Inside - OutsideThis photographic project looks at fitness and health by depicting the places where individuals exercise. The activities chosen were; swimming, rowing, cycling and running. Peter designed a questionnaire asking people what were their preferences were when taking exercise. Do people prefer to exercise inside in a gym or outside in the landscape ?These photographs show these spaces and environments in an entirely pragmatic and straightforward manner. The first place he decided to photograph was the Gym at Liskeard. The two images represented here show the pool at Liskeard and the ocean at Treyarnon Bay near Padstow. Both images include a figure looking at water, one isan artificial environment the other in the open space of the natural environment.

Ashes to AshesThese images are aimed at the hardcore 19% of the population who smoke in modern day Britain. Using ash remains from cigarettes I have constructed several different images of iconic symbols related to smoking and its effects. During this project I have created various pictures out of ash, including Skulls and Crossbones, Coffins and Human Lungs.

The concept that these images are exploring is based on the idea of someone “Smoking themselves to death”. The message is clear : Smoking Kills.

Abstract MindThis project aims to look into mental health issues, using mirrors to show what it may be like to suffer from mental health problems. By placing mirrors in various everyday locations the intention was to show distortion. Simply by flipping scenes Gareth’s main aim was to show how familiar spaces become imbued with a sense of discomfort.

BEN FUERYLooking SeawardThis project focuses on mental health issues that are often ignored and considered unimportant by society. Ben wanted to capture a sense of loneliness and isolation using spaces that appear to evoke a further sense of negative feeling.

The images in this series capture individuals in temporary moments of isolation and depression by facing away from the camera. The anonymity also represents the real anonymity of sufferers and the isolation they feel. Here, Ben is suggesting that nobody really knows what another being is feeling or thinking. This series hopes to raise important questions around the subject of mental health.

MICHAEL HOLLAND Emotions of OceansFor this project Michael has been looking at the way the ocean has a physical effect on our bodies and minds. For centuries many people have understood that the ocean has phenomenal healing properties.

This photograph shows the winter surfers of Widemouth Bay tackling a heavy winter swell. The physical effort needed to paddle out through the heavy shore break to gain position for an epic wave riding session, means these surfers need to maintain a high level of fitness both mentally and physically.

This image was made using a very high resolution camera. The file was then converted to a negative image and printed on digital file transfer paper. In effect this makes an analogue negative. This then allows Michael to print the final print using traditional darkroom photographic materials.

LUCY PINNELLA Picture of HealthLucy Pinnell has an avid interest in documentary and journalistic photography. For this project however, she decided to explore the contrast between perceived notions of health and reality. To do this, she used photographic software to manipulate and merge portraits with various environmental factors that can impact a person’s well-being, such as industrial pollutants, or natural environments such as the ocean. Through this, she hopes to defy perceived ideas about how we think a healthy human should look and demonstrate that a healthy appearance does not necessarily indicate a healthy body.

Peter moved to Cornwall 25 years ago and worked as an engineer and mechanic until 6 years ago when he was diag-nosed with cancer. He has now been give the all clear, but the whole experience changed the way he looked at the world and the way he lived his life. So, after much thought he decided to pursue a dream and develop his passion for photography. He began to take his art much more seriously and worked harder to produce images that shows the joy he finds in the world and highlight the beauty he sees in land-scapes and nature.

Sam Parsons

I moved to Cornwall in September 2013 to study for a Foundation Degree in action photography. Having a passion for photographing the natural world and its inhabitants was the influence for my involvement on the course. Studying photography has not only improved my visual skills but changed the way I look and think. My Personal interests involve water sports, wildlife, cars and exploring the natural world.

Gareth DenneyGareth moved to Cornwall in September 2013. He began to explore photography at Secondary school, which encouraged him to develop his skills further at West Suffolk College in East Anglia. Throughout his training his work has branched out, resulting in a portfolio containing many different concepts. Gareth hopes to continue with photography upon completing this FDA course.

Ben spent his teenage years growing up in a confused amalgamation of urban and rural surroundings in a deprived part of West Cornwall. He became amazed at the stark contrast between dereliction and nature. In the recent past he has found a passion for story telling through the medium of documentary photography. In 2014 Ben travelled to Romania and spent time in a Romani gypsy village where he began to create a new series of works, focusing predominantly on their cultural differences with western culture. Currently, Ben is also working on a joint project with Lucy Pinnell using large format to explore abandoned and derelict residential and commercial properties throughout Cornwall with the intention to expand in to mainland Europe over several years.

Michaels lifelong fascination with the ocean has played an important part in keeping his photography in balance. An avid surfer and photographer Michael has committed himself to an important role of documenting the surfer’s of North Cornwall, both from the land and water.

“The ocean is where I feel at peace and free,” says Michael, “it is where I feel most connected to the natural beauty of this planet. Photographing the waves and the Ocean’s moods make it a very unique challenge. Whether swimming and shooting in the surf, or climbing a cliff to get an angle… it is all about bringing the viewer into another world.”

www.lucypphotography.comLucy is a 20 year old photographer from Cornwall currently studying a FdA Foundation Degree in Action Photography. She hopes one day to become a photojournalist, but she also has an avid interest in travel, band, urban exploration and action sport photography. Her real passion lies in photojournalism: capturing the emotion and devastation of world events through photography is her major career ambition. She admires greatly the work of photographers such as Jodi Bieber, Steve McCurry and Robert Frank.

She is currently working on a documentary project about immigrant workers in Cornwall and hopes to expand this to Eastern Europe.

This newspaper catalogue showcases second year FdA Action Photography students at Truro College. All this work was made as part of their professional practice module. The module included a project where the students responded to some of the core themes at the European Centre for Environment & Human Health, Truro.

The FdA Action Photography course is designed to develop and understand the fundamentals of how to practice as a photographer in the changing world of visual and photographic communication. Students are helped to develop skills in the various fields of photography covering topics such as Natural History, Sports and Social Documentary. Strong emphasis is placed upon photographic practice with all students carrying out creative work to a professional standard. Contextual understanding is also

key as are the various projects undertaken in conjunction with organisations such as Surfers Against Sewage and the European Centre for Human Health. Many of our students have gone on to work independently in various fields from motor sport F1, surfing and editorial as well as NGO charity based work.

Students work on projects and simulated briefs whilst being supported by high calibre staff, professional photographers and other visiting lecturers.
