Once again, Yarralin School would like to
express a huge debt of gratitude to the
Walangeri Corporation, staff of the RSAS
Team, the fine cooking of the team that
created breakfast and lunch for the children
of the school, the staff of the local shire,
Christy and Evan from the Yarralin Store,
workers from the CDP team, the amazing
Medical Clinic staff, the creative crew from
Hellimuster, Mick from Power and Water, the
local Police and Father Christmas, who I think
we would all agree was a highlight…..most of
all thanks to you, the Yarralin families who
support the school so beautifully.
On Wednesday the 12th of December,
Yarralin School hosted a Community
Celebration where students of Yarralin
School were presented with their class
awards, and later in the evening they all
performed a concert, which involved
singing, dancing and an impressive
presentation of Geography and Science.
One of the highlights of the day was Father
Christmas arriving in a RED HELICOPTER to
deliver gifts and sweets to the children of
Yarralin.
YARRALIN SCHOOL CELEBRATES
By Kerry Romanis, Yarralin School Principal
The community hosted a BBQ catering for 150
people, and the night ended with a spectacular
light show provided by Mother Nature,
thankfully, everyone was home by then.
Yarralin School would like to thank community
members for supporting the event, and to
especially thank those who stayed later to
pack things away.
Let’s hope we continue
the tradition of being
one of the best
attending schools in
the Northern
Territory…. Yarralin is
the BEST!!!! HO HO
HO…..Merry Christmas
to One and ALL.
RSAS SUPERVISOR GRADUATES –
CONGRATULATIONS WESLEY!
My name is Wesley Campbell, I’m from Yarralin Community, I am a traditional
owner and I have lived in Yarralin ever since I was a kid and moved to Daguragu
back and forward to spend a lot of time with my mum’s side of the family. I’m also a
husband and a father to five beautiful children.
My job is as a RSAS Supervisor (Remote School Attendance Strategy) which is
funded by the federal government and run by the Victoria Daly Regional Council – it
is a program designed to be driven by the community to suit local needs. I have
been doing this job as a supervisor for nearly a year and before that as a part time
staff member.
My job is to make sure kids go to school every possible day, early in the morning to
have breakfast, and to increase attendance rates in remote schools so all children
have the opportunity to get a good education. I also catch up with the families when
their kids are not at school and get involved with the families and kids to help them
reach their goals when they get older. My job is also to work with other
stakeholders such as the health clinic and the police.
I have recently graduated with my Certificate 3 in Community Night Patrol and after
18 months I have successfully completed the course. My recent graduate ceremony
was held at Katherine. I would like to continue using my skills to help the
community by making sure my number 1 priority is my duty of care to my clients,
workmates, bystanders, other stakeholders and myself.

Happy December!
As we get closer to Christmas and seasonal rains, Community need to be prepared for Yarralin
being cut off due to flooding.
Preparation……..
Make sure that you have plenty of staple foods, such as flour, water, sugar, tea, coffee, power
cards and whatever else you may need. (Especially those that live in Lingara or Pigeon Hole. It is
YOUR responsibility to ensure that you have enough food to last at least a week if the rivers and
creeks become flooded.
*If you are sick come into town and stay with family.
*Make sure that your car is registered and suitable to be driven on wet and muddy roads.
*Come and see Yarralin Police to register your car, before you get caught and get a fine!
Merry Christmas from Yarralin Police…Ray, Sharon and John
YARRALIN POLICE NEWS
By Malcolm Shaw
Out and about in his own country, Johnny Dan took me to Jugarloo
(Mosquito Flats) in search for Warlagarri trees (Ironwood) to make
boomerangs. We found and cut the branch off one tree which we then
cut into 3 pieces. Then we split the wood to make 6 boomerangs. The
boomerangs we made from the branch of the Warlagarri tree are used
for fighting, singing in ceremonies and other important cultural aspects
during ceremonial seasons.
One particularly important use of the Warlagarri wood is when we use
it for poison cousins to burn and give it to their son-in-laws to be.
During the ceremony the mother-in-law dances close to the son-in-law
and the burnt wood is handed to him by the mother-in-law. They both
grab the Warlagarri and throw the Warlagarri wood while the mother-
in-law keeps dancing until the next morning. After the ceremony is
over, the mother and father give their daughter’s hand in marriage –
this only happens through their skin name.
Skin names are a part of the kinship system that determines how our
people relate to each other.
