WITH $175,000 and Group 1 glory ahead, Geoff Collins paraded Zulu Zara to the start before a huge crowd that braved the elements.

The intermittent showers had desisted, and when they arrived at the 525 metres start the SuperTAB fa-vourite was the recent hero in Group events, Dyna Tron, who had drawn the six and was at $3.50, whilst on the second row of betting it was the

red vested Zara Zulu at $4.20. Punters also kept safe in-form

NSW contestant, Oaks Road ($5.10) and the Graeme Bate trained David Bale ($5.50), with the others at a dou-ble-figure quote.

Boxrise saw the expected early pace shown by Zara Zulu, who took them past the post the first time in 5.03, ahead of Peggy May and Oaks Road.

As always, the first turn is ”make or break” in greyhound racing, with Peggy May, Oaks Road, Audacious Elle and Dyna Tron all in bother, thus leaving the Bunyip based bitch hold-ing a handy lead.

After arriving at the next check-point in 17.82 when three lengths clear of Gordon Bale, Zara Zulu proved impossible to catch in the run to the judge.

The Ros Hume trained daughter of Mogambo and Zulu Zepha scored by one and a quarter lengths to Gordon Bale in 30.14, on a track that had copped a drenching in the previ-ous 48 hours, whilst finishing the race off well in third place was Dyna Tron.

Leading studmaster in Gippsland, Geoff Collins, who stands Mogambo, a brilliant greyhound on the track, said, “I’ve been involved in two pre-vious Australian Cups. And if you can’t be happy winning one of the biggest races in the nation… well, you’ll never be satisfied.”

Mogambo has already produced a Group 2 winner and a track record-holder, so this certainly tops it off.

“And box one was perfect, as she gained some advantage in such a great field.”

“In the heat she proved that she has the ability to compete with the others, as far as speed is concerned, but you do have to have things stacked in your favour if you’re to beat dogs like Oaks Road and Dyna Tron,” Geoff informed.

“Zulu Zepha has our lines, but we got her from a friend.”

“She’s by Cruise Creek, a sire we

used to stand at stud, and she’s out of Watusi Zepha, a three-quarter sister to Hotshot.”

“And if you look at her pedigree then you’d reckon it was ours.”

So what’s on the agenda for our latest Group 1 winner?

“Our main aim with Zara Zulu is the Warrnambool Classic, because she’s already paid up for, and the Golden Easter Egg that’s over three

weeks, plus we’ve got the Sapphire Crown a bit later on.”

Zara Zulu tackled the National Futurity at The Gardens and after winning a heat brilliantly, found trou-ble in the final.

In 2002 Collins and Hume sam-pled success in the flagship sprint event at The Meadows, having raced the Rob Britton prepared Isa Brown.

NEW ZEALAND stayer, Thrilling Brat scored a runaway win in the fi-nal of the Group 1 Macro Meats Aus-tralian Stayers Cup run over 725 me-tres at The Meadows last Saturday night. Looking perfectly boxed in the pink, the son of Hallucinate and Thrilling Faith was second pick on SuperTAB with punters at $3.90, whilst the dog that defeated him in the heat, fastest qualifier, Shimaguni

was favourite from box one at $2.10. Third pick was Echelon at $5.70, with Red Hot Andy the only other runner in the market at $7.20. The remaining quartet were given little or no hope; Double Champ ($24.90), Adelle Bale ($25.70), Befit-ting ($29.50) and the reserve, Slick Lee ($30.60). Boxrise saw a good start before Adelle Bale quickly found the front and led to the first mark in 4.94.

Thrilling Brat out wide had quickly raced to second with Shima-guni over on the fence third, just ahead of Befitting and Slick Lee. Thrilling Brat put the speed on around the outside to take over on the side and sped around to the judge with a lap to travel in 15.91. Shimaguni had moved to second spot but was trailing the leader by four lengths, whilst there was a gap to Adelle Bale third, a half length in

advance of Befitting on the rail. Thrilling Brat was making every post a winner along the back, getting to the third marker in 29.38 and his lead was now six lengths over Shimaguni, with at least seven lengths to Adelle Bale third trying to keep up. Up front Thrilling Brat was giving them a galloping lesson and rounding the home bend he basically needed to fall over to lose. Thrilling Brat was a “mile” ahead when they straightened for the run-in and raced to the line 11¾ lengths clear of Adelle Bale, with Shimaguni hanging in third spot, a half length away. Double Champ was the next home in front of Slick Lee, Red Hot Andy, Befitting, with Echelon whipping them in. Thrilling Brat registered 42.34 to bring up his first win in three tries at the trip, taking his career tally to 20 wins and seven placings from 33 starts, while the $75,000 first prizemoney took his tally to $154,008. Owned by Gary Harding, Thrilling Brat is trained at Tirau by Karen Walsh, who told us, “He’s pretty good when he gets his draw and gets on the bunny.” “He’d been getting out well but run-ning wide and losing ground.” “However, he’s been getting away quite well at The Meadows, and in this race he was out very well.” “Once he was in front I was feeling comfortable, but you still hold your breath until it’s over,” added Karen. “This has been pretty tough on all of these dogs, as it was his third staying race in three weeks.” “It was ridiculously hot last week and fortunately ‘Brat’ recovered very well from the run.”

We asked Karen what was in store. “I’m off to Sydney by road on Tues-day. I’ve decided to stay in Australia and put him in the Association Cup at Wentworth Park.” Finally, Karen added, “I’ve won a Group 1 before, but nothing like this financially, it was a great thrill.” “And to know we had all of New Zealand behind us, that was marvel-lous, and the people over here have been incredibly helpful too.” “I stayed at Ian Garland’s place, and they looked after us very well.” “Marg Long and the MGRA were very helpful too; I can’t thank them enough, it’s been wonderful.”

NONE WENT faster early than Beaumaris sprinter, Fast Rate, who cut to the rail from the five gate and recorded 5.01 to lead Lektra Ottens and Prince Holyfield into the first bend.

On a mission in the rain, the Sam Labozzetta trained chaser was still ahead in 17.85 coming off the back when being hotly pressed by Prince Holyfield and Lektra Ot-tens.

In his quest for victory, Prince Holyfield chopped to the rail on the turn, checking the early leader, then came away.

He took out the opening Rover Mowers Grade 5 heat by three lengths in a new PB and Best Of Night 29.93, downing Lektra Ot-tens, while there was a length and three quarters to third placed Stet-son Donna.

Raced by mother and son combo, Diane and Ray Bartolo at Avalon, the son of Token Prince and Betty’s Angel has now won 10 times with four placings from 18 outings, whilst over 525 metres at The Meadows his scorecard re-veals five wins in nine goes.

WITH the advantage of the inside draw, Amado hit the ground running in the next heat, taking them through the first mark in 5.05 with a handy break over Proven Knox and Malvado.

Having come off the back in 17.86, the Colin Brennan owned, Jamie Karamatic trained chaser was eight lengths ahead turning for home and went on to win easily.

Second, beaten six and a half lengths in 30.34 was the fast fin-ishing wide tracker, Maverick Ti-ger, while Lacomare overcame plenty of bad checks in running to snare the skinny end of the prize.

Amado (El Galo - Enticed Lass) has now won three of 10 starts at the track and distance, as part of her 31 starts for 10 wins and seven placings overall.

In other Grade 5 heats, Imry Bale came from the four trap over-came an early setback and cut to the rail on the first turn.

That was the winning move. The son of Go Wild Teddy and

Amity Bale was still a length be-hind Explosive Drop nearing the

third corner but strode to the front soon after. Notching his fifth win after six attempts over 525 metres on the Broadmeadows layout, the Paul Wheeler owned, Graeme Bate trained dog won by a length and three quarters to State Of Bling and third placed Cosmic Cooper in 30.36.

But Paul Wheeler wasn’t fin-ished there, as the penultimate round was taken out by Lorita Bale, trained by Steve Collins. Lorita Bale paid $6.10 on the TAB, but it’s what’s referred to in racing parlance as a “Doctor bet”... you can get better. And the bookies did feel rather generous too, as one well known punter sampled the $7.50 on offer. From box seven, Lorita Bale gave nothing else a chance.

She registered 5.13 early to lead Ruby Ha Ha and Battle Rose

into the initial bend then set up a race winning break along the back, halting the timer at 17.98.

Three lengths clear of Battle Rose approaching the homer turn, she held on to beat the wide run-ning, fast finishing Ultra Cool by two lengths in 30.39, while Suron Undercover ran on well for third.

By Hallucinate from Licorice Bale, Lorita Bale has notched 15 wins with nine placings after 53 outings, and two from five at The Meadows.

The final heat went to Chyna Run, who clocked splits of 5/.05 and 17.85 in her all the way 30.10 romp, downing Nova Vite and Black Benji by a length and a quarter.

Trained by Mark Delbridge for John Falvey, the daughter of Surf Lorian and Motoring sampled her first success at the Northcorp Boulevard venue, whilst it was the red brindle chaser’s seventh vic-tory from 29 attempts.

She’s back! AN OMINOUS SIGN for others was when Shereen Bale broke back onto the winner’s list by an-nexing the Rover Mowers 525 metres Free For All.

Having been racing in the dol-drums of late, the classy sprinter easily overcame the five trap and sped to the front, clocking 5.06 to lead Dyna Gala and Chilly Babe around the first bend.

When the white and brindle daughter of Over Flo and Horizon Bale got away from her rivals along the back straight and paused the timer at 17.81 (Best), the race was as good as over.

Leading combo, Graeme Bate and Paul Wheeler’s Shereen Bale charged past the post two and a half lengths ahead of Dyna Gala in 30.04, which was well below her 29.68 PB, while Lektra Jay stormed into third place, a neck away. A big race player for most of her track career, Shereen Bale now won 20 of her 60 starts, and along with 26 placings has aggregate prizemoney tallying $244,915.

MAJOR ATTENTION was given to the Richmond meeting on Saturday night when the Club staged four heats of the Group 2 World 4 Pets Rich-mond Derby.

