James Stuart McDougall (Jim)    10/5/1941  1/3/2016  James Stuart McDougall (Jim), 74, died on on March 1st 2016                     after a long battle with cancer. He passed peacefully                 surrounded by family and friends.  Jim was born in Whyalla on May 10, 1941. He was a student of                           Whyalla high school and then worked for BHP in 1959 as                     apprentice fitter and turner -- winning South Australian               apprentice of the year. He then went on to study mechanical                     engineering at the Institute of Technology in Whyalla,               returning as a draftsman at BHP and progressed to be a                     mechanical engineer. Later he took engineering manager roles               for Titan Engineering in Whyalla, Emco Wheaton in Eudunda,                 Yalumba Wines in the Barossa Valley and Bliss Automotive in                   Adelaide. He was the proud inventor of many innovations,                 including the patented “MacVac” wine storage tank system.  He was well known among the model aero clubs in Whyalla                     and Barossa Valley for his relentless and life long passion of                     model aircraft. Starting with control-line planes, he moved

onto racing remote-control planes, becoming known as “unbeatable for fastest times” and winning the                           South Australian title several times. Later his passion moved to gliders, including a yearly pilgrimage to                               Jerilderie for the annual thermal competitions -- with an ongoing well known battle to win the coveted Tia                                   Maria or Whisky prize.   Jim loved cars, with many stories surrounding the low flying Mini Cooper S in the ‘60s, followed later by                                     his love affair to his fleet of Italian cars - Fiat’s and Alfa Romeos, recently fulfilling his dream of acquiring                                       a brand new Guiletta.  He is survived by his lifetime partner of 50 years, Heather McDougall and sister Jan Roberts. Jim may not                                     have known it at the time, but he was being noticed by Heather when she was just 4 years old -- and later                                             they became soul mates while working together at the BHP drawing office.   He was a loving father to Richard, Susan and Nicolas, and caring grandfather to Lucy, Harry, Madison,                                 Boston and Oliver.   Jim passed on many great values including his passion for building, fixing things and his meticulous                               approach to engineering. He was always keen to help -- whether it was building model planes, kitchens or                                   sheds, fixing cars or teaching his many skills.   He loved organising adventurous outback holidays and road trips with his family and friends leaving                             behind a passion for travel and exploration.  His sense of humour and no nonsense attitude was with him till the very end.  The service will be held in the Heysen Chapel at Centennial Park, 760 Goodwood Rd, Pasadena on Wednesday the 9th of March at 3pm.

“BEWARE PROPELLERS....THEY’RE ALL DANGEROUS”4

The day was a great success with a lot of interest shown in the range of models on display.

Gary Harris had the patience of a saint assisting all comers try their hand with a computer simulator

of a R/C aircraft. It was in demand most of the day.

One of the amusing comments made by a couple of parents was “OK one more crash and someone

else can have a go”

ORAM at the Mt Pleasant Show Following a rapid email around regarding attendance at the Mt Pleasant show and a heartfelt plea to the organisers we were able to obtain a very handy site at the show. A new tent to fit the site was acquired, our wonderful members put up their hands to look after the site plus models and at 8.00am we were all present to erect the tent, set up tables and enough models to fit on the tables. Next important erection was the raising of the MASA “Bendy Banana “ flags which were a real asset as no one else had these along our road and so it helped to make our stand a real eye catcher. The Mt Pleasant show is extremely popular and we were amazed at the large numbers of people attending. As you can imagine we were looking forward to interesting Fathers and their sons and daughters in our wonderful hobby. I’m happy to say we had a very busy day and we are obviously hopeful that all the brochures we handed out will bring some fruit and hopefully new members. I could not believe the number of times a conversation would start along the lines “ Oh, I used to build models when I was a kid attached to some wires - I’d fly and crash and rebuild during the week “ This would lead into a conversation regarding the use of “buddy leads” and the inherent safety margin when using this method. Numerous strawberries and ice cream plus a doughnut or two and a coffee made the day a very Mt Pleasant (groan) one. Of additional interest one could visit cattle and Alpaca judging, Machines of yester-year, marvellous tractors and cutting decks (you can only dream) etc., so there was plenty to see and do apart from talking to people about our wonderful models. Models made available included Harvey’s “Taube”, Mark’s Small Cygnet, David’s “Bixler”, Peter’s Marjali and Skybolt, Andrew’s “Piper PA-38 Tomahawk II”, Ron’s Red and White aerobat, a helicopter and Quadcopter and to round off Murray brought his NGH 17cc spark ignition petrol motor, so there was a good smattering of everything we do to show off to those interested. Finally my thanks to President Mark, Harvey, Murray, Ron, David, Andrew and Knuth for giving up their free time all day to make our attendance at Mt Pleasant an easy day with the opportunity to sit and have a rest or go for a wander as well as raving on about our models to those who came to our site. Cheers, Peter Wiadrowski

