or call us at the Vibe and we can turn you into a celebrity overnight.

What do you do? I’m the local barber in Cowes. Have you always been a barber? Yes , although I did spend some time managing a nightclub on Hayman Island and I was also in the antique business for a while. But mainly hairdressing. Its meant I’ve been able to cut hair around the world. I’ve worked in London and Spain and spent two years in France. I was also the hairdresser for a film shot in France. So no I’ve not always been the Cowes Barber. Do you have any interesting or embarrassing stories that you can tell us? Well while I was in London I was seriously offered a million dollars by a casino manager if I could get Kerry Packer to come into his Casino. Did you get the money? No it all became a bit too hard. After travelling and living in different parts of the world what do you like about the Island? Well it has a combination of being cosmopolitan but still has its small town friendliness. Do you miss the bigger cities? No, Happy to go play in them but not to live in them.

Laughter really is the best medicine! What scientists describe as a “psycho-physiological response to humour” is credited with a raft of jolly good health benefits. A good, hearty laugh can effectively: - Tone your abs! - Increase the release of endorphins - Increase social connection and relationship building - Relieve physical tension and stress - Boost your immune system - Temporarily relieve pain - Improve cardiac health and lower blood pressure - And promote an overall sense of well-being.

Additionally the seemingly simple act of laughing can provide a great body workout. No joke – a good belly laugh burns calories. When you laugh, your diaphragm, abdominal, respiratory and facial muscles all get a smashing workout.

So why not add a little or a lot of laughter to your day! Better yet add laughter to your ab routine, group fitness class, personal training session and make getting fit and toned a highly enjoyable and effective experience.

With nothing to loose and so much to gain, start with a smile and get laughing for your happiness and health today!

FREAKY FACT The word "cliché" comes from the days of moveable type, where each letter had to be set by hand into a framework before printing. The clamp that keeps letters together to form these oft-used sentences or phrases is called a cliché.

Danielle Aitken

Counselling & Hypnotherapy

We all face challenges in life. Sometimes we need to reach out and ask for help and guidance to assist us in making changes in our lives so that we can move into a more positive and fulfilling lifestyle.

Danielle Aitken is passionate about the potential of the human mind, and each individual’s ability to transform their outcomes simply by changing their thought processes. Having worked in the health industry for 30 years, Danielle has the knowledge, experience and training to help her clients set achievable goals to help them overcome life’s hurdles and discover and grow their innate strengths to create a pathway to wellness.

While being a registered nurse and midwife, Danielle is also the IVF Care Patient Co-ordinator in a leading Melbourne clinic. But it’s her training as a hypnotherapist and counsellor that drives her private clinic in Kilcunda. By utilising a combination of counselling techniques, neuro-linguistic programing, timeline regression and hypnotherapy techniques, Danielle is able to achieve optimal results for her clients in areas such as effective management of phobias, anxiety, compulsive behaviours, relationship and lifestyle issues, chronic pain and drug and alcohol addictions.

Danielle is highly trained in the use of hypnotherapy and believes it is the most natural form of therapy available. Hypnotherapy is a process that produces great relaxation, leading to a heightened susceptibility to suggestion. During hypnotherapy, positive results are gained when the active conscious mind is bypassed, allowing access to the deeper sub-conscious mind while allowing you to be in complete control at all times.

Danielle has a special interest in ‘Hypnobirthing’ and is the developer of the H.A.N.D. (Hypnosis And Normal Delivery) technique of natural childbirth: a therapy whereby hypnosis is used before, during and after labour to produce a positive birthing experience. These techniques provide the potential for a woman to access her body’s own powerful ability to achieve natural analgesia and in some cases anaesthesia, effectively reducing the need for pain killers in labour. Ideally,

childbirth should be an uncomplicated and natural process, and by utilising hypnosis, Danielle believes the “mother to be” can achieve a strong sense of autonomy and control over her labour.

Most importantly, Danielle understands the importance of listening to her clients about the issues they are trying to deal with and knows that it’s the practitioner’s responsibility to earn the client’s trust. It’s only once trust is established that the practitioner can assist in empowering you to rediscover your highest potential to deal with these matters.

Ultimately, it is empathy, compassion and a commitment to confidentiality that provides Danielle with the underlying strength and motivation to help her clients achieve the changes that they want to make in their lives.

Action Park

Based in New Jersey, the original park operated from 1978 until 1996 and had the reputation of being the most dangerous thrill ride park ever opened. During its life span at least 6 people died while enjoying what the park had to offer. Here are just a couple of rides that were on offer:

The Alpine slide

Sitting in a wheeled toboggan the rider was sent hurtling down a shallow chute with a “control” stick with two main positions one that slowed you down to almost a dead stop or the other that was horrifyingly fast. The ride was made of concrete and fiberglass so any small mishap meant that the rider limped away with very severe abrasions. This ride only killed 1 person but it did result in 14 limb fractures and 26 head injuries. It also had the added bonus of other riders trying to spit on you as they took the chairlift to the start of the ride.

