Another busy month is ahead of us with lots of community events happening county wide. There are also opportunities for funding and training programmes so if you are interested in any of them contact the relevant person or myself and I would be happy to lead you in the right direction.

Local Events in Monaghan Urged to Apply For Community Tourism

GrantsApplication Process for 2016 Funding Opens

For Community Tourism Initiative for the Diaspora 

Monaghan County Council today announced that applications for funding are now being sought under the

Community Tourism Initiative for the Diaspora.  The initiative, launched in 2014, builds on the community involvement legacy of The Gathering 2013 and is a joint partnership between Monaghan County Council, IPB Insurance and Fáilte Ireland.

Now in its third year, the scheme provides a national fund of €1m to support local community-based events and festivals each year. Last year, 19 local events were supported in Monaghan.

Administered locally by Monaghan County Council, the application process for 2016 is now open and applications must be submitted by 5pm on 11th March 2016. Interested parties are advised to contact the Tourism Officer on 047 73718 or email [email protected] to apply. For full guidelines and application form log onto www.monaghan.ie     

Local authorities throughout the country are now accepting applications in order to determine those local events with the best potential to have the impact and long-term potential to make a difference.  The initiative is being administered at local level with the grant applications and awards being decided in accordance with agreed national criteria.

Monaghan County Council wishes to advise the public that the 2016 Housing Grants Schemes are now open and applications are being accepted for the schemes outlined below:

Monaghan Sports Partnership  / Peace Link Inclusive Multi-Sport ClubThe inclusive multi-sport club continues at the Peace Link in Clones every month and we thank Clones Photography Group for capturing some great pictures of the children last month.The inclusive club is for children with a disability from age 5 -16 years of age and their siblings and is run on a monthly basis. The next date is Saturday March 26th at the Peacelink, Clones from 1.30-3.30pm. The participants will get an opportunity to try different fun active games and activities will be conducted by qualified vetted coaches.This club is unique in that they cater for children with physical, intellectual, learning and sensory disabilities and also accommodate their

For more information or to register a child please contact the Peace Link on 047-52638. New Disability Awareness in Sport WorkshopMonaghan Sports Partnership presents a new Disability Awareness in Sport Workshop. This is an awareness building workshop aimed at anyone involved in sport or physical activity that would like to learn more about offering opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in their school, club or organisation.The first course in Monaghan is taking place March 22nd, Castleblayney Enterprise Centre from 7pm-9pm.  Limited places available. Cost is €15.To book a place please contact Dean Mc Elroy, Sports Inclusion Development Officer on 087-2623956. National Bike Week 2016Monaghan Sports Partnership on behalf of Monaghan County Council will be coordinating a series of events to take place for National Bike Week (11th – 19th June).We are currently looking for expressions of interest from community groups regarding a Bike Week event in your locality – this could be a fun event for children, an adult ‘learn to cycle’ event, bike fixing, bike to work etc. All events should be open to the general public and of a non-competitive nature and may involve local Schools where possible. The goal of Bike Week is to encourage more people to consider getting on a bike for the first time or taking out their old bike to cycle to work, school, to the shops or just for leisure.  To request an expression of interest form, please contact the Sports Partnership Office at 042-9755126. Walk this Way – Monaghan Walking Leader Training Course The Irish Heart Foundation in conjunction with Monaghan Sports Partnership and HSE Health Promotion will run a Community Walking Leader Training Course, April 23rd-24th in Monaghan Town (venue TBC).  The training is primarily aimed at those wishing to lead a local walking group or promote walking in their community or workplace.  The course comprises of a weekend of training and a follow up 4 week leader task to try out your new walking leader skills.   Irish Heart Foundation, HSE Health Promotion and Sport Ireland are subsidising the course and there is a nominal fee of €50 which will cover your training, materials and two lunches.  The course will run on Saturday April 23rd, 9am-5pm and Sunday April 24th, 9am-2.00pm.

