    YOUTH MINISTRY -JFANG PROJECT

As long ago as 1915, the newly formed ChurchOf The Nazarenes Committee on YoungPeoples Societies, the local Youth Ministrybranch of which was known as the NazareneYoung Peoples Society (NYPS, thepredecessor of NYI), desired for the Youth ofthe Church to take some responsibility for thefunding of missions. In 1928, the NYPS set agoal of raising $100,000 for home missions.

While such a lofty goal was not met that year, the society was able to raise $10,000, and indoing so, they began what is now alongstanding tradition of the young people of

the Church of the Nazarene raising money formissions. In the hopes of raising more moneyfor mission work, the society decided to takeone large offering which would be held onEaster Sunday in 1935. The offering was asuccess, and to this day, we take an Easteroffering for mission work in the Church Of TheNazarene.

In 1940, offerings for mission projects began toincrease. In addition to the Easter offering to

support mission work as a whole, the NYPSalso began taking special offerings to benefitspecific mission projects, such as the work ofthe International Red Cross organization. From1944 to 1945, several mission offerings weretaken to support mission work in Alaska, tohelp open the work in Australia and NewZealand, and to benefit relief work in China. Intwo years, over $60,000 was raised for missionwork.

In 1952, two separate mission projects werechosen as recipients of mission offering money. The first was the launch of Bible Colleges inAustralia and South Africa, and the second wasfor a radio outreach project in New York City.Over $56,000 came in for those two projects. From 1956 until 1988, NYPS took annualofferings to benefit the American Bible Society. Also during that time, projects such assponsoring the purchase of a parsonage in West

Germany, creating an extension seminary inEcuador, and raising funds for the seminary inMexico were supported by NYPS missionofferings.

In 1989, Nazarene Youth International (NYI,formerly NYPS) decided to forego supportingthe American Bible Society in favor ofparticipating in the Nazarene-sponsoredThrust to the Cities offering. By 1993,mission funding was becoming problematic forNYI. In order to boost giving, the Global YouthEvangelism Offering was created. The moneygiven in this annual offering supported the

Youth in Mission program. Also around thistime, NYI decided to choose a specific missionoffering project to support each year. Some ofthe projects included supporting a radioevangelism ministry in China, funding thecreation of culture specific Youth Ministryresources, and funding the translation ofexisting resources.

At NYC 99 USA/Canada, the Next

Generation NYI offering project wasintroduced. The goal of this initiative was tofund the development and growth of urbanYouth Ministry projects in Brooklyn and Rio deJaneiro. Around this time, it was recognizedthat giving trends, particularly in the USA,were changing. Donors wanted to give directlyto a specific need rather than contribute to ageneral offering. In response to this change,Jesus for a New Generation was created in June2001 at Global Convention. This program

continues the rich tradition of NYI missionoffering projects yet makes giving morepersonal and project-specific. Now, you canview a list of projects, choose one you wouldlike to support, and raise money that goesdirectly to that project need.

If you would like to learn more about how tosponsor a project contact your regional office.