With the qualifiers boasting train-ers of the ilk of Jason Mackay, Marie Burton, Neil Falls, Steve White, Norm Becroft, Anthony Lord and Doreen Drynan, it is a fitting tribute to a great series.

THE opening heat was taken out by Path To Vegas for Jason Mackay, proving too speedy when defeating a

gallant Mr. Gazmick by two and a quarter lengths in 30.60.

In the second semi-final, Jason Mackay’s runner caused a huge boilover when Chiseled led from the

first corner and staved-off the chal-lengers to score at huge odds of $21.

Race favourite, Cold Fusion looked every chance of going past Chiseled out of the back straight but came off of heels leaving the back straight and was checked badly enough which ultimately cost the greyhound the race.

Chiseled ran a very respectable 30.54 to score by a length over the luckless Cold Fusion.

IN the next heat, Steve White’s trained Paua Of Darkness produced a dominant performance.

Racing on the outside of early pacesetter, Go Mighty Shiraz through the first turn, Paua Of Darkness crossed and checked Go Might Shiraz

on the turn into the back straight and from thereon dashed away.

Paua Of Darkness scored by three lengths to Go Mighty Shiraz, re-cording the fastest semi performance, 30.44.

ALL EYES were on the Victo-rian campaigner, Radley Bale in the heat four but a moderate beginning resulted in him being hung up be-tween Undisputed Dos and Sure As shortly after the start and quickly shunted the southerner back to last.

With Radley Bale’s Derby hopes quashed, up front Sure As and El Caballo set the early pace.

Sure As used plenty of the track along the back straight and Undis-puted Dos gained a saloon passage

rails run coming off the back straight to make it a line of three. The trio spread across the track entering the home straight, with Bullwinkle and Zipping Lad close behind them.

In the run home Undisputed Dos, El Caballo and Sure As fought out a soul-stirring battle only to be joined in the last few strides by the late fin-ishing Zipping Lad.

When the judge called a halt there were noses separating the four greyhounds.

Anthony Lord’s Undisputed Dos got the nod over El Caballo and scored in 30.87.

The scene is set for a brilliant final next week and early sectionals will be vital.

Chiseled has now won three of his past four starts at Richmond. His latest victory was in 30.54 on March 3 for the Really Bring It Up 2 Syn. Path To Vegas made it three on the trot at Richmond with his latest all the way win on March 3 in 30.60.

When you can boast parents the ilk of Bombastic Shiraz and Paua To Burn, its no wonder Paua Of Darkness can register 30.44 at Richmond.


VICTORIAN BITCH, Katie Merry stays in town this week for a tilt at the Group 2 Queensland Futurity series.

The royally bred daughter of Go Wild Teddy and Miss Mini Mouse warmed up for the series with an all the way win in the Winged Runner Trophy at Albion Park last Thursday night.

Katie Merry made her race debut at Albion Park in the 520 metres fea-ture and held off the favourite, Made To Fly to win by a head in 30.22, while Surfin' Steffi finished on well to get third, four and three quarter lengths away.

Katie Merry is raced by Ben Rid-dle and trained by Kelly Bravo.

Kelly and husband, Brett had a fabulous 2011 with champion sprinter, Kilty Lad, winning two Group 1 finals, the Maturity and the Adelaide Cup.

Ryan Ayre handled Katie Merry for the Winged Runner Trophy, and he had brought the bitch back with him the previous Monday.

Ryan had been in Melbourne with

his sprint star, Bogie King and the Bravos asked if he could bring Katie Merry north for this race and then the Queensland Futurity series.

“When I go to Melbourne with our dogs, we work them at Brett and Kelly’s track,” said Ryan.

“I couldn’t have asked for her to travel any better or settle in any bet-ter.”

“She’s never left an ounce of food since she arrived.”

Ryan has kept the bitch in his kennels for this week’s heats of the Futurity.

“Brett and Kelly said they ex-pected the bitch to race very well tonight,” said Ryan. “She is very good first-up on a track.”

The bitch has an excellent record of nine wins and eight placings from 21 starts.

She had been a Sandown winner on February 23 in a fast 29.67.

Katie Merry outsped the brilliant Spindle to the first turn in a 5.71 first section and then opened a big break through an 11.69 second sec-tion.

Made To Fly loomed up on the home turn and looked certain to win.

But Katie Merry fought back gamely to hold on for a head victory.

Ace up Gary’s sleeve WILD ACE will be a much improved sprinter for this week’s Group 2 Queensland Derby final at Albion Park, according to breeder, owner and trainer, Gary Palmer.

He led throughout to win a heat last Thursday night in 30.13.

Wild Ace (Collision - Halzani) scored by four and a half lengths over Blue’s On Parade, with six and a quarter lengths to third placed Bralyn Grebes.

Wild Ace has always been a hot prospect since he ran a near track record at Lismore a couple of months ago.

“I trialled him at Ipswich last week and he went 30.50 but he blew-up after the race,” said Gary after last week’s win.

“I believe there is still a lot of improvement left in him, even after tonight’s run.”

“I would like to see him after two more races.”

“I would be confident of him breaking 30.00 around Albion Park with a couple of more runs under his belt.”

Gary heads into the Derby. the biggest final he has been in during his training career.

Wild Ace took his record to eight wins and five placings in 18 starts.

“If he stands up to racing, at 30 months, I believe he could be a better than handy middle distance dog as well,” said Gary.

REG KAY believes McElle is a much better short course sprinter than 520 metres star.

But the son of Collision and Elle McState just has to be stretched to 520 metres because there are so many top class races available to him.

McElle led throughout to win a heat of the Queensland Derby at Al-bion Park last Thursday night in 30.40, taking his record to 15 wins from just 24 starts.

But the dog has already estab-lished a couple of short course track records whilst campaigning in NSW in the past few months.

“He would be sensational if he was kept to sprints,” said Reg.

But with races like the 520 metres Derby, McElle has to be stretched to his limit of endurance.

He began brilliantly to lead at the first turn in a 5.68 first section and then scored by two and a half lengths over Whirlwind Dexter, with a half length to El Fiddy Cent third.

Kay knows his dog will be im-proved by the run for this week’s Derby final.

“He had not had a 520 metres run since the Young Guns,” said Reg. “He needed the run tonight.”

UNDERRATED CHASER, Buckaringa Lad racked-up an-other good win at Angle Park last Thursday night when the Narvette Treloar trained chaser took out the 515 metres Thorne Building Mixed 3rd/4th Grade. Drawn box seven and starting at $7.00 behind race favourite, Goosebumps ($3.00), Buckaringa Lad came out running and rode a check early to cross the field and hold the early lead over Kailua Bay through the first turn. Showing the way by three lengths over Kailua Bay in the back straight, Buckaringa Lad was traveling sweetly and reached the top turn with his lead intact. Rounding the final bend with his lead reduced to just a length, Buckaringa Lad kicked back strongly and held Kailua Bay all the way to the line. The son of Brumby Lad and Kanowna Belle scored by a length and a half to Kailua Bay in 30.18, with Only Jess making late ground in third place. A good beginner with bril-liant early pace, Buckaringa Lad took his record to 17 wins and 23 placings from just 61 career starts.

Troy’s our boy THREE SEMI-FINALS of the time honored SA St. Leger over 515 metres were run at Angle Park last Thursday night, with the first two past the post along with the two fastest third placegetters making their way through to the final.

VICTA TROY atoned for his shock defeat to Eva’s Flame in the heats when he took out the opening round for trainer, Ron Schadow. Drawn box eight and starting as the $2.90 elect, Victa Troy propelled out of the boxes and showed sizzling early burn to cross the field and easily lead Darren Bale through the first turn. Skipping four lengths clear of Darren Bale in the back straight, Victa Troy was showing his ri-vals a clean set of paws and maintained his pace to reach the top turn with a five lengths break. Rounding the bend still five lengths clear of Darren Bale un-able to do any better, Victa Troy coasted to the line under no pres-sure, with Fridli Bale running into second place. The son of Where’s Pedro and Teelah passed the post almost six lengths ahead of Fridli Bale in Best Of Night and a new personal best 29.90, with Darren Bale holding down third place. WOT PRICE JACK over-came the odds before bringing up his first win on the track for trainer, Mick Giniotis. Drawn in box two in the sec-ond semi and starting at $12.00 behind popular elect, Lektra Train ($2.40), Wot Price Jack began nicely and showed pace on the rail to hold the early lead over Buddy Magician through the first turn. Leading by a couple of lengths over Lektra Train in the back straight, Wot Price Jack was traveling like a winner and ex-tended his advantage to three lengths at the top turn. Still holding a comfortable break through the final bend, Wot Price Jack finished well to hold Lektra Train at bay along the home straight, while there was a

big gap to the others. The son of Hallucinate and Red Penny cruised home three and three quarter lengths clear of Lektra Train in 29.91, with Buddy Magician holding on for third.

KOOMBOOYANA GIRL put in a bold front running dis-play and made it a one-act affair for trainer, Bosco Stamenkovic. Poorly drawn in six, yet start-ing well in the market at $2.70, Koombooyana Girl jumped safely and showed sizzling pace to cross the field and hold the early lead over Trumby through the first turn. Slipping away to lead by three lengths over Trumby in the back straight, Koombooyana Girl was giving her rivals a galloping lesson, extending her break to five lengths at the top turn. Rounding the final bend with the race in her keeping, Koom-booyana Girl finished the race off well. The daughter of Big Daddy Cool and Koombooyana Star won by four and a half lengths to Trumby in a new personal best 29.96, while Jessenia Bale fin-ished hot on their heels in third place.