“BEWARE PROPELLERS....THEY’RE ALL DANGEROUS”

Scale Aerotow March 2016 by Don Howie

The event had flyers from as far as Port Augusta and the Barossa Valley. Constellatin provided two tug planes, the one by Trevor Pearce being a Morris the Knike, this red model shown nearest in the photo is the shade of the pits.

It was powered with a low cost 55cc CRRC twin petrol engine turning a 22x10 prop. The most impressive tug plane was the 3.3 metre span Piper Pawnee 235 flown by Kevin Bartlett. This Hanger 9

model at 20 Kg flying weight was powered with a twin 111cc DLE petrol engine turning a 27x10 prop. It has a 3 litre fuel tank and after launching large scale gliders from 9am to 12pm it was still ½ full of fuel. The use of petrol engines with low oil mix makes flying quire economical.

Phil Dutton from Barossa Club had his 3 metre Musger 19B Sternadler from 1956 and the model was scratch built from plans. Phil even moulded the canopy and the two pilots were made from scratch. All the ribs were different so he did get them laser cut. The model was finished with polyester shrink covering and enamel finish. One does not need a large model for Aerotow and models from 3 metre span and larger are suitable.

Trevor Pearce and Mike Savill from Constellation flew

large scale gliders on the day, that had quite calm conditions. The model by Trevor was a Rekin PWS 102 Polish glider at 4.9 metres with a weight of 9 ½ kilos. The model was painted yellow, but when the gliders from the 1960’s were first made in Germany with fiberglass, they were painted whitw to refl;ect the heat.

I remember in the late 1950’s Edmund Schneider with his son Harry from Germany were making and designing full size gliders at Parafield Airport.

These were all wood and fabric aircraft and one aircraft I flew in was the E.S. 49 model, showing just how many different aircraft Edmund had designed. I even remember making full size ribs at the Adelaide Soaring Club premises at Mitcham using casein glue and brass pins to hold the wooden components together.

Most impressive model was the 6.6 metre span scale Antares glider, flown by Kevin Jolly from Port Augusta. The country that produces scale model large gliders is the Czech Republic and thet make amazinf figerglass aircraft. The “Antares” was made by Jeri Baudis and the colour, white with red tips moulded into the finish,. In the photos, Kevin is shown next to Kevin Bartlett from CMFC,the glider shown lifting off, then climbing away with the tug plane.

Battle damage repairs

As mentioned in a previous article, my Fokker DVII was shot down during

a spirited combat sortie. Fortunately the damage was not too severe and I was able to make satisfactory repairs.

The first task was to build a new set of tail feathers. Two options were available, cut the finicky pieces myself or have them cut by club member Bob McEwin who is a CAD/CNC cutting guru. I chose the latter and soon had a set of

precisely cut components which assembled easily. A section of fuselage beneath the tailplane had a gash caused by my opponent’s propeller. This was quickly repaired before the new tail feathers were installed together with a new tail wheel and support bracket.

Next task was repairing the nose section. I decided that instead of fully rebuilding the cowling I’d simply tidy up the front end and leave the engine exposed. The DVII is my combat hack and who knows when another mid-air will occur? The front end was duly tidied up.

A few other minor repairs were undertaken, mainly re-gluing parts that separated when the earth rushed up to meet the DVII. Top and bottom wings were removed and checked for damage. The aileron servos had stripped their gears so new ones were installed. The aircraft was reassembled, taking care to ensure all wing strut mounting points were secure and the correct decalage set (bottom wing 0o, top wing -1.5o). The incidence meter makes this a straightforward job.

A thorough check of the aircraft, including a check of the CofG, and she was ready for a post-repair flight. The day of the test flight was ideal, a gentle northerly breeze; my favourite direction. Fuel up, range check, control check, start engine. The engine fired immediately but needed a bit of tuning; however, the needle valve would not move. A close look and it became obvious that the casting at the base of the needle valve was damaged when the aircraft hit the ground inverted. It was a tiny crack but enough to stop any tuning adjustment being made. Oh well, de-fuel, go home and order a new carburettor assembly.