The Cannonball Loop

This was an enclosed water slide with a complete vertical loop at its end. It was reported that a rider once became stuck at the top of the loop and a hatch had to be built into its side to assist with future extractions. The angle of the loop was so extreme that it was closed after only a short while due to the number of bloody noses and back injuries.

Action Park had lots more dangerous rides, including a

kayak ride that electrocuted one of its riders. It was only after the United States really moved into the litigation phase that the park had to remove the rides and evolve into its new form which has “all of the thrills with none of the spills”.

World of the Weird

Thrill Parks of Death

I have never been very good at thrill rides. The most

adventurous ride I have attempted was the Scooby Doo Spooky Coaster many years ago at the insistence of the younger members of the family. I walked away from that experience nauseous and a little bit dazed. My youngest lay down for a while. But it goes further back than that as I still have memories of reluctantly riding the Luna Park Ghost Train when I was very young. I spent the entire ride crouched trying to avoid any malevolent spirits that would reach out and possess my body. The end effect was that every time the little train stopped or turned suddenly I would crack my head on the front of the cabin which then convinced my parents that I had indeed been attacked by a poltergeist. Of course these rides are tame compared to what has been offered to the unsuspecting public over the years. The first is ...

The Human Trebuchet

Built at the Middlemoor Water Park in the UK in the late 1990’s, the Trebuchet Ride allowed the victim to become the passenger riding a French 12th Century Siege Weapon. For the pleasure of becoming human ammunition the rider had to fork over nearly $80, was placed into a sling and then swung over the top of the machine and into a net 75 feet away. The Trebuchet while very popular as a siege weapon was never very accurate, as was demonstrated when 19 year old Dino Yankov an Oxford student was launched then subsequently completely missed the net and died.

So while there are a number of killer rides about, the Park that had the largest number of maiming rides was:

The Lazy

Gardener

My other half tends to find solace in a screen. Via his phone, he loves to re-search new information about an eclectic range of sub-jects and sourcing it gives him a great deal of satisfac-tion.

Given that such activity tends towards dimmed lighting, his involvement with the great outdoors often takes a back seat. However, he’s always keen for others to share his enthusiasm so I try and indulge him whenev-er possible by requesting additional information about whatever task is at hand.

So while he reaches for a Vitamin D tablet, or “sunshine in a bottle”, as my daughter so aptly coins it, I’m forever trying to encourage him to try the real thing once in a while. Maybe my years of nagging are finally starting to pay off. The construction of the amazing grav-el garden path re-counted in the last Vibe is possibly just the taste of things to come….

Last Sunday, I found him outside with another pile of broken wood.

This time, he had a bird house in mind. Neither of us are bird watching enthusiasts, but we do admire the gor-geous little yellow wrens that dart about the front gar-den supping, in particular, the nectar of the Chinese Lan-terns.

So after a brief google consultation, he set to work both parts of his brain, artistic and functional. The result as you can see is a beautiful bird house, arched and ga-bled, a befitting mansion for any feathered creature lucky enough to claim it as home.

Periodically throughout the day I would glance out-side and see him truly focused on his project, in a state of ‘flow’. Achieving ‘flow’ is a wonderful thing; without even trying or realizing, your total absorption in the ac-tivity allows your emotions to become channeled in a positive and energized way which makes you feel quite joyful.

I felt kind of jealous most of the day. I was inside con-sumed by inside chores that had become unruly. I would

have much preferred to be outside in the fresh air. Later that day I was home by myself with about an hour

of fading daylight left. I had some seedlings which I’d bought a couple of days before which needed planting out: silver beet, broccoli, lettuce and beetroot. It was getting pretty cold and my head was still enslaved by ‘inside mode’. Not a great mental place to be. It was an effort, but I put a windbreaker on and went outside into the garden. And it wasn’t a chore. Immediately, the day’s events disap-peared as I became intently focused on tilling the soil, lush and rich from lots of composting. And as the light contin-ued to fade, my eyesight kept readjusting. I felt like a noc-turnal animal. Planted out in reasonably neat rows, the seedlings looked quite cosy. It’s always incredible to me the therapeutic benefits of becoming transfixed by mindful action.

Minestrone Soup We’ve had a bit of cold snap! That means it’s time to

make soup. As far as I’m concerned, minestrone ticks all the boxes. It’s tasty, hearty, easy to make and served with some warm ciabatta or garlic bread can easily be served as a meal. You can use whatever stock you like – I tend to go for beef as it has a strong flavour which supports the tomato base and all those vegetables. I’m sure you’ve got your own favourite recipe, but here’s mine.

