It was another great week. Most of the readers know us by now, but for the ones who do not know us yet: Dr Mirjam de Haart is a rehabilitation doctor at the Amsterdam Medical Centre and Dr Huub van der Heide is an orthopaedic surgeon at the Leiden University Medical Centre. This was our fourth time to Bali, helping at High 5. It was another beautiful week with varying emotions. After our arrival in the south of Bali we hired a car and drove to Lovina. It is a strange feeling to be driving in a car on an island on the other side of the world while at the same time this road to the north feels so familiar. It is a great start of our stay. On our arrival in Lovina Marieke was already awaiting us in Hotel Starlight and also the hotel staff welcomed us in a way so that we felt like coming home. We carried in our suitcases, apart from some clothing, a children's walking aid, a new prosthesis for Ketut, measured shoes for Annugrah, 10 sets of semi-orthopaedic children shoes, shoes to wear with a cast with which the children can walk around without ruining the casts and further presents for Marieke's children and some cheese, cookies and traditional Dutch December treats. On Wednesday afternoon we examined the children who would be treated on Thursday and Friday and we again informed the children and their parents about the rehabilitation and the expected results. On Thursday Putu Ari was treated first. She is a girl with a club foot on the right whose father has untreated club feet on both sides.

his made it very special for us, when her father asked us to treat her because he did not want his daughter to live the life he had led. These are moments when we are reallytouched and we are sorry that we do not speak the language sufficiently to express ourselves. The surgery was satisfactory. After this kind of surgery a foot will never be perfect, but in general it will be good enough to carry the weight and the child will be able to walk on the sole of the foot. Putu Ari will be having a cast twice for 6 weeks, after which she will walk with a brace first and then without a brace. Next, Kadek Sukreni had her surgery. Sukreni had severe bow-legs and it could be expected that this would get worse due to the growth and instability of the knee. By sawing the bone below the knee the position of the leg could be corrected and the bones were fixed by pins. For a proper recovery of the bones she has to wear a cast for three months. We know Sukreni as a shy girl who is easily frightened but in the days after the surgery she seemed to loosen up and we even received a smile! The expectation is that the bow is gone and that she will be able to walk. Friday was a very intense day of surgeries. First we treated Komang Yuda on both club feet. Komang is nine years old, which is rather old for a proper club foot correction. Komang's feet are very rigid and it proved difficult to correct his feet so that in the future he would be able to walk on the soles of his feet. He has to have a three months cast and for his right foot it is doubtful if this surgery is sufficient or whether it needs more surgery. Time will show. Kadek Arte Yasa was the last in line. He also had club feet on both sides and he is "only" four years old, which is still relatively old for this treatment. Both his feet were more flexible which made the correction easier. But also this surgery for Arte Yasa was complex and he has to have three months casts on both legs. We expect that he will be able to walk. Saturday was a lovely day. After the examinations in the hospital in the morning we drove to

us that before he needed help to get inside the classroom but now his father can take him to school and Annugrah walks across the schoolyard and into the classroom by himself. Because he has shaky flatfeet after his surgery, Hanssen Footcare in the Netherlands has manufactured a pair of orthopaedic shoes for him. They fit well and enable him to stand more stable and he was able to walk with them without ado. He still h as a long stretch to go and we will monitor him in the coming years to keep him on his feet. After exactly one week we said goodbye. Again our stay had been an experience. By now we are back in the Netherlands for some weeks and we keep in contact with Marieke by email concerning the rehabilitation. Except for the fact that also the cast on Komang Yuda's right leg needed to be replaced all is going well and we hope that the results of these surgeries are just as good as with the previous children. On our way south on Bali we stopped at Yakkum, the foundation that makes the braces for the children. We were welcomed warmly and were given a tour of the foundation and the workplace. Sadly on Thursday we really had to return to our cold home country, but we have made plans already for the next week of surgery...

the village of Ketut Werdi and visited his school. We observed him in his classroom and on the schoolyard and we were allowed to take him back home before school hours were finished. We were welcomed by his relatives and we gave him the spare part of his new prosthesis. On Sunday he came to the foundation together with his sister Kadek Ari, who is an employee of the foundation, and together with Gede from the toolshop we measured the new prosthesis that had been made byOIM Amsterdam. Afterwards we watched him play soccer with his new prosthesis. In the afternoon we went to see the children in the hospital and could release Putu Ari and Arte Yase to take them back to the foundation. Komang Yuda's cast on his left leg had to be changed on Tuesday morning, after which also Komang and Sukreni could be transported to the Kos for their rehabilitation. It was a special closing of our stay when all the children were released from hospital and waved us goodbye. On Monday morning we saw (almost) all the children we had treated before. These children were doing well and it is great to see them grow up while still making progress in their skills. For example, Gipper, who had surgery in March 2010, was eager to be examined first, so that he could skip happily back to school. The last children we examined were Ayu and Annugrah. Both have spasms and after lengthening their tendons they are better in standing but they remain dependent on aids. Ayu received orthoses that had been made for her by Noppe Orthopedie in the Netherlands. After proper readjustment of these orthoses together with firm shoes Ayu experienced enough support to be able to walk short distances. Annugrah had surgery in April 2011, before which he had to walk on his toes and he was not able to stand. After surgery he is now able to stand and walk better, which is a real improvement. His father told