“BEWARE PROPELLERS....THEY’RE ALL DANGEROUS”12

A couple of days later the new carby arrived. Two minutes to fit and ready for the next test fly attempt. The next weekend was a repeat of the previous one, gentle northerly. This time the engine was tuned as expected. Good to go. I thought it prudent to have an assistant to help with trimming, so I co-opted Pete Robertson (the pilot who shot me down) to do the honours. As it turned out I certainly needed his help. The DVII wanted to climb and the only way I could control it was to keep holding in down elevator (even though on the ground the elevator setting appeared level). After a few circuits and with Pete’s help the trim was finally sorted. Landing was a comfortable affair, as was taxying back to the flight line. OK, happy with that.

Back home I re-adjusted the elevator throw and brought the trim back to centre. She’s all ready for combat again, just waiting for the order to scramble. Chocks away!

Flying at ETSA Parkwith the Phoenix

The Phoenix Event Report: Indoor Flying in Adelaide, March 2016

Another big crowd rocked up for the March indoor meeting at ETSA Park. It was great to see members from Noarlunga, Holdfast, SSL, Hummocks, Constellation, AMA and more in attendance. There were slightly less quadcopters and helicopters compared to last month, but an increase in UM warbirds and aerobatic models, and plenty of indoor aerobatic shock flyers. Sadly, this is the last indoor event at ETSA Park until Thursday August 18th due to clashes with netball matches in winter. We are pursuing alternate venues, but we will be back at ETSA in August.

“BEWARE PROPELLERS....THEY’RE ALL DANGEROUS”16

South Australian State Championships held at Adelaide Model Aerosport, Monarto March 12th to 14th 2016

Racing Round UpBlue skies, light winds and a warm temperatures on Saturday and Sunday were enjoyed by a small but keen group

of team race fliers from SA, Victoria, WA and the ACT F2C Heat 1 saw Fitzgerald / Ellins proving their pedigree with a time of 3.04.03, showing a clean pair of heels to Leknys

/ Reichart 3.40.05 and Justic / Lacey with a 3.57.78. The second heat was to have featured Wilson / Poschkens, Leknys / Reichart and Bainbridge / Walton. Duncan had not flown F2c for a number of years and unfortunately crashed in practice resulting in a wrecked model. Despite the setback Duncan decided to go again with a spare and started well, managing to keep up with Murray and Ryan until 48 laps, when he was caught behind the model and another crash resulted.

As the heats progressed Wilson / Poschkens achieved 2.59.80 in a ‘two up’, an unofficial world record as it was not achieved at a World or Continental championship. On Sunday, Justic / Lacey recorded an excellent 3.13.33 and Fitzgerald / Ellins were very consistent with 3.04.56.

Sunday’s final teams were Fitzgerald / Ellins, Wilson / Poschkens and Justic / Lacey. Fitzgerald / Ellins were off the ground first, followed closely by Justic / Lacey. Both teams model were all carbon and both very quick. Murray and Mark’s balsa model languished in the pits and it took some furious flicking until they were in the air. The racing was very close and without incident until Wilson / Poschkens pitstop cost valuable seconds and Justic / Lacey withdrew at 146 laps, leaving Rob and Mark to finish easy winners.

1st Fitzgerald / Ellins – 6.15.212nd Wilson / Poshkens – 6.51. 423rd Justic / Lacey DNF 146 LapsCombined Speed Murray Wilson and Richard Justic put in some practice flights with their F2A models but did not

compete due to technical issues. Duncan and David were up first with the 1/2A Diesel Proto, powered by a Fora RIRE, which looked promising but didn’t quite fulfill. It was Duncan’s first time in the pylon. Maris Dislers also flew a 1/2A Diesel Proto and put in two blistering flights. He also flew his Midge as this class allows multiple entries

Richard Justic entered a spectacular Class III Rossi 60 mono-line asymmetric model. Some spectators considered hiding behind the hut. This model was very fast and very noisy, but most impressive!

Harry Bailey campaigned his veteran Mini Goodyear powered by an Enya diesel which went well, but not quickly as Ken Hunting’s 1/2A Proto which gave Maris a real run for his money! After the tabulation, the results showed that 1/2A Diesel Protos reigned supreme.

1st Maris Dislers - 99.8% 1/2A Proto2nd Ken Hunting – 98.7% 1.2A Proto3rd Richard Justic – 97.4% Class IIIF2F Due to only 3 entries only a 3 up final was flown. Murray had his much hyped new red model with a carbon wing.