Ken’s embargo FULL EMBARGO notched his 10th career win at his 42nd start at Angle Park last Thursday night when the Ken McAuley trained chaser took out the Lake Resort Hotel Grade 4 over 515 metres. An $8.00 chance drawn box four, Full Embargo shot out of the boxes and showed plenty of pace to hold the early lead over Snuggle Me through the first turn. Leading by a couple of lengths in the back straight, Full Embargo was under pressure ap-proaching the top turn as Snuggle Me clipped his heels. Rounding the final bend two lengths clear of Koubek, with Snuggle Me losing ground after the check, Full Embargo had to dig deep to hold onto a slender lead over the closing stages.

The son EA’s Itzaboy and Full Reign saluted the judge a neck clear of Koubek in 30.36, with Prince Ben close up in third place.

Gawler Queens THE GAWLER Pets Tucker Queens Cup final was run over 531 metres at Gawler last Tues-day, with Gypsy Spy turning the table on her better fancied rivals to take the prize for trainer, An-gela Modra. With the same eight runners in the final as what contested the heat a week earlier, most punters expected it to be a race in three between heat winner, Crazy Hear, runner-up Hannah McLaren, and third placed Jainamo. Poorly drawn in box seven and friendless in betting at $22.00, Gypsy Spy jumped fairly then mustered speed out wide to cross into second place through the first turn, where Jainamo led, with Hannah McLaren third. Trailing Jainamo by four lengths in the back straight, Gypsy Spy started to inch back ground and reached the top turn within three lengths of the leader. Making ground through the final bend to straighten for home within two lengths of Jainamo, Gypsy Spy finished with big strides out wide.

Getting past Jainamo over the closing stages with Hannah McLaren flashing into second place, the daughter of Big Daddy Cool and Brooklyn Rain crossed the line three quarters of a length clear of Hannah McLaren in 31.29, with Jainamo third.

THE TRAINING partnership of Ra-chel Scott and Mike Chapman gets its first chance of Derby success after rank outsider, Mocha Shocker turned in a surprise Queensland Derby heat victory at Albion Park last Thursday night.

C h a p m a n s a i d h e w a s “reasonably confident” the dog could give the heat a shake when he drew a wide box.

Mocha Shocker (Give Me Five - Am Classy) rattled home late to grab Bellagio Lad to win by three quarters of a length in 30.38.

Early leader, Franklin Fury was third. a length and three quarters away.

Mocha Shocker is a much im-proved galloper, having won his past two at Albion Park, the previous in a Novice when again he rattled home late to win.

“This is the kennel’s first Derby finalist,” said Mike, who was stand-ing in for trainer, Rachel.

Deb Arnold bred the dog and gave Rachel and Mike a pup from the litter.

“This is a breed that continues to improve, so what he is doing now, he will improve on after he turns two and a half,” said Mike.

“Dogs like Classy Cha Cha, etc., have all done that. I just wish he could improve his first section.”

Mocha Shocker was well back in the early stages but quickly worked into third along the back straight but had loomed up to be challenging for the lead on the home turn.

It was his third win in 10 starts

hopes his Queensland Derby luck gets a change this week with his highly promising young dog, Hanson Senor.

Hanson Senor (Give Me Five - Hanson Charm) came off the rails draw to wear down Seldom Said to win a heat of the Queensland Derby at Albion Park last Thursday night.

He scored by two lengths in 30.30, with a neck to Premier De-mand finishing well for third.

Hanson Senor looked something special when he won at Albion Park in 30.10 on February 6, and then confirmed that when he wore down Seldom Said to win the Young Guns final two weeks ago.

Allen has had two Queensland Derby finalists in the past.

“It’s been a while since I did,” he said. “Hanson Ned was unplaced in a final and Hanson Supreme ran third behind Roanokee.”

He believes Hanson Senor is a great chance in the final.

“He’s very consistent,” he said, “and he just keeps proving himself.”

The victory was his ninth in 19 starts and he has been placed six times.

HOBART track record holder, Ber-germeister returned to winning form last week, notching two wins in the space of three days.

Bergermeister scored in Hobart last Monday week and followed that up with a near all the way win in an Invitation over 461 metres at the same venue last Thursday night.

The dog had been sadly out of form, with many pundits believing the dog might have been past his use by date.

But trainer, Mick Stringer has been able to rejuvenate the dog that at one stage was being hailed a potential superstar.

It was his second win in the space of three days, having been successful in Launceston three nights earlier.

Bergermeister's trainer, Mick Stringer couldn't says exactly why the dog had regained form.

“I don’t really know why he lost form,” Stringer said. “He went off the boil and just seemed to lose interest, and it was a matter of trying to change things around with his train-ing regime, and that's all I could do.”

“He may have had a low grade virus but he was still good in the coat and good in the eye.”

“In the end I just kept him away from the track and freshened him up, and it seems to have done the trick,” he said.

Bergermeister won well in Hobart wearing the black vest on the Monday night and carried the same vest in what was almost a mirror im-age performance to win three nights later.

On Thursday night he unleashed a brilliant second split to lead com-fortably turning for home then went

on to defeat Lika Whisper by two lengths, with Mojito a half length astern, just in advance of November Digger.

“The field he beat tonight (Thursday) was good because it had Lika Whisper, who’d finished second in the Launceston Cup, and Novem-ber Digger, who has been racing really well of late, so there was a bit if depth in the field he beat.”

“At the end of the day I’m just glad to have him back racing keenly because while he’s in this frame of mind, he’'ll be competitive in any-thing he tackles,” Stringer said.

Bergermeister was one of the best dogs racing in Tasmania last year, and Stringer admits he thought the dog had the potential to take the grey-hound racing world by storm.

But it was the dog’s effort in the Group 1 Hobart Thousand final that gave Stringer an indication that all was not right with the dog.

“When he didn’t perform below expectations in the Hobart Thousand I thought that run was well below par, and when he didn’t race at all well two starts after that, then I knew there was a problem.”

“Like I said, I’m just so pleased to have him back chasing keenly, and hopefully he can get back to where he was last year, consistently breaking 26.00 around Hobart,” he said.

Sour Pop’s acid test IN-FORM dog, Sour Pop continued on his winning way in Hobart last week with a near all the way victory in the Tasfreight Mixed 4th/5th Grade Stake over 599 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart.

It was the dog’s third win from his past four starts, and fifth victory on the Hobart circuit.

The Russell Watts trained dog has shown a liking for the middle distances, so his trainer is about to put him to the test and step him up to the longer journeys.

“We don’t know for sure how he’ll handle stepping up to 700 me-tres, but we’ll have the answer soon enough because he’ll be entered for the long distance medley series up north next week, and that should give us an insight as to where we are headed with him, as far as the longer journeys are concerned,” he said.

Sour Pop (Where’s Pedro - Some Chance) has excelled over the middle distances… at Devonport (580m) and Hobart (599m)… winning three times at Devonport and twice in the is-land’s capital city.

Whilst the dog is about to be tested over the longer journeys, Watts is not convinced the dog is up to top class over those trips.

“I doubt we would head him to the National Distance Championship because he is not a dog that likes to find the rail, and I think a dog has to be able to do that to excel at the top level.”

“He likes to race two or three off the rail wherever he races, and that allows other dogs to get up on his inside, and that’s how he was beaten

at Devonport the other week by De-cembrist,” he said.

In that race, Decembrist drew box two and kept pushing up to share the lead, but when they turned for home Sour Pop would not drop down to the rail when he was clear of Decembrist.

Even though the eventual winner eased and got to the outside to run Watts’ dog down, it might have been a different story had Sour Pup hugged the rail earlier in the race.

Pup is ready to rock BROADMARSH trainer, Keith Nich-ols has a handy team of juveniles in his kennel, and one that looks to have a sound future is Ready To Rock.

Ready To Rock notched his first win in Tasmania from only two tries when he led and staved-off all chal-lengers to score by a half length from Jody Girl, with Seven Bells four

lengths away third. The pup put the writing on the

wall with his first run in the state when second to Tommy Teeko at Hobart a week earlier.

With that run under his belt, he went into last Thursday night’s event a stronger betting proposition, and punters rallied, sending him around as the $1.70 favourite.

He began well from box one and kept burrowing up to hold out his main rival, Jody Girl, who stayed with him to the top turn.

But Ready To Rock slipped two lengths clear turning for home and had enough in reserve to hold out Jody Girl by a half length.

Ready To Rock began his racing career in Victoria, where he had three starts at Warragul for a 26.37 success over 460 metres, plus an unplaced run at Sandown.

Minister for Racing Denis Napthine said the Racing Integrity C o m m i s s i o n e r p r o v i d e d independent oversight of integrity issues across all three racing codes – thoroughbred, harness and greyhounds – and helped ensure the highest standard of integrity assurance through its role as investigator and auditor. “The Victorian Coalition Government has made a firm commitment to ensure racing integrity in our state reflects absolute best practice and this is why Sal Perna will continue to play a key role in providing independent oversight of integrity processes and practices in Victorian racing,” Dr. Napthine said.

“ T o d a y ’ s a n n o u n c e m e n t adds to the list of c o m m i t m e n t s delivered by the V i c t o r i a n C o a l i t i o n Government by leading the nation in keeping racing f r e e f r o m corruption.

“Already, the Coal i t ion Government has committed $4 million over four years from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund to boost drug research capacity at Racing Analytical Services Limited. This funding will protect against people attempting to gain an unfair advantage over their competitors. “I would like to acknowledge the contribution Mr. Perna has made to the Victorian racing industry since his initial appointment in 2010 and congratulate him on his re-appointment for a further two years,” Dr. Napthine said.

METROPOLITAN RACING got underway on Friday night with con-stant rain, lending us all a sobering reminder of the loss and inconven-ience that’s being experienced by so many New South Wales and Victoria, as a result of widespread flooding.

The Verhagen kennel com-menced the night with a city winner when Where’s My Dollar, coming off the back of two recent Dapto victo-ries, held on to win after displaying good early box speed.

Where’s My Dollar established a clear lead into the back straight ahead of Harry Ostane and Seductive, which was ultimately responsible for a game performance.

Seductive made a determined effort to overhaul the leader in the closing stages of the race but the run was hampered by a collision on the home turn, which forced Seductive off-balance and turned the greyhound sideways.