So – education SKB - SO

Short story about my

education and

education at SKB SO My name is tini, I am a teacher from HIGH 5 REHAB FOUNDATION/ SKB SO, I

went to college in University STKIP AGH in Singaraja. I had majored in languages and art education, my education had lasted three years, now I’m on the 5th semester, I took three semesters more for a degree Spd (undergraduate

program) again. I really hope I can finish my course properly and on time is 4 years, since first I did not want to disappoint the trust Marieke to me and also I don’t want the foundation lose out because the foundation helps me with financed my school and I was also given dispensation to leave early so I could attend college. I would like to thank a lot to Marieka and foundations for always encouraging me to be more spirit. I am very happy,

because the knowledge I got from my school I can give to the childrens at SKB SO. The total of the children at SKB SO is 22 children, most of them follow a normal curriculum, and some they just learn to recognize letters, and study how they can account numeric and learning skills that will be useful for them .. They are smart kids, even they have started to learn independently. So that is my story about my education and school SKB SO. THANK YOU.

A popular slogan in aid work is: "don't supply fish but give the people a rod and teach them how to fish". Also in my line of work I try to keep this idea in mind. Education is of great importance, not only for my job in the Netherlands but also here in Bali. From the start of the surgery OR-project, Dr Wayan has been involved and several times he has assisted in the surgeries. Dr Wayan would like to be an orthopaedic surgeon, however, the costs for the education are high and funds for education are different compared to the Netherlands. I have tried in the Netherlands to find funds and it worked! The foundation Orthopedie

Overzee has reserved an amount for his training and this will be provided in terms depending on the progress of his progress. A contract has been drawn stating that half of the entree fees will be paid by the foundation Orthopedie Overzee and the other half by the hospital where we always perform the surgeries. Apart from this he will receive a monthly allowance for sustenance during the training and participation in conferences will be discussed with me. In return Dr Wayan will assist in the surgeries of the SO-OK project and he will help the foundation with further treatment and rehabilitation of the children.

Furthermore it is stated in the contract that he should continue at the hospital for at least five years after finishing his specialism and that during that time he will treat the children of High 5 free of charge. For all involved a good contract! Since a large amount is involved which is purely for the education we have decided that the project will not be run under the wings of the foundation High 5 Rehab but strictly handled by me. Although this is therefore not strictly speaking an activity of High 5 we still wanted to share this with you! Huub van der Heide.

Yayasan Kupu-Kupu visit.

Yayasan Kupu-kupu is a

foundation in Ubud that helps

disabled people by teaching

them skills and to read and

write. They have presented a

nice donation to our

foundation: two boxes full of

materials that serve us very

well! Many thanks to Yayasan

Kupu-kupu.

YAKKUM BALI Many thanks

for the meeting in Denpasar!

Stichting Madelief will help High 5 with the education program. Using this sponsoring we will be able to hire a second teacher and to buy books. So many thanks to foundation Madelief and Mr. Lex Floris.

which has arrived in Indonesia, could be released and placed. Unfortunately that didn't happen since again we were confronted with the annoying Indonesian rules which simply cannot be ignored. But still, we thank Hennie and Gunther for their visit and we hope to see you again soon in Bali, when the container is truly released. Dear Marij, you are on our minds.

And of course we like to thank all those people who come to Bali to present a donation!!

Great Donations!

Noppe Orthopedie

Kees and Karin Noppe of

Noppe Orthopedie in

Noordwijkerhout have visited

the foundation during their

holidays in April 2011 (see

the report in Newsletter 14).

They got involved in the

project. During their stay

here they met Ayu and made

moulds from her legs. Ayu is

now able, using the orthoses

made by Noppe, to walk for

short distances with just little

support. Similar to the year

2010, Noppe has replaced

this year's Xmas pres ents

by a donation to High 5

Rehab, to be used in the So-

OK project. Thanks so much

for the donation and the

great gesture. I hope we will

meet again next year and it

might be a good year for

developing a new exciting

project at High 5!

manufactured two beautiful

pairs of fitted shoes for

Yuni and Annugrah. At the

foundation we made

moulds of their feet from

and with these fitted shoes.

Both pairs fitted perfectly

and they are able to walk

more stably now. Apart

from the shoe donations

we also received an

aan den IJssel. Enthusiastic from what they read in the Newsletters, the board of the Christian-social Women's Movement "De Passage" in Capelle aan den IJssel invited Mirjam de Haart and Huub van der Heide to give a presentation on November 14 2011 on the SO-OK project. Mirjam and Huub were impressed by the attention they received from the audience and the involvement that showed from the questions being asked. At the end of the evening a collection was made and an amount that exceeded the expectations could be handed to High 5. The evening also resulted in further individual donations. All of you are warmly thanked for your contributions.

Fons Frensen of the firm OIM te Amsterdam. a beautiful new prosthesis. Ketut took no time in showing his soccer skills using this new prosthesis. Fons and firm OIM in Amsterdam, thank you kindly for making it possible for Ketut to walk, play and go to school.

Based on some measurements and pictures Fons made in 2010 the first prosthesis for Ketut Werdi, hoping that he would be able to stand with it and walk a few steps. But knowing Ketut he was sure

to exceed all expectations. Ketut not only stands and walks, he even plays soccer daily with his prosthesis. From its intense use the prosthesis was soon fully worn. Using a gypsum mould Fons has now made
