INTEREST GROUPS AND EVENT REPORTS

Always check online for possible timing variations. Check with the group leader if you are not sure. A number of groups have room for more members. If you wish to join any of them, please contact the Group Coordinator TOPICAL/CURRENT AFFAIRS GROUP Coordinator: Nigel McNeill - Tel: 641634 MAY REPORT At our last meeting, there were one or two missing, but nonetheless we had an enjoyable discussion about Trump’s proposed State visit, and the surrounding protocol which, in all our opinions, whatever you think of the individual, we all have an opinion. Hence the title of the meeting was: “Marmite, you love it or hate it.” We all agreed that the State visit is an invitation to the Holder of the office and not the actual person and therefore should be treated with the utmost respect in every way. We then had a brief discussion along similar lines about the re-emergence of Nigel Farage and his Brexit party standing for the possible EU elections. Again, we all felt that this was some form of enablement, for those who may wish to register a protest vote about the current circumstances we all find ourselves in. Many thanks to Joy for hosting the meeting, and we next meet at Richard and Sandra’s for another great discussion. We still have a space or two if any other members are interested in joining us. If so, please contact Nigel McNeill. Nigel

POETRY READING Coordinator: Betty Wilson Tel: 209790 We certainly had an amusing meeting in May reading the poetry of Lewis Carroll 1832 - 1898. Born in Cheshire the third child of eleven to an Anglican clergyman, he lived in various parts of the country. He studied at Oxford and became a scientist and mathematician as well as a poet of humorous verse. He is most famous for writing Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. His poems were written mainly for children, containing fantasy and comic verse and were very popular with both children and adults.

Some of the poems we read included The Lobster Quadrillions, You Are Old Father William, The Walrus and the Carpenter, The Bee and Turtle Soup and others.

There will be no poetry meetings in July and August but we will meet again on September 4th the topic being the poet John Drinkwater.

Have a good summer.

MUSIC APPRECIATION GROUP Co-ordinators: John Peverley 553614 Tony MacDonald 553910 Sergei Prokofiev was the subject of Alan Shean’s programme for May, Prokofiev, the composer of ‘Peter and the wolf’, a work we all enjoyed as children. The Classical Symphony (1917), a sparking work in the style of Haydn or early Mozart. We heard excerpts of both. In 1917 Prokofiev moved to the USA where his music was admired but not generally liked. Perhaps being anti-romantic it was ahead of its time. In 1923 he made his home in Paris but the pull of Mother Russia was strong and in 1936 he returned home. Mother Russia was now the Soviet Union, where art is turned into a vehicle for Soviet propaganda. In 1948 Prokofiev, with others, was charged with Formalism (anti-demographic tendencies that are alien to the Soviet people and its artistic tastes). They repented and gave this undertaking, “We shall bend every effort to apply our knowledge and artistic mastery to produce vivid, realistic music reflecting the life and struggles of the Soviet people”! Alan’s selection of recordings clearly demonstrated the effect that Soviet diktat had on Prokofiev’s music. As one would expect from this source, a truly absorbing morning! Thanks to Lynda for refreshments. Our meeting on 20th June is with Glenys. Tony MUSIC AND MEMORIES Group One Co-ordinator Nohline Ruff Tel. 556985 Our group members are very creative in thinking of music that is appropriate for current situations. A Beatles’ number of ‘Try to see it my way. . . . . .. ‘We can work it out ‘ sadly failed to have a positive effect on those wrangling in Westminster but we did welcome young Archie with Music for the Royal fireworks. We had a jazz track from clarinettist John Surman and were told about him playing a haunting solo whilst walking up the aisle of Coventry cathedral. Nat King Cole sang ‘Because you’re mine’ a song that was sung by a husband when washing up. The member that contributed this went on to tell us of a compilation tape of ‘music to wash up by’ compiled by their children. We had a very appropriate song from Joe Stilgoe in which he sang ‘I’d like to thank you all for coming and playing our kind of music’.

