Speaker:David Murray - Hayward Rotary has made an enormous contribution to the education of children in Hayward. AtCal State East Bay we also care very much about the progress and future success of our students. In 2013, webegan a Financial Literacy class to helpequip students to make good financialdecisions. In class, students make, track, and keep to a budget. They check theircredit report and score, and improve theirscore. Students learn about investments, and make a savings and investment planfor when they graduate. They learn aboutall types of insurance, determine theirown policy needs, and shop for the bestcar insurance. They learn how to get thebest deal on a car, and learn the steps inbuying or renting a home. Students learnhow to manage student loans, apply forgrants and scholarships, and practiceways to save money in college withoutadversely impacting their standard ofliving. Finally, students develop abusiness plan, and make an “elevatorpitch” to potential investors in their business. The presentation at the Rotary Club will describe some of thelessons learned in the class, and the benefits described by the students.

Brief bio: David Murray began teaching at Cal State East Bay in 2011. He greatly respects and admires thestudents’ determination, practicality, sense of humor, and strong care for each other. Prior to teaching, David wasa Deputy Director for Finance and Administration. He’s also served public agencies as a Chief Financial Officer,Fiscal Officer, and Senior Analyst. David has lived in the Bay Area since 1981. He’s been married to Marthesince 1986, and they have two grown sons. He has graduate degrees from UC Berkeley, and theLondon School of Economics.

Students learned not only to budget for their full-time careers, but used the process for theircurrent situation. They applied the techniques to resolve credit report errors and to improve theirFICO scores. Professor Murray was presented with a book, “Why Didn’t I Learn That in School?”for signature and donation to the Hayward Public Library.
