OLPH Lenten Mission Fr. Gary Wiesmann from Mandeville, Jamaica will once again visit with us. He came before to make a mission appeal and was quite successful. The week-end he was here, Fr. Kyle was not here. He heard great reports about Fr. Kyle and said he would like to come again to meet him. That is about to happen. We have asked him to lead our Lenten Mission Feb-ruary 25, 26, & 27, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. Our Reconcili-ation Service will be held on Wednesday, February 28. Fr. Gary will preach at all Masses the weekend of February 24 and 25. His Mission is called “FROM

ASHES TO NEW LIFE.” The mission talks are taken

from the prophet Micah …and what does the Lord

require of you, but to ACT JUSTLY, LOVE TENDER-

LY AND WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD.”

Catechism Corner

“Buckskin” Bill Black died last month. Given the large number of former LSU students in our parish, I suppose that many of you may remember him. Anyone who lived in Baton Rouge from the mid fifties to the late eighties would recognize him as the host of Storyland, which by the time it went off the air had earned the distinction of being the longest-running live chil-dren’s television show in the U.S. My minor claim to fame is having been the last regularly scheduled director for the show. My purpose in mentioning this is not simply to honor my former colleague, but to use one of his sayings from the show as a springboard for something else. You see, Bill was an educator,

and he believed that television should do more than just entertain children; it should teach them something as

well. Among the very many of his pithy sayings was one that went something like this: “Loving things and using people is a backwards way; you see, using things and loving people is the way you ought to be.” These few words encapsulated an entire sermon against the objectification of our fellow human beings, people whom we should consider to be our brothers and sisters, children of the Lord. The worst sort of objectifi-cation is that which Archbishop Aymond wrote about in his letter contained elsewhere in this bulletin – pornogra-phy. The pervasiveness of pornography today via the internet has led to an even greater problem – addiction to it – so much so that some young people cannot perform the conjugal act with an actual human being anymore. How does this happen? Well, Satan uses the same technique with which he seduced Eve in the Garden of Eden. He convinced her to focus on the beauty and desirability of the forbidden fruit to the point that she could not see beyond that, and so fell to the temptation. So it is with pornography. Human beings are made in the image and likeness of God; and as Pope St. John Paul II taught in his Theology of the Body, the beauty of that image

engenders an attractiveness that aids in the union of man and woman into a bond of marriage. This leads to their conjugal union which has a procreative and a unitive function which are, respectively, the means of participating in creation and of strengthening the bond between the married couple. Satan’s lie in pornography is getting people to focus so intently on the beauty and desirability that they block out the consequences. Because there is no real person present to the user of pornography, there can be no procreation, and the unitive function then turns inward, triggering the same mechanisms in the brain that bring on addiction to alcohol and drugs. The more this activity is engaged in, the deeper the addiction becomes, to the point that the person so addicted may not even realize they have a problem until something shocks them into see-ing it. If you or someone you know may be struggling with this addiction, there are a number of resources avail-able to help. The Archdiocese of New Orleans offers My House Men's Group, which provides an anonymous set-ting for support, accountability, and concrete steps to overcoming the bondage of pornography addiction; email

[email protected] or call 504-430-3060. Also, the Archdiocese has Pearl Ladies' Group, a confidential Catholic support group for women whose husbands struggle with pornography or other sexual addictions; email [email protected] or call 504-343-3359. Additionally, the Archdiocese has Catholic Counseling Service; nolacatholic.org/catholic-counseling-service, or call 504-861-6245. The First Sunday of Lent

Did you know?

What is Almsgiving? What is Almsgiving? What is Almsgiving? What is Almsgiving? The foundational call of Christians to charity is a frequent theme of the Gospels. During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on "almsgiving," which means donating money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of chari-ty. As one of the three pillars of Lenten practice, almsgiving is "a witness to fraternal charity" and "a work of justice pleasing to God." The three pillars of Lent are Fasting, Almsgiving & Prayer. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2462).

munity. We are grateful for each student here at OLPH!

Church Funny

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catho-lic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted it on the apple tray, “Take only one. God is watching.” Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. One child whispered to another, “Take all you want. God is watching the apples.”
