As usual, members have been generous in acknowledging the contribution our staff make each year towards our enjoyment of the game. In turn, our staff have extended Christmas wishes to all members.

None of us could have been unaware of the recent horrendous fires, and as a token of appreciation I confirm that $830.00 which accumulated during 2019 in our Wrong Bias jar, has been donated to the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Now, 2020 is upon us, with Club Championship entries due, Open G e n d e r b o w l s , i m p e n d i n g Clubhouse renovations, Australia Day, etc.

Please note that the Clubhouse renovations are scheduled to commence on Monday 3rd February, and hopefully be c o mp l et ed b y e nd M ar c h 2020 .Access to all other club facilities will be maintained throughout the works programme, including bar access from the Eastern doors.

hello

hope members enjoyed a peaceful and happy Christmas period. We all hope that the New Year is successful, and that nature treats us kindly.

Our Christmas party was a great success with presentations to an a r r a y o f m e m b e r s f o r championships, competitions, most improved, etc. Congratulations to all involved.

Similarly, a very colourful gathering enjoyed the Sparkle of the season at our Fun Day. Brian Spear acted as Head Honcho distributing marbles a n d d i s c i p l i n i n g a n y misdemeanours. Indeed, he even fined your President a marble for suggesting that the presence of red dots on his bowls unfairly imbalanced his bowls! Awards were made to the winning team, and numerous other participants. Awards also were made to the most stylish outfit, the most irreverent, and the most outlandish.

The greenkeepers have returned the School green to its pristine best, and I am pleased to see members treating it with due respect by refraining from dumping bowls, and adhering to the “white dot” minimum distance for the mat placement.

Cleveland, Sue Buchanan and Margaret Lang.

The entry form for our first championship event – the Fours— is on the board and several teams have already entered. The closing date is in January so please organise your team and put your names down.

The district events - the Fours, Pairs and Mixed Pairs are open now. Entries close on 23 January 2020. Entry forms are on the noticeboard.

December was a busy month socially, with the Christmas Party and the Presidents’ fun day. Both events were very enjoyable. Thank you to the members who worked hard to make these days a big success. Special thanks to Caroline Duhigg, my vice president, who stepped in for me on Presidents’ day.

Cheers

e are off to an exciting new year with plenty of challenges for the committees' with Open Gender and grading.

Daniel Gatt, Managing CEO of Womens’ Bowls NSW resigned in December. The committee have assured the members that things will run smoothly in 2020. It will be a challenging time for the committee with discussions regarding the merger of Bowls NSW and Womens’ Bowls NSW.

Our club will work through the changes and keep our members informed. We have several members who have put their name down for open gender.

Congratulations to the winners of the Summer Fours. The team of Sue Addison, Loyce Davis, Kay Balnaves and Joan Shead narrowly defeated the team of Trish Tamaoki, Betty-Anng iouootoo

Our thanks to Presidents Cathy and Paul for putting on a truly fun day to wind up the bowling year! It was a day with a difference this year, and everyone not only got into the theme of the day, but obviously enjoyed it thoroughly. the bowling.......

Over 100 Mosman members enjoyed our annual Christmas Luncheon, and where the various Championship and Competition winners through the year

were presented w i t h t h e i r trophies. The mood was joyous, and the long-table settings seemed to please most of the guests. We were once again entertained by the Blue Jays, Mosman High Music Master Jeff Longhurst and his lovely and talented vocalist daughter Jacqui. Congratulations to all our t rophy winners, and especially to the Peter McAdam Volunteer of the Year awardee, Ian Fielden. And many thanks to everyone who helped make this day so successful - too many to list individually - and to Jennifer and Rhian who gave up their Sunday for us.

Tell us a little about yourself – family, career before retirement, hobbies/ sports played, any unforgettable moments etc.

I was born in Denman, a small town in the Upper Hunter region of N.S.W. where my father was the local Manager of the Bank of N.S.W. (now Westpac). I went to the local public school until the age of 11 when my father was transferred to Sydney as Manager of their Beecroft Branch. I was booked into PLC Pymble as a boarder but they accepted me in Year 6 as a daygirl. Having come from a very small school into such a large school was very daunting and I really did not

recover from that ordeal.

At the age of 12 my father died and my mother and I were forced to leave the bank home and move to a small home in Thornleigh. I had my first overseas trip to New Zealand at the age of 14. My mother and I flew into Christchurch and

Wellington and then did a coach tour of the North Island.

During our time in Thornleigh, my mother remarried and we moved to Gordon. After completing the Leaving Certificate, I did a 12 month course at Miss Hales Business College which I enjoyed. After graduating from there, I obtained a position as a stenographer with a Norwegian Shipping Company who were agents for various cargo lines as well as Scandinavian Airlines. I did various secretarial duties and eventually became Manager of their 12 passenger cargo ships. During that

time I was fortunate enough to make several trips to New Guinea, Hong Kong and North Borneo.

My stepfather passed away in 1965 and once again my mother and myself were on our own.

In 1970, I married Geoff, a sea Captain whom I had met at a Swedish Christmas function. We had some interesting trips together to Bali (only 2 hotels then), Thailand and Hong Kong. In 1971 Thai International flew into Sydney. With only one flight a week, the inaugural guests were forced to stay 7 days. I was involved in entertaining the group which included arranging dinner parties, harbour cruises and travel agents’ functions. Among the guests were James A. Michener and his

wife together with many dignitaries from Thailand. A very exciting time for me.

