Whats New

The season is almost here, are you ready? Trips start with Dumont in a couple of weeks, followed by Anza and then Glamis for Halloween.

RZR Addition

It’s that time of the year again, where we post monthly reports of members acquiring RZRs, and this month there is another one. Rumor has it that there is another RZR XP 900 joining the group, perhaps replacing (or supplementing?) a custom quad with a street bike motor. Congratulations Ray and Janice.

Glamis Dunes Storage to be Open for Upcoming Season

Glamis Dunes Storage, the storage lot across from the Glamis Beach Store, was at the Sand Sports Super Show and say they will be open and ready for the 2014-2015 season. This is good news for many club members who store there, and especially good news for those of us who enjoy having the yellow shop trailer at the dunes. Over the summer there was some question about the

future of the business after its owner, Michael J Mamelli Sr. was indicted on federal charges of illegally disposing of millions of gallons of sewage on June 25th. Approximately 1.25 million gallons of water were alleged to have been improperly disposed of at the storage facility in violation of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

The employees running the booth at the show said the son has taken over running the business, and that they will be open for the upcoming season.

Weeping Water Heater By Mike Bacon and Lisa Shea

I happened to notice my water heater had a puddle under it the other day. Thinking maybe one of the hoses was loose I cleaned everything up and tightened the hoses. Next day no more puddle, Yippee! Three days later though another puddle. So it's new water heater time.

Off to Home Depot. Just about killed myself loading the new water heater in the truck until the nice Home Depot guy saw me and came to help. Thanks, Ryan! Got it home and found it falls out of the truck a lot easier than it falls IN to the truck! I'm ready to do this tomorrow morning. Before I go to bed I turn off the water valve to the water heater, hook up a hose to the drain, and open the drain to let it drain over night. This will be a snap!

Next morning I come out all ready to attack! Man, this water heater sure seems heavy! I can still hear a lot of water sloshing around, and there's still a steady stream of water coming out of the hose. I go to take off the water supply hose and find out the hard way the valve that shuts the water off to the water heater doesn't shut all the way off! So it's turn off the water to the whole house and let it drain some more.

It's still surprisingly heavy three hours later so out comes the secret weapon! I bring out the skid steer tractor with forklift attachment. Lisa came over to help me so I wouldn't drop it with the tractor.

We then used the tractor to lift the new water heater in place and twenty minutes later we were heating water once again!

Extreme Makeover, Buggy Night Edition By Paul Kastle

Dean Carver recently took a trip to the East coast in his truck and trailer (something you can do when you’re retired, apparently) so while he was gone, John Cole had an idea. The first weekend he was gone, John and

I removed his sand rail from Dean’s storage container at John’s house in Phelan and hauled it down to the shop so that the buggy night group could work on it and hopefully have it ready for him once he got back from his trip. The plan began with Dean giving John the combination to his new lock, in case John wanted to use Dean’s Rhino which was also in the container. Even though John didn’t get the urge to try out the side by side, we did enjoy the easy access to the container. We used the Rhino to tow out Dean’s VW convertible, allowing access to the sand rail which had been sitting in the back of the container. After removing the sandrail, we used the Rhino to pull the

VW back in, which meant the side by side was now in the back of the container, a fact which John found amusing.

We hauled the buggy and trailer down to the shop, and despite almost loosing the hood on the freeway, it made it to the shop in tact, and we loaded up John’s 56 Ford truck frame which had been a project at the shop.

The next Tuesday, we began working to get the car running. We knew it had bad gas in it that had been sitting for years. It was some of the strongest, worst

smelling liquid I have ever dealt with. We also decided to rework Dean’s wing radiator to make it more like mine, John’s, and Barry’s, so we dug in and took the existing parts off. We also decided to

modify the cooling system to make it work more simply, so I added a thermostat housing and crossover pipe that I had saved from one of my scrap motors. Dean had never finished plumbing the radiator, so since we would be running lines we decided to do it the way that we wanted, and nobody was there to say no. As usual, a common saying was “It’s not my car.” Before I left for Coral Pink John picked up aluminum for the

new radiator wing/shroud and we came up with cardboard templates for the shape. Brandy contributed the material cost, and while I was gone they fabricated it,

and we got it mounted on the car the first Tuesday after Coral Pink. We also replaced some wiring and got the car ready to fire up, at least we hoped. We were all impressed when it fired right up, and idled on its own after only a few minutes.

The night of the big reveal was Tuesday, July 29th. Dean arrived at the shop with his grandson, who asked if the car in the shop was his. Dean at first said no, then asked what it was doing there. That’s when John uncovered it and fired it up. Dean looked to be very surprised, and was actually speechless for some time. His grandson was pretty excited too, and is looking forward to driving it out in the dunes this season. We’re all glad to see Dean planning a trip.

This month we’d like to thank Mike Bacon and Lisa Shea for writing an article. With all the upcoming activities we should have some good content for the next newsletter, which will come out in late October. In it we’ll cover the Dumont trip and perhaps the Anza poker run, although there won’t be a whole lot of time to write it up since many members are heading straight from the Poker Run to Glamis for Halloween.

P.J. and Melissa’s Big Boat Upgrade By Paul Kastle

Besides spending 10 days in Florida at Walt Disney World this month, we also upgraded our boat! John found a great deal on a really nice 2001 Maxum 21 foot sport deck with a 5.0 V8. At first we didn’t think we would be able to do anything about it, but we worked out a plan and John did his magic so while we were in Florida he called to say we were buying a boat. We picked it up on Saturday September 27th and are really excited. It is our third boat

since we’ve been married, but this is our first big boat, with an inboard / outboard V8! It also has a lot of freeboard and a beam of 8feet, 6 inches, so it should be really nice when the water gets rough. The maiden voyage will be next weekend to Silverwood, with a Fall Cottonwood trip coming up soon and a lot of Cottonwood Cove trips next summer.

The upgrade means that we have our old boat for sale now. It is a 1990 Lowe 24 foot pontoon boat with a 70hp

Evinrude. We replaced all the carpet and furniture a couple of years ago, and it is a nice pontoon boat. It isn’t fast, but it has lots of room. We’re asking $7000 for it with a tandem axle Vanson trailer. Let me know if you’re interested.
