To help prevent nutritional concerns among Lourdesians, Lourdes School of Quezon City’s (LSQC) Health Services Area launched the Nutrition Month last July 6 in the High School (HS) Department with the theme, “Timbang Iwasto sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo.“ Health Services Head and Area Coordinator Mr. Romeo Verayo Jr, alongside Mr. Jun Avendano, discussed tips on how to maintain the junior high students’ bodies healthy, stressing on the problems of obesity. They shared that becoming overweight can make the students prone to non-communicable diseases or illnesses that cannot be transmitted, are of long duration and of slow progress. These include diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Serving as preventive measures and verifying whether the body is fit, checking the students’ waist and hip circumference and getting their Body Mass Index (BMI) were suggested by the school physicians. They are means of measuring one’s weight and height to determine their health status. Also, the 10 Kumainments tarpaulin posted along the school’s wall was further detailed and given meaning. The said guidelines given are a compilation of

lifestyles to follow, pertaining mainly to the students’ diet, in order to stay in good shape.

The “commandments,” translated in English, are as follows:

1) Eat different kinds of viands.2) On the first 6 months of babies, do breastfeeding only; once they reach their 6th month, give them

other appropriate foods.3) Eat vegetables and fruits every

day.4) Consume fish, meat and other

foods with protein.5) Drink milk; eat foods that are

rich in calcium.6) Make sure that our food and

water are clean and safe.7) Use iodized salt.

8) Lessen your intake on salty, oily and sweet foods.

9) Maintain the proper weight.10) Become active. Stay away from drinking wine and do not

smoke.

Both of Mr. Verayo Jr. and Mr. Avendano’s discussions shortly preceded the Blessing of the Jose Maria de Manila Covered Courtyard on the same day.

The performance portrayed a variety of characters through putting a modern twist upon the two classic novels to illustrate social issues experienced by the Philippines at present, such as corruption and illegal logging. The two-hour play was a division of two sets to show transition from Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere to El Filibusterismo that highlighted Juan Crisostomo Ibarra. Played by Mr. Lucho Ayala,”Ibarra Marasigan” was a mayor-turned-rebel after being victimed by dirty politics. aaaaAlso, Ms. Kris Bernal, playing the role of Clarissa, known as Maria Clara from the original novels, portrayed a character who is a woman who seeks the trust of her father who rejected her decisions and instead decided for her, symbolizing Filipinas who fights for their right and be treated equally.

After the play viewing, Lourdesians return to the high school department satisfied, including the administrators and the staffs of the school. The original stage of PETA Theater was located at Eymard Drive, New Manila, Quezon City. However, to accommodate all Lourdesians and to give help to a foundation, Springs Production Studios was rented by PETA for the meantime.

LSQC, to perform random drug testing among students and employees.

By: Joshua Benedict V. Alipio, Kristine Anne U. Malonzo, John Alexander Sy

For the first time in history, random drug testing would now be conducted among high school students and employees of Lourdes School Quezon City. Due to the increasing number of cases involving drugs among the youth, the school preferred to ensure a healthy and drug-free community within the campus. Thus, LSQC would now be one of the schools that is to execute a random drug testing.

The principal of the High School Department, Mrs Arlyn Hope B. Blanco, have said that this would be a preventive action of the school with regards the usage of prohibited drugs by the students. Based from DepED Order No. 7, S 2009, this action shall be implemented as a collaborative undertaking of the government, schools, the students, and their parents. According to the school nurse of the High School Department, Mr.

Junie Verayo, this said affair would be in partnership of the Department of Health (DOH). The Local Government Units (LGUs) would also provide assistance to the school. Guidance counselors also cited that through the random drug testing, they would be able to conduct due counseling to students that are partaking of illegal drugs. As of now, the preparation of LSQC regarding this matter is still ongoing.

A Beginning MilestoneBy: Matthew Pacinos

The Story Behind the Cleaners and Protectors

By: Patrick Busico

“Begin with the end in mind,” to start with a clear understanding of your destination. The motivating words that led me and my fellow batchmates to finish the game that we started, but we’re just at the first level. As we go to another level it’s up to you, the incoming freshmen, to enjoy the match. After crossing the bridge, from Elementary to a whole new world, how can you, incoming Grade 7 students, survive the reality? High School is where genuineness is everywhere and joy never fades. High School is only once, it’s in your hands to choose your fate.

Lourdes School QCHigh School

Education at its finest. Lourdes School values their students as an individual and they mold the student’s future through giving each the quality education that gears and ensures them for a brighter tomorrow. With Becoming Like Christ as the mission-vision, they form the students or so-called Lourdesians, to be a better person imbued with the characteristics of their patron saints, the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Francis of Assisi. The school provides interaction to the real world, where everyone can learn and get new insight and grow as a member of the society.