After regaining balance in the straight, Seductive drove home on the outside but was too late to catch Where’s My Dollar.

Irinka Gabby had to pull out all

stops to win the Betfair Stake over 720 metres.

Beginning tardily, Irinka Gabby railed up quickly to take the lead at the first turn.

Zipping along early in 16.31 to the post the first time, and clocking 25.45 for the opening lap, Irinka Gabby led easily over Dana Travis along the back straight.

Dana Travis gained ground quickly as they came off the back straight and loomed up to challenge Irinka Gabby approaching the home turn.

Over the layer stages they staged a ding-dong struggle, with Irinka Gabby prevailing by a neck in 43.11.

ON A NIGHT where training honours were fairly evenly spread, Lorraine Roy was the only trainer to record two victories.

The first of the wins came when Octane Osti took out the Hotham Body Repairs Stake.

Cosmic Image, who drew the red alley, began very quickly and led Octane Osti in the early charge down the straight recording a slippery 5.36 first split.

Cosmic Image held the lead down the back, with Octane Osti rac-ing in the middle of the track but commencing a run, whilst Bomb Dis-posal was third on the rail.

Approaching the top turn, Octane Osti ranged up to join Cosmic Image, who was shortening stride, while Bomb Disposal was charging home along the paint.

Bomb Disposal momentarily run into a dead-end at that point and Oc-

tane Osti worked to the lead, gaining a vital break.

Octane Osti went to lead the line strongly, scoring by a length and a half in 30.36.

GARLETT provided the second leg of the Roy double in the Rapid-vite Stake after Garlett and Cool Re-jection had vied for the early lead down the straight the first time.

Garlett ultimately had too much pace for Cool Rejection heading into

the first turn and had crossed to lead clearly out of straight, where Cool Rejection lost his compass and headed to the outside of the track.

Banzai Keroma was then left to do the chasing, as the leader made a beeline for the major prize, shooting clear down the back straight.

Banzai Keroma turned in a good effort chasing, but Garlett proved too strong, scoring by a length in Best Of Night 30.29. - Ron Arnold

THAT FOUR LETTER WORD, “Rain” was in play again at Dapto last Wednesday night, and after one of the wettest summers in history, the dogs have become accustomed to racing on a sloppy surface. But the win by Murrumboola gave Craig Moffitt a victory over his boss, Andy Lord.

“Moff” has been the travelling foreman for the leading kennel over many years and only recently turned to the lead and collar caper for him-self by taking up the care of Murrum-boola. There was only a small field of six runners in the Lakeline Butchery Stake over 520 metres, in which Mur-rumboola and Pure As dominated the betting. When the lids opened, Pure As stood flat-footed from his rails draw, while Murrumboola in the check vest and Zuko Firebender in white were best served.

At the first corner Zuko Fire-bender stayed wide on the track, which gave a dream run to Murrum-boola, and once the son of Kiowa Sweet Trey found the lead he was always going to be hard to beat, as he’s been over the middle distance journey. Murrumboola broke clear of Pure As down the back with nothing else a chance.

The order was still the same ap-proaching the home bend, however, Pure As had cut back the margin to give his supporters some hope. In the straight though, Pure As raced wide, which allowed Murrum-boola to slip away, and he sped past the judge a one and three quarter lengths winner, with Oh Bailes in

third spot, a further five and a quarter lengths away. The time for the journey was 30.23 seconds and it was the winner’s third win at the dogdome. Murrumboola (x Token Whiz) recorded 30.23 to notch his third win at the Dogdome, whilst career-wise he’s had 16 career starts for four wins and six placings.

Pure As (Pure Octane x Curi Lee) to date has had 19 starts for three wins and seven placings, whilst Val McDonald’s Oh Bailes (Mister Twink x Indigo Flame) from 64 ca-reer starts has collected three wins and 24 placings.

JUST RECENTLY we men-tioned the frequent success of trainer, Christine Proctor, and the good for-tune continued when Ready To Shine led throughout in the opening race on the program. Competing in the United Tech-nology Services Stake over 520 me-tres, it was Ready To Shine that stepped straight to the front from box three and led from the yellow vested Richtofen on settling down and Little Olive was next. At the first corner there was plenty of hustle and bustle, which saw a few backmarkers put out of play, whilst Ready To Shine took full advantage and kicked clear into the back, with Richtofen the main threat. Coming down the side Ready To Shine started to draw right away as the immediate chaser, Richtofen started to struggle. With the race as good as over when heads were turned for home, Ready To Shine proved far too good, hitting the line five lengths ahead of Maldini Boy in 30.50, with Bazinga

third, a further two and three quarter lengths away. Ready To Shine, by Bombastic Shiraz out of Ready To Star, after three starts has recorded two wins.

Maldini Boy (Droopy’s Maldini x She’s Polished), trained by Caroline Psilos, has had 16 starts for a win and seven placings, whilst the James White trained third placegetter, Bazinga (Mister Twink x Miracle Tears) has raced 23 times for a win and six placings.

SHORT COURSE races are well supported at Dapto, and it was Chief Enforcer that stepped best to lead all the way over 297 metres in the Grey-hound Products Direct Stake. When the lids rose, Chief En-forcer was best out from box five and the son of Black Enforcer was able to hold the front at the all-important first bend, with Where’s Nathan and Highly Spirited just off the pace. Chief Enforcer always travelled well to the home turn and kicked fur-ther away.

With no challengers in sight, Chief Enforcer was far too good, de-feating Highly Spirited by two and a quarter lengths in 17.29, with Where’s Nathan a further three and there quarter lengths away third. Chief Enforcer (x Miss Penske), trained by Alan Miles, from 16 career starts has five wins and five placings.

Highly Spirited (Big Daddy Cool x Belle Lucille), trained by Jeff Sands, has produced two wins and eight placings from 32 career starts, whilst Shirley Davidson’s Where’s Nathan (Where’s Pedro x Estella Rose) has had three starts for one win and two placings. - Ron Arnold

WENTWORTH PARK’S MEETING featured three Preludes of the Golden Easter Egg, with the winners gaining direct entry into the final 80 grey-hounds for the upcoming series.

Stylish William took out the first Prelude, leading stylishly most of the way to score by a length a half in 30.47.

Blitz To Excel gave John Chap-man the first leg of a winning double when the son of Head Bound proved too strong for his rivals to score by a length in Best Of Night 30.22.

Wooden Ball took out the third Prelude, scoring by a half length in 30.33, giving Mark Ancliffe the sec-ond leg of a winning double.

Ancliffe also took out the Schweppes Stake with 25/1 shot, Yoit, who held on gamely in the straight to beat Take Over Fox in 30.46.

Not to be upstaged, Pauline Moran also chalked up two winners for the night.

IT WAS a great night out for the powerful Linda Britton kennel, as the state’s premier trainer put the polish on five winners, including four in a row. Uno Reltub kicked-started the quintet of winners with a narrow vic-tory over Surf A Coin in the Free To All over 530 metres.

The winner of 21 from 39 was sent out the $2.10 favourite, with last start winner, Rock Pool on the second line. The race went to script early on, with Uno Reltub blitzing the boxes to run a sizzling 5.63 opener to be three clear into the turn.

Reltub flew past the pen in 13.42 and was still five clear of What Size and Surf a Coin leaving the back. The favourite turned for home four lengths clear, with Surf a Coin unleashing a powerful burst but fail-ing by a head to catch the Britton chaser.

It was the 12th Cannington win for Uno Reltub, who has now amassed $88,000 in stakes. Seven heats of the rich Efficient Bricklaying Canning Trophy for fifth graders highlighted the card, with Linda Britton training four of those winners.

The most impressive being the inform Flying Machine, who drew the cherry for the $15,000 final this Sat-urday. The daughter of Collision and Casey's Angel exited box three as the even money favourite and hurtled to the paint. leading them out of the straight.

Onto the back section and the runner-up to Mepunga Geordie in the Perth Cup heats was two lengths clear of Lotza Talent, who was putting in the hard yards to lead the pack. The margin was the same off the back before the favourite extended her lead through the bend then ran out a six lengths winner over Travel Bug Miss in 30.54.

It was the eighth win from 16 outings for the November 2009 whelp, who will be favourite to take out the big cheque in the final. Former Victorian, Nino Field maintained his 100% winning record at Cannington by taking out the open-ing heat in 30.72 for Britton.

Mungo Park made it three in the Canning Trophy final, blitzing his opposition in 30.62, and Strapper’s Angel was impressive at her WA de-but, defeating De Wade in 30.67.

The former Tasmanian is owned by former Australian cricket captain, Ricky Ponting. The other heat winners were Bautista for Paul Stuart in 30.80 and Graham Berry’s Smiley Assassin in 30.62.

IT WAS a huge night out for Forrest-dale trainer, Brad Yates on Saturday, landing his first grade city winner then later on notched his first city double. The former Queenslander has been making steady progress with the set up of his establishment since moving West.

He now has 12 dogs in work, either owned by his family or leading

WA breeder, Dan Biddle. On Saturday it was one of

Biddle’s breed, who made the city break through in Free To All com-pany over the staying trip. Kalden Abubo is a half-sister to top liners Pillow Torque and Kalden Athena, and looks to have inherited the stay-ing genes.

Yates told us, “She is probably the best greyhound in the kennel and continues to improve with racing.” Punters risked the Yates’ chaser

at $13, with McQueen sent out the odds-on elect. Kalden Abubo jumped fairly and settled second to be eight lengths off the pacy Arrigato with a circuit to travel. The gap had been re-duced to six lengths passing the release point, with Kal-den Abubo second and Free-way Fame making up ground now third. The lamplighter was treading water for home and Kalden Abubo closed rap-idly on the rail to join her before finishing the race out solidly, holding Freeway Fame at bay by two lengths. It was the fourth attempt over the distance for Kalden Abubo (Surf Lorian - Ab-badale Gold), who shaved eight lengths off her PB to win in 42.23. and Thai Again broke a run of 20 outs to salute by five lengths over strong performers Where's He Shall and How Goods That in a PB of 30.60. “We bought him a little while back and he is a good honest chaser who has done well under our training style,” said Brad Yates.

