CHART 1

Gross consumption of natural gas by OECD region

Total OECD indigenous production of natural gas decreased by 0.2% in April 2020 compared to April 2019, due to

a large decline observed in OECD Europe (-7.7% y-o-y1). This decline was mainly driven by considerable

decreases in Norway (-8.8% y-o-y), the Netherlands (-10.3% y-o-y) and Denmark (-64.3% y-o-y). Meanwhile, in

the OECD Americas, production of natural gas increased by 1.2% on a year-on-year basis, driven by continued

growth in the United States (+2.2% y-o-y). In OECD Asia Oceania, production rose slightly by 0.3% in April 2020

compared to the same month last year. On a year-to-date basis, total OECD production of natural gas increased

by 2.0%, with production in the OECD Americas on the rise (+3.9% y-t-d2) while a decline was seen in OECD

Europe (-9.0% y-t-d).

Total OECD imports (entries)3 of natural gas fell by 10.9% in April 2020 compared to the same month last year,

led by a significant decrease in OECD Europe (-12.5% y-o-y), as imports from Norway (-19.8% y-o-y) and Ukraine (-

42.0% y-o-y) continued to decline. Similarly, imports to the OECD Americas and OECD Asia Oceania also

experienced declines, by 5.8% y-o-y and 6.2% y-o-y, respectively. In total OECD, LNG imports declined by 9.2% y-

o-y, led by reduced imports from Norway (-65.4% y-o-y) and Qatar (-20.0% y-o-y). On a year-to-date basis, total

OECD gas imports fell by 6.2%.

Total OECD exports (exits)3 of natural gas relatively remained stable (-0.1% y-o-y) in April 2020 compared to April

2019. Growth in the OECD Americas (+10.9% y-o-y) and in OECD Asia Oceania (+7.9% y-o-y), was offset by a

decline in OECD Europe (-5.9% y-o-y). Declines in gas exports from Austria (-17.7% y-o-y), the United States (-

10.5% y-o-y) and Mexico (-8.0% y-o-y) were balanced by increases from other OECD countries. In terms of

pipeline and LNG split, exports by pipeline declined by 2.1% y-o-y, while LNG exports continued to increase

(+6.7% y-o-y). On a year-to-date basis, total OECD gas exports rose by 2.7%.

Total OECD gross consumption of natural gas decreased by 5.3% in April 2020 compared to April 2019 due to

lower demand of natural gas for industrial activities caused by the Covid-19 crisis. A large decrease was observed

in OECD Europe (-17.3% y-o-y), driven by falls in France (-34.7% y-o-y), Italy (-22.9% y-o-y) and Germany (-16.5%

y-o-y). The same trend was observed in OECD Asia Oceania, where decreases were seen in Australia (-10.7% y-o-

y) and Korea (-12.7% y-o-y). The OECD Americas, on the other hand, experienced an increase of 1.2% y-o-y in its

gross consumption due to increased consumption in the United States (+2.1% y-o-y).

A General Note Starting with January 2011 data, the Imports and Exports no longer represent ultimate origins and

destinations but are replaced by Entries and Exits corresponding the amounts that physically crossed the

national boundaries of the country.

Australia The breakdown of export destinations is estimated by the IEA on the basis of OECD imports of natural gas

from Australia.

Austria Most recent data are the best estimates from the Austrian national administration, based on available

preliminary data. Data are usually finalised within three months following the first publication.

Belgium Most recent data on origins of imports and final destinations of exports of LNG are the best estimates from

the Belgian Administration based on available preliminary data.

Canada Data for Canada are submitted by the Department of Natural Resources (Natural Resources Canada, or

NRCan), based on actual and preliminary data from Canada's national statistical agency (Statistics Canada)

and various other sources. In cases where data from these sources are unavailable, estimates are conducted

by NRCan, based on information available at the time, including alternative sources. Data are usually finalised

within three months of the first publication. An important source for any differences between data published

by Statistics Canada and data published by the IEA is data estimated by NRCan or the IEA Secretariat.

Finland Finland is reporting stock levels as of January 2019. Therefore, there is a break in stock levels between

December 2018 and January 2019.

Iceland There is no natural gas data for Iceland, as there is neither production nor consumption.

Israel The statistical data for Israel are supplied by and under the responsibility of the relevant Israeli authorities.

The use of such data by the OECD is without prejudice to the status of the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem and

Israeli settlements in the West Bank under the terms of international law.

Information is based on data published by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources as well as the Central

Bureau of Statistics.

Mexico Observed gross inland deliveries of natural gas from January 2013 onwards are estimated.

Netherlands Starting with January 2019, more complete trade data is reported based on better information from the

GATE terminal. Revisions for historical series are pending.

United Kingdom Exits to the Isle of Man are reported under Non-specified/Other.

There is a break in stocks between March and April 2019 due to inclusion of stock held at LNG terminals.