The SA team of Qantas 747 2nd Officer Alan Morris and Maris Dislers with a Nelson FISE in a Mike North built model, also with a carbon wing..

Unfortunately, like the American Rap band “Public Enemy” famously said don’t “Believe the hype!” Murray’s pitman Steve Walton could not get his motor to run. The old faithful of Hunting Bailey flew to an easy victory while Morris Dislers suffered a damaged tank resulting in less than optimal setting but Alan was very happy to be able complete the race and come in second.

1st Hunting / Bailey - 9.41.342nd Morris / Dislers – 11.03. 123rd Wilson / Walton – DNSClassic FAI had five entries, all teams flying beautifully presented models from the golden years of F2C. After the draw

was posted it seemed there would be some interesting pairing of teams as Mark Poshkens and Mark Ellins both elected to fly with their regular pilots taking the pitting roles.

Another Qantas pilot, Paul Cameron teamed up with ‘pitman for hire Steve Walton’, flying a fantastic looking Russian design from the 1970s.

Ron Lacey and Richard Justic competed with a period model of Ron’s from the 1970s. Ken and Harry were flying a very attractive model. Murray and Rob’s models appeared almost identical.

In Heat 1 Justic / Lacey had problems and retired to allow Ron Lacey to get the model sorted for the second heat. The piece de resistance was the race between Poshkens / Wilson and Ellins / Fitzgerald, both teams were off quickly, but it was apparent that both pilots had spent too long on the oily end, so there were a few ‘moments ‘ Ellins / Fitzgerald ahead Poshkens / Wilson.

The final was a very clean race, well flown by all pilots. Harry Bailey unfortunately lost a wheel causing minor damge to his beautiful model, so a DNF.

1st Justic / Lacey - 8.53.152nd Cameron / Walton – 9.09.753rd Bailey / Hunting – DNF 148 Laps

Open Goodyear Flown for the first time at the SA State Champ in many years, all were soon reminded it is very noisy. Rob Fitz’s modified Taipan in a carbon Argander was the star of the show. Richard’s Nelson powered fiberglass American model was also on the pace when Ron could get it started. The WA team of Leknys / Walton couldn’t get their motor to run nor could Bailey / Hunting who had problems with a new Nova Rossi. They resorted to their 27/10 Goodyear model. Wilson / Poschkens elected to withdraw due to tank problems

After a few false starts Fitzgerald / Poshkens / Stephens posted a4.20.62, and Justic / Lacey 6.14.84.For the final the CD invited Bailey / Hunting into the circle to ensure that it was a three up, the diesel was first in the

air, Fitz /Poschkens /Stephens were favourites, as Ron Lacey had trouble restarting at pit stops. Att 105 laps, disaster

struck when the down line of the Justic model broke, resulting in loops until the green Ohm Special hit the ground, fortunately only taking out the undercarriage and the prop. In the postmortem it was discovered that the line had failed at the internal bobbin.

Mark Poschkens couldn’t

get it run, it was very tight perhaps due to the sudden temp drops overnight. This left the Super Tigre G20 powered Ohm Special of Wilson / Walton to fight it out with Morris / Dislers Fora powered Old Blue. The 100 lap final was an anticlimax as most of the race was flown ’one up’.

Russell Bond was well ahead of the rest of the field and was deserving winner of the Brian Horrocks Memorial F2B Cup for the second time in 3 years. Two rounds were flown each day on Saturday and Sunday in near perfect conditions. Note each round score has been rounded to the nearest point only for publication space purposes. The final score is correct to two decimal places.

In Advanced F2B the fight for first place was much more interesting. Alan was ahead after day one but Jeff flew really well in round 3 in perfect conditions whereas Alan seemed to have a problem with his controls, possibly a hooked up line clip. Round featured periods of gusty thermal activity which affected all entrants scores so Jeff hung on to achieve first place. John Barbara unfortunately crashed in practice so opted not to fly his back up model.

Classic Stunt was flown after F2B on Saturday. Conditions were excellent. Peter Koch won for the second year in succession. Tony Clifford came all the way form Ulladulla in NSW and flew nicely particularly in round 2. Jeff Fry after motor problems cut short his first round got a good run and flew his ex Jon Leditschke Grondal AMA Special into a well deserved 3rd place.