To The Next Level One step higher can make a large difference, from grade school to high school, it’s completely different. But what makes it similar is that you still learn but this time, an unforgettable learning experience is bound to happen to you, as a seventh grader. High School can construct or destruct you, with all the presence of mutual feelings to your peers or giving up towards your studies, it’s a matter of balance and choosing to be optimistic at the same time. Every day being a high school student, you are transformed to be more mature and to be the best person you can

be.

Overcome and Influence “Don’t just survive, leave your own mark as well.” -Joshua Alipio, Grade 10 To survive a new world is completely different from leaving a legacy, a mark. To survive, you find how to overcome something, but to leave a mark you leave an effect which will serve as an inspiration to other people. High School is the place where you can be extraordinary, where you can show everyone that you’re different, you can show that you are what you are. Just be yourself, it’s useless to blend in with the crowd if you don’t improve your character

as a whole. High School also challenges you to set your priorities. One of my peers said take your time but be punctual, and this is High School. You are called out there, the temptation to have fun is visible but never forget to balance everything. It is indeed better to know first and plan what you want to do, there are many open opportunities that await you, just prioritize and be proactive. Lastly, enjoy while it lasts, you only live once. High School gives you many firsts, many downfalls, and even heartbreaks but it always let you experience victory. Through small happenings in your life, see its worth, see how much you gained as an individual in each thing you have explored. The world where reality exists, balance is a must and fun moments in your life is about to happen, that’s High School.

From An Experienced Freshman

It’s ironic that I gave more advice than other students at the higher level but I can say they can all relate to what I’ve said. It’s because the seventh grade will really push you to the limits and let you experience new adventures. You will really feel hopeless and scared what might happen the next day, but High School will also give you the inspiration

aaaaaTitans, as defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, are the people who are extremely large and powerful. However, in the Lourdes School community, not only are the administrators, coordinators, students, and teachers are the ones who are considered as the True-Blooded Lourdesians. With LSQC’s commitment in preserving the natural resource of our environment and the school’s mission to protect every Lourdesian, there are people behind all of these. The people who are dedicated to their work and striving to build a better place for the school, they deserve all the honors and respect. To serve and protect, the motto of our maintenance and security staff. In their line of job, it requires them to almost work all day and they still have duties to fulfill upon coming home from work. They cook, prepare things for the following day and/or help their wives or family from work. When they’re stress they find things that would make them happy and energized. Besides that, if given a chance

to have a vacation, they want to go to places they’ve never been or they want to experience it with their whole family. Arnold Lanuzo, is one of the security guards who served the school for a long time and is still working for it until now. In times of stress, he watches some clips of his favorite action movies, and before going to work, he exercises too, to prepare him for his work in the school. He wish to see his grandchildren in Pateros but he also want to explore Hong Kong in the future together with his family.Kier Estallo was a security personnel who was hired two years ago. After a long day of work, he tries to stay updated with the news and besides that, he watches television shows too. He dreams to have a tour in Japan with his girlfriend, but their hobby for now is to bond through watching some movies. Lydio Habana is a member of the maintenance staff, at first he worked at the grade school department but then moved to the high school building. Habana watches television too

to entertain himself after work and if given a chance to have a vacation, he wants to spend time with his family at Baguio City and experience the cold breeze and have some fun.Greg Inosanta also works as a maintenance personnel. Inosanta is very close to the students that makes him well-known to them. After work, a television will do to relax them. Kuya Greg prefers to go at the Queen City of the South, Cebu and spend time there to relax and enjoy what Cebu can offer. aaaaaThe security guards and maintenance staff show us that they have a good different side. We should try hard to know them well. They are a part of the heart of LSQC. They are important no matter what. Every attention counts to them. They are people who we must give our respect to. They chose to work for the school than to be with their family. They are not just maintenance members or guards. They are also the heroes of the school. That is the story behind the cleaners and the protectors.

to study with love. Each day is fulfilling and special and absolutely the time of your lives. With the books and notebooks that served as our manual, the pen and paper as our armors, we escaped all the obstacle and defeated the boss of the 1st level, disguised as the problems and challenges of the freshmen year. This is just the

beginning, more stages in our life is about to come and it’s your time to start the game now.

Student struggles, how hard can it be?By: Lyle Johanne Perez

Students are always expected to perform well at school despite having difficulties or challenges along the way, but how will the social media respond about a common struggle? A tweet went viral after a student posted an advice to the incoming juniors to prepare for a drastic road towards the Grade 9 level. However, instead of gratitude and appreciation, the post earned hundreds of comparison among college students who tells ‘how cute’ their (juniors) suffering may be. According to a study conducted by Penn State University, the cases of anxiety among students have already surpassed depression as the leading mental health issue. In a survey by the National College Health Assessment, more than 14.3 percent, or one out of six students need to be treated regularly because of this. It is true that those who are studying for higher education experiences a lot challenges and pressure, but we also need to give considerations into some aspects such as the implementation of the new curriculum.

