The Saint Paul Area Chamber continues to push hard for a comprehensive, metropolitan-wide transit system. Starting well over 10 years ago, this Chamber led the business efforts to get the Green Line (the Central Corridor light rail transit) to run from Minneapolis to Saint Paul’s Union Depot. We remain committed to ensuring that our members, across the East Metro, have multiple ways to get their employees to and from work and their goods and services moved around the metropolitan region.

But this support does have a condition. Even a casual glance at the Metropolitan Council’s 2030 Regional Transit plan (http://www.metrocouncil.org/planning/transportation/TPP/2010/7_Transit.pdf ) shows an overwhelming bias towards providing services in the West Metro, not the East. There is a chicken and the egg argument at work here, in which the Metropolitan

Council says that the West is where there is demand. We remind them that the demand would increase if they gave us the infrastructure!

East Metro businesses, employees, and residents deserve the same options that someone ten miles away in Minneapolis has. We have an incredible resource in the Union Depot as hub anchor, and we are going to make absolutely sure that we take full advantage of it. I encourage you to read the Met Council’s plan and to be prepared to throw your voice into the mix when push comes to shove.

The Science Museum of Minnesota Presents...BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life

This winter and spring, the Science Museum of Minnesota offers visitors a chance to witness the human body living through time—as it changes, grows, matures, peaks and finally wanes. In BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life, the latest in the groundbreaking anatomy exhibition series that has been seen by more than 35 million people around the world, they’ll see the body throughout the human life cycle and across the arc of aging.

When the original Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS: The Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies premiered at the Science Museum in 2006, it became the most powerful – and most popular – exhibition in Science Museum history, drawing more than 750,000 visitors during its seven-month run. That exhibition gave visitors access to the human body that, until then, only medical students and health professionals had enjoyed. BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life is an all-new version of the exhibition that builds upon and enhances that life-changing experience.

Inside the 14,000-square-foot exhibition, which was designed

by creative and conceptual designer of BODY WORLDS, Dr. Angelina Whalley, visitors will discover more than 200 real human specimens, including 20 full-body plastinates that have never been in Minnesota before. All specimens are preserved through plastination, a remarkable scientific process invented by physician and pioneering anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens.

BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life features plastinated organs and systems in varying stages of health and disease, as well as full-body plastinates in various action poses. Visitors will see a skateboarder, a baseball player, a ballet dancer, figure skaters, a woman executing a yoga pose, and – so appropriately for the State of Hockey – a pair of hockey players in mid-collision.

In addition to showcasing the wonders of human development, the extraordinary real specimens in BODY WORLDS demonstrate the complexity, resilience and vulnerability of the human body in distress, disease and optimal health. Visitors will marvel at the life processes that are captured in the exhibition and leave with a new appreciation of the power we have to keep our bodies healthy throughout the life span.

Tickets for BODY WORLDS are on sale now and may be purchased online at www.smm.org, via phone (651-221-9444), or in person at the Science Museum’s Box Office. Admission into the Science Museum and BODY WORLDS is $27 for adults; $19 for kids ages 4 to 12 and seniors (tickets for BODY WORLDS, exhibit galleries, and Omnitheater are also available). Discounts are available for Science Museum members, groups of 15 or more, and individuals with limited incomes.

In BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life, visitors will take a breathtaking tour of the human life span from conception to old age. It’s a journey they won’t soon forget.

Q. How long have you been an ambassador?

A. Officially, since July of 2012. Unofficially, since the day I was born. My grandfather was the Chamber exec in St. Cloud for nearly 40 years. He used to take me on membership visits when I was a young boy, so the Chamber is in my blood and I’ve always been an ambassador for it.

Q. What do you enjoy most about being a Chamber member?

A. I love meeting other business owners and professionals and listening to their stories. We have so much to learn from each other, and I’m especially interested in the different marketing and networking strategies that are working for others. The Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce provides great opportunities and access to so many local businesses.

Q. What is one piece of advice you would offer fellow members?

A. Get involved! Like anything in life, we get out what we put in. Membership in SPACC is a long-term investment in relationships. Come to Chamber events, be an active member in one of the committees. It’s the people that we meet in life that can take us to the places we dream of.

Q. Fun tidbit?

A. I love being part of a business that I hope you will never need. Realizing that someday you will, and Paul Davis Resoration will be there for you. Everyone eventually has water, fire, mold or storm damage. I enjoy the challenge of marketing to people that don’t know if and when they will need us. Our Ambassador Committee plays a vital role inensuring a fantastic member experience. The team iscomprised of committed and engaged SPACC membersdedicated to attending events, ribbon cuttings, andreaching out to members via phone and personal visits.Interested in joining the team? In 2005, your Chamber created a tradition called Celebrate Business Success.

This award honors those who provide leading examples of how members of the business community contribute to a shared vision of economic success throughout the Saint Paul/East Metro area.

Sponsored by:

At the Chamber’s January Membership Meeting, Commissioner Jim McDonough accepted a Celebrate Business Success award on behalf of the Union Depot. The Union Depot was transformed into a state-of-the-art multimodal regional transportation hub that reopened on December 8, 2012. Last year, the Ramsey County Rail Authority hired the international retail and management corporation, Jones Lang LaSalle, to manage Union Depot and create “The Living Room of St. Paul” experience at the historic landmark. By 2014, Union Depot will offer transportation services via Amtrak, Central Corridor light rail, Jefferson Regional Bus Lines, Metro Transit buses and One-on-One Bicycle Studio.
