iptables - History

1 The Netfilter maintainer Patrick McHardy proposed in 2008 to replace iptables with nftables in the future. The project remained in the alpha

stage of development before becoming dormant in 2009. Alternate developments include Xtables2 that seek to gradually improve the code that is already in the Linux kernel.

Nftables

1 'nftables' is a project providing packet filtering and packet

classification on Linux, and it is intended to replace existing iptables,

ip6tables, arptables and ebtables frameworks. nftables is a

combination of a Linux kernel engine, and a userspace utility.

1 It utilizes the building blocks of the Netfilter infrastructure, such as the existing hooks, connection tracking

system, userspace queueing component, and logging subsystem. Also, there is a planned compatibility

layer for the translation of already existing iptables firewall rules into

their nftables equivalents.

Nftables - History

1 On 16 October 2013, Pablo Neira Ayuso did the nftables core pull

request to the mainline kernel tree. It was merged into the Linux kernel mainline on 19 January 2014, with the release of Linux kernel version

3.13.

Nftables - Overview

1 nftables also offers an improved userspace API that allows Atomic operation|atomic

replacements of one or more firewall rules within a single Netlink transaction. That

speeds up firewall configuration changes for setups having large rulesets; it can also help

in avoiding race conditions while the rule changes are being executed. Also, a planned

compatibility layer is going to provide translation of already existing iptables

firewall rules into their nftables equivalents.

Buffalo Metro Rail

1 'Buffalo Metro Rail' is the public transit rail system in Buffalo, New York, United States; it

is operated by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA). The system consists of a single, long line that runs for most of the length of Main Street (New York State Route 5) in the City of Buffalo, from

First Niagara Center in Downtown Buffalo to the south campus of the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York|University at

Buffalo in the northeast corner of the city.

Buffalo Metro Rail - Operations and practical information

1 In July 2008, the NFTA claimed the passenger count eclipsed the

previous year's tally by 23%. As a result of this, in September 2008, the NFTA began an earlier starting time

to the weekday schedule in response to an 11% increase in ridership over

eight months of growth.