We also enjoyed Linda’s delicious cakes, who could resist them?! Thank you to Ken for hosting this session. In June we will be at the Ruffs’ and in July, Gwenda will be our host for another lazy summer afternoon with opportunity to hear more than twenty diverse music tracks. Nohline MUSIC AND MEMORIES 2 The second desert island with discs. Co-ordinator Nohline Ruff Tel. 556985 Carole made us very welcome for our May meeting and started the session with an energetic track by the Eurythmics, ‘Sisters are doing it for themselves’ (behind every great man there had to be a great woman!) We heard Josh Grogan sing the beautiful song ‘Imagination’ from the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film. This was followed by some trad jazz by Kenny Ball and then the amazing voices of Bryn Turfel and Andrea Bocelli combined in a duet from the Pearl Fishers, this would be recognised even by those of us who are not particularly opera fans. ‘Sweet talking Guy’ by The Chiffons was accompanied by memories of listening to music on a reel-to-reel tape. We had a change of mood with the Radetzky March, played by a brass band and a Mozart horn concerto. A more gentle mood was set by Rod Stewart’s ‘I am sailing’ and Honor Blackman reading Wordsworth’s ‘I wandered lonely as a cloud’ accompanied by a background of Tchaikovsky piano music. I particularly liked a piece called ‘Winter’s Crossing’ played by the flautist James Galway and referencing Scots Protestant emigrants sailing from Derry for a new beginning in Pennsylvania. It is very enjoyable to hear a previously unknown track. Our June meeting will be hosted by Eve and, in July, Sheila and Tony will be inviting us to their home. We have room in our group for another member so contact me if you think this might be your cup of tea. You will soon feel part of this very relaxed group. Another month goes by with a lot of interest. The first event was very well attended with 19

competitors but unfortunately, the second event, although a lot of interest was indicated, only 8 people turned up (7 ladies and 1 man (me)). We appreciate it is vacation time and also the outdoor bowling season is upon us. June's events are on the 12th and the 26th at Ullesthorpe village Hall from 2.00pm until 4.00pm. Refreshments are available (free at this time). See you there (hopefully) Roy and Barbara READING GROUP Co-ordinator: Linda Patton Tel: 556996

At May's meeting we discussed "The Salt Path" by Raynor Winn, the story of her and her husband's walk along the 630-mile long South West Coast Path. It had not been their intention to tackle this walk but when they lost their home and their livelihood and when her husband was told that he had an incurable disease, they felt that they had no choice. They had no money to buy a decent tent or sleeping bags and set off poorly prepared for such a journey. The impact changed their lives forever, living at one with the wildlife, waking to hear the call of seals and struggling with very little money and food, they started to live life in the moment. We found it very difficult to imagine how anyone could have decided on this drastic action but hopefully, having read the book, we may stop to consider the situations of others rather than stereotyping them by how they appear. At our July meeting we will discuss two books: Anita Brookner's "Family and Friends" and "The Book Shop" by Penelope Fitzgerald. All are welcome to join us.

Linda HANDICRAFTS GROUP Co-ordinator Glenys Peverley Tel: 553614 We will next meet on Wednesday September 16th at Pat's home in Holly Drive, Lutterworth. We feel these activities are more suited to colder days than warm summer ones. Please contact me if you would like to join us, as we would welcome new members. Glenys

WHIST GROUP Co-ordinator: Glenys Peverley Tel: 553614 We will not meet again until Thursday, September 5th at 7:00pm in Bitteswell village hall. Glenys QUIZ GROUP Co-ordinator Sue Jones Tel: 556192 It is very frustrating to be pipped at the post by half a point, especially when you know that you should know the answers! Our team came second after a very enjoyable afternoon of quizzing. Thank you Graham for preparing such wide-ranging questions, I think you encompassed both our strengths and weaknesses very well. Thanks also to Nohline who made us the delicious scones and cakes to have with our tea. Quiz Group Diary June 13th Quiz afternoon at Glenys’s home, 7 Magnolia Drive, tel. 553614 July 11th Quiz afternoon at Dilys’s home, Ty Inney, Main St, Peatling Parva, tel. 01162 478493 Members of this group take turns to host the quiz afternoon in their homes. We do have room for a couple more members; please contact me if you would like to join us. We welcome anyone to join us when attending pub or charity quiz evenings and if you would like me to keep you informed of these events let me know. Sue Jones PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP Co-ordinator: Alan Shean Tel 283512 For our May meeting we went to Coombe Abbey Park. Showers were accurately predicted, but we managed to get good pictures of the water birds on the lake and plants and flowers in the park. We discussed how a polarising filter could assist in these conditions. Some pictures of the places we have recently visited can be viewed on the Photography page on our website. Details of our July meeting will be circulated nearer the time. Alan Shean