During the weekend you will gain a greater understanding of the health benefits of walking, learn to develop and lead a local walking session for mixed fitness levels, receive advice on starting a new walking group or promoting an existing group and gain a greater understanding of posture, technique, stretching and safety issues for a successful walk.   Set yourself on the path to success and keep your New Year’s resolutions on track.  For more information on the course or to register please contact Monaghan Sports Partnership office at 042-9755126 before 31st March. Also please feel free to pass this information on to anyone you know.

Local Enterprise Week 2016, March 7th to 13thAs part of the first nationally co-ordinated 'Local Enterprise Week' Monaghan Local Enterprise Office will host and support a number of events from March 7th to 13th 2016.

The week is co-ordinated by Monaghan LEO but supported by key partners and agencies in the county who have a remit to support businesses and enterprise.Aimed at anyone thinking of starting a business, new start-ups and growing SMEs, events include workshops, seminars, networking evenings and business advice clinics.

So, we’re now inviting communities who wish to have an energy audit carried out on premises they own to come forward. Premises include community centres, community-owned businesses, community owned residential accommodation...... if you have an idea, contact Carol Lambe on [email protected].

Your community is also free to develop up its own scheme and apply for funding in its own right. See article on ‘Better Energy Communities Scheme’ down in the ‘Sustainability Matters’ section of this newsletter.

NEW LOCAL BUS ROUTES IN MONAGHAN TOWN

The Transport Co-Ordination Unit (TCU) which looks after rural transport in Co Monaghan has introduced a local bus service around Monaghan town. There is a small fare for using the service – but when you count in the pay parking charge, it’s well worth using. If you’re over 65 with a free bus travel pass, you and your companion may use this service for free. You can get more information on www.cmtcu.ie

1916 Commemorative Lecture by Dr. Fearghal McGarry, QUB and Author of ‘Rebels: Voices from the Easter Rising' and 'The Abbey Rebels of Easter 1916  Clones Library, Monday 7th March @ 7pm.   The Abbey Theatre played a leading role in the politicisation of the revolutionary generation

speed limits on roads (National, regional and local) in the county as well as housing estates.

The new Special Speed Limit Bye-Laws are to be operational by April 2017.

Monaghan County Council INVITE SUBMISSIONS as part of this review in relation to housing estates and all other roads within the county, particularly where you have concerns regarding the posted speed limit and speed of vehicles. These will be taken into consideration in accordance with the above Guidelines.

Please join in and be part of ESB Tree Week, the Tree Council of Ireland invites you to organise one or more events for the week. As well as tree planting ceremonies, the range of events can include forest and woodland walks, nature trails, workshops, woodturning displays, listening to the trees and what lives in the trees. Talks, tree climbing, broadcasts, launches, concert poetry readings, exhibitions, dramas, free trees donated by Coillte.

Monaghan IWT Reptile Surveyor Workshop, 05th March, Ballybay Wetland Centre

Become a Citizen Scientist in 2016 and Help Protect your Wildlife

As part of the National Reptile Survey the Irish Wildlife Trust is running a Reptile Surveying Workshop for volunteer surveyors in the Monaghan area.

The workshop will take place at the

Ballybay Wetland Centre on

05th March from 10:00 A.M to 15:30 P.M

This is a great opportunity to learn more about Ireland's reptiles while helping protect your wildlife. Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided with this workshop and participants will receive a certificate of completion. So come along to find out more about your native wildlife and enjoy an interesting day in Ballybay.

Booking is essential for this workshop as spaces are limited. Workshops are free of charge for IWT members and cost €10 for non members (the workshop fee goes to the IWT, a registered charity). To book a place on these workshops contact us on [email protected] or 086 1944 106.

SENIORS ALERT SCHEMEThere have been changes recently to how you apply for assistance under the Seniors Alert Scheme. This is the scheme which supplies things like personal alarms to vulnerable older people. The Scheme has moved to Pobal, and local groups who are interested in rolling out the scheme in their locality have to re-apply to be placed on the list of groups a person may contact if they wish to avail of the Scheme.