Patch Monelli should get a chance to utilise his early speed from box two in the final, which should make him a strong trifecta chance.

In what was a memorable week-end for Yates, he also has Braga Chase in Kanyana Cup final at Man-durah on Friday after a solid second to Military Power in the heats.

Quite significant FIVE HEATS of the time honoured Kanyana Cup for provincial fifth graders were conducted at Mandurah on Friday night, with some handy youngsters booking a place in the $5,275 final. The most impressive of the night was the Linda Britton trained, Rich-ard Humphries owned Significant Bit.

The $2.40 favourite jumped cleanly from the inside and pushed up strongly to hold out the early chal-lengers.

After breaking clear by a couple of lengths along the back straight he maintained the advsantage, holding Western Heart at bay to salute in a race record time of 27.64. It was the second win from five starts for the WA bred daughter of Bit Chili and good producer, Swift Sphinx.

She has a tough road to glory in the final, drawing box seven in a field with abundant early speed. Man Dime made it seven wins from eight outings to book his place in the final.

The Sean Kavanagh trained youngster worked hard early in the pink vest before crossing the to the fence in the back straight.

The $1.80 favourite coasted home a two lengths winner in a fair 27.94. Glen Debski’s promising young-ster, High Impulse won a head-bobber over Marie Monelli in 27.90.

Sent out the at $1.60, the son of Where's Pedro and Real Macoy ran sizzling opening sections before tir-ing in the run home.

The winner of four from five starts has drawn awkwardly in box six. Ruby’s A Dreama ($7.40) caused a minor upset by taking out the fourth heat in 27.94.

The Kylie McLennan trained bitch did everything right early and ran solid sectionals before weakening for home then fending-off Silver Pil-low by a length. The Paul Stuart trained Military Power brought his good city form to Mandurah, recording a three lengths win in 27.76 on his provincial track debut.

He has drawn the inside for the final and looms as the dog to beat, providing his 39kg frame is not squeezed early on at the ‘bend’ start by the fast beginners out wide.

Group 1 littermates THE AUSTRALIAN CUP saw yet another pair of littermates make a Group 1 Final.

Audacious Elle and Soda Boy both qualified for the $175,000 to the winner event but then had no luck on their side when they drew next to each other in the middle of the field.

They are from a December 2009 litter by champion sire, Bombastic Shiraz from Pure Elle.

She’s a daughter of Pure Octane and Ikari Lee, and that matron is by Brett Lee from Grigorieva.

Does that breeding look familiar? Well, Sensation Lee is Ikari Lee’s

litter sister, and to Bombastic Shiraz she produced Group 1 winners Lochinvar Marlow and Godsend.

When it comes to brood bitches, Pure Elle has the absolute best of the best, as her two grand sires are two of Australia’s greatest stud dogs, Token Prince and Brett Lee, whilst her two grand dams can also lay claim to being two of our best, Elusive Rebel and Grigorieva.

Throw Bombastic Shiraz in to the line and you can see why Audacious Elle and Soda Boy should qualify for one of Aus-tralia’s best races.

And both of these gallopers have great strike rates on the track and overall.

Audacious Elle has won three of four at the trip, as part of 11 of 21 overall, whilst Soda Boy has won 12 of his 20 outings, with a four from six on the track. Not eliminated AUDACIOUS ELLE came through the elimination heats of the Australian Cup to make the final of the Group 1 event. On top of that, second reserve, Laco-mare also contested the elimination heats, and as there were only seven of those, the dog that was the fastest sec-ond was also going to qualify, and Laco-mare was that dog.

As it turned out, he finished second to Audacious Elle in the heats, going under by a length in 29.82 and proving just how lucky or unlucky you can be, as his time would have won three of the other heats.

Just diversifying, the first reserve in

the final Allen Hertz would have taken out five of the heats, based on his over the line time of 29.81 for running second. But back to Audacious Elle, and it was only just over two months ago that she was running in non-penalty races, having scored over 525 metres at The Meadows but very impressively though, in 30.08 Best Of Day.

It highlights the fickle fortunes of racing, whereby you can be racing in low-end meets “one day” and in top grade races the “next”.

And it still proves that thing I keep saying, you can’t win these races if you’re not in them. Kiwi visitors I WAS HAVING a real good think about just how many New Zealand chasers have been successful over here in Aus-tralia, and at the highest level.

Kwik Metal very quickly comes to mind, as she had won at Awatea and Aukland in New Zealand before coming over here.

She won first-up at Warragul and then won two at Wangaratta.

Hitting peak form, she rattled off the “picket fence”, six wins in a row.

She won three of those at Olympic Park then scored at Shepparton, Warra-gul and Sandown.

She was then beaten a head by Temlee at Olympic Park in the Sprint Championship.

Of course, trained by Cap Abbott, she then went on to win the 1974 Mel-bourne Cup, beating Miss Alliance and Flash Gordon.

According to Greyhound Data, she was “born in Australia”, a daughter of imported Gabriel Mist and Metal Joey.

The second dog that I thought of was Raurimu, who came over here and won a swag of top class staying races under the care of Kerry Chalker.

She was a daughter of Doctor Banks and Lara Hobbs whelped in June 1981 and nearly represented Victoria in the National Distance Championship after just losing the State Final to Tashla.

Of course, she landed a Sandown Cup and even ventured to the Gabba and scored over the gruelling 704 metres on the odd-shaped track, just to prove her versatility.

Then there was Waiwera Marika, who won the 1998 St. Leger (now Paws Of Thunder) at Wentworth Park.

She was a July 1996 daughter of Noble Talent and Lemon Pearl.

The brindle chaser was trained here by Harry Hampson, and according to her form, she won her first 14 starts on the trot.

So there you go, three Kiwis that came here and won Group 1’s.

Tron time DYNA TRON showed his class by bounc-ing back to his brilliant best in a heat of the Australian Cup, scoring in the equal Best Of Night 29.75. Mind you, he wasn’t really racing poorly or anything, just not enjoying the best of luck competing at the highest level.

As I keep saying, they’re not ma-chines.

It’s been quite an amazing run by Dyna Tron, who really blossomed after winning the Group 2 Geelong Cup last year.

He went on to take out the Group 1 Melbourne Cup, ran second in the Group 1 Brisbane Cup and then scored in the Group 1 Hobart Thousand.

At the time of writing he’s on $433,518, and by the time this appears you’ll know whether he’s added the Aus-tralian Cup to his collection.

And of course, if he has, he’ll have become only the second greyhound in our history to have won more than $600,000 in stakes.

I suppose there’s a bit of quirkiness there if that happens, as the other dog to do that is High Earner, and he is by the same sire as Dyna Tron… and that’s Collision. There’s a saying THERE’S an old saying that top trainers train the winners of the top races. Some might say that once you win a top race you automatically become re-garded as a top trainer. No siree, not always.

The Australian Cup is a great race to look at, as many of the country’s best trainers have prepared the winner of this event.

However, there have been several people that never kicked on as trainers, although some never tried to.

They were happiest training a couple out of the backyard.

A few of the people that won Austra-lian Cups dropped or just faded out of the game, for reasons unknown in most cases.

Although I did hear that one bloke who won it figured he could never exceed winning Australia’s best race and decided to rest on his laurels.

As far as he was concerned, he’d climbed his “Everest”, and there was no higher mountain than that to climb.

But for some people who trained the winners of this race, it helped kick-start a long involvement in greyhound racing.

So here is a question, in these mod-ern times can a battler or a hobbyist win an Australian Cup?

History will show you that the last 13 names on the Honour Roll were all trained by full-time trainers.

So does being full-time help contrib-ute to being a top trainer?

For some, yes; for others, no. I had 17 dogs to look after on my

own at one point of my training career and I lamented the fact that I never had anywhere near the success I had when I limited myself to just six dogs.

Mind you, when I had just six I al-ways had plenty prepared to give me a hand if I needed it.

Pity I couldn’t find those same people when I had too many.

Ah, the Australian Cup, that was the race that I wanted to win when I first started out.

Twice, my best chance of ever win-ning one came unstuck when I bumped into the winner of the final in the semis.

Still, it was great to be competitive in such a race, and for many the thrill of a lifetime has been just getting into the final.

For others, it’s just another day at “the office”. Only two SADLY, despite there being $75,000 up for grabs, the Group 1 Australian Stayers Cup only attracted enough dogs for two heats. Well, there must have been 17 en-tries, as there was the same reserve for both heats. But champion half-miler, Miata was scratched, which allowed that reserve to gain a start, so I’ll leave the “sore point” alone in this instance. I do wonder if the prospect of Miata competing was the reason the entry count was down.

I had a quick squiz around and no-ticed at least a dozen more dogs that could have had a crack at that race.

Even if you thought Miata had a mortgage on the race, the heats were worth $5250, $1640 and $750, and Miata can’t win all the heats, or claim the prizemoney for the placings for that mat-ter.

And as for the final, even if you thought the champion West Aussie could not lose, what’s wrong with $22,000 or $11,000, the money for running second and third?

What, are you so well off you can turn your nose up at that amount of money?

In hindsight, don’t you wish you’d entered? Wettish WE’VE certainly had a bit of rain in a few places around the country.

Down where I am, I’ve been thinking it must be a desert, as the rain just would-n’t come.

Seems it rained everywhere else bar here.

I was going to try the sure-fire way of making it rain, wash the car.

But being on tanks, you need water to do that, and no rain, no water.

The second method is to fire up the “Barbie”, but with everything so dry, with my luck I’d set fire to the district, so that was out.

The house is clad, so saying I’m go-ing to paint the outside to force the rain to come was futile.

I did the only thing left… I bought a load of water, and sure enough, down came the rain.

I hadn’t heard of any meetings being cancelled, but with more rain on its way, and flooding in parts, I guess that’s a possibility.