In 1972 I left Thai/SAS to have my daughter, Jane, never to work again. No maternity leave in those days. Prior to returning to work in 1979 as a part timer with the same Company, I was on the committee of Belmont Road Pre-school where I met Ann Barron, Mosman Infants School, helped children with their bible readings at Scots Kirk and became a Brown Owl. I continued these duties until 1983. In 1984 SAS opened their own office and split from Thai so I worked for Thai in the morning and SAS in the afternoon. I rejoined Thai in 1987 working in our Cargo office and eventually came back to our city office as Personal Assistant to 8 very different General Managers which entailed housing them, arranging

schooling for their children and looking after their wives as well as do my normal duties in the office.

In 1996, Geoff died after a long illness but I kept working until I retired in 2006. After retirement, I helped look after my

mother until she passed away at the age of 105.

I have two unforgettable moments. Firstly, to celebrate the Golden Wedding Anniversary of their Majesties, the King and Queen of Thailand in 2000, our Head Office asked my boss to arrange a concert at the Opera House. It was to be

attended by their 2 daughters and their grandchildren. Naturally, I was given the task of organising the event. The Opera

Page 10: NEWSLETTERNEWSLETTER - Mosman Bowling Club€¦ · will be able to resume after renovations are completed. The deck and some of the chairs have been sealed. At the December BoardAt

House was booked and the hotel accommodation for Royalty was arranged at the Intercontinental, close to the Opera House where George Bedwani was the then General Manager. Travel Agents, Embassy and Consular Officials from everywhere were invited to attend and every Thai in Australia wanted an invitation to be with Royalty for this gala event. Arranging the correct seating and handing over the tickets was a nightmare but it was a great success in the end. During this memorable concert my boss at the time was Kn Pundhuwat Komarakul na Nakorn (not an easy name to say when answering the phone). Fortunately for me most Thai people use their

first name only which makes it much easier. Kn or Khun can be Mr. or Mrs. Very confusing.

The other memorable moment was my flight to Copenhagen on 17 th July, 2014. We boarded our flight to Singapore to connect with another flight to Copenhagen. We were delayed departing Singapore due to an incident in the Ukraine and we were forced to take on extra fuel as we may be diverted. When we arrived in Copenhagen the next day, we were informed of the Malaysian Airlines disaster. However, we enjoyed Denmark,

Scotland and Norway on this five week trip.

My only claim to fame is my Great Uncle together with my Grandfather founded Mackay in Queensland. They

came from Inverness in Scotland and settled in the New England area around Uralla.

I enjoy my bowls, tennis and golf and volunteer in an Aged Care Facility making coffee and serving cakes to the

residents which is very rewarding. My family live on the Gold Coast and I try to visit them as often as I possible.

How were you introduced to bowls and why Mosman Bowling Club. My parents together with volunteers from the local community started Denman Bowling Club in the mid 40’s and therefore I was introduced to the game of bowls at a very young age. I was literally bought up on a bowling green. When we were transferred to Sydney, my parents joined Beecroft Bowling Club. After my father died, my mother joined Asquith, then Gordon and during that time she became Secretary and then President of the Past Presidents Association for 12 months, visiting many country clubs and enjoying the experience very much. As a

result I had to become a bowler when I retired.

I was introduced to Mosman Bowling Club by John Rock. I was invited, together with his then tennis friends to his 60th birthday at the club. Prior to dinner, we had a roll up for fun. This gave me the opportunity to join the club in 2004 but did not become a regular bowler until 2007 when I retired. Another incentive was I can walk to

the club.

Which was your most memorable game or win and why? My most memorable win was the minor singles. It only took me 10 years to obtain this win. “I was always the bridesmaid, never the bride”. Another memorable game was reaching the final of the District Triples with Judy

Moyes and Trish Tamaoki against Neutral Bay.

What do you particularly enjoy about bowls?

I enjoy the friendly atmosphere. One is never lonely playing bowls and it is also very good exercise.

How would you like to see Mosman BC develop or improve further? It is great as it is but maybe members should be encouraged to pass on to friends and relatives the pleasure of

playing bowls at such a wonderful club.

What advice do you have for new bowlers? New bowlers should be encouraged to enter competitions, gala days and carnivals to obtain more knowledge of

the game and play at as many different clubs as possible. Do not wait to be asked, put your name down.

I hope you all had a very happy Christmas, and every best wish for

the New Year.

As mentioned in the last Newsletter, over the next few months

leading up to pennant, I will be sharing with you some of the key points from the Karen

Murphy Coaching seminar I attended recently. This month it is Process over Outcome. (In

this point Karen refers to “mental coaches” – I’m not sure if we have any of those at

Mosman, I’ll have to leave that for you to decide!)

Process over outcome

Most top players, especially those who work with mental coaches, adopt what’s called a

“process over outcome” approach. Club bowlers on the other hand tend to fall into a result

orientated mindset.

Focusing on the process means staying in the moment, taking one bowl at a time. The

player repeats the same ritual of steps before playing their bowl. In other words, he/she

thinks only about those things he can control – and that excludes big picture consequences

that may affect his/her score, ie - not getting ahead of themselves.

Results orientated bowlers do the opposite. They’re distracted by the possible outcomes of

a shot, causing their concentration to wander, and many times creating jitters and tension

from fear of a bad result (thus making a bad result all the more likely).

On top of that, letting your mind drift to possible outcomes prevents you channelling all

your energy into the shot at hand

The best way to shift from results-orientated to process/now thinking is to develop and

maintain a consistent and easily repeatable pre-shot routine.

This will force your mind to focus on a handful of thoughts, one at a time, all related to the

current shot. The key is to limit the number of thoughts in preparing for each bowl.

Otherwise the brain becomes cluttered and performance suffers.

Circuit Training will take place at 10.30am on January 7th and January 21st, weather

permitting. Please put your name on the list on the board.
