Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety.

We often associate distracted driving with the physical and visual actions of taking our hands off the wheel and eyes off the road. Hands-free technology has helped us mitigate the hazards associated with these physical distractions, but the mental distraction that comes with multitasking remains a very real and risky behavior. Driving and talking on the phone are two thinking tasks that involve many parts of the brain. Instead of processing both simultaneously, the brain has to rapidly switch between the two activities, making it virtually impossible to carry out the primary task of driving safely.

The ringing of the phone or alert of a text message creates an irresistible urge for us to read and respond to the message. Here are some suggestions to avoid this temptation while driving:

• Out of Sight, out of Mind! Put your phone in the trunk, backseat, or glove box to eliminate the temptation all together.

• Plan Ahead. Pre-set navigation systems and music playlists before you pull out of the driveway. If you are on a long road trip, schedule stops to check voice mail and respond to e-mails and texts.

• Get Creative with Technology in Hand. Set special ring tones for important calls, alerting you to pull off to a safe place to take them. Install an app that disables your phone while your vehicle is in motion. Consider changing your voice mail greeting to tell people that you may be driving and you’ll call them back when you can safely do so.

• Hold Each Other Accountable for Safe Driving. Tell co-workers, family, and friends not to call or text you when you’re driving. Start conference calls by asking if anyone is driving, and have them call back when they are in a safe location. Have passengers answer incoming calls and respond appropriately.

FORT RILEY REPLACEMENT HOSPITAL

E M P L O Y E E S P O T L I G H T

My name is Greg Gevers. I’ve been employed by Faith Technologies for over 8 years, and I’m currently working as a Preconstruction Manager out of the Appleton office. I’m excited to be transitioning into a new role as a Group Manager under Dan Salm within the Industrial Group. I have a wonderful family, my wife (Sheri), 3 kids (Michaela, Mason and Merrick), and a dog (Maya). I enjoy running around town for the kids’ sporting events and other extracurricular activities, as well as coaching them.

Faith Technologies worked with Berg Electric on this LEED Silver certified hospital replacement project. The new 565,000 square foot facility replaced the 50-year-old Irwin Army Community Hospital, and includes a state-of-the-art in-patient hospital, out-patient clinic, and supporting facilities. In addition to Faith’s BIM capabilities, our electrical and low voltage efforts – lighting, fire alarm, and electrical – positioned us well to best serve the client.

POST-CRESCENT | FEBRUARY 17, 2015

ASK MIKE

EC&M | MARCH 19, 2015

“Faith Technologies Experiences Consistent Growth” Stephanie Guin, Executive Vice President of Human Capital shares details of the company’s 2015 recruitment and overall growth plan.

“Point, Click, Purchase” Executive Vice President Jim Totzke addresses the rapidly changing world of commerce and the trends seen in the electrical industry.

Q. Can you explain the new tool rental rates? Should there be any concern with projects that were bid a while ago that did not take into consideration this new policy change? Is there going to be a line item on a job cost the foreman will be able to see in order to track the tool expense?

A. We recently stopped charging time to jobs for time the shop spends to fix tools; this is now lumped into the rental rate, eliminating labor charges being applied to the job. This change looks different on the job cost report, but does not charge more to your jobs. It will not impact opportunities for gain share.

Q. What about the purchasing policies? How are jobs being bid to allow enough money to be budgeted? Will this information be made available to the foreman to further help him manage the job efficiently? Should there be any concern for jobs bid a while ago?

A. We developed a new way of charging purchasing time to accurately reflect the cost of purchasing to jobs; in the past, only a fraction of this cost was applied to the jobs so this is a way to align costs to revenue streams. This process means field leadership can focus on what they need, when they need it by, and where they need it delivered to. Purchasing will take on the responsibility of ensuring what field leaders need is delivered to meet 30/30.