Here’s What You’ll Need 1 1/2 litre of stock 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, chopped 1 stick celery, sliced 2 x carrots, sliced 3 large silver beet leaves, shredded 6 brusell sprouts, shredded ½ cup pumpkin, cubed 1 cup green beans, sliced 1 zuchinni, sliced ½ cup Italian soup mix (dry beans) soaked in cold water overnight 1 tin tomatoes 3 tbs tomato paste 3 bay leaves ½ cup small pasta Olive oil Flat leaf parsley Parmesan cheese Salt & pepper

Saute the onion and garlic in olive oil.

Add all the chopped vegetables, stock,

tomatoes, tomato paste and bay leaves and season to taste.

When it’s simmering add the dry beans - even

though they’ve been soaked they’ll still need a while to soften adequately.

Leave it to simmer for a couple of hours. About 20

minutes before you’re ready to serve, add the pasta and stir quite frequently so it doesn’t clump or stick.

When the pasta is soft, serve minestrone with fresh

parmesan, black pepper and parsley.

Video Game Stuff Brought To You By

The Game Over Man Skate 3

Now this game is old….. very old it was released in 2010 by Electronic Arts. A game that came out in 2010 is like calculating dog years which would make it more than 100 years old. The strange thing is that it is still for sale in stores and there was just recently a re-re-release leading to a sale surge where most of these new copies were snapped up by people that knew of its hallowed reputation.

The game looks really beautiful on both the Xbox360 and the Playstation 3. The city is convincing while still being a great place to skate. The trick is trying to make the world look real while not creating areas where the player just continually clips objects and flies off their board. My oldest son has said the city reminds him very much of the GTA open world but with obviously less violence.

The game starts with most of the areas open to the player with a few skate parks that can be unlocked. The player builds their reputation during the game that allows their skateboard business to sell more skateboards. This allows the unlocking of branded equipment, clothing and merchandise. This is all done through the completing of missions until the player has sold over a million skateboards and then opens a mega skate stadium.

A nice touch is the laconic coach Jason Lee who delivers a very dry and entertaining series of instructions when teaching the player the basics of the game.

A really gross but cool section is the Hall of Meat that like Burnout rewards the player if they successfully

complete a series of synchronised crashes. The player has to rack up enough body damage points. To emphasise the success or failure an X-ray view is provided but unlike Tony Hawk it is not bloody.

Interestingly both the Tony Hawk games and the Skate games slowed at about the same time as they saturated the market and found that they couldn’t get the current players to get too excited about another game. So now that four years have passed and a new generation of skaters want to play, it may be time for the developers to hop back into the coding chair.

The Case of the Crooked

Bill

By Leon Herbert

A fact well known to regular readers of this series in The Vibe, but for the benefit of the growing number of new

readers is, to quote the mastermind Sherlock Holmes, that “the cardinal rule of criminal investigation was carved in stone more than a century ago. It is a capital mistake to theorise before you have all the evidence... it biases the

judgement. ” Our super sleuth Leroy would opine further in this modern age that in order to deduce essential facts from physical circumstances, separate liars from truth-tellers, infer who has what role in a gang or crime, it is

often necessary to reason with elementary maths or time sequences and the probabilities. So armed with this

knowledge sharpen your thinking skills and get ready to help Leroy unravel this next mystery!

Once a week, Leroy had lunch at the Cowes Beach

Cafe, a delicatessen not far from his home on Phillip Island. On this afternoon, an unusually sunny Wednesday in June, he walked up to the counter and ordered his usual cappuccino and BLT with sour-dough. As he paid, he couldn’t help noticing that Sharon, the lovely cashier and proprietor, seemed distracted.

‘Some-thing’s afoot,’ he muttered, and wasn’t at all surprised two minutes later when Inspector Flint strolled through the door. Leroy watched as the police inspector spoke privately with Sharon, their heads bent together over the cash register. Eventually Inspector Flint turned, saw his old friend and rolled his eyes, a typical greeting that Leroy never took offence at.

‘I shouldn’t be annoyed to find you at another crime scene.’ Inspector Flint sat down at Leroy’s table. ‘So? You want to make yourself useful?’

The rangy grey haired detective saw the twenty-dollar bill in Inspector Flint’s hand. ‘A counterfeiting case?’

‘Wrong,’ Flint said with obvious pleasure. ‘Stolen money. I suppose it was stolen.’

‘You suppose?’ ‘It happened Thursday.’ Inspector Flint leaned across

and whispered: ‘An armoured truck was making pick-ups at some branch banks. As they were loading the bags, one of the guards accidentally left a bag of bills on the rear bumper. They drove off and didn’t notice a thing until the next stop. They counted the bags in the truck and figured out what must have happened. Somewhere on Thompson Avenue, the bag must have fallen onto the road. They went back to look for it…’

‘But it was gone,’ Leroy interrupted. ‘Do you believe the guards’ story?’

