    India is the largest producer of toor pulse.

    85% of the total produce in the total producein the world.

    The crop is cultivated on marginal land by resource-poor farmers.

    farmers commonly grows traditional medium- andlong-duration (511 months) and Short-duration (34months).

    Toor dal is very drought resistant and can be grown inareas with less than 650 mm annual rainfall.

    Agri-inputs such as fertilizers, weeding, irrigation andpesticides requirement is minimal.

    High demand in Indian market because of dailyconsumption in every part of India.

    Dal mill is being established by the support of

    a local NGO.Location: Netrang,Gujarat

    4 Villages for taking the produce from farmersdirectly.

    This dal mill is a commercial wing of NGO withmission to link the farmers in the agriculturalvalue chain.

    is 2.5 3.0 quintals per bigha.

    Total production of toor in Dhamni block(Netrang) is around 650 metric tons.

    The farmers typically receive Rs.25-30 per kgdepending on the quality of produce.

    The processed dal is then sold into various

    markets, in entire Gujarat at the rate of Rs.32.50-35.50 per kg.

    The husk and broken dal are sold directly fromthe plants at a rate of Rs.8 per kg and Rs.10 perkg. No portion of the raw dal goes as waste.

    In regular 3, 6, or 12-month intervals, the mill'sprofit could be distributed back to theparticipating farmers.

    Constraint

    Mechanization: Repair and maintenance are the

    major constraints. Unit often requires major and

    minor repairs.

    Skilled mechanic: The quality of produce suffers

    when NGO have shortage of trained technicians to

    run various mechanical and production

    operations.
