Newsletter - Winter 2019 SUCCESS – THE COURAGE TO CONTINUE One of the quesons most frequently asked by potenal residents and their families upon arriving at Rose Hill Center is, “What is your success rate?” However, this queson then becomes, what exactly is success? How is it measured? When do you measure it? Because success is a “personal” quality, that means something different to each individual, the best way to answer this queson is with “personal” stories. Several Rose Hill alumni have offered to share their own stories of success below. While living at Rose Hill, Elise worked with the kitchen team, and she found that she liked it, and that she was a good cook! Elise commented, “Over me, the staff and other residents told me that my vegan meatloaf was beer than the real thing!” Since graduang from Rose Hill, Elise has been employed in the food service industry, and is now into meal prepping (making meals ahead). Elise said, “At home I do all the cooking and my husband washes the dishes!” While parcipang in the Residenal Rehabilitaon Program, Melvin volunteered at a cemetery doing grounds keeping. He said, “I enjoy working outside, and worked hard enough that it turned into a permanent, paid posion.” He now works with the grounds keeping crew and helps set the headstones. Melvin shares an apartment in the community with another Rose Hill graduate. With this freedom and independence Melvin said, “I am able to shop, run errands, and even go snowboarding.” Roger is excited that he will soon move out of the Rose Hill Transional Living Program (independent townhouses on the Rose Hill campus) and will graduate to the Community Support Program. Currently, his main focus is going to college full me. Roger told us he plans to transfer to Michigan State University, “Because I am a big MSU fan!” He recently joined a gym, and has combined workouts with healthier eang and sleeping plans. Roger stated, “Rose Hill is a good place to center yourself, get into beer rounes, and the right medicaons help the whole process.” Although each of these alumni has taken a different route to find their own successes in life, they all have had one thing in common. Throughout their journeys, the dedicaon of the Rose Hill Center staff, innovave programming, and campus life has made a profound difference in their lives. We wish them all well on their personal paths to success! The focus of the 2018 Crain’s Detroit Business compeon was “local nonprofits using data to solve issues and beer meet their mission.” The applicaon asked for examples of “measuring and evaluang the success of projects…” For years Rose Hill has recognized the value of measuring key success factors through our Process Improvement Commiee (PIC), which was the basis of our applicaon-to evaluate the efficacy of specific programs and services to beer meet the needs of our residents and families. In our applicaon, we outlined how we enhanced the Performance Improvement Plan, which supports Rose Hill’s mission and vision, to help achieve clinical excellence, and seeks to improve paent outcomes and employee quality through data measurement and accountability. The Plan also supports staff development and growth, evaluaon of new services, and technology to enhance programming. In December, we were honored to be named as one of the four finalists in this compeon. If you’d like to learn more about Rose Hill’s programs, please contact our Admissions team at 248-531-2406.

Newsletter - Winter 2019

SUCCESS – THE COURAGE TO CONTINUEOne of the questions most frequently asked by potential residents and their families upon arriving at Rose Hill Center is, “What is your success rate?” However, this question then becomes, what exactly is success? How is it measured? When do you measure it? Because success is a “personal” quality, that means something different to each individual, the best way to answer this question is with “personal” stories. Several Rose Hill alumni have offered to share their own stories of success below.

While living at Rose Hill, Elise worked with the kitchen team, and she found that she liked it, and that she was a good cook! Elise commented, “Over time, the staff and other residents told me that my vegan meatloaf was better than the real thing!” Since graduating from Rose Hill, Elise has been employed in the food service industry, and is now into meal prepping (making meals ahead). Elise said, “At home I do all the cooking and my husband washes the dishes!”

While participating in the Residential Rehabilitation Program, Melvin volunteered at a cemetery doing grounds keeping. He said, “I enjoy working outside, and worked hard enough that it turned into a permanent, paid position.” He now works with the grounds keeping crew and helps set the headstones. Melvin shares an apartment in the community with another Rose Hill graduate. With this freedom and independence Melvin said, “I am able to shop, run errands, and even go snowboarding.”

