2013 Science and Data Committee Priorities and
Progress • Refine committee membership – Complete in October 2013
• Catalog and review FHP assessments– Completed in June 2013– Science and Data Committee Meeting – 2014
• Develop data transfer methods and begin to embed detailed FHP data– In progress at USGS
2013 Science and Data Committee Priorities and
Progress• Develop SOPs for data management and curation using cataloged FHP information– Completed – USGS Funded
• Improve and upgrade the support data system and viewer– New version is now available and work continues – USGS
Funded• Continue refining inland assessment following
core plan– In progress – USFWS and USGS Funded
• Continue refining marine assessment following core plan– In progress – NOAA funded
2014 Science and Data Committee Priorities
• Inland Core Plan– Refine and update 2010 Assessment– Add new national connectivity analysis– Demonstration projects to bring in
process data– Add lakes and reservoirs to Assessment
2015 Inland Assessment Strategy
• Core Plan– Refine and update 2010 Assessment– Add new national connectivity analysis– Demonstration projects to bring in
process data– Add lakes and reservoirs to Assessment
Inland Assessment Progress• Lower 48
– Continuing to add fish and mussel datasets from underrepresented regions
– Added estimates of atmospheric deposition of pollutants
– Added nutrient loading estimates for lower 48 states
– Examining new ways to determine thresholds– Developing greatly improve resolution
fragmentation and connectivity analysis
Assessment Progress• Inland
– Lower 48 • Adding new coal and uranium mining
information• Developing Section 303d data layer• Added new riparian zone land use layer• Incorporating lakes and lakesheds into
assessment
Assessment Progress• Inland
– AK• Delineated watersheds and sub-catchments
in SE AK• Attributing disturbance and fish data in SE
AK – HI
• Data characterizing stream fish assemblages has been attributed
• Refining assessment analysis
2015 Marine Assessment Strategy
• Core Plan– Complete fish/invertebrate stressor
analysis• Bring coastal analysis to same level as
inland– Add new spatial framework for coastal
AK analysis– Add new spatial framework for coastal
HI analysis
Assessment Progress• Marine
– Final stages of refined Gulf of Mexico estuaries assessment• New spatial system developed
– nested geospatial framework consisting of estuary, shoreline, estuarine drainage area, and basin units
• 30+ years of trawl data attributed• Stressor data - land use/land cover,
population density, nutrients, pollution, river flow, estuary eutrophication, and estuary hydrogeomorphic class
Assessment Progress• Marine
– Final stages of refined Gulf of Mexico estuaries assessment• Local habitat disturbance data
– depth, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, Secchi depth, turbidity, and pH.
– Developed a new analytical approach– Started on data acquisition for Atlantic
and Pacific Coasts
Assessment Progress• Marine
– Great Lakes Assessment – UM/MI DNR• Moving independently forward with funding
from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust and GLBFHP
• Geospatial system nearly complete– Rectified US and Canada watershed systems– Developing habitat classification system at this
time
DATA SYSTEM PHASE 2+ Resources: • FY13 USGS Core Science Analytics &
Synthesis providing system architect and developer
• FY13 USGS Core Science Analytics & Synthesis providing data repository manager to work with FHPs for the next 7 months
NFHP Data System Update• Newest version (and *process*) was released
in September 2013• Introduces second viewer for visualizing
priority data themes – Fish data– Connectivity– Projects
The Process: Providing Guidance to Implement Data Management Best Practices
• Standard Operating Procedures which provide step by step guidance for partners.
• NFHP Data Management Team is providing additional help to FHPs and other partners.
• Supports preservation for authoritative sources of NFHP data.
Currently working on the next priority theme: Connectivity – to disseminate data distribution of fish passage barriers.
Data Theme Viewer visualizes available fish data summarized at the HUC12 scale
Priority Data Theme: Connectivity
• Working with FHPs to determine their data needs for determining stream connectivity
• Combined data needs of FHPs and assessment teams will guide how these data are collected and presented via the NFHP Data System
Priority Data Theme: Projects • PSMFC has developed an interim online
project tracking tool to facilitate uniform NFHP project data
• PSMFC is populating the tool with existing information collected from FHPs and USFWS FIS
• Disseminated via NFHP Data System Data Theme Viewer in near future release
PROJECT EFFECTIVENESS MEASURES WORKGROUP
2013 Outcomes: • Consultation with AFWA – Wildlife
Diversity Director• Agreement secured with Foundations
of Success• Work will soon be initiated with
workgroup
2014 Science and Data Priorities• Examine, review and incorporate
Assessment activities underway by FHPs, LCCs, and the National Assessment Teams.– Requesting $20,000 for a Science and Data
Committee Meeting– Requesting $70,000 for GIS support and new FHP
data products• Board Science and Data outreach efforts
– Requesting $12,000 for Science Co-chair travel support
2014 Science and Data Priorities
• Continue development of attributed socioeconomic datasets along with a limited set of analytical tools.– Requesting $35,000 for contracted services
• Continued development of a standardized set of project effectiveness tools– Needed resources being determined at this time
2014 Science and Data Priorities• Continued development of the 2015 inland
assessment– $151,000 for MSU staff – USFWS– $42,300 for data support - USGS, Core Science
Analytics & Synthesis for FY2014• Continued development of the 2015 marine
assessment– $220,000 NOAA in-kind services
2014 Science and Data Priorities – Without Resources
• Full incorporation of process level data (connectivity and hydrology) and biological data into the Inland Assessment for whole US– Need $300,000 for 2 FTEs and multiple workshops to
craft work• Full incorporation of process level data
(connectivity and hydrology) and biological data along with new analytical approaches into the Marine Assessment for whole US– Need $150,000 for 2.0 FTEs
• Development of a coastal AK and HI geospatial framework– Need $180,000 for 1.5 FTEs GIS support