I see towns like Cowra, Goulburn, Cooma, Queanbeyan and Cootamundra in NSW had flooding and evacuations, so to all those people all I can say is please stay safe. Good luck to you MANY YEARS ago I had a little publish-ing business, and as I was always on the look out for something interesting to put into book form, I started chasing up things associated with good luck.

It’s quite funny, because I did man-age to find out a few more than interest-ing things.

Basically, luck is just a term we use to describe certain circumstances, be they good or bad.

It’s more a state of mind within the realms of objects bringing good luck or causing bad luck.

But having said that, I actually won-

dered if objects could really bring good luck; things like a rabbit’s foot.

Those that believed them to be lucky probably attributed any success they had to it.

Bit like the “Linus and his blanket” syndrome.

However, maybe it all isn’t a state of mind.

I actually found some proof that the Lodestone brought good luck.

That basically is a magnetised rock. One of the great things about the

Internet is all this information is at your fingertips.

When I was trying to research it, I needed a Library Card and a Library, and then had the prospect of spending hours and hours trying to find things and hoping that if there were books on the subject, the library actually had them.

Anyhow, magnets are supposed to bring good luck, and you’re supposed to carry them in a charm bag with other lucky stones.

Also, knowing the chants or spells that go with them helps too.

I actually heard that wearing jewel-lery that was magnetic was lucky, as long as the magnet was touching your skin.

Anyhow, just Google it. And may the next dog you back that

wins be 33/1 or longer. Your Say “St. Pierre” remarked, “Miata has as much chance of breaking The Meadows record as I have of flying to the moon.”

“Nellie’s record will never be bro-ken... and she ain’t one of my favourite dogs.” Well, I think some day the record may go, but I don’t think it’ll be soon, that’s for sure. I rate Nellie Noodles as the modern day Bunyip Bint, and that is, when they were on song there wasn’t a dog in the world could get near them. “Fell Over” stated, “I saw a dog fall near the line in a race at Horsham once and I thought the dog had run fourth but it was-n’t awarded that place (I think).”

“But according to the rules, the plac-ings are adjudged on the dog’s nose, and I would think that as long as the dog crossed the line with his nose, he should be deemed that place.” I agree! “Clever Fella” said, “I was going to throw my thoughts towards the three ‘By Invita-tion Only’ races, but I got side-tracked.”

“Anyway, Dyna Tron and Thrilling Brat for the two big ones on Saturday night.” Duly noted. “Wise Man” with, “Sadly today’s younger people are missing out on something great, the way being on-course used to be.”

“I always said it was a great way to get an education.” So true, we were spoilt when young with what being on a track taught us. I excelled at mental arithmetic, which came about from calculating odds (no calculators back then) and you looked like an idiot if you needed a pencil and a piece of paper to do it. “Grateful Reader” emailed, “Thanks Tree Dweller for the advice.” You’re more than welcome. “Funny Man” quipped, “Yes, I’ve seen similar with people on treadmills, their only mistake was hitting the ‘on’ button and they were off (the back).”

“Sure looked funny.” Yes, I know we shouldn’t laugh, but why don’t we ever have the video re-corder in our hands when this hap-pens? Bandaging legs It has been stated that if a dog needs a bandage on its leg it should not be fit to race.

However, this misses the point completely as most bandages are applied as a preventative and protective measure.

All young greyhounds will greatly benefit from the use of bandages applied to wrists and even hocks. The common sites where we apply bandages are: The wrists: Two inch Elastoplast is commonly applied to the metacarpals of younger dogs, between breaking in and two years old.

This stiffer bandage gives support to all four metacarpals and allows them to function as a unit, rather than the total force of the bend being applied either the outside metacarpal on the left front, or the inside metacarpal on the right front.

I am a strong advocate of the Elastoplast-type bandages that give a limited amount of stretch, which is lesser than the breaking stretch of ligaments and tendons, and they do provide greater support to the lower limbs.

Flexible bandages, usually the colourful stretch-wrap brands, stretch much further than the breaking point of ligaments and tendons, and do not inhibit the movement of the joint.

They give some very limited support to the wrist bones and their attached ligaments and tendons, and are of dubious benefit to a greyhound. The hocks: On the hock joint we can apply firm supporting bandages on the lower portion of the joint away from the main hinge region.

This is indicated after ligament or bone damage to the joint.

Bandages of the metatarsals help prevent juvenile bone injuries.

These are not as common as metacarpal fractures, however, it should have no effect on a dog’s performance to apply any type of supporting bandage Toes: Often dislocated toes, once settled, have little pain or inflammation, however, they are prone to further dislocations.

This is particularly true of the top toe joint.

Support for the top toe joint involves applying two inch tape from the middle of the back of the foot twice around the dislocated toe firmly to hold the toe in position.

The bottom of the tape should run along the top of the main foot pad.

Lower dislocations, or ‘sprung toes’, can be restrained by the application of one or half inch tape around the joint… hopefully trying to bind the toe to its neighbours.

Elastic bands or even sections of bicycle tube can be used in place of tape.

Greyhounds with inflamed nail beds can have the area protected with a sliver of tape applied around the nail and then heated with a hair drier to encourage a strong adherence to the toe nail.

The heat improves the ‘stickability’ of the tape, as anyone who has left a roll in the front of the car would know. Track leg bandages: For some dogs there are incurable or chronic reasons why a greyhound hits a track leg.

These dogs require a protective bandage, often with a small square of shock-absorbing sponge or rubber underneath (the insoles of shoes or old wet suits are very good options).

This is usually two or three inch Elastoplast.

Most other materials slip from the trauma site during the race.

Kerry Oki on song West Palm Beach, Fl. - Pat Collins/Neola Joe Kennel's JS Kerry Oki handily defeated a top-notch field to win Satur-day afternoon's running of the $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby.

Wearing her favorite color of red and starting from the number one post position, Kerry Oki broke well then rushed her way to the early lead and to the $25,000 first place prize.

Going off as the race favorite, JS Kerry Oki won by two lengths in a 660-yard Pat C Rendezvous Course, clock-ing of 37.99 seconds and returning $5.40 to her many happy supporters.

Atasocita Tana, BM Murphy and ADZ finished second, third and fourth respectively.

This was the first time in recent - and perhaps all-time - Derby history that all the finalists were females.

Love is in the air HARRY MARKOU, who gave up a successful bookmaking career to become a greyhound breeder, holds the whip hand in the semi-finals of the Summer Puppy Classic at Nowra.

Markou bred and owns fastest heat winner, Classy Love, who posted a near-record 29.55 for Bargo trainer, Andrew Bayliss.

He also races that greyhound’s brother, Mark Of Love, who won in a slick 30.14 for Austral condi-tioner, Jason Magri.

Classy Love had box one when she led throughout to win her heat by 14 lengths in only .07 outside of More Space’s course record.

And Mark Of Love’s perform-ance was as impressive.

After bungling the start and be-ing checked at the first turn, he came from a distant fourth with 250 metres to run to win by 12 lengths.

His trainer, Jason Magri said, “Mark Of Love is capable of run-ning 29.70 if he nails the start.”

“He has been missing it but has a big motor.”

“But Andrew has Classy Love jumping smartly and that is a big advantage.”

Markou’s star juveniles are by Collision from Friendly Love, whose first litter included Magri’s Wentworth Park winner, Platinum Love.

********** COSMIC IMAGE, a daughter of a give-away brood bitch, has become

the first Wentworth Park winning offspring of 2008 NSW Greyhound Of The Year, Miagi.

Showing brilliant early speed, Cosmic image led throughout for an easy win in a smart 30.32 recently.

Trained by Norm Becroft for Edna and Ron Crawford, Cosmic Image has now had a win and three placings from six Wenty Park starts.

After last week’s race a jubilant Ron Crawford said, “Kon Kola, the well known owner breeder, is a long-time friend and he gave us Closing Conquest, Cosmic Image’s dam.

“We became enthusiastic about greyhounds through attending meet-ings with the late John White and his wife, Judy, when their crack stayer, Farrarami was racing 16 years ago.”

Wyee trainer, Jill Harper, who trained Miagi, was as thrilled as the Crawfords with Cosmic Image’s win.

“Miagi has only served 20 bitches, but also sired two winners at The Meadows last week,” Jill said. “But there’s no doubt he would prefer be racing.”

“Whenever Miagi sees me decked-out in white shirt and black trousers, required dress code for trainers on raceday, he gets excited, thinking he is heading to the track.”

FOR MANY people involved with owning and training greyhounds, it’s a hobby. With hobbies, be it playing golf, own-ing a boat or virtually anything, there is a cost involved.

So too with greyhounds. The difference with greyhounds is that they can offer you a return, albeit winning $299 at Ipswich on a Saturday afternoon, $858 at Ipswich or Albion Park Class 3 meetings or $1,248 at a Class 2 card, it’s more than a boat or a golf club membership will pay you in cold, hard cash! By the way, those amounts are for winning prizemoney.

The reason why they are not rounded-off figures is that winning prizemoney in Queensland nowadays is a set percentage of the total prizemoney for any given race. Don’t ask me why a dollar or two or three can’t be added to those unusual amounts to even them off, as I have not been able to get a sensible answer to that question.

It’s something to do with computers, apparently. Win a race at Albion Park on a Thurs-day and $3,198 jumps in... $3,200 would sound better, but $3,198 it is.

Your boat or golf club definitely can’t match that, although you may put more than a monetary value on the pleasure derived from those activities.

At the other end of the scale to those amounts are greyhound races worth six-figure amounts. The Australian record prizemoney earner is currently $610,070 by Queen-sland owned and bred High Earner. People racing at Ipswich for $299 on a Saturday afternoon will be thinking… I’ll never get a dog as good as High Earner,

or anything like him. But racing is all about dreams. And do you know where High Earner

won his Maiden? It was at Ipswich in 2009, when

trained by David Robartson of Churchable. Fill-in role IPSWICH Saturday non-TAB meetings now start at 12.30pm. The club has been getting plenty of nominations for 431 metres and to a lesser extent, 520 metres events.