Roger is excited that he will soon move out of the Rose Hill Transitional Living Program (independent townhouses on the Rose Hill campus) and will graduate to the Community Support Program. Currently, his main focus is going to college full time. Roger told us he plans to transfer to Michigan State University, “Because I am a big MSU fan!” He recently joined a gym, and has combined workouts with healthier eating and sleeping plans. Roger stated, “Rose Hill is a good place to center yourself, get into better routines, and the right medications help the whole process.”

Although each of these alumni has taken a different route to find their own successes in life, they all have had one thing in common. Throughout their journeys, the dedication of the Rose Hill Center staff, innovative programming, and campus life has made a profound difference in their lives. We wish them all well on their personal paths to success!

The focus of the 2018 Crain’s Detroit Business competition was “local nonprofits using data to solve issues and better meet their mission.” The application asked for examples of “measuring and evaluating the success of projects…” For years Rose Hill has recognized the value of measuring key success factors through our Process Improvement Committee (PIC), which was the basis of our application-to evaluate the efficacy of specific programs and services to better meet the needs of our residents and families.

In our application, we outlined how we enhanced the Performance Improvement Plan, which supports Rose Hill’s mission and vision, to help achieve clinical excellence, and seeks to improve patient outcomes and employee quality through data measurement and accountability. The Plan also supports staff development and growth, evaluation of new services, and technology to enhance programming. In December, we were honored to be named as one of the four finalists in this competition.

If you’d like to learn more about Rose Hill’s programs, please contact our Admissions team at 248-531-2406.

The cover article about our alumni demonstrates the benefit of working for recovery. Residents spend their days on campus and in the community engaged in activities that are meaningful and beneficial to mental health recovery. The structure of Rose Hill’s program provides individuals the time and space necessary to find their purpose in life and hone their independent living skills. They are truly working for their recovery.

But they are not alone in their endeavor. Rose Hill’s 70+ employees work right along-side each resident helping, supporting, and cheering them on as they transform their lives. It is rewarding to hear about the fulfilling lives of our alumni, and to know that we played a part in that transformation. Rose Hill employs a dedicated team of top-notch employees who address the needs of our residents, many of whom have very challenging issues.

An important quality of our staff is their knowledge of our program goals and their years of experience working with our residents. I am so pleased to report to you that almost 20% of our staff will have been employed with Rose Hill for 15 years or longer at the end of the year! And, an amazing 8 of these team members will have been employed here for over 20 years!

Please take a look at the photos on this page and recognize the dedication in the faces of our team members who give day-in and day-out to assist our residents in their path to recovery.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY By Dan and Rosemary Kelly

Another year has come and gone, and we find ourselves reminiscing about previous years, and all those who have made such a difference in our lives, and in the lives of Rose Hill residents. The title article Success-The Courage to Continue reminds us of the hundreds of individuals and families who have benefited from Rose Hill’s effective programs and services. Many of those alumni and their families have become part of the Rose Hill family and continue to be valued friends and colleagues.

We are truly blessed to have the support of family, friends, and a growing number of Rose Hill’s promoters through the years. Once a family has experienced the healing and therapeutic environment that is Rose Hill Center they often become mental health activists, board members, and donors. Their enthusiasm warms our hearts, brings a new level of commitment to our souls, and increases our feelings of good fortune and gratitude.

Over the years we have shared these stories of adversity and illness from those who suffer from debilitating symptoms of mental illness. We have shared the triumphs of learning to manage those symptoms and to go on to create a full and rewarding life. What we may not discuss enough is the experience of the families. Those mothers, fathers, sister, brothers… all the extended family members who go through this journey with their loved one – what does their future look like?

One such mother called us the other day to express how her son/daughter’s time at Rose Hill had been the first time in years she was able to sleep through the night. Countless families have told us how Rose Hill “saved their child’s life”. Those families that find Rose Hill, and become part of “our family” continue to inspire us to work to provide effective and innovative services. We value these relationships and strive to amplify the message that at Rose Hill “You are family!”