We decided to visit the Richard III exhibition for our April meeting as we had reached this period in our chronological journey through the history of England. We also went into the Cathedral, which was very interesting with the new stained glass windows particularly impressive. Our May meeting fell on yet another Bank Holiday so we shall not meet again until the fourth Monday in June when we shall learn about Henry VII and start to study Henry VIII and his wives. Please join us for a very friendly afternoon at which there is no pressure for any members to do anything other than listen and enjoy tea and cake if they do not wish to do any research themselves.

Linda BUFFET SUPPER GROUPS Co-ordinator: Gwenda Jones Tel: 556923 Bank Holiday Monday in May found eleven of us at the home of Carole and Mike enjoying yet another happy Buffet Supper. Carole and Mike are always very welcoming and this gave the evening a good start. As usual, excellent food was partaken of, and the conversation flowed along with the wine. Various supermarkets were given accolades or otherwise and the underhanded stunts that the nastier elements of society were inflicting on the innocent shopper were discussed and mentally recorded. An excellent evening with good friends. Many thanks to Carole and Mike. In June, we will be visiting the homes of Sue and Gordon and Katie and Howard. On

Monday July 1st the venues will be Sue and Tony Tel: 558037 and Gwenda and John Tel: 556923. Please let your chosen host know what you will be bringing and please be there by 6.45pm. Gwenda JAZZ GROUP Coordinator Graham Ruff -Tel: 556985 Five members met at Geoff Deane's home on the 28th of May. We started with a live performance from Chris Barber, who was followed by singers Mark Murphy, Ella Fitzgerald and Caro Emerald interspersed by George Shearing. The New Orleans street band Tuba Skinny played ‘at the Jazz Band Ball’ and Leicestershire lad Ben Holder played exciting violin. Sarah Vaughan was accompanied by Dizzy and Bird before fools rush in from Glen Miller. After a break for delicious refreshments, we heard from a French Band called Benoit. Then the Excelsior Vintage band took us back to New Orleans style. Norma Winstone brought us a San Diego Serenade before we heard from Sid Phillips and George Shearing. Finally Nina Simone sang and left us Feeling Good, even after recent politics had been briefly discussed Next time we will be at Graham's place, 1 Mulberry Close on the 25th June at 2.00pm Please let me know if you will be attending and as ever, if anyone would like to join us please give me a ring. The series is narrated by Andrew Graham Dixon who, as with other series that we have viewed, proved to be an interesting and insightful guide. He chronicled the way in which American art reflected the changing social and economic conditions of the time.

These led to a split between those who worried about the impact of a rampant free enterprise and who took a nostalgic look at a disappearing world of ‘old values’ and those who embraced change and took a more experimental, abstract approach to their work. Chief amongst the latter were the abstract expressionists, Jackson Pollock & Mark Rothko, whose merits were not universally acknowledged by our group. For the second half of our session we considered a favourite piece of art introduced by Rae, who had chosen ‘In The Dining Room’ by Berthe Morisot. This was an impressionist work from 1875 and was an excellent example of how an artist can give meaning through the use of thickly applied oils using broad brush strokes. The next meeting will be on Thursday 4th July (10am-12 noon) when we will be looking at the history of Baroque painting ‘from St Peter’s to St Paul’s’. Penni will be introducing a favourite piece of artwork to the group. Venue: 27, New Street Apologies to Penni (Tel 556337). Rae BIRD WATCHING GROUP Coordinator: Rita Nicholls Tel 557412 A lovely sunny morning saw us at Brandon Marsh. A bit quiet at the feeding station so, down to the woodland where the highlight was a young GS woodpecker looking out of his nest hole. Both adults coming to feed it but not brave enough to leave; tomorrow maybe. Also good views of hobby, flying and perching. Also cuckoo, including a female with its bubbling call. Also great views of linnet, a new bird for some. A total count of 49 species. Next month on June 28th we will visit Rutland Water for ospreys. 9am start from Rec car park with pack up and money for permit. Rita

