Gentlemen,

Thank you to all who joined us for the October meeting

at Capers. Many fine gentlemen told me it was the best

meeting they have ever attended! Wow. The food was

excellent, the speaker candid and highly entertaining.

The bar and ambiance were damn good too.

We make a triumphant return to the Belleville Club for

our November meeting. I know Tara, Grant and James

are working hard at the Belleville Club to take care of us

Sales and Ad'ers. We are fortunate to have so many great establishments, all

within walking distance of my office!

Our speakers continue to be a great mix of sport, comedy (some funnier than

others), business and politics. The longest election in Canadian modern history

is now behind us. And to help focus our energies on our bright future we have

attracted a great guest speaker. This month Scott (not just a pretty face) Reid,

former advisor to Prime Minister Paul Martin will speak off the cuff with us as

he has done throughout his career. Our “no press” rule continues and hopefully

Scott will enjoy the same candour that made the Colonel’s speech so engaging.

Beer and popcorn will be supplied to all members!

Every month the board meets and the headline of the agenda is ‘how can we

continue to improve the customer experience’. Come join us in November to see

what treats we have in store.

Kelly McKinney

SpotlightWEST CITY HONDA

West City Honda opened it’s doors in May of 1975 to owners, Alfons & Gerlinde Micke. At that time, Honda was still new to Canada, but Alfons, impressed with this Japanese product, realized a need for small fuel-efficient vehicles. This realization came about, due to the Oil Crisis of 1973. The Mickes' were not new to the automotive industry as they already owned and operated the Volkswagen dealership, Autohaus Belleville, which they opened in 1970.

With the popularity of the Honda Civic, business was brisk, however, limited numbers of Honda’s were coming into Canada due to the import restrictions placed upon foreign automakers. Customers were given few options as to colour choice and orders had to be placed months in advance. It was difficult to maintain inventory, as most cars were sold prior to arriving at the dealership. At that time, West City Honda was located in an old gas station along Dundas Street West. There was only room for one car to be displayed, therefore, every time it was sold, the local glass company was called to come, remove

the glass and the car could then be taken out. In 1978, West City Honda built a new larger dealership, which is now occupied by the current West City Powersports.

By the late 1970s, the Mickes no longer owned the Volkswagen franchise. They now owned and operated an AMC / Jeep Renault and British Leland franchise. In 1986 AMC / Jeep Renault was replaced with another Japanese franchise and the new dealership was named Loyalist Mazda. By 1992, the Mickes sold Loyalist Mazda, and focused their attention solely on the growing Honda brand.

Greg Sudds received his Bachelor of Business Administration Degree (BBA) in 1990 from Northwood Institute’s Automotive Marketing program in West Palm Beach, Florida. He also holds a Diploma of Automotive Marketing from The Canadian Automotive Institute in Barrie, Ontario. In 1991 Greg met Christine Micke while both were working in Toronto for Toyota Canada Inc. In 1993 the two married and Greg eventually joined West City Honda’s sales force in March of 1994.

In 1999 Greg became General Manager of West City Honda working closely alongside his friend, mentor and father-in-law, Alfons. West City Honda had outgrown their current location, and by the fall of 2001 West City Honda opened the doors to a brand new state of the art facility.

In January of 2006 with the approval of Honda Canada, Greg Sudds became President and Dealer Principal. Since that time, West City Honda, has enjoyed much success and this can be attributed to customer loyalty and award winning products. Greg also believes that his staff are a key factor in their success. Thirty-four full time employees, many of whom have been with the company for decades.

In September of 2012, Greg opened West City Powersports in what was the original West City Honda dealership. This new venture provides the Quinte Region access to Honda’s complete line-up of award-winning products.

A lot has changed in 40 years, but West City Honda’s commitment to delivering the best quality of product and service to it’s customers continues to this day.