It plans to run some 288 metres races from next Saturday.

After viewing a few 288 metres field trials recently, stewards have insisted that some padding be installed on the outside fence at the first turn as a safety precau-tion, should inexperienced runners strug-gle with the first turn.

The Ipswich meetings are replacing Capalaba, which is flood damaged.

Most agree that running 366 metres on the Capalaba straight course is a pretty testing run.

After all, there are no bends on which the runners can ease.

Ipswich club has been told 288 me-tres events will be graded from the top down.

In other words, a Free For All (1st – 2nd – 3rd Grades combined) would go on the program ahead of a Fifth Grade.

I know there are TAB venues in New

South Wales and Victoria that conduct races of less than 300 metres.

But I just hope introducing them to the Ipswich non-TAB cards doesn’t ex-tend to them creeping into our TAB meet-ings.

From a racecaller’s viewpoint, the ‘’blink and miss’ affairs are, to be blunt, buggers to call.

It’s almost impossible to describe what’s happening and where runners are positioned, not only because the races are over in about 17.00, but they tend to sprawl left, right and centre at the first turn.

But my aversion to them is the safety factor.

If the stewards want extra padding at the first turn, doesn’t that tell you some-thing? Food for thought HERE’S a coincidence.

Trainers Alec Stevens and Geoff Allen both have runners in this Thursday night’s Brandon’s Electrical Queensland Derby final at Albion Park. I asked Allen if he has had a Queen-sland Derby runner before, and he re-called Hanson Supreme running second to subsequent Melbourne Cup winner, Roanokee in 1997. “And I had Hanson Ned unplaced, but I can’t remember what year that was,” Allen said. Well, I’ve done a wee bit of research and found that Hanson Ned finished sixth in the 1996 Derby.

And who was the winner that year? None other than Fear No Judge,

trained by Alec Stevens. Consider this Find more reasons to smile in a day than frown.

ZIPPING LAD has won the 2011 Betfair NSW Greyhound Of The Year at a gala event at the Sydney Hilton. The victory gives trainer Jason Mackay his third coveted NSW Greyhound of the Year award having trained previous winners Texas Gold (2005) and Big Sam Banner (2002). Zipping Lad tipped out the two other nominees He Knows Uno and Oaks Road for the major honour. Mackay was on hand to accept the award along with Zipping Lad’s owners and breeders Martin and Fiona Hallinan, from Orange. Based at Mackay’s kennels in

Richmond Vale on the NSW Central Coast, Zipping Lad only had his first career start in April 2011. However, he soon earned the nickname ‘Super Stayer’ after he put together six wins in a row over 600 metres, including a fantastic come from behind victory in the NSW Distance Championship at Wentworth Park in August. Zipping Lad then contested the Group 1 National Distance Championship at Albion Park before returning to Wentworth Park in October where he came second in the Group 3 Sydney Cup. After taking part in the final of the Group 1 Bold Trease Cup at Sandown, Zipping Lad was finally rewarded for his terrific form with a brilliant win in the Group 3 Summer Cup in December. He then returned to Victoria in the last week of the year where he just missed out on winning the Group 1 Sale Cup, finishing second. If his success at group level was not enough, Zipping Lad also broke the 618 metre track record at Richmond and the 715 metre record at The Gardens. He Knows Uno did not leave empty handed, with the flying finisher taking

home the Run Of The Year award for his brilliant win in a semi final of the Golden Easter Egg. In other major awards to be announced on the night, former long serving Casino Greyhound Club secretary Don Waldron was handed the Allen Wheeler Medal for lifetime achievement. Waldron was club secretary between 1964 and 2004 and was also in charge of earbranding and marking up of greyhounds in the Northern Rivers region. Fancy Dean, co-owned by Australian Soccer player Tim Cahill, was rewarded for a terrific year by winning the Sprinter of the Year award. Andy Lord won the Virbac Animal Health Trainer of the Year title. The Cawdor mentor enjoyed another successful year right across the state with his talented team. NSW bred DYNA TRON’S success in taking out the 2011 Victorian Greyhound Of The Year title has seen the Two Blues state responsible for six of our past dozen winners of our most prestigious award.

That’s 50% of our prized VGOTY award winners being bred outside the boundaries of Victoria.

I bet their breeders are celebrat-ing, as I reckon our breeders don’t have anywhere near those type of

numbers when it comes to research-ing the breeders responsible for NSW GOTY awards.

Dyna Tron, Cindeen Shelby, Pure Octane, Whisky Assassin, Osti’s

Joker and Kantarn Bale were NSW bred greyhounds, whilst El Grand Senor, Flashing Floods, Betty’s An-gel, Bombastic Shiraz, Carlisle Jack and Brett Lee were all Victorian bred.

A line ball, but the figures don’t reflect a good look for our breeding lines.

The past twelve NSW GOTY winners were: Elite Blue Size, Take The Kitty, Miagi, Slater, Royal Rid-dle, Texas Gold, Irinka Barbie, Kumta Chase, Big Sam Banner, Pearl Larricki, Go Wild Teddy and Faithful Hawk.

Not too many of those elite chas-ers would have been bred down south.

Convoy TEAM DAILLY’S massive canine transporter certainly came in handy at the recent Ballarat qualifying trials on Sunday, January 29.

In what was an ominous warning for the Morshead Park locals, as the Anakie mob produced 25 youngsters who participated in 11 Maiden trials under the famous Allen, Bale and Dyna signatures.

Abdon Bale, Aimey Bale, Allen Darwin, Haylee Allen, Dyna Bonie, Hannie Bale, Cacia Bale, Garrick Bale and Eirene Bale were all suc-cessful in their 450 metres debut.

They virtually cleaned up, win-ning nine of the 13 heats conducted.

Congratulations to Mahogany Spirit, Runaway Ricky, Claretown Jay and Simonova, who thwarted the big kennel from a clean sweep.

The run continues OTL mentioned recently of the good run of luck experienced by the Pre-mier Fantasy and Pearlee Surprise litter.

Well, littermates Beautiful Noise, Carlow Queen, Tania Two Shoes and Lever Footprint just keep winning.

Tania Two Shoes notched a hat-trick of wins with a flying 21.91 vic-tory at Shepparton, whilst Beautiful Noise and Lever Footprint contrib-uted to the litter tally with doubles.

Carlow Queen, who has the big-gest profile of the honest quartet, de-livered a runaway all the way win over the Shepparton 650 metres trip.

To date, the litter has accumu-lated 39 wins, with plenty more to come.

Makes you want to stand in a queue for dam Pearlee Surprise’s third litter, this time to Collision.

sion is a black son of Carnage and Camilla Bale, and I wonder if there is connection between the similarly named chasers.

Numbers to die for PERTH Cup night saw nearly 5,000 patrons attend Cannington’s night of nights.

On-course turnover was $212K, whilst the Sandgropers ploughed $479K off-course.

No wonder they’re referred to as the “State Of Excitement”.

Would you believe it happened again THEY’RE a tough and resilient mob in Tasmania, particularly at Devon-port.

You would think that trainers have had enough of the continuing saga of the lure problems that have jinxed the club over the past 12 months.

But still the lure problems persist, with the February 14 meeting having to resort to back logging after the second race encountered mechanical failure with the lure during the stir-ups.

“Subsequently all races were put back one race, with Race 2 commenc-ing at 1.48 whilst the last, the 11th, started at 4.26pm”.

Thankfully the remaining races were incident-free, except that stew-ards had to reprimand a trainer for allowing a greyhound to escape from his trailer and enter the parking area.

Never a dull moment on Tasma-nian tracks.

Maybe that’s the reason why Tas-wegians are often asked “tongue in cheek”, why do they have two heads?

One for their sanity and the other for bashing it against a brick wall in frustration when continually con-fronted with recurring problems that have been ongoing down south for far too long.

Pretty close GOOD fast win handed in by Double Jeopardy at Ballarat’s Morshead Park on February 15.

The honest half-miler, owned by Joanne Maschmedt and trained by Jeff Britton, was coming off an easy 680 metres victory at Beckley Park three nights earlier.

A natural front runner, who scored twice at Sandown Park during December in 34.33 and 42.27, is also classified as an honest chaser, who to date has won 10 of his 40 career out-ings.

His Ballarat victory, just under a length from Breathe Fear, was clocked officially at 37.69, just .05 outside Granduer’s 650 metres track record.

Now that’s a pretty hot run, but NGF’s respected and well qualified Ballarat form analyst has serious con-cerns about the time.

Double Jeopardy is credited as registering a very, very moderate 18.65 split, and strangely the timer didn’t come up with any other sec-tionals.

Makes you wonder whether the time is okay, but one thing is for sure, the split is wrong, horribly wrong.

One year I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift.

The next year I didn’t buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, “Well, you still

haven’t used the gift I bought you last year.”

The sport continues to spike, and its growing popularity was highlighted in The Meadows car park on Temlee night. Parked down near the TV van was a shiny red Masserati. Had a chuckle with the registration plate, “Broke”. Hope it didn’t reflect the driver’s punting prowess. Also in the trainers area was a new silver Mercedes SUV towing a four berth trailer. A sign of the times maybe, and with an impending massive prizemoney boost on the way, can we expect to see more flash cars in the car parks.

Radley Bale almost fell in the early part of the race but he picked himself up and in his usual hard chasing style kept coming, getting up to win in the shadows of the post.

AGRA’s Greyhound of the Month for February 2012 is brilliant Western

Australian stayer Miata. In February the talented Miata was undefeated winning her only two starts but what a couple of starts they were. The Group 1 Galaxy in

Perth and the Group 2 Zoom Top at The Meadows.

FYNA BALE, who was only a reserve for the Macro Meats Grade 5 Final over 595 metres, gained a start and finished best to score in Best Of Night 34.34.

After lining up in box six at $19.80, the daughter of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale was only fairly away but drove through to be third into the first bend.