SINGLES TAKEAWAY SUPPER GROUP Co-ordinator June Clayton Tel:209545 A Chinese takeaway on May 25th was as always enjoying tasty food and good humour. Our next date to meet is Friday June 28th at Brian Fowler’s home in Claybrooke Magna, for a summer ‘cold table treat’. June

LIVELY DISCUSSION GROUP Co-ordinators: Dianne and Brian Thorp Tel: 01455 209584

Eight members met for the discussion “How

much is too much salary?”

Questions asked were “How much does one

need?”, “How much is not enough?” and

“Should there be a mandatory pay ratio

between workers and management?”

We all agreed that those who have worked

hard to build a successful business deserve the

rewards that brings. However, the discrepancy

in salaries between “workers” and

management does not always reflect the level

of responsibility or education. For example, the

governor of The Bank of England gets far less

than the head of a large bank, who may

receive several million pounds in salary,

bonuses etc.

Do incentives produce more results? Could

incentives other than money be given?

At the end of the meeting, we agreed that we

cannot easily answer the question “How much

is too much salary?”

Anyone can suggest any walks for the future or if anyone would like to join us, meet at Coventry Road car park on Tues June 25th at 10:00a.m Fay GROUPS ONE AND TWO STROLLING Co-ordinator Group One: Gwenda Jones Tel: 556923 Mobile: 07986905319 Coordinator Group Two: John Lee Tel: 556923 Both strolling groups joined forces this month for our ‘nearly end’ of season joint meeting. We decided to make this a little different and more of a day out by visiting Cold Overton a village on the borders of Rutland and Leicestershire and close to Melton Mowbray. The St John the Baptist Church we visited was in the process of being refurbished with a grant from the National Lottery and therefore was not at its best. However, we found it extremely interesting and gratifying that someone still wants to preserve these churches that go back to the 12th C with so much history. The sun was shining as we made our way through the wonderful scenic journey to Rutland and the 12th C village perched 600m above sea level with panoramic views all around us. After an hour and a half exploring the church and its surroundings we visited the amazing family owned Gates’ Nursery, which surprised everyone with its extensive grounds with two lakes complete with emus and an inspirational and huge restaurant where we were treated to excellent food. After dining, everyone was free to either explore the superb up-market shopping area and garden nursery or visit other parts of Rutland. Some of us finished the afternoon in the small teashop for a coffee before setting off for home. A really great day out. Next month Group One will be visiting Foxton Village and will meet at 11am and Group Two with be visiting Stoneleigh and will meet at 10am. This is a popular walkers meeting point, and on this day, another group were meeting, also scheduled for setting off at 10am. Luckily, the landlord had everything well in hand to ensure lunch orders went on the correct list. As the other group were doing a 9 mile walk, they would be back later than us. Our walk took us through the community garden, and along West Street to Hall Lane, where after the houses ended, we took the footpath to the left, over field paths until we reached the Grand Union Canal. Walking over the bridge, we continued along the bridle path, crossing the canal another twice before we joined the towpath. Although there had been a couple of hills to ascend, from this point, the walking followed the towpath, where, approaching the Welford Cut, we stopped in the warm sunshine for our coffee. Crossing over to the cut, we made our way back to the start, going through the marina and back to the Wharf for a well-deserved lunch. 15 of the walkers chose to stay for a good lunch. Mike Chapman