Vintage stunt on Sunday afternoon started with a moderate breeze which became much stiffer in Round 2. The top 3 decided to save their models after the first round. Maris’ managed to forget the wingover and his burping motor barely made it through the end of the pattern, but good shapes and a high static score still gave him a comfortable margin over Tony Clifford’s nicely finished Atwood glow powered Jamison Nats Favourite. Mal Dyer and Peter Koch tussled for 3rd place. Mal’s excellent documentation gave him the edge over Peter Koch in Static points and sealed third place for him after a tidy Round 1 flight.

Australian F3J International RC Glider Event Milang South Australia March 2016

This major annual RC thermal soaring event was held at the SSL field at Milang SA. Near perfect conditions faced the 27 competitors on Saturday. Light southerly winds and temperatures in the mid 20’s. 7 qualifying rounds were

flown on the Saturday and a further 5 on Sunday morning with the fly-off rounds commencing after lunch. The top 7 pilots after qualifying went into a 3 round fly-off to determine the winner. Stronger winds and less thermals were evident as these competitors aimed for a 15 minute flight after a 3-5 second launch on the electric winches that were used throughout the competition. This was the only deviation from the FAI International rules. There were 2 pilots competing from New Zealand; multi time World Champion Joe Wurts and multi time New Zealand Team member Kevin Botherway. They headed the scoreboard after the qualifying rounds but the pressure was on in the fly-offs. Fortunately the Aussies put on some heat and prevented a Kiwi 1-2.

CATEGORY REPORTS.

Control Line The MASA CL State Champs were held on March long weekend at Adelaide Model Aerosport. Perfect Weather on Friday, Saturday and Sunday coupled with strong interstate attendance made for a very enjoyable event.A report has been submitted to the editor for inclusion in the April MASA newsletter.

Adelaide Aeromodellers have unfortunately had their use of Park 19 Unley Rd significantly impacted due to Unley Rangers soccer club having been granted a sublease by the primary lease holder Adelaide City Juniors. Last Saturday was the first round which featured 4 ‘home’ matches. Parking for AAC members was nonexistent after midday and flying was halted for the rest of the afternoon at 1pm when a match started adjacent to the sole pitch left available AAC due to players running into the flying area numerous times to retrieve balls kicked out of bounds plus foot traffic before and after matches by large numbers of players and spectators In terms 2 and 3 school soccer will also take place on Saturday mornings.

Adelaide Aeromodellers President and Secretary will with Adelaide Juniors and Unley Rangers next Tuesday to discuss strategies to minimize soccer matches impact on safe model flying at Park 19. AAC will also approach the Adelaide City Council to enquire about alternative flying sites such as the vacant area to the west of Ellis Park.

On a more positive note, Constellation MFC will hold their CL day on April 24th. T

The CL World Championships in Perth begin in just over 4 weeks. A number of MASA CL members will travel to either compete or officiate in the World Cup curtain raiser and the main event. Everyone involved is very much looking forward to what promises to be the largest aeromodelling event in Australia for many years. Over 200 competitors, 40 team managers and assistants and 140 registered supports from 33 countries will attend the first CL World Champs ever in the Southern Hemisphere. It will be an event to be remembered for many years. The small team of WA Aeromodellers have done a superb job of preparing the site and organizing the event so far Hopefully Mother Nature will give them the support the richly deserve as they have left nothing else to chance.

Regards, Peter.

GENERAL BUSINESS

1. MASA Website: The treasurer gave a short presentation and progress report to the meeting on transposing content onto the new website software. A few refinements are yet to be included before the cutover. The presentation highlighted the ease of adding and removing content with little web experience. The new software can also accommodate smaller clubs without access to a website the ability to create their own club webpage typically for newsletters and event calendars etc.

2. MASA / Club Banner Flags: Responses back from club delegates indicated interest from ORAM, Southcoast, Strathalbyn, South Hummocks and Pt Lincoln clubs to participate in the joint venture. MASA will now obtain quotes based on type of banner and maximisation of club artwork.

Motion: Moved by HMAC seconded by SMAC that banners (2 per club) be acquired by MASA and cost shared with clubs on a 50/50 basis.

3. MAAA National Conference Agenda: MASA is now in possession of the 2016 agenda. The VP will review the document and report back to the May meeting with relevant items requiring any consolidation of the MASA vote.

4. NMAC Grant ineligibility. The president attended a function hosted by Sport SA and took the opportunity to convey our concerns in regard to Model Aerosport access to grants. Several other member bodies present at the function expressed the same concerns with their activities. The issue is to be followed up and pursued further with Sport SA and ASIC.