Sipol HarrasmentNi: John Carl Ramos

In the new K-12 Program, some units that were supposed to be included in college were moved to Basic Education. The said units would be removed from the College General Education curriculum, making the students understand a more complex thought at a younger age compared to those who didn’t undergo the newly executed course. The pressure increases while the students take a step towards dreams and aspirations, but with anxiety, can students perform well at class if the same reason why they’re anxious is also their academic a c c o m p l i s h m e n t s ? According to the mental health clinicians at Boston University, it is no surprise that students flunk exams or they drop a course for the past 12 months because of anxiety. Also, because of the pressure that students feel at school some exerts too much effort and it results to sleep deprivation among students. Scientist had proven that there are many bad effects of losing sleep, especially for students and workers.

According to researches, when someone is sleepless, this makes a person forgetful and depressed. In the 2009, American and French researchers found that brain events called “sharp wave ripples” are responsible for consolidating memory. These are responsible for holding the long-term memories and these are acquired during the deepest sleeps. A sleeping disorder called Insomnia is a syndrome is strongly linked to depression. In a study in 2007, 10,000 people who are insomniac are five times likely to develop depression compared to those who doesn’t experience such. If students think that they’d be more productive in school if they pull all-nighters, they are mistaken. Instead of improving their performance, they only worsen it because of sleeping late at night. Be it a high school or a college student, there’s no exemption when it comes in facing the harsh reality of life. Challenges come and go but as we get experienced through time, we will learn the value of training ourselves in this world of uncertainty.

Umali. “You can’t stop anyone from whistling.”

Reflections from a Lourdesian to a Lourdesian

By John Carl Ramos

Need to book a last minute reservation for a two-week tour in Thailand or maybe search through Grabtaxi to find one that could bring you to the nearest mall or somewhere else? All you need is a simple touch of a button, a few minutes and a stable wireless connection and you’re done! It’s that easy with our rapidly evolving technology. We’ve grown so accustomed to it that anything we want is just within one’s full reach. From food to clothes, to getting that love of our lives and fulfilling goals, we sometimes have been wired to believe that everything has become instant. Unfortunately, we get lost in the process; in the end, we fail and give up. However, Simplicio P. Umali Jr., President and General Manager (GM) of Gardenia Bakeries (Philippines) Inc., is one of many people who are counterexamples to our growing belief. He did not earn his string of successes with just a blink of an eye. Once, he wanted to own a posh car then for himself similar to the company’s. Well, he got what he wanted though the minuscule version only. In spite of this, the Lourdesian alumnus would place the miniature copycat on his desk and made it his motivation to work harder. It wasn’t a surprise though that he got what he wanted soon enough. It wasn’t the mini “me” model but the real model of that dream car he used to aspire for. As gleaned from Mr. Umali’s anecdote, we are reminded of those things we couldn’t just earn in an instant. However, if we strive and prove ourselves worthy, then someday, we can finally claim these as ours. Earning success and achieving long term goals don’t just come knocking at our doors overnight; they require time, patience and perseverance. Further, we have to identify the force

that can drive us to continue treading the path that will lead us to the realization of our dreams. Take the case of the bread master. If not for the miniature model that Mr. Umali had initially contented with, he would have stopped chasing for the real thing. Mr. Umali also urged us to always aim higher and arrest our fears and weaknesses. Reminiscing his high school days in

LSQC, he has been tagged the typical shy guy until he joined the theatre club. This he did two overcome his timidity and lack of confidence. In college, he recalls aspiring to become a marketing manager while his classmates’ aimed to become GMs or presidents of corporations. Years after he realized this, he then thought of what was next for him. Going extra mile and envisioning ourselves pushing further will help us get closer sooner than expected. Never stop learning and equipping yourself with the knowledge and skills. Don’t just settle in your comfort zone and don’t underestimate yourself. As teenagers, we are at times forced to face the world both as a child and a young adult. We get constantly criticized of our actions and this somewhat dampen our spirit and lower our morale which eventually leads us to give up and fail. We all have ups and downs, pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, but one thing is common: our willpower. If we don’t think and believe we can attain our goals, then how can we translate these into action? If we don’t try to go out of the box, then how can we ensure growth? Be willing to learn new things and change for the better because the ignorance of gaining new insights will lead you nowhere. If we just settle for complacency, we would be stubborn and we wouldn’t improve. Keep in mind that if you really want to attain something, determination, patience and unwavering faith in God and the goodness of mankind are the keys to winning it all. To Mr. Umali, these were all that his miniature car has always symbolized. The challenge is set for our future Christian leaders and gospel brothers. Mr. Simplicio Umali Jr. is the President and General Manager

of Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc., the country’s largest manufacturer of loaf bread. He served also as the President and

CEO of major paint company Dutch Boy Philippines Inc. and the Country Manager of Hoechst Pharmaceuticals.

A true blue Lourdesian, Mr. Umali traces his humble beginnings at Lourdes School Quezon City

where he spent and finished grade school and high school from ‘59-‘70.
