teacher interviews have been cancelled. Parents will be advise when new dates have been scheduled.
On Thursday 19 March, across Australia, students and staff in our schools came together to celebrate and foster harmony. Harmony Day is an Australian Government program that centres on the message that “Everyone belongs”, reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians. Since 1999, thousands of Harmony Day events have been staged in childcare centres, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies across Australia. At Summer Hill we encouraged our students to wear orange or any special traditional cultural dress/ costume to celebrate and acknowledge our diverse cultural and familial backgrounds.
An Update from our Parliamentary representative Miranda L, Minister for the Environment
We are now taking Expressions of Interest from families with a child due to start Kindergarten in 2021. Families that reside within the catchment please email the school to be sent an ‘Expression of Interest’ link. For additional information about the enrolment policy and Out of Area applications view our enrolment policy on the school website.

Waste Free Wednesday
Two weeks ago in week 7, we had 'Waste free Wednesday'. Waste free Wednesday occurs every term in week 7. It encourages students to use less waste when packing their lunch. We had so many students showing us their waste free lunches and earning tokens for their houses: Congratulations. Thank you as well to the house captains who came to school early to help set up and hand out tokens. So keep up the good work for the opportunity to win an extra recess with your house each term. Watch this space: we have been planning something additional as well.
TerraCycle
Two years ago Ms Carroll and 3/4 PC made our very first 'TerraCycle' bin. The recy-cling business runs a volunteer-based recycling platform to collect non-recyclable waste, and then turn it into raw materials to be used in new products. We encourage you to keep empty toothpaste tubes, including the lids and toothbrushes in a clean place in your home so that after coronavirus we can hygienically send more off to be recycled. But for now: * Consider using protective equipment such as a mask and gloves when handling any waste * Always wash your hands after handling any waste * Practice other health and hygiene precautions
Clean Up Australia Day
On Friday 28th February , we had 'Clean Up Australia Day'. We filled up about 10 kg of waste and 6 kg of recyclables. That is an amazing achievement! Good job everyone on keeping our playground looking clean and tidy. Thank you house captains for being at your stations very early and ready to collect trash and tokens. We all did a marvelous job of tidying up our playground. That is all for now, have a terrific Easter and autumn holiday

Congratulations to all the students for walking and wheeling to school on our active travel day Friday 13 March! We had a great turn out and some fantastic ‘freaky’ decorated bikes, helmets and scooters. We have now drawn the raffle. Winning students were presented with their prizes in their classes on Friday. First prize Micro Sprite Scooter and helmet was won by Victoria (2VW) and Micro Cruiser Scooter and helmet won by Brian (5AW). We’re sure you’ll enjoy those awesome prizes, donated by Microscooter. Runner up prize packs including a goodies such as a bike lock, bike carrybag, t-shirt, reflective safety sash or hooter were won by Mia (KOB), Henry (2VK), Zara (KOB), Neil (5SH), Ebony (6AW) and Ryan (5PW). Thanks to City of Sydney Council and the P&C for support. Thank you to Ms Williams, student Ministers and parent volunteers for helping with the prize draw, handing out stickers and raffle tickets, fitting helmets and parking bikes and scooters. Thanks to Amy for the prizes and Helen for stepping in at the last minute to organise the day. Summer Hill Public School would love to see our students keep up the walking and riding safely throughout the year. If you are looking for activities to do at home you could print out the Ride2School day colouring-in page or find-a-word at the back of this newsletter

PSSA Softball and T-ball
Chess coaching will be ceasing until the end of the term. For the last 3 weeks of term, the classes will be delivered online. Sydney Academy of Chess will email details to all parents in the class. Chess
We are so proud of the students who showed their resilience and bravery by trying out for and gaining acceptance to the Junior T-Ball and Senior Softball teams. We started our season late due to rain but all teams were off to a strong start! Many of our T-Ball players have never played a team sport before and have already shown their good sportsmanship and dedication to learning a new game. In their first game, Summer Hill played against Burwood. In a closely contested match, the boys T-Ball team lost 13-11. The girls T-Ball team showed great sportsmanship, losing 25-10. The girls Softball team had a close loss (6 runs to 5) but demonstrated their good attitudes and most importantly – they had fun! The boys Softball team had a strong start to the season, winning 10-0 and are excited to see where the next game takes them. In our second week, Summer Hill played against Ashfield. Unfortunately, the junior T ballers had a bye but used the opportuni ty to get in some good practise! In our Senior Softball teams, the girls won 20-8, and the boys won 15-7. Unfortunately our third and fourth games were cancelled, but we are excited to keep playing in the future! Keep up the good work Summer Hill! Miss Edwards (Softball) and Ms Kepars (T-Ball)
Senior Choir
On Monday Senior Choir held their first rehearsal via Zoom. It was wonderful to be able to connect the choir this way and continue to sing together despite our multiple locations! Next Monday we will hold our final rehearsal for Term One at recess time, 1.15pm. The Zoom link will be sent out via Class Dojo on Friday. Thanks again to everyone who participated!
Bands and Orchestras
With the cancellation of our regular rehearsals we definitely don’t want the music to stop, and we want our ensembles to stil l get together and enjoy music. We have set up a google classroom for each of the instrumental ensembles in our program – this way, students sign up for their ensemble, and can receive music, links, information and practice goals from our conductors. The code for each ensemble has been emailed to parents/carers. Please let us know if you would rather receive an email update each week. We can organise that if your child is unable to access the internet from home.