‘I do,’ said Inspector Flint. ‘These guys could lose their jobs and their pensions, which are worth more than a bag of money. I’m betting some average guy found it on the road and his greed overcame his honest civic responsibility.’ Leroy responded with a wry smile and remarking that he read once that the best measure of a man's honesty wasn't his income return - rather the zero adjust on his bathroom scale.

Flint was not amused and went on: ‘Luckily, the bills were numbered sequentially. We got a list out to local merchants. Sharon here matched the number on this twenty and phoned it in. The person who passed the bill had to be one of her last three customers - not including you, of course.’

Leroy glanced at the three lone diners, each at a separate table. ‘Excuse me,’ he told Inspector Flint, then crossed to the nearest diner and, in his friendliest manner, engaged this stunningly attractive woman in conversation.

‘I was just transferred to this area,’ the young woman confided smiling expansively while crossing her legs very demurely, glad to have someone to talk to. ‘I’m hunting for a house, but everything is so expensive.’

‘There are some nice houses on Seagrove Estate,’ Leroy said.

‘I checked that neighbourhood last week. I didn’t notice any “For Sale” signs.’

Leroy gave the woman the name of an ace real estate agent in Thompson Avenue, then moved on to the next table. A sullen muscular young man in a sweat-stained tracksuit was finishing a tuna sandwich.

‘I got a prize fight next week,’ he bragged, ‘and I’m on a strict routine, every day without fail. One day the gym; next day sparring; the next road work, like today; then back to the gym.’

‘Do you ever jog along Thompson Avenue?’ The boxer thought for a moment. ‘Yeah, I was running

there last Wednesday. That was my birthday. A nice road with lovely trees, a little too much traffic and shops.’

The last diner was dressed in cycling gear, with a helmet hooked over an empty chair back. ‘Sure, I ride on Thompson Avenue,’ he told Leroy. ‘It’s part of my daily loop. Fifteen miles, then a veggie burger here, buy a lottery ticket at the newsagent and five more miles around the coastline. You should try a little exercise.’

‘Exercise.’ Leroy grinned as he walked back to Inspector Flint and his lunch. ‘I get all the exercise I need bringing in the bad guys and walking my staffies.’

Whom does Leroy suspect? What evidence points to the thief?

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD How often in our lives have we seen the necessity to

review a plan from its inception- as this expression means? Often an expensive mistake is avoided by careful review.

Anyway, a possible origin of this expression relates to one of America’s most famous cartoonists and satirists of the

early part of the last century Peter Arno. In the 1920’s he produced a great many cartoons for the New Yorker magazine, one of which published in 1928,

showed two boffins clutching blueprints and imperturbably watching an experimental plane explode on

impact. The caption read: ‘Ah well, back to the drawing board.’

THE COLD SHOULDER

Despite current usage, the phrase does not have a romantic origin. In fact, the shoulder in "cold shoulder" is

actually a shoulder of mutton. In the early nineteenth century, when the phrase was first

recorded by Sir Walter Scott, it was customary for a hostess to serve hot meals to visitors who were welcomed

and cold meat to those who had overstayed their welcome.

Since the cold meat given to the unwanted guest was usually a shoulder of mutton , the hostess was said to be

"giving him the cold shoulder"- of mutton, that is.

Whodunnit Solution 33 The Case of the Crooked Bill

Leroy bit into his sandwich and chewed thoroughly before speaking. ‘If you’re going to bring someone in for questioning, I’d choose the guy in the sweaty tracksuit. But you’d better be careful. He’s a boxer.’

The boxer had finished lunch and was wiping his mouth. ‘All right,’ Flint whispered. ‘Tell me quickly.’

‘Because today is Wednesday and he’s running.’ Flint sighed. ‘All right, tell me slowly.’ ‘Our dim witted athlete went to great lengths to

explain his training schedule.’ If anything, Leroy spoke even slower than normal. ‘A day in the gym, then a day sparring, then a day of road work. No days off. If you work backwards from today, that makes last Thursday a running day. He could have found the bag and picked it up. I think he is more likely to have spent time in prison than university.’

‘Could have?’ Flint snorted. ‘Could have?’ ‘I know,’ Leroy agreed. ‘Hardly conclusive. Except he

lied. He told me he went jogging last Wednesday, not Thursday.’

‘Maybe he got mixed up.’ ‘He remembered that Wednesday was his jogging day

and his birthday. Either he’s confused about his birthday…’

‘All right,’ Flint said and pushed himself to his feet. ‘But if he punches me, I’m punching you.’

Let me remind my erudite inspector friend that the former great heavy weight boxing champion and reputed scholar Mike Tyson was reported to have said:

“The same hand that can write a beautiful poem, can knock you out with one punch—that's Poetic Justice.”

I rest my case!!