Elmira Bale led down to the first checkpoint in 9.20 with a length lead over Take Me Home, while there was two lengths to Fyna Bale sitting in third spot.

Elmira Bale was still the lamplighter around to the back, passing through in 23.35 with just over a length lead on Fyna Bale, who was now second after coming around the outside of Take Me Home.

Fyna Bale continued her forward push to get alongside the leader on the last corner, but it wasn’t until the last few metres that she got the upper hand, scor-ing by three quarters of a length over Elmira Bale ($3.30), with Marked Down ($5.70) a length back in third spot.

Fyna Bale has now won six of her 27 starts, whilst on the track at the trip this

was her first win at just her second go. The black chaser was the second leg

of a winning double for owner, Paul Wheeler and trainer, Andrea Dailly. Diminutive flyer DIMINUTIVE Hannie Bale was the first leg for Paul and Andrea, and she flew over the 515 metres in Best Of Night 29.39 when an all the way winner of the Bring Your Club To Sandown Grade 5.

Drawn in box seven as favourite at $2.40, the daughter of Go Wild Teddy and Dyna Celeste came out running and sped down to the first mark in 5.03 with a four lengths lead over Wild Lucy, while Maggie’s Mirth occupied third possie.

Hannie Bale had the speed on around to the far corner, passing by in a slick 18.73 with a four lengths break over Wild Lucy, and they had six lengths to Kayo Marciarno getting to third past Queen Selene.

Despite her lead being reduced, Han-nie Bale maintained her momentum and held out Wild Lucy ($2.90) in the drive to the line, scoring by a length and three quarters, with Kayo Marciarno ($15.60) four and three quarter lengths further astern.

Hannie Bale has now started five times with this being her fourth career win, and it was her first victory at her second try at the trip. Very close finish IN WHAT turned out to be a very close four-way finish, Kiltanon Skye got the verdict in a photao in the RSN Grade 5 over 595 metres.

After lining up in box six at $3.70, the Martina Whelan trained chaser was away fairly and back fifth turning into the straight the first time, where Laurie Valen-tine had the lead.

And it was Laurie Valentine that led them down to the first mark in 9.27 with nearly three lengths on Dr. Rochelle and Don’s Miss was third, while Kiltanon Skye back sixth and wide.

Laurie Valentine held sway at the back corner in 23.60 with two lengths on Dr. Rochelle and two lengths again to Scarlet Maid, while Kiltanon Skye was coming through on the inside, two lengths back fourth.

Laurie Valentine led into the straight but Scarlet Maid was railing through, with Dr. Rochelle three out and third, whilst Kiltanon Sky had hooked to the outside and was still fourth.

Kiltanon Sky finished with a wet sail down the outside, arriving in time to beat Scarlet Maid ($3.70) by a nose, with a neck to third placed Laurie Valentine ($16.80) and a further neck to Dr. Ro-chelle fourth.

Kiltanon Skye returned 34.86 to reg-ister his first win at his second try at the trip.

Owned by the Kiltanon Syndicate, Kiltanon Skye. a son of Where’s Pedro and Sum Chance. has scored in seven of his 20 outings. Ballerina dances SPIRAL BALLERINA scored an impres-sive all the way win in the Rapidvite Stop Cough Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 515 me-tres.

Wearing the red vest at $3.80, the daughter of Collision and Spiral Rose came out running and in a keen contest, led by three quarters of a length over Kansas Turnpike and Wongawilli Wala in 5.12 at the first peg.

Spiral Ballerina put the foot down turning out of the straight and scooted away to go through the second check-point in 18.84 with a four lengths lead over Kansas Turnpike and there was just over two lengths to Daintree Rocket get-ting to third.

Spiral Ballerina was untroubled in the run home, scoring by five and three quar-ter lengths over Kansas Turnpike ($3.40 fav), with Mepunga Melachi ($8.00) a neck away third.

Spiral Ballerina returned 29.58 to make it three wins in four goes at the trip, and three wins in seven goes overall.

The black chaser is trained at Cran-bourne by Jim Redenbach for David Baker.

Hannie Bale looks destined to step up to the elite class of city racing after her sizzling 29.33 victory last week. Raced by Paul Wheeler, trained by ‘Team Dailly’ and handled by Ray Drake, the 23 months old youngster had already put the writing on the wall with a sensational 25.14 Grade 5 win at Ballarat’s Morshead Park on February 22. Stopping the clock at 29.58, the daughter of Collision and Spiral Rose already has a 29.48 PB for the trip and has a very bright future.

Vee Ate Mate, raced and trained by successful studmaster, Engin Gemci, scored a runaway victory in 29.58. A sleek blue son of Talk’s Cheap and Lil’ Bit Cool, the handy sprinter has now won 11 of his 25 starts.

Kiltanon Skye had been performing well on his home track at Warrnamboo,l and despite the rise in class, gave a good account of himself in pinching a last stride win in a blanket finish over the 595 metres trip. Just under three lengths separated the first five placings in the Grade 5 event, which was completed in 34.86. Domiciled at Martina Whelan’s Penshurst kennels, the son of Where’s Pedro and Sum Chance has now won seven of his 20 career starts.

MOGAMBO (Where’s Pedro x Zarbo) sired a litter of five dogs and six bitches from Token Breeze whelped November 1 that was registered by Julie Grindley, Manager of the Marlie Syndicate.

Token Breeze is a daughter of Token Prince and Opporchancity, who won nine of her 71 starts, securing three victories at Warragul over 424 metres with 24.24 her best, as well as scoring twice over 513 metres at Traralgon with a PB of 30.19.

She won twice at Sandown over 515 metres with 30.30 her best, was success-ful over 525 metres at The Meadows in 30.33 and scored over the 520 metres at Cranbourne in 31.02.

The other members of her litter were Major Danjer (6 wins), Miss Grindles (2 wins), One More Chance (2 wins) and Who’s Girl (6 wins).

The dam was a smart chaser from a good line, suggesting that these young-sters should make their presence felt on the track. Dallas Gypsy, a daughter of EJ’s Douglas and Advert, scored in three of her 17 goes, winning at Sandown over 515 metres in 30.41 and over 520 metres at Cranbourne in 30.84, as well as win-ning over 600 metres at The Meadows in 35.38.

Mozza too slick Ballarat February 28 MOZZA was too slick for his rivals in the 390 metres Special Event on Tuesday night, scor-ing in the new PB and BON time of 22.06.

Drawn in box seven as favourite at $2.10, the Derryn Harrison trained sprinter scored by two and a quarter lengths over Miss Trew Star ($5.20), with Plankton ($7.70) two and a half lengths back in third spot.

Mozza, who’s won 20 of his 50 starts, is a son of Primo Uno and Winsome Minnie, owned by the Salvo Syndicate. Deimos scored a comfortable win in the 650 metres Special Event.

Rated at $7.70 out of box seven, the daughter of Token Prince and Itsa Kinda Magic defeated Loose Bolts ($2.50) by four and a half lengths, with Sunraysia Lad ($2.10 fav) collect-ing third money, two and a quarter lengths back.

Deimos, owned and trained by Bruce Loft, posted 38.13 to make it five wins in 27 starts. There was a dead heat for first in heat four of the Restricted Win Stake over 450 metres between Bravo ($10.10) and Houdini ($2.20 fav), clocking 25.77, with a nose to third placed Inspector Morse ($33.30).

Bravo, who came from box two, is a son of Bombastic Shiraz and Ducal Princess, trained by Terry Reid for Jenny Roberts.

Houdini, who wore the black vest, is a son of Mister Twink and Annie Rooney, owned by Sharon Waterston, and was the first leg of a winning double for trainer, Marcus Lloyd. Paper Chaser for the ACR Syndicate completed the double for Marcus by running the BON time of 25.40 to take out heat seven of the 450 metres Restricted Win Stake.

After lining up in box three at $5.80, the daughter of Superman and Nippy As scored by six and a half lengths over Why Not Happy ($1.30 fav), with Bully Bouncer ($22.20) pick-ing up third prize, a length and three quarters back.

Paper Chaser has started 32 times and this was her fifth win. Jet Blast ran the new PB of 31.30 to take out the 550 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

Sent to box two as favourite at $1.70, the son of Bombastic Shiraz and Poptart saluted by four lengths over American McGee ($4.10), with Optic Prince ($20.40) two and three quar-ter lengths further afield.

A winner of nine of his 43 runs, Jet Blast was the first leg of a winning double for owner trainer, Michael Carter. Jet Lane completed the double for Mi-chael by registering 22.08 to score in a 390 metres Grade 5.

After coming from box six as favourite at $1.60, the son of El Galo and Proven Lilly led throughout to beat Sonic Chick ($18.40) by six lengths, with Sisco Shadow ($16.60) the next one home, six and three quarter lengths further astern.

Favourite lad Horsham February 28 LORITA BALE took out the 480 metres Grade 5 Final on Tuesday night.

Sent to box three at $3.60, the Steve Collins trained chaser scored by two lengths over Gotta Be Jolly ($9.10), with Gula Bale ($3.40 fav) a length and a half back in third spot.

Lorita Bale, a daughter of Hallucinate and Licorice Bale, owned by Paul Wheeler, made it 16 wins in 53 starts with a new PB gallop of 27.03.

Big Bad Baz ran 23.53 to take out heat two of the GRV VBIS Maiden Series over 410 metres.

The former NSW chaser was reported to have trialled brilliantly prior to her 460 metres victory, hence the strong support for the well bred daughter of Knocka Norris and Surf Queen starting a popular $2.70 favourite. The lightly raced brindle bitch kept out of trouble early from the seven alley and went to the line strongly to record a 26.19 win. She followed up that good win by saluting two days later up the Healesville straight in 19.38. Once again Crystal Cash carried the bulk of punters money, starting a $3,10 favourite.

The sensational short course speedster Classy Maldini is now the 350 metres track record holder after clocking 18.82 at his Healesville debut.
